Abstract
We have studied the structural and interfacial properties of CTAB/isooctane/alcohol/aqueous urea reverse micelles (RMs) for the first time using time-resolved fluorescence and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. The chain length of alcohol, used as cosurfactant, has been varied to design three microemulsion systems: CTAB/1-butanol, CTAB/1-hexanol, and CTAB/1-octanol/isooctane/water, at a fixed water loading ratio, w0 = 12. Time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy studies indicate that urea induces micellar aggregation in CTAB/1-butanol and CTAB/1-hexanol RMs but breaks down RM aggregates in CTAB/1-octanol RMs. Urea addition slows down solvation dynamics inside RMs at higher urea concentrations, evident from the longer lifetimes of solvent correlation decay. The underlying changes in microemulsion structure and intermicellar interactions are studied using small-angle X-ray scattering studies. The significant intermicellar interactions were modeled using the sticky hard sphere (SHS) for the CTAB/1-butanol and CTAB/1-hexanol RMs and by using the Macroion model for the CTAB/1-octanol RMs. The two different structural factors highlight the dominance of attractive and repulsive forces, respectively. Although there is no change in RM shape, the combination of urea addition and chain length variation in cosurfactants significantly alters the size and interface in these pseudoternary RMs.

Abstract
Nonlinear optics is essential for many recent photonic technologies. Here, a novel multi-scale approach is introduced to simulate the nonlinear optical response of molecular nanomaterials combining ab initio quantum-chemical and classical Maxwell-scattering computations. In this approach, the first hyperpolarizability tensor is computed with time-dependent density-functional theory and incorporated into a multi-scattering formalism that considers the optical interaction between neighboring molecules. Such incorporation is achieved by a novel object: the Hyper-Transition(T)-matrix. With this object at hand, the nonlinear optical response from single molecules and also from entire photonic devices can be computed, including the full tensorial and dispersive nature of the optical response of the molecules, as well as the optical interaction between different molecules as, for example, in the lattice of a molecular crystal. To demonstrate the applicability of the novel approach, the generation of a second-harmonic signal from a thin film of an Urea molecular crystal is computed and compared to more traditional simulations. Furthermore, an optical cavity is designed, which enhances the second-harmonic response of the molecular film up to more than two orders of magnitude. This approach is highly versatile and accurate and can be the working horse for the future exploration of nonlinear photonic molecular materials in structured photonic environments.

Abstract
Using the CRYSTAL17 package at the coupled-perturbed Kohn-Sham (CPKS) level, periodic boundary conditions first-principles calculations are enacted to predict the second harmonic generation second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) susceptibility, χ(2), values of six historical NLO crystals. This selection allowed the comparison between state-of-the-art calculations and experiment. Several computational aspects are tackled to define conditions where the results are converged with respect to the range of lattice summations, to the number of k-points in the first Brillouin zone, to the order of the multipole expansions for evaluating the long-range part of the electrostatic interactions, as well as to the atomic basis set size. A valence triple zeta basis set supplemented with polarization functions has been selected. Then, χ(2) calculations have been performed using a range of exchange-correlation functionals (XCFs). Results show the large impact of the amount of Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange on the amplitude but also on the sign on the χ(2) tensor components. To a given extent, these amplitude effects are consistent with results on molecules, but the sign reversal effects and the non-monotonic behavior of the χ(2) tensor components as a function of the amount of HF exchange are scarcely found for molecules. Then, using the recommended range-separated hybrid XCFs, the CPKS scheme leads to good agreement with experimental data for potassium dihydrogenophosphate, urea, and χZXX (2) of LiNbO3. The agreement is more questionable for χZZZ (2) of LiNbO3 whereas it remains poor for ammonium dihydrogenophosphate and 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline, with large underestimations by about a factor of 3, opening a path to further fine-tuning of the ranges of inclusion of HF exchange.

Abstract
Influence of the cation-anion interaction (expressed as internal hydrogen bonds) on the nonlinear optical properties (dipole moment, polarizability, anisotropy of polarizability and first-order hyperpolarizability) for the ionic liquids pyridinium hydrogen sulfate (PHS) and pyridinium bis(dihydrogen phosphate) (P2HP) was investigated in this paper. It was achieved analyzing vibrational modes (FT-IR) and electronic transitions (UV-vis) in PHS and P2HP. Molecular geometry of the title compounds was optimized by means of density functional theory calculations at B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level. Structural analysis exposed stronger internal hydrogen bonds (H7···O3 and H18···O4) between cationic and anionic fragments in the pyridinium hydrogen sulfate than these (H26···O4 and H25···O12) in pyridinium bis(dihydrogen phosphate). These observations are confirmed by FT-IR and UV-vis methods, where: (i) the infrared bands due to H···O and N-C interactions in P2HP appear at lower frequencies than the same ones in the spectrum of PHS and (ii) the n → π* electron transitions in PHS are more pronounced in comparison with these in P2HP. Based on the weaker cation-anion interaction in P2HP with respect to PHS, the former one is characterized with a remarkably higher first-order hyperpolarizability value. Hence, the ionic liquid P2HP was referred as a better nonlinear optical material than PHS.

