Photophysical Properties of a Series of Electron-Donating and -Withdrawing Platinum Acetylide Two-Photon Chromophores

The Influence of the Alkylamino Group on the Solvatochromic Behavior of 5-(4-substituted-arylidene)-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-triones: Synthesis, Spectroscopic and Computational Studies

Advances in electronics and medical diagnostics have made organic dyes extremely popular as key functional materials. From a practical viewpoint, it is necessary to assess the spectroscopic and physicochemical properties of newly designed dyes. In this context, the condensation of 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid with electron-rich alkylaminobenzaldehyde derivatives has been described, resulting in a series of merocyanine-type dyes. These dyes exhibit intense blue-light absorption but weak fluorescence. An electron-donating alkylamino group at position C4 is responsible for the solvatochromic behavior of the dyes since the lone electron pair of the nitrogen atom is variably delocalized toward the barbituric ring, which exhibits electron-withdrawing properties. This was elucidated, taking into account the different geometry of the amino group. The intramolecular charge transfer in the molecules is responsible for the relatively high redshift in absorption and fluorescence spectra. Additionally, an increase in solvent polarity moves the absorption and fluorescence to lower energy regions. The observed solvatochromism is discussed in terms of the four-parameter Catalán solvent polarity scale. The differences in the behavior of the dyes were quantified with the aid of time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The obtained results made it possible to find regularities linking the basic spectroscopic properties of the compounds with their chemical structure. This is important in the targeted search for new, practically important dyes.

Nanoscale Organization of a Platinum(II) Acetylide Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Molecular Glass for Photonics Applications

The fabrication, molecular structure, and spectroscopy of a stable cholesteric liquid crystal platinum acetylide glass obtained from trans-Pt(PEt3)2(C≡C-C6H5-C≡N)(C≡C-C6H5-COO-Cholesterol), are described and designated as PE1-CN-Chol. Polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments show room temperature glassy/crystalline texture with crystal formation upon heating to 165 °C. Further heating results in conversion to cholesteric phase. Cooling to room temperature leads to the formation of a cholesteric liquid crystal glass. Scanning tunneling microscopy of a PE1-CN-Chol monolayer reveals self-assembly at the solid-liquid interface with an array of two molecules arranged in pairs, oriented head-to-head through the CN groups, giving rise to a lamella arrangement. The lamella structure obtained from molecular dynamics calculations shows a clear phase separation between the conjugated platinum acetylide and the hydrophobic cholesterol moiety with the lamellae separation distance being 4.0 nm. Ultrafast transient absorption and flash photolysis spectra of the glass show intersystem crossing to the triplet state occurring within 100 ps following excitation. The triplet decay time of the film compared to aerated and deoxygenated solutions is consistent with oxygen quenching at the film surface but not within the film. The high chromophore concentration, high glass thermal stability, and long triplet lifetime in air show that these materials have potential as nonlinear absorbing materials.

Substituent Effect in the First Excited Triplet State of Monosubstituted Benzenes

The structure of 30 monosubstituted benzenes in the first excited triplet T₁ state was optimized with both unrestricted (U) and restricted open shell (RO) approximations combined with the ωB97XD/aug-cc-pVTZ basis method. The substituents exhibited diverse σ- and π-electron-donating and/or -withdrawing groups. Two different positions of the substituents are observed in the studied compounds in the T₁ state: one distorted from the plane and the other coplanar with a quinoidal ring. The majority of the substituents are π-electron donating in the first group while π-electron withdrawing in the second one. Basically, U- and RO-ωB97XD approximations yield concordant results except for the B-substituents and a few of the planar groups. In the T₁ state, the studied molecules are not aromatic, yet aromaticity estimated using the HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) index increases from ca. -0.2 to ca. 0.4 with substituent distortion, while in the S₁ state, they are only slightly less aromatic than in the ground state (HOMA ≈0.8 vs ≈1.0, respectively). Unexpectedly, the sEDA(T₁) and pEDA(T₁) substituent effect descriptors do not correlate with analogous parameters for the ground and first excited singlet states. This is because in the T₁ state, the geometry of the ring changes dramatically and the sEDA(T₁) and pEDA(T₁) descriptors do not characterize only the functional group but the entire molecule. Thus, they cannot provide useful scales for the substituents in the T₁ states. We found that the spin density in the T₁ states is accumulated at the C_ipso and C_p atoms, and with the substituent deformation angle, it nonlinearly increases at the former while decreases at the latter. It appeared that the gap between singly unoccupied molecular orbital and singly occupied molecular orbital (SUMO-SOMO) is determined by the change of the SOMO energy because the former is essentially constant. For the nonplanar structures, SOMO correlates with the torsion angle of the substituent and the ground-state pEDA(S₀) descriptor of the π-electron-donating substituents ranging from 0.02 to 0.2 e. Finally, shapes of the SOMO-1 instead of SOMO frontier orbitals in the T₁ state somehow resemble the highest occupied molecular orbital ones of the S₀ and S₁ states. For several planar systems, the shape of the U- and RO-density functional theory-calculated SOMO-1 orbitals differs substantially.

