Abstract
The formal potentials for the reversible one-electron oxidation of N,N,N',N' tetrasubstituted p-phenylenediamines in acetonitrile have been applied as a test set for benchmarking computational methods for a series of compounds with only small structural differences. The aim of the study is to propose a simple method for calculating the standard oxidation potentials, and therefore, the protocol is progressively developed by adding more terms in the energy expression. In addition, the effect of including implicit solvation models (IEFPCM, CPCM, and SMD), larger basis sets, and correlation methods are investigated. The oxidation potentials calculated using the G3MP2B3 approach with IEFPCM resulted in the best fit (R2 = 0.9624), but the slope of the correlation line, 0.74, is far from the optimal value, 1.00. B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and TPSSh/6-311++G(2d,p) yielded only slightly less consistent data (R2 = 0.9388 and R2 = 0.9425), but with much better slopes, 1.00 and 0.94, respectively. We conclude that it is important to investigate the basis set size and treatment of electron correlation when calculating oxidation potentials for N,N,N',N' tetrasubstituted p-phenylenediamines.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive chromic materials such as photochromics, hydrochromics, thermochromics, and electrochromics have a long history of capturing the attention of scientists due to their potential industrial applications and novelty in popular culture. However, hybrid chromic materials that combine two or more stimuli-triggered color changing properties are not so well known. Herein, we report a design strategy that has led to a series of emissive 1,8-naphthalimide-viologen dyads which exhibit unusual dual photochromic and hydrochromic switching behavior in the solid-state when embedded in a cellulose matrix. This behavior manifests as reversible solid state fluorescence hydrochromism upon changes in atmospheric relative humidity (RH), and reversible solid state photochromism upon generation of a cellulose-stabilized viologen radical cation. In this design strategy, the bipyridinium unit serves as both a water-sensitive receptor for the hydrochromic fluorophore-receptor system, and a photochromic group, capable of eliciting its own visible colorimetric response, generating a fluorescence quenching radical cation with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. These dyes can be inkjet-printed onto cellulose paper or drop-cast as cellulose powder-based films and can be unidirectionally cycled between three different states which can be characteristically visualized under UV light or visible light. The material's photochromism, hydrochromism, and underlying mechanism of action was investigated using computational analysis, dynamic vapor sorption/desorption isotherms, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and variable humidity UV-Vis adsorption and fluorescence spectroscopies.

Abstract
Molecular charge-transfer interaction of a series of electron π-acceptors of 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ), 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) with selected donors of 1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (PTHIQ) and 4-aminoacetanilide (ACE) have been studied in methanol at room temperature. The stoichiometry of the complexes was determined by photometric titration method and was found to be 1:1, in all the cases. Spectro-kinetic interaction studies along with rate constants and observed formation constants (K) indicated that the strength of the complex formations is PTHIQ-BQ < PTHIQ-DDQ < PTHIQ-TCNQ. Also, Similar observations happened in ACE-BQ and < ACE-DDQ < ACE-TCNQ systems. FT-IR results indicated that the point of interaction was identifying in NH moiety of PTHIQ and NH2 moiety of ACE with series of π-acceptor complexes. The experimental results were compared with Ab initio DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31 + G(d) level of theory. The increasing order of the experimentally measured formation constant of CT-complexes (PTHIQ and ACE with series of acceptors) was well supported by theoretical HOMO-LUMO energy gap and drastically changes in Mulliken charges of NH moiety of PTHIQ, NH2 moiety of ACE with complexation with acceptors.

Abstract
The study of intact soluble protein assemblies by means of mass spectrometry is providing invaluable contributions to structural biology and biochemistry. A recent breakthrough has enabled similar study of membrane protein complexes, following their release from detergent micelles in the gas phase. Careful optimization of mass spectrometry conditions, particularly with respect to energy regimes, is essential for maintaining compact folded states as detergent is removed. However, many of the saccharide detergents widely employed in structural biology can cause unfolding of membrane proteins in the gas phase. Here, we investigate the potential of charge reduction by introducing three membrane protein complexes from saccharide detergents and show how reducing their overall charge enables generation of compact states, as evidenced by ion mobility mass spectrometry. We find that charge reduction stabilizes the oligomeric state and enhances the stability of lipid-bound complexes. This finding is significant since maintaining native-like membrane proteins enables ligand binding to be assessed from a range of detergents that retain solubility while protecting the overall fold.