Abstract
Abstract
In this study, the structure of 4-[4-(diethylamino)-benzylideneamino]-5-benzyl-2H-1,2,4-triazol-3(4H)-one (DBT) was examined through spectroscopic and theoretical analyses. In this respect, the geometrical, vibrational frequency, 1H and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts, thermodynamic, hyperpolarizability, and electronic properties including the highest occupied molecular orbital–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO–LUMO) energies of DBT as a potential non-linear optical (NLO) material were investigated using density functional theory at the B3LYP level with the 6-311G basis set. 1H and 13C-NMR chemical shifts of DBT with the gauge-invariant atomic orbital and continuous set of gauge transformation methods (in the solvents) were estimated, and the computed chemical shift values displayed excellent alignment with observed ones. Time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations with the integral equation formalism polarizable continuum model within various solvents and gas phases in the ground state were used to evaluate UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission wavelengths. Thermodynamic parameters including enthalpy, heat capacity, and entropy for DBT were also calculated at various temperatures. Moreover, calculations of the NLO were carried out to obtain the title compound’s electric dipole moment and polarizability properties. To illustrate the effect of the theoretical method on the spectroscopic and structural properties of DBT, experimental data of structural and spectroscopic parameters were used. The correlational analysis results were observed to indicate a strong relationship between the experimental and theoretical results.

Abstract
This study spotlights the fundamental insights about the systematic and comparative analysis of four famous hybrid classes of density functional theory (DFT) methods and their efficacy to calculate the linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) polarizabilities. For this study, urea and para-nitroaniline ([Formula: see text]-NA) molecular geometries are used as prototypes to calculate their linear and NLO properties. For comparative purposes, these molecules are often used as reference organic molecules for determination of NLO response properties and there is a dire need for such a benchmark database to be utilized by the researchers. We report systematically a range of functionals including hybrid (B3LYP, PBE1PBE, BH and HLYP), meta-hybrid (M06, M06-2X, M06-HF, M06-L), long-range corrected (CAM-B3LYP, LC-BLYP, LC-B97D, LC-B97D3) and functional with dispersion correction ([Formula: see text]B97, [Formula: see text]B97X, [Formula: see text]B97XD, HSEH1PBE). These groups are evaluated and their efficiency to calculate linear and NLO properties is graphically compared with each other. Overall, there are less deviations among different functionals for calculating dipole moments of [Formula: see text]-NA and urea while these deviations enhance as one moves from dipole moment to linear polarizability and nonlinear hyperpolarizabilities. In general, if we look at the trends, the polarizability values of B3LYP, M06-L, CAM-B3LYP and HSEH1PBE are relatively large and can be compared with each other. The dispersion corrected and long-range corrected functionals show more systematic deviations. For instance, among dispersion corrected functionals, the amplitudes of dipole moments, linear polarizability and NLO polarizabilities show an increasing trend as [Formula: see text]. It is also important to note that LC-B97D and LC-B97D3 of long-range corrected functional have observed exactly the same values of all the calculated parameters. A good agreement is being observed in static first and second hyperpolarizabilities of urea (B3LYP, M06-L, M06 and HSEH1PBE) and [Formula: see text]-NA (B3LYP, M06, M06-L, CAM-B3LYP and HSEH1PBE). Thus, we believe that the current investigation will provide the benchmark data of reference NLO molecules at different methods for theoretical community and molecular level insights for experimental community to design better NLO materials for hi-tech NLO applications.

Abstract
AbstractIncreasing research interests have been paid to developing efficient multifunctional material systems (MFMS) by using various composite materials, owing to their useful properties and good stability. Here, we systematically studied 1-naphthols, especially how the type and position of a substituent influence the reactivity and properties, using different electron-directing groups. During computations, important preparation guidelines for thiol derivatives of 1-naphthol were obtained. It is very interesting to note that some molecules could exhibit intramolecular O–H–O interactions. Careful theoretical investigation reveals that all the tested compounds are stable and the molecules with substituents in positions 4 and 8 are the least reactive. It is also worth noting that for the stability and polarizability tensor values, it is more favorable when both substituents are in the same benzene ring. Among tested 1-naphthols, the greatest values of alpha, beta, and gamma are more than 5, 60, and 110 times better respectively, than in the urea molecule; the change of electron-withdrawing group (EWG) to electron-donating group (EDG) increases NLO effects. This study provided a new scope of 1-naphthols applicability by using them as anti-corrosion materials and as very good materials for NLO devices due to the high stability of the aromatic structure coupled with polarity given by the substituents. Also, the understanding of IR vibrations for more complex organic compounds with thiol substituent has been improved.

Abstract
The crystalline materials with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are critically important for several technological applications, including nanophotonic and second harmonic generation devices. Urea is often considered to be a standard NLO material, due to the combination of non-centrosymmetric crystal packing and capacity for intramolecular charge transfer. Various approaches to crystal engineering of non-centrosymmetric molecular materials were reported in the literature. Here we propose using global lattice energy minimization to predict the crystal packing from the first principles. We developed a methodology that includes the following: (1) parameter derivation for polarizable force field AMOEBA; (2) local minimizations of crystal structures with these parameters, combined with the evolutionary algorithm for a global minimum search, implemented in program USPEX; (3) filtering out duplicate polymorphs produced; (4) reoptimization and final ranking based on density functional theory (DFT) with many-body dispersion (MBD) correction; and (5) prediction of the second-order susceptibility tensor by finite field approach. This methodology was applied to predict virtual urea polymorphs. After filtering based on packing similarity, only two distinct packing modes were predicted: one experimental and one hypothetical. DFT + MBD ranking established non-centrosymmetric crystal packing as the global minimum, in agreement with the experiment. Finite field approach was used to predict nonlinear susceptibility, and H-bonding was found to account for a 2.5-fold increase in molecular hyperpolarizability to the bulk value.
