Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) play an important role in self-assembly systems of amphiphiles. The structure of CDs provides distinguished physicochemical properties, including the ability to form host-guest complexes. The complexation affects the properties of guest molecules and can produce supramolecular aggregates with desirable characteristics for fundamental and practical applications. Surfactants are particularly attractive host molecules due to their wide variety, availability, responsiveness to different stimuli, and high relevance in different fields, e.g. medical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries. The tendency of organization in higher-order supramolecular aggregates arises the interest in applying such versatile complexes in the development of novel materials. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the thermodynamics aspects of surfactants and CDs inclusion complexes formation in aqueous environment, emphasizing the assessment of the interactions, thermodynamic driving forces, and structural aspects. Also, the most common analytical techniques used to gather deep insight into the aspects of CDs complexes are discussed and the perspectives for the surfactant-cyclodextrin complexes are pointed out.

Abstract
Sustained-release olmesartan tablets (OLM) were prepared by the simple, direct compression of composites of anionic sulfobutyl ether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) and cationic spray-dried chitosan (SD-CS), and were evaluated for use as a sustained release preparation for the treatment of hypertension. An investigation of the interaction between OLM and SBE-β-CD by the solubility method indicated that the phase diagram of the OLM/SBE-β-CD system was the AL type, indicating the formation of a 1:1 inclusion complex. The release of OLM from tablets composed of the SD-CS/SBE-β-CD composite was slow in media at both pH 1.2 and at 6.8. The in vitro slow release characteristics of the SD-CS/SBE-β-CD composite were reflected in the in vivo absorption of the drug after normal rats were given an oral administration of the preparation. Furthermore, the SD-CS/SBE-β-CD composite continuously increased the antihypertensive effect of OLM in hypertensive rats, compared with that of the drug itself. These results suggest that a simple mixing of SD-CS and SBE-β-CD can be potentially useful for the controlled release of a drug for the continuous treatments of hypertension.

Abstract
The information in the literature concerned with lowering the critical aggregation concentration of anionic surfactants by macrocyclic compounds is scarce. This research develops an effective route for lowering the critical aggregation concentration of anionic gemini surfactants by the complexation of calixpyridinium. Furthermore, the size of complex self-assembled nanostructures can be well controlled by the different mixing ratio of the host and the guest.

Abstract
A vibrational study by means of UV-Raman and FTIR-ATR measurements has been performed on sulfobutyl ether β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD)-water solutions, as a function of concentration and temperature, with the aim to provide a molecular-scale explanation of the enhanced performances as carrier agent exhibited by this modified macrocycle with respect to natural cyclodextrin. The attention has been mainly paid to the modifications induced on the vibrational band assigned to the O-H stretching intramolecular mode, in turn related to the dynamical rearrangement occurring in the hydrogen bonding (HB) network of water molecules. The results of our measurements clearly showed a characteristic "structure-breaker" effect on the tetrahedral HB arrangements induced on water molecules by increasing of both temperature and solute concentration, allowing us to also extract thermodynamic parameters. These results could be a key step for a clearer understanding of the connection between the dynamical properties of hydration water and the complexing ability of this cyclodextrin derivative.

Abstract
Xue-Zhi-Ning (XZN) is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine formula to treat hyperlipidemia. Recently, cyclodextrins (CDs) have been extensively used to minimize problems relative to medicine bioavailability, such as low solubility and poor stability. The objective of this study was to determine the associated-extraction efficiency of various CDs in XZN. Three various type CDs were evaluated, including native CDs (α-CD, β-CD), hydrophilic CD derivatives (HP-β-CD and Me-β-CD), and ionic CD derivatives (SBE-β-CD and CM-β-CD). An ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) fingerprint was applied to determine the components in CD extracts and original aqueous extract (OAE). A counterpropagation artificial neural network (CP-ANN) was used to analyze the components in different extracts and compare the selective extraction of various CDs. Extraction efficiencies of the various CDs in terms of extracted components follow the ranking, ionic CD derivatives>hydrophilic CD derivatives>native CDs>OAE. Besides, different types of CDs have their own selective extraction and ionic CD derivatives present the strongest associated-extraction efficiency. Antioxidant potentials of various extracts were evaluated by determining the inhibition of spontaneous, H2O2-induced, CCl4-induced and Fe(2+)/ascorbic acid-induced lipid peroxidation (LPO) and analyzing the scavenging capacity for DPPH and hydroxyl radicals. The order of extraction efficiencies of the various CDs relative to antioxidant activities is as follows: SBE-β-CD>CM-β-CD>HP-β-CD>Me-β-CD>β-CD>α-CD. It can be demonstrated that all of the CDs studied increase the extraction efficiency and that ionic CD derivatives (SBE-β-CD and CM-β-CD) present the highest extraction capability in terms of amount extracted and antioxidant activities of extracts.