Triplet state structure-property relationships in a series of platinum acetylides: effect of chromophore length and end cap electronic properties

To develop quantitative structure-spectroscopic property relationships in platinum acetylides, we investigated the triplet state behavior of nominally centrosymmetric chromophores trans-Pt(PBu3)2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Phenyl-X)2, where X = diphenylamino, NH2, OCH3, t-Bu, CH3, H, F, benzothiazole, CF3, CN, and NO2. We measured ground state absorption, phosphorescence, excitation and triplet state absorption spectra and triplet lifetimes. By DFT we calculated the phosphorescence emission energy (ET), the spin density on the end cap (SD(X)), triplet state geometry and the distance between the triplet centroid and the central platinum atom (RS-Pt(X)). Compounds with electron-donating X have smaller triplet state lifetime, blue-shifted phosphorescence and larger triplet potential energy surface displacement associated with the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond. Compounds with electron-withdrawing X have larger triplet lifetime, red-shifted phosphorescence and smaller triplet potential energy surface displacement associated with the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond. The range of spin-orbit-coupling between the platinum atom and the triplet centroid was determined to be 6 Å. The quantity RS-Pt is shown to be a linear function of one-dimensional well length calculated from experimental ET. The multiple examples demonstrate RS-Pt is a useful descriptor for analyzing triplet state behavior.

Stereochemical Effects on Platinum Acetylide Two-Photon Chromophores

A series of cis-platinum(II) acetylide complexes containing two-photon-absorbing chromophores have been synthesized and characterized to explore the effects of stereochemistry on the nonlinear absorption properties. The molecules feature 4-(phenylethynyl)phenylethynylene (PE2), diphenylaminofluorene (DPAF), and benzothiazolylfluorene (BTF) ligands. The photophysical properties were investigated under one- and two-photon conditions and compared to the known trans analogues via UV-visible absorption, photoluminescence, femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption (TA), nanosecond z-scan, and femtosecond two-photon absorption (2PA). The bent cis complexes exhibit blue shifts in the absorption, emission, femtosecond, and nanosecond TA spectra along with lower molar extinction coefficients and lower phosphorescence yields relative to the trans complexes suggesting less efficient Pt-induced spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing in the cis configuration. The cis chromophores are noncentrosymmetric and therefore show dipolar behavior with a pronounced 2PA in the 0-0 transition of the S₀ → S₁ band, while the trans complexes show quadrupolar behavior with a forbidden 0-0 transition. In the S₀ → S_n region, both cis and trans complexes show intense two-photon-absorption bands (up to 3700 GM by the peak cross section for cis-BTF) which contain a significant contribution from the excited state absorption (S₁ → S_n). All six complexes exhibit comparable nonlinear absorption response with a significant contribution from triplet-triplet absorption that slightly favors trans complexes but is more strongly dependent upon the structure of the π-conjugated chromophore.

Influence of Tail Groups during Functionalization of ZnO Nanoparticles on Binding Enthalpies and Photoluminescence

We report on the tailoring of ZnO nanoparticle (NP) surfaces by catechol derivatives (CAT) with different functionalities: tert-butyl group (tertCAT), hydrogen (pyroCAT), aromatic ring (naphCAT), ester group (esterCAT), and nitro group (nitroCAT). The influence of electron-donating/-withdrawing properties on enthalpy of ligand binding (ΔH) was resolved and subsequently linked with optical properties. First, as confirmed by ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy results, all CAT molecules chemisorbed to ZnO NPs, independent of the distinct functionality. Interestingly, the ζ-potentials of ZnO after functionalization shifted to more negative values. Then, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and a mass-based method were applied to resolve the heat release during ligand binding and the adsorption isotherm, respectively. However, both heat- and mass-based approaches alone did not fully resolve the binding enthalpy of each molecule adsorbing to the ZnO surface. This is mainly due to the fact that the Langmuir model oversimplifies the underlying adsorption mechanism, at least for some of the tested CAT molecules. Therefore, a new, fitting-free approach was developed to directly access the adsorption enthalpy per molecule during functionalization by dividing the heat release measured via ITC by the amount of bound molecules determined from the adsorption isotherm. Finally, the efficiency of quenching the visible emission caused by ligand binding was investigated by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, which turned out to follow the same trend as the binding enthalpy. Thus, the functionality of ligand molecules governs the binding enthalpy to the particle surface, which in turn, at least in the current case of ZnO, is an important parameter for the quenching of visible emission. We believe that establishing such correlations is an important step toward a more general way of selecting and designing ligand molecules for surface functionalization. This allows developing strategies for tailored colloidal surfaces beyond empirically driven formulation on a case by case basis.

