Hydrogen Bonding Effects on the Wavenumbers and Absorption Intensities of the OH Fundamental and the First, Second, and Third Overtones of Phenol and 2,6-Dihalogenated Phenols Studied by Visible/Near-Infrared/Infrared Spectroscopy

Near-infrared spectroscopy of H3O+⋯Xn (X = Ar, N2, and CO, n = 1-3)

Near-infrared (NIR) spectra of H3O+⋯Xn (X = Ar, N2, and CO, n = 1-3) in the first overtone region of OH-stretching vibrations (4800-7000 cm-1) were measured. Not only OH-stretching overtones but also several combination bands are major features in this region, and assignments of these observed bands are not obvious at a glance. High-precision anharmonic vibrational simulations based on the discrete variable representation approach were performed. The simulated spectra show good agreement with the observed ones and provide firm assignments of the observed bands, except in the case of X = CO, in which higher order vibrational mode couplings seem significant. This agreement demonstrates that the present system can be a benchmark for high precision anharmonic vibrational computations of NIR spectra. Band broadening in the observed spectra becomes remarkable with an increase of the interaction with the solvent molecule (X). The origin of the band broadening is explored by rare gas tagging experiments and anharmonic vibrational simulations of hot bands.

Selective extraction of anionic and cationic dyes using tailored hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents

In this work, eight kinds of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), including four types of ionic and four types of non-ionic DESs, were prepared and applied in vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) technology. To explore the extraction ability of the hydrophobic DESs-based vortex-assisted LLME, four types of dyes were selected as analytes, involving anionic tartrazine (TA), amaranth (AM) and cationic phenosafranine (PF), methylene blue (MB). It turned out that the ionic and non-ionic hydrophobic DESs showed selective extraction on anionic and cationic dyes, respectively. In particular, the extraction efficiency of TA could reach 99.3 % when trioctylmethylammonium chloride-thymol ([TMAC][Thy]) was utilized as extraction agent. The partitioning efficiency of PF was up to 99.9 % by using decanoic acid-thymol ([DecA][Thy]) as extraction agent. The limits of detection (LODs) of TA and PF were 0.06 and 0.14 μg mL-1, respectively. The limits of quantification (LOQs) obtained for TA and PF were 0.20 and 0.47 μg mL-1, respectively. Besides, FT-IR and 1H NMR were utilized to investigate the extraction mechanism. The results demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic force were the main driving forces in the extraction process. Furthermore, through separating various anionic and cationic dyes, the selective extraction ability of [TMAC][Thy] and [DecA][Thy] were successfully verified. Hence, the feasible operation, high extraction efficiency and excellent selectivity make the developed hydrophobic DESs-based vortex-assisted LLME attractive in dyes separation.

Exploring Enzymatic Conformational Dynamics at Surfaces through μ-FTIR Spectromicroscopy

Immobilization of proteins onto solid supports has critical industrial, technological, and medical applications, and is a daily task in chemical research. Significant conformational rearrangements often occur due to enzyme-surface interactions, and it is of broad interest to develop methods to probe and better understand these molecular-level changes that contribute to the enzyme's catalytic activity and stability. While circular dichroism is a common method for solution-phase conformational study, the application to surface-supported proteins is not trivial and spatial mapping is not viable. On the other hand, a nonlinear laser spectroscopy technique used to analyze surfaces and interfaces is not often found in most laboratories, therefore requiring an alternative and reliable method. Here, we employed high-dimensional data spectromicroscopy analysis in the infrared region (μ-FTIR) to investigate the enzyme's conformational change when adsorbed onto solid matrices, across a ca. 20 mm2 area. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzyme was adopted as a model enzyme to interact with CaF2, Au, and Au-thiol model substrates, strategically chosen for mapping the enzyme dynamics on solid surfaces with different polarity/hydrophobicity properties and extendable to other materials. Two-dimensional chemical maps indicate that the enzyme adsorbs with different patterns in which secondary structures dynamically adjust to optimize interprotein and enzyme-surface interactions. The results suggest an experimental approach to identify and map enzyme conformational dynamics onto different solid surfaces across space and provide insights into immobilized protein structure investigations for areas such as biosensing and bioenergy.