Abstract
CONTEXT Poor biopharmaceutical properties and toxicities associated with the intravenous formulation of docetaxel (DTX) necessitate the exploration of an alternate oral route of delivery. OBJECTIVE This study aims at enhancing the solubility of poorly soluble drug, DTX with the help of solid dispersion (SD) technique. METHOD DTX SDs were formulated with selected solubilizers, including Kollidon 12PF, Lutrol F68, Soluplus and Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in different weight ratios. Freeze-drying method was used to prepare the binary and ternary SDs. Kinetic solubility of the SDs was evaluated in order to select best DTX-solubilizer combination. Best performing combination was then characterized using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Among all SDs tested, Soluplus outperformed all the excipients at equivalent weight ratio. Binary SD of DTX and Soluplus (1:10) resulted in the highest improvement in solubility (362.93 ± 11.01 µg/mL). This is approximately a 93-fold increment as compared to the solubility of crystalline DTX (3.9 ± 0.2 µg/mL). This exceptional performance can be attributed to solid-state transformation as well as micellization. CONCLUSION Among all the excipients tested, Soluplus dispersion is the most promising candidate for oral formulation development.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins are able to act as host molecules in supramolecular chemistry with applications ranging from pharmaceutics to detergency. Among guest molecules surfactants play an important role with both fundamental and practical applications. The formation of cyclodextrin/surfactant host-guest compounds leads to an increase in the critical micelle concentration and in the solubility of surfactants. The possibility of changing the balance between several intermolecular forces, and thus allowing the study of, e.g., dehydration and steric hindrance effects upon association, makes surfactants ideal guest molecules for fundamental studies. Therefore, these systems allow for obtaining a deep insight into the host-guest association mechanism. In this paper, we review the influence on the thermodynamic properties of CD-surfactant association by highlighting the effect of different surfactant architectures (single tail, double-tailed, gemini and bolaform), with special emphasis on cationic surfactants. This is complemented with an assessment of the most common analytical techniques used to follow the association process. The applied methods for computation of the association stoichiometry and stability constants are also reviewed and discussed; this is an important point since there are significant discrepancies and scattered data for similar systems in the literature. In general, the surfactant-cyclodextrin association is treated without reference to the kinetics of the process. However, there are several examples where the kinetics of the process can be investigated, in particular those where volumes of the CD cavity and surfactant (either the tail or in special cases the head group) are similar in magnitude. This will also be critically reviewed.

Abstract
This paper reports the double confinement of 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (Dapsone) inside γ-cyclodextrin (CD) in presence of surfactants (cationic, anionic and nonionic) using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Interpretation of fluorescence spectra, fluorescence anisotropy and time resolved fluorescence decay of the γ-CD • Dapsone•micellar system hints at lesser microviscosity and the partial release of the probe molecule from the supramolecular host-guest complex in ionic micelles, of which greater in cationic micelles, but due to greater restriction and rigidity in presence of non-ionic micelle makes the probe more rigidly inside CD. Changes in computed rotational decay also corroborate the above findings.