Two-Photon Spectroscopy of a Series of Platinum Acetylides: Conformation-Induced Ground-State Symmetry Breaking

With the goal of elucidating electronic and conformational effects on structure-spectroscopic property relationships in platinum acetylides, we synthesized a series of nominally centrosymmetric chromophores trans-Pt(PBu₃)₂(C≡C-Phenyl-X)₂, where X = diphenylamino (DPA), NH₂, OCH₃, t-Bu, CH₃, H, F, benzothiazole (BTH), CF₃, CN, and NO₂. We collected one- and two-photon absorption spectra and also performed density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations on the ground- and excited-state properties of these compounds. The DFT calculations revealed facile rotation between the two ligands, suggesting that the compounds exhibit nonplanar ground-state conformations in solution. TDDFT calculation of the S₁ state energy and transition dipole moment for a nonplanar conformation gave good agreement with experiment. Two-photon absorption spectra obtained from these compounds allowed estimation of the change of permanent electric dipole moment upon vertical excitation from ground state to S₁ state. The values are small Δμ < 1.0 D for neutral substituents such as CH₃, H, and F but increase sharply to Δμ ≈ 11 D for electron-accepting NO₂. When in a nonplanar conformation, the corresponding calculated Δμ values showed good agreement with the experimental data indicating that the two-photon spectra result from nonplanar ground-state conformations. Previously studied related chromophores having extended conjugation ( Rebane, A.; Drobizhev, M.; Makarov, N. S.; Wicks, G.; Wnuk, P.; Stepanenko, Y.; Haley, J. E.; Krein, D. M.; Fore, J. L.; Burke, A. R.; Slagle, J. E.; McLean, D. G.; Cooper, T. M. J. Phys. Chem. A 2014 , 118 , 3749 - 3759 ) show similar dependence of Δμ on the substituents, which allows us to conclude that the excited-state properties of these floppy chromophores are a function of the electronic properties of the substituents, ligand size, and nonplanar molecular conformation.

Phosphorescent platinum(ii) alkynyls end-capped with benzothiazole units

Phosphorescent platinum(ii) alkynyls. Phosphorescent trans-bis(alkynyl) bis(phosphine) or bis(cyanide) Pt^II derivatives (1–4) based on the 2-phenylbenzothiazole unit have been prepared. The negative solvatochromic behavior of 4 has been analyzed by the Kamlet–Taft solvent scale and the Gutmann's acceptor numbers. The optical properties were addressed by TD and DFT calculations on 2 and 4.

Our Expedition in Linear Neutral Platinum-Acetylide Complexes: The Preparation of Micro/nanostructure Materials, Complicated Topologies, and Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

During the past few decades, the construction of various kinds of platinum-acetylide complexes has attracted considerable attention, because of their wide applications in photovoltaic cells, non-linear optics, and bio-imaging materials. Among these platinum-acetylide complexes, the linear neutral platinum-acetylide complexes, due to their attractive properties, such as well-defined linear geometry, synthetic accessibility, and intriguing photoproperties, have emerged as a rising star in this field. In this personal account, we will discuss how we entered the field of linear neutral platinum-acetylide chemistry and what we found in this field. The preparation of various types of linear neutral platinum-acetylide complexes and their applications in the areas of micro/nanostructure materials, complicated topologies, and dye-sensitized solar cells will be summarized in this account.

Tuning of the excitation wavelength in Eu3+-aminophenyl based polyfluorinated β-diketonate complexes: a red-emitting Eu3+-complex encapsulated in a silica/polymer hybrid material excited by blue light

A series of new antenna complexes of Eu³⁺ based on aminophenyl β-diketonate ligands was designed and their photophysical properties were evaluated.

Platinum carbon bond formation via Cu(i) catalyzed Stille-type transmetallation: reaction scope and spectroscopic study of platinum-arylene complexes

The preparation of Pt(ii) complexes of the type trans-L₂Pt(Ar)Cl, L₂Pt(Ar)₂, and L₂Pt(Ar)(Ar′) (L = PBu₃, Ar = arylene) by CuI catalyzed reaction of cis-(PBu₃)₂PtCl₂ with aryl-stannanes is reported.