Infrared Spectrum Characteristics and Quantification of OH Groups in Coal

The KBr pellet press method for detecting the infrared spectrum of coal is one of the commonly used methods for analyzing the types and content of functional groups in coal. However, KBr crystalline water or moisture has a significant impact on the peak position, peak shape, and peak area of the organic O-H based stretching vibration wave in coal. In this paper, the theoretical characteristics of infrared spectra of phenols and alcohols have been simulated and analyzed using the Gaussian 16 series of programs. Four infrared spectral analysis techniques, in situ infrared, KBr pellet press, dry KBr pellet press, and paste methods, have been used to detect the infrared spectra of coal. The results show that the stretching vibration peaks of free O-H radicals without hydrogen bonding are located between 3700 and 3600 cm^-1. After the O-H form hydrogen bonds with each other, the O-H stretching vibration frequency moves toward the low frequency direction, and the lower the wavenumber, the more O-H content. The conventional KBr gasket manufacturing process will absorb moisture in the air to interfere with the hydroxyl absorption peak of coal, and the experimental process requires absolute drying. The relative content of hydroxyl in coal can be compared and analyzed based on the peak position, peak shape, and peak area of the hydroxyl stretching vibration wave. Quantitative analysis of hydroxyl groups in coal also requires combination of elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Performance Optimization of a Developed Near-Infrared Spectrometer Using Calibration Transfer with a Variety of Transfer Samples for Geographical Origin Identification of Coffee Beans

This research aimed to improve the classification performance of a developed near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer when applied to the geographical origin identification of coffee bean samples. The modification was based on the utilization of a collection of spectral databases from several different agricultural samples, including corn, red beans, mung beans, black beans, soybeans, green and roasted coffee, adzuki beans, and paddy and white rice. These databases were established using a reference NIR instrument and the piecewise direct standardization (PDS) calibration transfer method. To evaluate the suitability of the transfer samples, the Davies-Bouldin index (DBI) was calculated. The outcomes that resulted in low DBI values were likely to produce better classification rates. The classification of coffee origins was based on the use of a supervised self-organizing map (SSOM). Without the spectral modification, SSOM classification using the developed NIR instrument resulted in predictive ability (% PA), model stability (% MS), and correctly classified instances (% CC) values of 61%, 58%, and 64%, respectively. After the transformation process was completed with the corn, red bean, mung bean, white rice, and green coffee NIR spectral data, the predictive performance of the SSOM models was found to have improved (67-79% CC). The best classification performance was observed with the use of corn, producing improved % PA, % MS, and % CC values at 71%, 67%, and 79%, respectively.

Association and solubility of chlorophenols in CCl4: MIR/NIR spectroscopic and DFT study

This work provides new information on the effect of position and number of substituents on association and solubility of chlorophenols in CCl₄. Using MIR and NIR spectroscopy we examined solutions of 12 chlorophenols at several concentrations. In addition, we calculated (DFT) theoretical spectra and structures of monomers and associates of chlorophenols from dimer to tetramer. The number of substituents at positions 2 and 6 allows to divide studied chlorophenols into three Groups: I (3; 4; 3,4; 3,5), II (2; 2,3; 2,4; 2,5; 2,4,5), and III (2,6; 2,4,6; 2,3,4,5,6). An equilibrium between intermolecular OH⋅⋅⋅OH and intramolecular OH⋅⋅⋅Cl hydrogen bonding depends on position and number of substituents. The extent of association decreases in going from Group I to Group III due to growing steric hindrance near the OH group and the resonance effect from Cl. In chlorophenols of Group I, Cl at positions 3 or 5 weakens the OH⋅⋅⋅OH intermolecular hydrogen bonding, while for Group II it strengthens the OH⋅⋅⋅⋅Cl intramolecular bonding. In contrast, Cl at position 4 has minor effect on association. In the case of Group I, increasing concentration shifts the equilibrium towards solute-solute interactions, whereas for Groups II and III dominate the species with intramolecular OH⋅⋅⋅Cl bonding. The theoretical calculations predict that for monosubstituted chlorophenols of Group I the most stable are non-planar cyclic tetramers, while for disubstituted ones, the non-planar cyclic tetramers and linear trimers have similar binding energies. Chlorophenols of Group II prefer the cyclic non-planar trimers, whereas those of Group III form the planar dimers with an antiparallel orientation of the OH groups. Our study reveals that chlorophenols creating the cyclic associates are better soluble in CCl₄ as compared with those forming the linear ones. Hence, one can conclude that in an inert or weakly interacting solvents the solubility is closely related to the structure of the solute associates.

Diclofenac Ion Hydration: Experimental and Theoretical Search for Anion Pairs

Self-assembly of organic ions in aqueous solutions is a hot topic at the present time, and substances that are well-soluble in water are usually studied. In this work, aqueous solutions of sodium diclofenac are investigated, which, like most medicinal compounds, is poorly soluble in water. Classical MD modeling of an aqueous solution of diclofenac sodium showed equilibrium between the hydrated anion and the hydrated dimer of the diclofenac anion. The assignment and interpretation of the bands in the UV, NIR, and IR spectra are based on DFT calculations in the discrete-continuum approximation. It has been shown that the combined use of spectroscopic methods in various frequency ranges with classical MD simulations and DFT calculations provides valuable information on the association processes of medical compounds in aqueous solutions. Additionally, such a combined application of experimental and calculation methods allowed us to put forward a hypothesis about the mechanism of the effect of diclofenac sodium in high dilutions on a solution of diclofenac sodium.