Abstract
The thermally induced intermolecular electron transfer reaction in acetonitrile between the tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), a π-electron acceptor with a large electron affinity, and six oxoisoaporphines (2,3-dihydro-7H-dibenzo[de,h]quinolin-7-one, 5-methoxy-2,3-dihydro-7H-dibenzo[de,h]quinolin-7-one, 1-azabenzo[de]anthracen-7-one, 5-methoxy-1-azabenzo[de]anthracen-7-one, 7H-benzo[e]perimidin-7-one, and 2-methyl-7h-benzo[e]perimidin-7-one) is reported. Spectral and kinetic characteristics are presented for radical cations derived from these six oxoisoaporphines either generated by a thermal reaction or generated radiolytically in argon-saturated 1,2-dichloroethane, oxygen-saturated acetone, and acetonitrile. The radical cations of oxoisoaporphines are insensitive to oxygen and are mostly characterized by absorption maxima of their most intense bands located at λmax = 400-410 nm, except of the radical cations derived from 2,3-dihydrooxoisoaporphines. For the latter compounds, the absorption maxima of the most intense absorption bands are located at λmax = 290-295 nm. Their locations are independent of the presence of functional groups and the solvents used. They are formed in bimolecular processes with pseudo-first-order rate constants ranging from 2.1 × 105 to 1.5 × 106 s-1 (in solutions containing 10-4 M of the substrate), depending on the derivative and the solvent used. They are stable either when formed via the electron-transfer reaction with TCNE or when generated in isolation in pulse radiolysis of Ar-saturated 1,2-dichloroethane. In acetone and acetonitrile they decay predominantly by first-order kinetics with the first-order rate constants ranging from 2.3 × 104 to 5.1 × 104 s-1. Formation of dimeric radical cations for all of the oxoisoaporphines studied was observed in acetonitrile solutions, and for azaoxoisoaporphines also in acetone solutions. The experimental spectra show a reasonably good agreement with the ZINDO/S semiempirical quantum mechanical calculations of radical cation absorptions.

Abstract
For the first time, the charge transfer (CT) complexes of quinones in aqueous medium have been reported. A series of novel water soluble 1,4-benzoquinones possessing variable number of chloro and methoxy substituents has been employed as electron acceptors (MQ1-4) in the CT complexation with cimetidine (CTD) drug. The mechanism of the interaction has been investigated using various spectral techniques such as UV-Vis, (1)H NMR and FT-IR spectra. The rate of the CT interaction was observed to decrease with progressive replacement of chloro by methoxy substituent in the quinone and this variation is well supported by the formation constant and enthalpy of activation values. Ab initio DFT calculations predicted that the variation in the bond lengths of the carbonyl moieties and the charge densities on the carbonyl oxygen atoms depend largely on the nature of the substituent present in the quinone ring. Also, the HOMO(Donor)-LUMO(Acceptor) energy gaps correlate linearly with the formation constants of the CT complex. The equilibrium, kinetic, electrochemical and theoretical investigations of the CT interaction of these quinones indicated that progressive replacement of electron withdrawing chlorine atom (-I effect) by an electron releasing methoxy group (+M effect) makes these acceptors progressively weaker. The charge-transfer complex, formed between CTD and monomethoxy quinone derivative, has been employed as a new class of chromogenic sensor for the colorimetric sensing of fluoride and acetate ions.

Abstract
Simple and solution-processible tetrabutyl-ammonium salts (TBAX) can dope fullerene and its derivatives to achieve conductive thin films (σ as high as 0.56 S/m). The electron transfer between the anions of TBAXs and n-type semiconductors induces doping without encountering any harsh activation. These provide valid support for the surfactant interfacial doping of fullerene in polymer solar cells for enhanced device performance.

