Gas-Phase Experiments on Au(III) Photochemistry

Hydration of a Binding Site with Restricted Solvent Access: Solvatochromic Shift of the Electronic Spectrum of a Ruthenium Polypyridine Complex, One Molecule at a Time

We report the electronic spectra of mass selected [(bpy)(tpy)Ru-OH₂]²⁺·(H₂O)_n clusters (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, tpy =2,2':6'2″-terpyridine, n = 0-4) in the spectral region of their metal-to-ligand charge transfer bands. The spectra of the mono- and dihydrate clusters exhibit partially resolved individual electronic transitions. The water network forming at the aqua ligand leads to a rapid solvatochromic shift of the peak of the band envelope: addition of only four solvent water molecules can recover 78% of the solvatochromic shift in bulk solution. The sequential shift of the band shows a clear change in behavior with the closing of the first hydration shell. We compare our experimental data to density function theory (DFT) calculations for the ground and excited states.

Controlling Au Photodeposition on Large ZnO Nanoparticles

This study investigated how to control the rate of photoreduction of metastable AuCl2(-) at the solid-solution interface of large ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) (50-100 nm size). Band-gap photoexcitation of electronic charge in ZnO by 370 nm UV light yielded Au NP deposition and the formation of ZnO-Au NP hybrids. Au NP growth was observed to be nonepitaxial, and the patterns of Au photodeposition onto ZnO NPs observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were consistent with reduction of AuCl2(-) at ZnO facet edges and corner sites. Au NP photodeposition was effective in the presence of labile oleylamine ligands attached to the ZnO surface; however, when a strong-binding dodecanethiol ligand coated the surface, photodeposition was quenched. Rates of interfacial electron transfer at the ZnO-solution interface were adjusted by changing the solvent, and these rates were observed to strongly depend on the solvent's permittivity (ε) and viscosity. From measurements of electron transfer from ZnO to the organic dye toluidine blue at the ZnO-solution interface, it was confirmed that low ε solvent mixtures (ε ≈ 9.5) possessed markedly higher rates of photocatalytic interfacial electron transfer (∼3.2 × 10(4) electrons·particle(-1)·s(-1)) compared to solvent mixtures with high ε (ε = 29.9, ∼1.9 × 10(4) electrons·particle(-1)·s(-1)). Dissolved oxygen content in the solvent and the exposure time of ZnO to band-gap, near-UV photoexcitation were also identified as factors that strongly affected Au photodeposition behavior. Production of Au clusters was favored under conditions that caused electron accumulation in the ZnO-Au NP hybrid. Under conditions where electron discharge was rapid (such as in low ε solvents), AuCl2(-) precursor ions photoreduced at ZnO surfaces in less than 5 s, leading to deposition of several small, isolated ∼6 nm Au NP on the ZnO host instead.

Spectroscopy and fragmentation of undercoordinated bromoiridates

We report gas-phase electronic photodissociation spectra of the undercoordinated bromoiridate complexes IrBr(4)(-) and IrBr(5)(-) at photon energies from 1 to 5.6 eV. Both ions have open-shell ground states with low-symmetry structures. The fragmentation is characterized by thresholds for the loss of one Br atom for IrBr(4)(-) and one or two Br atoms for IrBr(5)(-). The experimental spectra consist of ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions and reveal a large density of electronic states that can be recovered by time-dependent density functional theory.

Photoreduction kinetics of sodium tetrachloroaurate under synchrotron soft X-ray exposure

We report on the time evolution of the sodium tetrachloroaurate (NaAuCl(4)) chemical properties as a function of soft X-ray exposure in a dried sample on a silicon surface using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Our investigations provide mechanistic insight into the photoreduction kinetics from Au(III) to Au(I) and then Au(I) to Au(0). We unambiguously show that XPS photoreduction occurs in stepwise fashion via the Au(I) state. Both photoreduction steps undergo first-order kinetics.