Solvent Effect on Assembling and Interactions in Solutions of Phenol: Infrared Spectroscopic and Density Functional Theory Study

This work provides new insight into assembling of phenol in various solvents and competition between different kinds of interactions. To examine both weak and strong interactions, we selected a series of non-aromatic and aromatic solvents. Infrared spectra were measured at low (0.05 M) and high (2 M) phenol content. In addition, we performed density functional theory calculations of the structures and harmonic vibrational spectra of 1:1 complexes of phenol with the solvents and the associates of phenol from dimer to tetramer. Based on these results, we divided the solvents into three groups. The first group consists of non-aromatic solvents weakly interacting with phenol. Depending on the concentration, molecules of phenol in these solvents remain non-bonded or self-associated. In diluted solutions of phenol in chlorinated non-aromatic solvents do not appear free OH groups, since they are involved in a weak OH···Cl interaction. It is of note that in diluted solutions of phenol in tetramethyl ethylene both the non-bonded and bonded OH coexists due to solvent-solvent interactions. The second group consists of aromatic solvents with methyl or chlorine substituents. At low concentration, the molecules of phenol are involved in the phenol-solvent OH···π interaction and the strength of these interactions depends on the solvent properties. At a higher phenol content an equilibrium exists between phenol-solvent OH···π and phenol-phenol OH···OH interactions. Finally, the third group includes the aromatic and non-aromatic solvents with highly polar group (C≡N). In these solvents, regardless of the concentration all molecules of phenol are involved in the solute-solvent OH···NC interaction. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical band parameters reveals that molecules of phenol in non-aromatic solvents prefer the cyclic associates, while in the aromatic solvents they tend to form the linear associates.

Solvent effect on the competition between weak and strong interactions in phenol solutions studied by near-infrared spectroscopy and DFT calculations

Near-infrared (NIR) spectra of phenol in a series of non-aromatic and aromatic solvents were recorded to study the competition between various types of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions. Depending on the phenol concentration, the free OH and OH involved in the OH⋯OH interactions in the dimers and higher associates are present in cyclohexane solutions. On the other hand, free OH does not appear in Cl-containing solvents since at a low phenol content the OH groups participate in the OH⋯Cl interactions. In CCl₄ and tetrachloroethylene this interaction is weak, while in chlorobenzene the strength of this interaction is higher. In the aromatic solvents the solute-solute OH⋯OH interactions compete with the solute-solvent OH⋯π and aromatic CH⋯OH ones. Consequently, the degree of self-association of phenol in aromatic solvents is smaller than that in non-aromatic ones. The strength of the OH⋯π interactions increases with growing electron-donating ability of the substituents in the benzene derivatives. This observation obtained from the NIR spectra is in line with the results of the theoretical calculations (DFT). A clear correlation appears between the number of methyl groups in aromatic solvents and the population of the free OH groups. The methyl groups are steric hindrances and impede the formation of the OH⋯OH and OH⋯π interactions. Our results suggest the presence of aromatic CH⋯OH solute-solvent interactions, not observed in previous studies. NIR spectroscopy appears to be a powerful tool for exploration of free and weakly-bonded OH groups.

Anharmonic DFT Study of Near-Infrared Spectra of Caffeine: Vibrational Analysis of the Second Overtones and Ternary Combinations

Anharmonic quantum chemical calculations were employed to simulate and interpret a near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of caffeine. First and second overtones, as well as binary and ternary combination bands, were obtained, accurately reproducing the lineshape of the experimental spectrum in the region of 10,000–4000 cm⁻¹ (1000–2500 nm). The calculations enabled performing a detailed analysis of NIR spectra of caffeine, including weak bands due to the second overtones and ternary combinations. A highly convoluted nature of NIR spectrum of caffeine was unveiled, with numerous overlapping bands found beneath the observed spectral lineshape. To properly reflect that intrinsic complexity, the band assignments were provided in the form of heat maps presenting the contributions to the NIR spectrum from various kinds of vibrational transitions. These contributions were also quantitatively assessed in terms of the integral intensities. It was found that the combination bands provide the decisively dominant contributions to the NIR spectrum of caffeine. The first overtones gain significant importance between 6500–5500 cm⁻¹, while the second overtones are meaningful in the higher wavenumber regions, particularly in the 10,000–7000 cm⁻¹ region. The obtained detailed band assignments enabled deep interpretation of the absorption regions of caffeine identified in the literature as meaningful for analytical applications of NIR spectroscopy focused on quantitative analysis of caffeine content in drugs and natural products.

