Abstract
Synthetic breakthroughs diversify the molecules and polymers available to chemists. We now report the first successful synthesis of a series of optically-pure 2,2'-tethered binaphthyl-embedded helical ladder polymers based on quantitative and chemoselective ladderization by the modified alkyne benzannulations using the 4-alkoxy-2,6-dimethylphenylethynyl group as the alkyne source, inaccessible by the conventional approach lacking the 2,6-dimethyl substituents. Due to the defect-free helix formation, the circular dichroism signal increased by more than 6 times the previously reported value. The resulting helical secondary structure can be fine-tuned by controlling the binaphthyl dihedral angle in the repeating unit with variations in the 2,2'-alkylenedioxy tethering groups by one carbon atom at a time. The optimization of the helical ladder structures led to a strong circularly polarized luminescence with a high fluorescence quantum yield (28 %) and luminescence dissymmetry factor (2.6×10-3 ).

Abstract
Optically active C2-symmetric bis(aminophenols) based on (R)-2,2'-diaminobinaphthyl (BiniqH4) and (R,R)-2,3-butanediyldianthranilate (BdanH4) have been prepared by condensation of the diamines with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol. Group 10 bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes (R)-(Biniq)M (M = Pd, Pt) and (C,R,R)-(Bdan)Pd have been prepared by oxidatively metalating the corresponding ligands. In (R)-(Biniq)M, the C2 axis passes through the approximate square plane of the bis(iminosemiquinone)metal core, while in (C,R,R)-(Bdan)Pd the C2 axis is perpendicular to this plane. In the latter compound, the (R,R)-butanediyl strap binds selectively over one enantioface of the metal complex in a conformation where the methyl groups are anti to one another. Osmium oxo complexes with the intrinsically chiral OsO(amidophenoxide)2 chromophore are obtained by metalation of OsO(OCH2CH2O)2 with (R,R)-BdanH4. Both the (A,R,R) and (C,R,R) diastereomers can be observed, with metalation in refluxing toluene selectively giving the latter isomer. The electronic structures of the complexes are illuminated by the circular dichroism spectra, in conjuction with the optical spectra and TDDFT calculations.

Abstract
Chiral cyclic tetraphenylethylenes (TPEs) were synthesized by cyclization with chiral binaphthols. The helical conformation can be immobilized and multi-isomers can be separated resulting from (Z/E)-isomerism and helical chirality of TPE. The chiral cyclic TPEs can emit deep blue circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in both solution and film states.

Abstract
Double-twisted cyclic binaphthyls, in which two naphthalenes are tethered by -O(CH2 )n O- linkage (n=1-3), have been synthesized. X-ray analyses and DFT calculations revealed a tightly constrained stereogenic figure-eight geometry. Tethering of two naphthalenes by short linkage forces a small dihedral angle, and the cyclic binaphthyls with short tether (n=1, 2) exhibit remarkable boosting of the glum value (1.0-1.6×10-2 ) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and unusual glum /gabs ratios (0.93-1.3). These experimental high |glum | values are in accord with the results of excited state TD-DFT calculations, which show transannular interactions and that consequent extensive delocalization occurs throughout the figure-eight π-core. As a result, the present figure-eight luminophore promote the elongation of the magnetic transition dipole moment that results in significant increases in glum values.

Abstract
A curved stereogenic [6]paraphenylene ([6]PP), anchoring a chiral binaphthyl scaffold at 7,7'-positions, was prepared and investigated for its properties as a solid-state circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) dye. X-ray analysis revealed a helically twisted structure of PP units induced by axial chirality of binaphthyl framework. The curved [6]PP exhibits fluorescence in powder and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film as well as solution. A significant increase in quantum yield was observed for a non-fluid PMMA film owing the suppression of the molecular motion. The gCPL values of the dye in solution and as PMMA film were almost the same (4.3-4.4×10-3 ) and lager than that in powder. TD-DFT calculations in the excited state suggest that the exciton can be delocalized into a twisted PP unit to produce a larger magnetic transition dipole moment.

