Abstract
Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of CuBr3- complex was studied in acetonitrile and dichloromethane solutions using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with 18 fs temporal resolution and quantum-chemical DFT calculations. Upon 640 nm excitation, the CuBr3- complex is promoted to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state, which then shortly undergoes internal conversion into the vibrationally hot ligand field (LF) excited state with time constants of 30 and 40 fs in acetonitrile and dichloromethane, respectively. The LF state nonradiatively relaxes into the ground state in 2.6 and 7.3 ps in acetonitrile and dichloromethane, respectively. Internal conversion of the LF state is accompanied by vibrational relaxation that occurs on the same time scale. Based on the analysis of coherent oscillations and quantum-chemical calculations, the predominant forms of the CuBr3- complex in acetonitrile and dichloromethane solutions were revealed. In acetonitrile, the CuBr3- complex exists as [CuBr3(CH3CN)2]-, whereas three forms of this complex, [CuBr3CH2Cl2]-, [CuBr3(CH2Cl2)2]-, and [CuBr3(CH2Cl2)3]-, are present in equilibrium in dichloromethane.

Abstract
Blue copper proteins continue to challenge experiment and theory with their electronic structure and spectroscopic properties that respond sensitively to the coordination environment of the copper ion. In this work, we report state-of-the art electronic structure studies for geometric and spectroscopic properties of the archetypal "Type I" copper protein azurin in its Cu(II) state. A hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach is used, employing both density functional theory (DFT) and coupled cluster with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) methods for the QM region, the latter method making use of the domain-based local pair natural orbital (DLPNO) approach. Models of increasing QM size are employed to investigate the convergence of critical geometric parameters. It is shown that convergence is slow and that a large QM region is critical for reproducing the short experimental Cu-SCys112 distance. The study of structural convergence is followed by investigation of spectroscopic parameters using both DFT and DLPNO-CC methods and comparing these to the experimental spectrum using simulations. The results allow us to examine for the first time the distribution of spin densities and hyperfine coupling constants at the coupled cluster level, leading us to revisit the experimental assignment of the 33S hyperfine splitting. The wavefunction-based approach to obtain spin-dependent properties of open-shell systems demonstrated here for the case of azurin is transferable and applicable to a large array of bioinorganic systems.

Abstract
Photochemistry of copper(II) monochlorocomplexes in methanol and acetonitrile solutions is studied by UV-pump/broadband deep-UV-to-near-IR probe femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Upon 255 and 266 nm excitation, the complexes in acetonitrile and methanol, respectively, are promoted to the excited ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state, which has a short (sub-250 fs) lifetime. From the LMCT state, the complexes decay via internal conversion to lower-lying ligand field (LF) d-d excited states or the vibrationally hot ground electronic state. A minor fraction of the excited complexes relaxes to the LF electronic excited states, which are relatively long-lived with lifetimes >1 ns. Also, in methanol solutions, about 3% of the LMCT-excited copper(II) monochlorocomplexes dissociate forming copper(I) solvatocomplexes and chlorine atoms, which then further react forming long-lived photoproducts. In acetonitrile, about 50% of the LMCT-excited copper(II) monochlorocomplexes dissociate forming radical and ionic products in a ratio of 3:2. Another minor process observed following excitation only in methanol solutions is the re-equilibration between several forms of the copper(II) ground-state complexes present in solutions. This re-equilibration occurs on a time scale from sub-nanoseconds to nanoseconds.

Abstract
In this perspective, we present an overview of the determination of excited-state properties of "real-life" dyes, and notably of their optical absorption and emission spectra, performed during the last decade with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We discuss the results obtained with both vertical and adiabatic (vibronic) approximations, choosing relevant examples for several series of dyes. These examples include reproducing absorption wavelengths of numerous families of coloured molecules, understanding the specific band shape of amino-anthraquinones, optimising the properties of dyes used in solar cells, mimicking the fluorescence wavelengths of fluorescent brighteners and BODIPY dyes, studying optically active biomolecules and photo-induced proton transfer, as well as improving the properties of photochromes.

Abstract
The calculation of the electronic circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the oxidized form of the blue copper proteins plastocyanin and cucumber basic protein and the relationship between the observed spectral features and the structure of the active site of the protein is investigated. Excitation energies and transition strengths are computed using multireference configuration interaction, and it is shown that computed spectra based on coordinates from the crystal structure or a single structure optimized in quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) or ligand field molecular mechanics (LFMM) are qualitatively incorrect. In particular, the rotational strength of the ligand to metal charge transfer band is predicted to be too small or have the incorrect sign. By considering calculations on active site models with modified structures, it is shown that the intensity of this band is sensitive to the nonplanarity of the histidine and cysteine ligands coordinated to copper. Calculation of the ultraviolet absorption and CD spectra based upon averaging over many structures drawn from a LFMM molecular dynamics simulation are in good agreement with experiment, and superior to analogous calculations based upon structures from a classical molecular dynamics simulation. This provides evidence that the LFMM force field provides an accurate description of the molecular dynamics of these proteins.