Advances, challenges and perspectives of quantum chemical approaches in molecular spectroscopy of the condensed phase

The purpose of this review is to demonstrate advances, challenges and perspectives of quantum chemical approaches in molecular spectroscopy of the condensed phase. Molecular spectroscopy, particularly vibrational spectroscopy and electronic spectroscopy, has been used extensively for a wide range of areas of chemical sciences and materials science as well as nano- and biosciences because it provides valuable information about structure, functions, and reactions of molecules. In the meantime, quantum chemical approaches play crucial roles in the spectral analysis. They also yield important knowledge about molecular and electronic structures as well as electronic transitions. The combination of spectroscopic approaches and quantum chemical calculations is a powerful tool for science, in general. Thus, our article, which treats various spectroscopy and quantum chemical approaches, should have strong implications in the wider scientific community. This review covers a wide area of molecular spectroscopy from far-ultraviolet (FUV, 120-200 nm) to far-infrared (FIR, 400-10 cm-1)/terahertz and Raman spectroscopy. As quantum chemical approaches, we introduce several anharmonic approaches such as vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) and the combination of periodic harmonic calculations with anharmonic corrections based on finite models, grid-based techniques like the Numerov approach, the Cartesian coordinate tensor transfer (CCT) method, Symmetry-Adapted Cluster Configuration-Interaction (SAC-CI), and the ZINDO (Semi-empirical calculations at Zerner's Intermediate Neglect of Differential Overlap). One can use anharmonic approaches and grid-based approaches for both infrared (IR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, while CCT methods are employed for Raman, Raman optical activity (ROA), FIR/terahertz and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy. Therefore, this review overviews cross relations between molecular spectroscopy and quantum chemical approaches, and provides various kinds of close-reality advanced spectral simulation for condensed phases.

Low temperature photoluminescence and solvatochromic studies of organic hybrid 4-methoxybenzylammonium chloride (4-MBACl)

We report temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) and solvatochromic studies of 4-methoxybenzylammonium chloride (4-MBACl). The single crystals of 4-MBACl has been grown using slow solvent evaporation method under ambient conditions and have been confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic studies. Thermal stability of the material has been analyzed by thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analyzes (DTA). 4-MBACl crystal is photoluminescent with emission wavelength maximum at 300 nm. Exciton-phonon coupling in 4-MBACl is realized from temperature dependent PL studies. Changes in full width at half maximum (FWHM) of PL emission peak, intensity maximum (I_max) and wavelength maximum (λ_max) have been analyzed systematically between temperatures 290-10 K in order to understand the photophysical phenomenon behind the emission. Optical band gap (E_g) of 4-MBACl has been varied using solvent polarity, proticity and solution concentration. Interactions like OH---O, OH---π and π-π stacking are explained to reason the notable shifts.

Enhanced Solubility and Bioavailability of Dolutegravir by Solid Dispersion Method: In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation-a Potential Approach for HIV Therapy

Being a candidate of BCS class II, dolutegravir (DTG), a recently approved antiretroviral drug, possesses solubility issues. The current research was aimed to improve the solubility of the DTG and thereby enhance its efficacy using the solid dispersion technique. In due course, the miscibility study of the drug was performed with different polymers, where Poloxamer 407 (P407) was found suitable to move forward. The solid dispersion of DTG and P407 was formulated using solvent evaporation technique with a 1:1 proportion of drug and polymer, where the solid-state characterization was performed using differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. No physicochemical interaction was found between the DTG and P407 in the fabricated solid dispersion; however, crystalline state of the drug was changed to amorphous as evident from the X-ray diffractogram. A rapid release of DTG was observed from the solid dispersion (>95%), which is highly significant (p<0.05) as compared to pure drug (11.40%), physical mixture (20.07%) and marketed preparation of DTG (35.30%). The drug release from the formulated solid dispersion followed Weibull model kinetics. Finally, the rapid drug release from the solid dispersion formulation revealed increased C_max (14.56 μg/mL) when compared to the physical mixture (4.12 μg/mL) and pure drug (3.45 μg/mL). This was further reflected by improved bioavailability of DTG (AUC: 105.99±10.07 μg/h/mL) in the experimental Wistar rats when compared to the AUC of animals administered with physical mixture (54.45±6.58 μg/h/mL) and pure drug (49.27±6.16 μg/h/mL). Therefore, it could be concluded that the dissolution profile and simultaneously the bioavailability of DTG could be enhanced by means of the solid dispersion platform using the hydrophilic polymer, P407, which could be projected towards improved efficacy of the drug in HIV/AIDS.