Abstract
The interaction of sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) with risperidone (RISP) was first described with luminol-SBE-β-CD chemiluminescence (CL) system by flow injection analysis (FIA). In luminol-SBE-β-CD CL system, the 1:1 SBE-β-CD···luminol(*) complexation could enhance CL intensity of luminol and produce the effect of complexation enhancement of CL (CEC). It was found that RISP could quench the CL intensity of SBE-β-CD···luminol(*) and caused the effect of complexation enhancement of quenching (CEQ), the formation constant K(R-CD) 3.4×10(4) L mol(-1) and the stoichiometric ratio 1:1 of RISP···SBE-β-CD complex were obtained by the proposed CL model. Association degree α 0.036 of RISP···SBE-β-CD complex was also given by CL method. Based on the linear relationship to the decrement of luminol-SBE-β-CD-RISP CL intensity and the logarithm of RISP concentration, RISP also can be quantified in the linear range of 3.0-500.0 nmol L(-1) with a detection limit of 1.0 nmol L(-1) (3σ). The proposed method was successfully applied to monitoring excreted RISP in human urine. It was found that RISP reached its maximum after oral administration for 1.5 h with the total excretion of 14.26% within 8.5 h; the elimination rate constant k and half-life time t(1/2) were 0.474 and 1.5 h, respectively.

Abstract
In this study, we showed that the addition of randomly modified β-cyclodextrin (RAME-β-CD) in aqueous medium could have a beneficial impact on the catalytic performances of phosphane-based aggregates in the Pd-catalyzed cleavage of allyl carbonates (Tsuji–Trost reaction). The RAME-β-CD/phosphane supramolecular interactions helped explain the catalytic results. The presence of RAME-β-CD in the aqueous compartment improved the phosphane-based aggregate dynamics. The exchanges between the hydrophobic substrate-containing aggregate core and the catalyst-containing aqueous phase were then greatly favored, resulting in an increase in the catalytic performances.

Abstract
The catalytic effect of micelles, polymers (such as DNA, polypeptides) and nanoparticles, saturable receptors (cyclodextrins and calixarenes) and more complex systems (mixing some of the above mentioned catalysts) have been reviewed. In these microheterogeneous systems the observed changes in the rate constants have been rationalized using the Pseudophase Model. This model produces equations that can be derived from the Brönsted equation, which is the basis for a more general formulation of catalytic effects, including electrocatalysis. When, in the catalyzed reaction one of the reactants is in the excited state, the applicability (at least formally) of the Pseudophase Model occurs only in two limiting situations: the lifetime of the fluorophore and the distributions of the quencher and the probe are the main properties that define the different situations.

Abstract
In recent years our reseach group has investigated the chemical behaviour of β-cyclodextrin (CD)/surfactant mixed systems and their characteristics as reaction media. The results have been interpreted in terms of a pseudophase model that takes into account the formation of both CD-surfactant and CD-substrate complexes and also, in some cases, the exchange of X- and OH- ions between the micellar and aqueous pseudophases. from the experimental results it was concluded that the presence of CD has no effect on existing micelles but raises the critical micellar concentration (cmc). on the other hand, at surfactant concentrations above the cmc, competition between the micellisation and complexation processes leads to the existence of a significant concentration of free CD in equilibrium with the micellar aggregates. The percentage of uncomplexed β-CD in equilibrium with the micellar system increases on increasing the hydrophobicity of the surfactant molecule. This behaviour was justified taking into account the existence of two simultaneous processes: complexation of surfactant monomers by CD and the process of self-assembly to form micellar aggregates. The autoaggregation of surfactant monomers is more important than the complexation process in this mixed system. Varying the hydrophobicity of the surfactant monomer enabled us to determine that the percentages of uncomplexed CD in equilibrium with the micellar system were in the range of 5-95%. When the surfactant self-assembly structure is a vesicle, the free CD in the CD/surfactant mixed system yields a percentage of 100%.

Abstract
The effect of mixed cyclodextrin-surfactant systems on the ground and excited state proton transfer reactions of 4-methyl-2,6-diformylphenol (MFOH) in aqueous solution has been investigated by steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It has been found that micellar media perturbs the solvation of MFOH and facilitates nanocaging. In the presence of micelle, MFOH preferentially resides in the interfacial region. Depending on the local pH due to compartmentalization of reaction media, normal or anionic form of MFOH dominates. Encapsulation of the probe within the cyclodextrin nanocavity enhances the shorter lifetime component of MFOH unexpectedly, which has been explained on the basis of reduced solvation and reduced dipolar effect due to confinement.