Abstract
The heteroaromatic polynitrile compound tetracyanopyridine (TCNPy) is introduced as a new electron acceptor for the formation of deeply colored charge-transfer complexes. In MeCN, TCNPy is characterized by a quasireversible one-electron-reduction process at -0.51 V (versus SCE). The tetracyanopyridine radical anion undergoes a secondary chemical reaction, which is assigned to a protonation step. TCNPy has been demonstrated to generate 1:1 complexes with various electron donors, including tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and dihydroxybenzene derivatives, such as p-hydroquinone and catechol. Visible- or NIR-light-induced excitation of the intense charge-transfer bands of these compounds leads to a direct optical electron-transfer process for the formation of the corresponding radical-ion pairs. The presence of available electron donors that contain protic groups in close proximity to the TCNPy acceptor site opens up a new strategy for the photocontrolled generation of pyridinium radicals in a stepwise proton-coupled electron-transfer (PCET) sequence.

The recent emergence of anion-π interactions has added a new dimension to supramolecular chemistry of anions. Yet, after a decade since its inception, actual mechanisms of anion-π interactions remain highly debated. To elicit a complete and accurate understanding of how different anions interact with π-electron-deficient 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimides (NDIs) under different conditions, we have extensively studied these interactions using powerful experimental techniques. Herein, we demonstrate that, depending on the electron-donating abilities (Lewis basicity) of anions and electron-accepting abilities (π-acidity) of NDIs, modes of anion-NDI interactions vary from extremely weak non-chromogenic anion-π interactions to chromogenic anion-induced charge-transfer (CT) and electron-transfer (ET) phenomena. In aprotic solvents, electron-donating abilities of anions generally follow their Lewis basicity order, whereas π-acidity of NDIs can be fine-tuned by installing different electron-rich and electron-deficient substituents. While strongly Lewis basic anions (OH(-) and F(-)) undergo thermal ET with most NDIs, generating NDI(•-) radical anions and NDI(2-) dianions in aprotic solvents, weaker Lewis bases (AcO(-), H(2)PO(4)(-), Cl(-), etc.) often require the photoexcitation of moderately π-acidic NDIs to generate the corresponding NDI(•-) radical anions via photoinduced ET (PET). Poorly Lewis basic I(-) does not participate in thermal ET or PET with most NDIs (except with strongly π-acidic core-substituted dicyano-NDI) but forms anion/NDI CT or anion-π complexes. We have looked for experimental evidence that could indicate alternative mechanisms, such as a Meisenheimer complex or CH···anion hydrogen-bond formation, but none was found to support these possibilities.

Abstract
Phenyleneethynylene-based conjugated copolymers using benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis[1,3]dioxole (BDO) in the repeating unit are reported. The electronic structure of the BDO unit imparts a localized HOMO topology while the LUMO is delocalized over the polymer backbone, so that the lowest optical absorption band of the polymer has considerable intramolecular charge transfer character. This contrasts with published donor-acceptor polymers with localized LUMO and delocalized HOMO. The very large Stokes shifts of the monomers, which are due to the small oscillator strength of the lowest optical transition, are largely retained in the polymers as a result of covalently constrained dihedral angles in the substituents (not the backbone), as predicted/explained by calculations.

Abstract
Addition of "inert" tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (Bu(4)NPF(6)) to a solution of TMDO/DDQ in dichloromethane (where TMDO=2,2,6,6-tetramethylbenzo[1,2-d;4,5-d]bis[1,3]-dioxole, donor, and DDQ=diclorodicyano-p-benzoquinone, acceptor) is accompanied by drastic changes in the electronic spectrum, which are related to the appearance of the DDQ(-.) and TMDO(+.) ion radicals and a decrease in the concentration of the neutral molecules and the charge-transfer complex [TMDO,DDQ]. These changes point to a considerable rise (of about three orders of magnitude) in the apparent electron-transfer equilibrium constant (K(ET)) for this donor/acceptor pair upon increasing the electrolyte concentration from 0 to 0.5 M. Accordingly, the ion-radical fractions and K(ET) values are higher in dichloromethane, at high electrolyte concentrations, than in acetonitrile (where the effect of Bu(4)NPF(6) is less pronounced). Similar trends of the apparent equilibrium constants are observed for the tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine/tetracyanoethylene pair. Electron-transfer equilibrium constants for both donor/acceptor dyads obtained from spectral measurements are related to those derived from the redox potentials of the reactants. The effects of media variations on the electron-transfer equilibria are discussed within the ion-pairing and ionic-activity frameworks.