Graphical Transition Moment Decomposition and Conceptual Density Functional Theory Approaches to Study the Fundamental and Lower-Level Overtone Absorption Intensities of Some OH Stretching Vibrations

The investigation of electron density migrations caused by molecular structure changes is of central importance in various fields of chemistry. To address this topic in general and to study absorption intensities of vibrations, we analyze sensitive dipole moment functions (DMFs) of a molecule by combining the linear response function of conceptual DFT and bond dipoles separated by the quantum theory of atoms in molecules with a graphical transition moment decomposition scheme. The fundamental intensities of OH stretching vibrations depend strongly on the substituents but only weakly on the molecular conformations. Interestingly, in some alcohols, completely opposite trends have been observed for the lower-level overtone intensities: a weak substituent dependence but a stronger conformation dependence. It is well known that the formation of a hydrogen-bonded complex increases the OH stretching fundamental intensity, but less well known is the decrease in their overtone intensities. To investigate these characteristics comprehensively, we calculated their intensities (Δv = 1, 2, and 3) for conformers of ethanol and trifluoroethanol (TFE) and hydrogen-bonded phenol (PhOH) systems via the DFT method in the local mode model for the OH stretching coordinate ΔR. Their first and second derivatives of the electron density with respect to ΔR were calculated and interpreted using their bond moments. For ethanol and TFE, the OH, CC, and CH bond moments were found to make an important contribution to the molecular DMF derivatives parallel to the OH bond. The OH bond contributes only to the first derivative of DMF, and its conformational dependence is determined by the magnitude of the charge polarization of each structure. The electron density derivatives in the CC bond region were largely maintained during the internal rotation; thus, their conformation-dependent contributions were expressed by a geometrical factor of the CC bond direction. The CH bond at the antiperiplanar position of the OH bond was found to make a remarkably large contribution to the second derivative of DMF in the gauche conformer. The importance of electron density migration on substituents was also identified in the hydrogen-bonded phenol, in which the π-electron density change on the aromatic ring was clearly shown. This migration creates the DMF derivatives both perpendicular and parallel to the OH bond and strongly affects the absorption intensities. In all the cases, some bond moments on the substituents contribute to the first and second DMF derivatives in a structure-dependent manner, thus explaining their stereoelectronic effects.

The coupling of localised, vibrational modes - Probing OH-bands of organic molecules via a two dimensional Numerov approach

In this article the extension of the grid-based Numerov approach to probe two coupled, localised vibrational modes is assessed. The theoretically obtained wave numbers are compared to experimental results for five increasingly complex organic molecules carrying two OH groups measured in gas-phase as well as carbon tetrachloride. By using an appropriate spacing of the associated potential energy grid a deviation of the predicted wave numbers with experiment of ≤1% is achieved for both the fundamental and the first overtone bands. In particular the calculated wave numbers of aliphatic species in vacuum underline the versatility of this approach. In addition, it is demonstrated that bicubic interpolation is a viable strategy to greatly reduce the required data points and thus, the computational effort. Comparison of predicted wave numbers obtained for different conformers with experimental data enables the identification of the most relevant conformer present in solution. Since especially the accurate calculation of overtone vibrations is known to be challenging in case of strongly anharmonic potentials such as OH bonds, the presented approach provides a particularly efficient route to study the properties of the associated overtone contribution under the influence of inter-mode coupling. This is due to the fact that the Numerov approach requires no assumption about form and composition of the vibrational wave functions. In addition, the presented method also provides one of the simplest routes to access combined excitations of the considered vibrational modes.

Solvation effects on wavenumbers and absorption intensities of the OH-stretch vibration in phenolic compounds – electrical- and mechanical anharmonicity via a combined DFT/Numerov approach

A previously measured oscillatory intensity pattern in phenolic compounds between different solvents was successfully reproduced for the first time, employing modern grid-based methods to solve the time-independent vibrational Schrödinger equation.

Simulated NIR spectra as sensitive markers of the structure and interactions in nucleobases

Near-infrared (near-IR; NIR) spectroscopy is continuously advancing in biophysical and biochemical fields of investigation. For instance, recent progresses in NIR hyperspectral imaging of biological systems may be noted. However, interpretation of NIR bands for biological samples is difficult and creates a considerable barrier in exploring the full potential of NIR spectroscopy in bioscience. For this reason, we carried out a systematic study of NIR spectra of adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine in polycrystalline state. Interpretation of NIR spectra of these nucleobases was supported by anharmonic vibrational analysis using Deperturbed Vibrational Second-Order Perturbation Theory (DVPT2). A number of molecular models of nucleobases was applied to study the effect of the inter-molecular interactions on the NIR spectra. The accuracy of simulated NIR spectra appears to depend on the intra-layer interactions; in contrast, the inter-layer interactions are less influential. The best results were achieved by combining the simulated spectra of monomers and dimers. It is of particular note that in-plane deformation bands are far more populated than out-of-plane ones and the importance of ring modes is relatively small. This trend is in contrast to that observed in mid-IR region. As shown, the local, short-range chemical neighborhood of nucleobase molecules influence their NIR spectra more considerably. This suggests that NIR spectra are more sensitive probe of the nucleobase pairing than mid-IR ones. The obtained results allow, for the first time, to construct a frequency correlation table for NIR spectra of purines and pyrimidines.

