Oxygen effects on the EPR signals from wood charcoals: experimental results and the development of a model

A spin statistical factor in electron transfer to oxygen molecules

The oxygen molecule in its ground triplet state (³O₂) is a strong electron acceptor. Electron transfer to ³O₂ to form a superoxide anion is an important elementary step in many chemical and biological processes. If this transfer occurs from a spin 1/2 paramagnetic particle where the total spin of the reactants is equal to 3/2, the reaction is spin-forbidden. In liquids, the significant dipole-dipole electron spin interaction in ³O₂ is supposed to mix the non-reactive quartet and reactive doublet states at a time scale of ∼10 ps, thus avoiding the barrier. To elucidate the role of spin effects in the electron transfer to ³O₂, we studied this reaction over a range of more than three orders of magnitude of the relative diffusion coefficient (D) of the reactants. It was found that spin effects during electron transfer to ³O₂ become insignificant when D < 10^-9 m² s^-1. In the range of intermediate D values (10^-9 m² s^-1 < D < 10^-8 m² s^-1) - which corresponds to some reactions of oxygen with small radicals in aqueous solutions - the effective spin factor decreases with increasing D value. If D > 10^-8 m² s^-1, the electron transfer is spin-selective with the spin factor of 1/3 as determined by the spin statistics. At such D values, the reaction encounter time may exceed the expected quartet-doublet mixing time by almost an order of magnitude. The reduced rate of quartet-doublet transitions within the encounter complex in the reaction with ³O₂ has been explained by the spin-exchange interaction and chemical Zeno effect.

Paramagnetic Properties of Fullerene-Derived Nanomaterials and Their Polymer Composites: Drastic Pumping Out Effect

The evolution of paramagnetic properties of the fullerene soot (FS), fullerene black (FB), and their polymer composites Phenylon C-2/FS, FB has been studied using the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method. For the first time, a drastic growth of the EPR signals in the FB, FS, and composite samples was observed under pumping out at temperatures T = 20 ÷ 300 °C, which is attributed to the interaction between carbon defects and adsorbed gas molecules, mainly oxygen.It is shown that the ensemble of paramagnetic centers in the FB, FS, and the composite is heterogeneous. This ensemble consists of three spin subsystems 1, 2, and 3 related with different structural elements. The subsystems give three corresponding contributions, L 1, L 2 and L 3, into the overall contour of the EPR signal. The most intensive and broad signal L 3 is caused by 2D electrons from the surface of carbon flakes. Theoretical calculations of the L 3 signal line shape were carried out, and the decay rate of the integral intensity has been obtained for each component L 1, L 2, and L 3 after the contact of the sample with the ambient air. The signal decay process in the bulk composite samples is much slower due to their low gas permeability at room temperature (RT).

Effect of low temperature thermal treatment on soils contaminated with pentachlorophenol and environmentally persistent free radicals

The effect of low temperature thermal treatment on soils from a former Superfund wood-treating site contaminated with pentachlorophenol (PCP) and the environmentally persistent free radical (EPFR), pentachlorophenoxyl, was determined. The pentachlorophenoxyl EPFRs' and the PCP molecules' chemical behavior were simultaneously monitored at temperatures ranging from 25 to 300 °C via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and GC-MS analysis, respectively. Two types of thermal treatment were employed: a closed heating (oxygen-starved condition) where the soil was heated under vacuum and an open heating system (oxygen-rich conditions), where the soil was heated in ambient air. EPR analyses for closed heating indicated the EPFR concentration was 2-12 × 10(18) spins/g of soil, with a g-factor and line width (ΔHp-p) of 2.00311-2.00323 and 4.190-5.472 G, respectively. EPR analyses for the open heating soils revealed a slightly broader and weaker radical signal, with a concentration of 1-10 × 10(18) spins/g of soil, g-factor of 2.00327-2.00341, and ΔHp-p of 5.209-6.721 G. This suggested the open heating resulted in the formation of a more oxygen-centered structure of the pentachlorophenoxyl radical or additional, similar radicals. The EPFR concentration peaked at 10 × 10(18) spins/g of soil at 100 °C for open heating and 12 × 10(18) spins/g at 75 °C for closed heating. The half-lives of the EPFRs were 2-24 days at room temperature in ambient air. These results suggest low temperature treatment of soils contaminated with PCP can convert the PCP to potentially more toxic pentachlorophenoxyl EPFRs, which may persist in the environment long enough for human exposure.

Evaluation of oxygen-response times of phthalocyanine-based crystalline paramagnetic spin probes for EPR oximetry

The goal of the present study was to evaluate the temporal response of particulate-based EPR oximetry probes to changes in partial pressure of oxygen (pO(2)). In order to accurately evaluate the oxygen-response time, we developed a method for rapid modulation of pO(2) in a chamber containing the probe using an oscillator-driven speaker-diaphragm setup. The apparatus was capable of producing sinusoidal changes in pO(2) at frequencies up to 300 Hz or more. The pressure-modulation setup was used to evaluate the temporal response of some of the most commonly used phthalocyanine-based particulate probes. For validation, the time-response of the probes was compared to that of a high sensitivity pressure sensor. The results revealed that some particulate probes could respond to changes in pO(2) with a temporal response of 3.3 ms (300 Hz). The observations were interpreted in the light of their crystalline packing in favor of oxygen diffusion. The results of the present study should enable the selection of probes for oximetry applications requiring high temporal resolution.
