Abstract
Quantum chemical methods have been employed to evaluate the possible configurations of the 1:1 and 1:2 HOSO-formic acid complexes and 1:1:1 HOSO-formic acid-water complexes. The first type of complex involves two H bonds, while the other two types comprise three H bonds in a ring. The complexes are relatively stable, with CBS-QB3 computed binding energies of 14.3 kcal mol(-1) , 23.4 kcal mol(-1) , and 21.1 kcal mol(-1) for the lowest-energy structures of the 1:1, 1:2, and 1:1:1 complexes, respectively. Complex formations induce a large spectral red-shift and an enhancement of the IR intensity for the H-bonded OH stretching modes relative to those in the parent monomers. TDDFT calculations of the low-lying electronic excited states demonstrate that the complexes are photochemically quite stable in the troposphere. Small spectral shifts in comparison to the free HOSO radical suggest that the radical and the complexes would not be easily distinguishable using standard UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Noncovalent interactions are crucial for many physical, chemical, and biological phenomena. Matrix isolation is a powerful method to study noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen-bonded species, and it has been extensively used in this field. However, there are difficult situations, such as in the case of species that are impossible to prepare in the gas phase. In this article, we describe some advanced approaches allowing studies of complexes that are problematic for the traditional methods. Photolysis of a suitable precursor in a matrix can lead to a large concentration of 1:1 complexes, which are otherwise very difficult to prepare (e.g., the H2O···O complex). Photolysis of species combined with annealing can lead to complexes of molecules with mobile atoms (e.g., the same H2O···O complex). Simultaneous photolysis of two species combined with annealing can produce complexes of radicals via reactions of the photogenerated complexes with mobile atoms (e.g., the H2O···HCO complex). Interaction of noble-gas (Ng) hydrides with other species is another topic (e.g., the N2···HArF complex) and very large blue shifts of the H-Ng stretching modes are normally observed for these systems. Complexes and dimers of the higher-energy conformer of formic acid have been prepared by using selective vibrational excitation of the ground-state conformer. The higher-energy conformer of formic acid can be efficiently stabilized in the complexes with strong hydrogen bonding. We also consider some problematic cases when the changes in the vibrational frequencies of the 1:1 complexes are very small (e.g., the phenol···Xe complex) and when the complex formation is prevented by strong solvation in the matrix (e.g., species in solid xenon).

Abstract
Infrared spectra are reported of ozone and HCl dissolved in liquid argon (86-134 K) at concentrations varying from 5×10(-5) to 9×10(-6) M for HCl, and from 1×10(-3) to 5×10(-5) M for ozone. At low concentrations of O3 and of HCl, no spectral features due to O3-HCl complex were found. At higher concentrations (1×10(-3) of ozone vs 5×10(-5)-9×10(-6) of HCl), a new band near 2840 cm(-1) due to the HCl···O3 complex was observed. FWHM of νHCl of the complex is 8 cm(-1). From the temperature dependence of the absorption band intensity, the enthalpy of the complex formation was estimated, ΔH°=4.7±0.4 kJ mole(-1). The optimized geometry of the cis-HCl···O3 complex and a value of 6.3 kJ mole(-1) for its binding energy were determined by ab initio calculations.

Abstract
The photochemistry of ozone-water complexes and the wavelength dependence of the reactions were studied by matrix isolation FTIR spectrometry in neon, argon, and krypton matrixes. Hydrogen peroxide was formed upon the irradiation of UV light below 355 nm. Quantitative analyses of the reactant and product were performed to evaluate the matrix cage effect of the photoreaction. In argon and krypton matrixes, a bimolecular O((1)D) + H2O → H2O2 reaction was found to occur to form hydrogen peroxide, where the O((1)D) atom generated by the photolysis of ozone diffused in the cryogenic solids to encounter water. In a neon matrix, hydrogen peroxide was generated through intracage photoreaction of the ozone-water complex, indicating that a neon matrix medium is most appropriate to study the photochemistry of the ozone-water complex.