Systematic discovery about NIR spectral assignment from chemical structural property to natural chemical compounds

Spectra-structure interrelationship is still the weakness of NIR spectral assignment. In this paper, a comprehensive investigation from chemical structural property to natural chemical compounds was carried out for NIR spectral assignment. Surprisingly, we discovered that NIR absorption frequency of the skeleton structure with sp² hybridization is higher than one with sp³ hybridization. Specifically, substituent was another vital factor to be explored, the first theory discovery demonstrated that the absorption intensity of methyl substituted benzene at 2330 nm has a linear relationship with the number of substituted methyl C-H. The greater the number of electrons given to the substituents, the larger the displacement distance of absorption bands is. In addition, the steric hindrance caused by the substituent could regularly reduce the intensity of NIR absorption bands. Furthermore, the characteristic bands and group attribution of 29 natural chemical compounds from 4 types have been systematic assigned. These meaningful discoveries provide guidance for NIR spectral assignment from chemical structural property to natural chemical compounds.

Spectra-Structure Correlations in Isotopomers of Ethanol (CX3CX2OX; X = H, D): Combined Near-Infrared and Anharmonic Computational Study

The effect of isotopic substitution on near-infrared (NIR) spectra has not been studied in detail. With an exception of few major bands, it is difficult to follow the spectral changes due to complexity of NIR spectra. Recent progress in anharmonic quantum mechanical calculations allows for accurate reconstruction of NIR spectra. Taking this opportunity, we carried out a systematic study of NIR spectra of six isotopomers of ethanol (CX₃CX₂OX; X = H, D). Besides, we calculated the theoretical spectra of two other isotopomers (CH₃CD₂OD and CD₃CH₂OD) for which the experimental spectra are not available. The anharmonic calculations were based on generalized vibrational second-order perturbation theory (GVPT2) at DFT and MP2 levels with several basis sets. We compared the accuracy and efficiency of various computational methods. It appears that the best results were obtained with B2PLYP-GD3BJ/def2-TZVP//CPCM approach. Our simulations included the first and second overtones, as well as binary and ternary combinations bands. This way, we reliably reproduced even minor bands in the spectra of diluted samples (0.1 M in CCl₄). On this basis, the effect of isotopic substitution on NIR spectra of ethanol was accurately reproduced and comprehensively explained.

The interplay and strength of the π⋯HF, C⋯HF, F⋯HF and F⋯HC hydrogen bonds upon the formation of multimolecular complexes based on C2H2⋯HF and C2H4⋯HF small dimers

The conception of this theoretical research was idealized aiming to unveil the intermolecular structures of complexes formed by acetylene or ethylene and hydrofluoric acid. At light of computational calculations by using the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) method, the geometries of the C₂H₂⋯(HF), C₂H₂⋯2(HF), C₂H₂⋯4(HF), C₂H₄⋯(HF), C₂H₄⋯2(HF) and C₂H₄⋯4(HF) hydrogen-bonded complexes were fully optimized. Moreover, the Post-Hartree-Fock calculations MP2/6-311++G(d,p), MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ, MP4(SDQ)/6-311++G(d,p) and CCSD/6-311++G(d,p) also were also used. The infrared spectra were analyzed in order to identify the new vibrational modes and frequencies of the proton donors shifted to red region. Through the modeling of charge-fluxes on the basis of the Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) and, by contradicting the expectation of the hydrofluorination mechanisms of acetylene or ethylene, C⋯HF was recognized as a new type of hydrogen bond instead of the already well known π⋯H. The calculations of the Natural Bonding Orbital (NBO) and Charges derived from the Electrostatic Potential Grid-based (ChElPG) were also applied to interpret the shifting frequencies as well as measuring of the punctual charge-transfer after the formation of the complexes. Finally, the determination of the stabilization energy was carried out through the arguments of the Fock matrix in NBO basis and through the supermolecule approach. Also it is worthwhile to notice that some algebraic formulations were used for determining the electronic cooperative effect (CE).

Breakthrough Potential in Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: Spectra Simulation. A Review of Recent Developments

Near-infrared (12,500–4,000 cm⁻¹; 800–2,500 nm) spectroscopy is the hallmark for one of the most rapidly advancing analytical techniques over the last few decades. Although it is mainly recognized as an analytical tool, near-infrared spectroscopy has also contributed significantly to physical chemistry, e.g., by delivering invaluable data on the anharmonic nature of molecular vibrations or peculiarities of intermolecular interactions. In all these contexts, a major barrier in the form of an intrinsic complexity of near-infrared spectra has been encountered. A large number of overlapping vibrational contributions influenced by anharmonic effects create complex patterns of spectral dependencies, in many cases hindering our comprehension of near-infrared spectra. Quantum mechanical calculations commonly serve as a major support to infrared and Raman studies; conversely, near-infrared spectroscopy has long been hindered in this regard due to practical limitations. Advances in anharmonic theories in hyphenation with ever-growing computer technology have enabled feasible theoretical near-infrared spectroscopy in recent times. Accordingly, a growing number of quantum mechanical investigations aimed at near-infrared region has been witnessed. The present review article summarizes these most recent accomplishments in the emerging field. Applications of generalized approaches, such as vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational second order perturbation theories as well as their derivatives, and dense grid-based studies of vibrational potential, are overviewed. Basic and applied studies are discussed, with special attention paid to the ones which aim at improving analytical spectroscopy. A remarkable potential arises from the growing applicability of anharmonic computations to solving the problems which arise in both basic and analytical near-infrared spectroscopy. This review highlights an increased value of quantum mechanical calculations to near-infrared spectroscopy in relation to other kinds of vibrational spectroscopy.

Anharmonic calculations of frequencies and intensities of OH stretching vibrations of (R)-1,3-butanediol conformers in the fundamentals and first overtones by density functional theory

The frequencies and absorption intensities of the five kinds of conformers of 1,3-butanediol with the same carbon skeleton (GG') were calculated by anharmonic calculation for the fundamentals and first overtones of OH stretching vibrations. The four kinds of conformers form intramolecular hydrogen bonds and one conformer did not. Intramolecular hydrogen bond formation shifted the frequency of fundamental and first overtone of H-bonding OH stretching vibration to the lower frequency. The absorption intensities of the fundamentals as well as the vibrational anharmonicities increased upon hydrogen bond formation, while the intensities of first overtones decreased. The differences of conformers were clearly seen in the frequencies of the first overtones of free OH.

Spectra-structure correlations in NIR region: Spectroscopic and anharmonic DFT study of n-hexanol, cyclohexanol and phenol

We investigated near-infrared (7500-4000 cm^-1) spectra of n-hexanol, cyclohexanol and phenol in CCl₄ (0.2 M) by using anharmonic quantum calculations. These molecules represent three major kinds of alcohols; linear and cyclic aliphatic, and aromatic ones. Vibrational second-order perturbation theory (VPT2) was employed to calculate the first overtones and binary combination modes and to reproduce the experimental NIR spectra. The level of conformational flexibility of these three alcohols varies from one stable conformer of phenol through four conformers of cyclohexanol to few hundreds conformers in the case of n-hexanol. To take into account the most relevant conformational population of n-hexanol, a systematic conformational search was performed. Accurate reproduction of the experimental NIR spectra was achieved and detailed spectra-structure correlations were obtained for these three alcohols. VPT2 approach provides less reliable description of highly anharmonic modes, i.e. OH stretching. In the present work this limitation was manifested in erroneous results yielded by VPT2 for 2νOH mode of cyclohexanol. To study the anharmonicity of this mode we solved the corresponding time-independent Schrödinger equation based on a dense-grid probing of the relevant vibrational potential. These results allowed for significant improvement of the agreement between the calculated and experimental 2νOH band of cyclohexanol. Various important biomolecules include similar structural units to the systems investigated here. A detailed knowledge on spectral properties of these three types of alcohols is therefore essential for advancing our understanding of NIR spectroscopy of biomolecules.

Effects of intermolecular interactions on absorption intensities of the fundamental and the first, second, and third overtones of OH stretching vibrations of methanol and t-butanol‑d9 in n-hexane studied by visible/near-infrared/infrared spectroscopy

Visible (Vis), near-infrared (NIR) and IR spectra in the 15,600-2500cm^-1 region were measured for methanol, methanol-d₃, and t-butanol-d₉ in n-hexane to investigate effects of intermolecular interaction on absorption intensities of the fundamental and the first, second, and third overtones of their OH stretching vibrations. The relative area intensities of OH stretching bands of free and hydrogen-bonded species were plotted versus the vibrational quantum number using logarithm plots (V=1-4) for 0.5M methanol, 0.5M methanol‑d₃, and 0.5M t-butanol-d₉ in n-hexane. In the logarithm plots the relative intensities of free species yield a linear dependence irrespective of the solutes while those of hydrogen-bonded species deviate significantly from the linearity. The observed results suggest that the modifications in dipole moment functions of the OH bond induced by the formation of the hydrogen bondings change transient dipole moment, leading to the deviations of the dependences of relative absorption intensities on the vibrational quantum number from the linearity.

The interaction strengths and spectroscopy parameters of the C2H2∙∙∙HX and HCN∙∙∙HX complexes (X = F, Cl, CN, and CCH) and related ternary systems valued by fluxes of charge densities: QTAIM, CCFO, and NBO calculations

This theoretical work exhibits a new systematic study of structural parameters, electronic properties, infrared vibration modes, and molecular topography of hydrogen complexes, namely linear-type HCN⋯HX and T-type C₂H₂⋯HX (X = F, Cl, CN, and CCH). Ideally, the knowledge of the ternary systems of C₂H₂⋯HCN⋯HF and HCN⋯HCN⋯HF whose subparts integrate the linear and T-shaped complexes were used to give support in this current research. By means of computational calculations carried out in both levels B3LYP and MP2, the variations of the HX bond lengths are clearly overestimated in the HCN⋯HX linear complexes. In agreement with the analyses of the electrostatic potentials, the higher intermolecular energies of these complexes agree with the larger red-shifts in the stretch frequencies in HX. Also, the QTAIM descriptors and NBO calculations were used to inspect the interaction strength as well as to confirm the π cloud as a proton accepting center. By taking into account the absorption intensity ratio as a standard parameter to predict the interaction strength and intermolecular characterization, the formalism of the charge-charge flux-overlap modified (CCFO) was applied.

Evaluating the Molecular Interaction of Organic Liquid Mixtures Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

The near-infrared transmission spectra of two organic liquid three-component systems of variable compositions were investigated in detail. To evaluate the interaction of the different components in the two systems the experimental spectra of the pure components were compared to mathematically constructed "pure component" spectra. Though usually the correlation coefficient (CC) and Manhattan distance (MD) are used to measure the similarity of spectra, in the present investigations principal component analysis (PCA) was found to be a more effective tool to investigate the difference between these spectra and derive parameters characterizing the interaction between the different components. Thus, PC scores for the two types of spectra established some distinct patterns which clearly expressed their differences. For a three-dimensional coordinate system of selected principal components, the Euclidean distances between the mathematically constructed and the experimental spectra of the pure components were calculated. Finally, the mean values of the distances for each component provided indices to rank the interaction of the components in the mixtures. Thus, the results offer a convenient approach that can quantitatively evaluate the molecular interactions of the individual components in organic liquid mixtures by various spectroscopies.

A spectroscopic and theoretical study in the near-infrared region of low concentration aliphatic alcohols

The near-infrared (NIR) spectra of low-concentration (5 × 10⁻³ M) solutions in CCl₄ of basic aliphatic alcohols, methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol were, for the first time, calculated by second-order vibrational perturbation theory computations and were compared with the corresponding experimental data.

Combined IR/NIR and density functional theory calculations analysis of the solvent effects on frequencies and intensities of the fundamental and overtones of the C ═ O stretching vibrations of acetone and 2-hexanone

Vibrational overtone studies primarily focus on X-H stretching overtone transitions, where X is an atom like C, O, N, or S. In contrast, the studies on the C ═ O stretching overtones are very scattered. To advance the research in this field, we measured the fundamental, first, and second overtones of the C ═ O stretching vibration of acetone and 2-hexanone in n-hexane, CCl4, and CHCl3, as well as in the vapor phase using FT-IR/FT-NIR spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have also been performed to help the assignment of the C ═ O stretching bands and to guide interpretation of the experimental results. It was found that the wavenumbers, absorption intensities, and oscillator strengths of the C ═ O stretching bands show marked solvent dependence. In the fundamental and the first overtone regions, the intensities of the C ═ O stretching vibration were found to be pronouncedly more intense than those of the C-H stretching vibration. In the second overtone region, the intensities of the C-H stretching vibration are comparable to those of the C ═ O stretching vibration. The theoretical and observed decrease in integrated intensity upon going from the fundamental to the first overtone of the C ═ O stretching vibration is around 50, which is significantly larger than those of the O-H, C-H, and S-H stretching vibration. Both the calculated and experimental results suggest that excessive weakness in the C ═ O stretching overtone was shown to be a result of both a low anharmonicity and a substantial reduction in the oscillator strength. These results provide new insight into our understanding of the C ═ O stretching vibration.

Fundamental and overtone vibrational spectroscopy, enthalpy of hydrogen bond formation and equilibrium constant determination of the methanol-dimethylamine complex

We have measured gas phase vibrational spectra of the bimolecular complex formed between methanol (MeOH) and dimethylamine (DMA) up to about 9800 cm(-1). In addition to the strong fundamental OH-stretching transition we have also detected the weak second overtone NH-stretching transition. The spectra of the complex are obtained by spectral subtraction of the monomer spectra from spectra recorded for the mixture. For comparison, we also measured the fundamental OH-stretching transition in the bimolecular complex between MeOH and trimethylamine (TMA). The enthalpies of hydrogen bond formation (ΔH) for the MeOH-DMA and MeOH-TMA complexes have been determined by measurements of the fundamental OH-stretching transition in the temperature range from 298 to 358 K. The enthalpy of formation is found to be -35.8 ± 3.9 and -38.2 ± 3.3 kJ mol(-1) for MeOH-DMA and MeOH-TMA, respectively, in the 298 to 358 K region. The equilibrium constant (Kp) for the formation of the MeOH-DMA complex has been determined from the measured and calculated transition intensities of the OH-stretching fundamental transition and the NH-stretching second overtone transition. The transition intensities were calculated using an anharmonic oscillator local mode model with dipole moment and potential energy curves calculated using explicitly correlated coupled cluster methods. The equilibrium constant for formation of the MeOH-DMA complex was determined to be 0.2 ± 0.1 atm(-1), corresponding to a ΔG value of about 4.0 kJ mol(-1).