Abstract
2,2'-Diaryl-1,1'-biazulenes were synthesized and electronic communication between the azulene subunits was suggested based on redox measurements. The linkage of azulene at the 1-position also appeared to increase the HOMO levels. In addition, cyclic voltammetry measurements of 2-arylazulenes showed a return peak associated with the oxidation, which was not observed for azulene. The stabilization of the single-electron oxidant may be due to the SOMO-HOMO energy inversion phenomenon. X-ray crystallography of the azulene dimers revealed that this species possessed a syn-type structure in which both aryl groups in the 2-positions formed π-stacks. The twisted structure was indicated to be in the (R)- or (S)-configuration for all molecules in the unit cell. Spontaneous resolution was also shown. Furthermore, from the solid circular dichroism (CD) spectral measurements, the relationship between the absolute configuration of the molecules and the CD spectra was determined. A racemization rotational barrier of ca. 27 kcal mol-1 was calculated. Moreover, the pyridylazulene dimer cyclized upon reaction with PdCl2 to form a 3 : 3 complex, in which the biazulene units cyclized to give ratios between the (R)- and (S)-forms of either 2 : 1 or 1 : 2.

Abstract
Because of the unique interaction of radial aromatic blades, propeller-shaped hexaarylbenzenes (HABs) attract much research interest and find various practical applications. By introducing a small point-chiral group at the tip of aromatic blade(s), HAB becomes propeller-chiral to exhibit strong Cotton effects. Because of the dynamic nature of propeller chirality, the chiroptical properties of HAB critically responded to minute changes in the environment. Using a series of chiral HABs with one to six ( R)-1-methylpropyloxy substituent(s) introduced at the blade tip, we elucidated how the smallest chiral auxiliary at the HAB periphery progressively and cooperatively boosts the overall chiroptical properties and also how subtle changes in temperature and solvent structure affect the propeller dynamics and thus the chiroptical responses. The unique features of propeller-chiral HABs further enabled us to switch on/off their circularly polarized luminescence.

Abstract
Hexaarylbenzenes (HABs) have greatly attracted much attention due to their unique propeller-shaped structure and potential application in materials science, such as liquid crystals, molecular capsules/rotors, redox materials, nonlinear optical materials, as well as molecular wires. Less attention has however been paid to their propeller chirality. By introducing small point-chiral group(s) at the periphery of HABs, propeller chirality was effectively induced, provoking strong Cotton effects in the circular dichroism (CD) spectrum. Temperature and solvent polarity manipulate the dynamics of propeller inversion in solution. As such, whizzing toroids become more substantial in polar solvents and at an elevated temperature, where radial aromatic rings (propeller blades) prefer orthogonal alignment against the central benzene ring (C6 core), maximizing toroidal interactions.

Abstract
The C3 -symmetric propeller-chiral compounds (P,P,P)-1 and (M,M,M)-1 with planar π-cores perpendicular to the C3 -axis were synthesized in optically pure states. (P,P,P)-1 possesses two distinguishable propeller-chiral π-faces with rims of different heights named the (P/L)-face and (P/H)-face. Each face is configurationally stable because of the rigid structure of the helicenes contained in the π-core. (P,P,P)-1 formed dimeric aggregates in organic solutions as indicated by the results of (1) H NMR, CD, and UV/Vis spectroscopy and vapor pressure osmometry analyses. The (P/L)/(P/L) interactions were observed in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray analysis, and they were also predominant over the (P/H)/(P/H) and (P/L)/(P/H) interactions in solution, as indicated by the results of (1) H and 2D NMR spectroscopy analyses. The dimerization constant was obtained for a racemic mixture, which showed that the heterochiral (P,P,P)-1/(M,M,M)-1 interactions were much weaker than the homochiral (P,P,P)-1/(P,P,P)-1 interactions. The results indicated that the propeller-chiral (P/L)-face interacts with the (P/L)-face more strongly than with the (P/H)-face, (M/L)-face, and (M/H)-face. The study showed the π-face-selective aggregation and π-face chiral recognition of the configurationally stable propeller-chiral molecules.

Abstract
In this study, we explained the influence of the stepwise protonation of two antihistaminic drugs on their experimental absorption spectra. We demonstrated the capability of the TD-CAM-B3LYP method, combined with a polarizable continuum model, to produce good performance for the calculated spectra. The lowest energy transitions and the molecular orbital plots were analyzed in detail. The calculated UV spectra are proposed as potential alternatives to initialize the well-known MCR-ALS algorithm, especially when the spectra of the pure analytes are not available. Moreover, it can be a useful strategy for planning an experimental methodology oriented to multiway analysis when the drug species exhibit acid-base properties.

Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are still of serious concern as a potential health hazard due to their persistency and bioacumulation. Of 209 possible PCB congeners, with varying number and position of chlorine atom(s), 19 are chiral. These are mostly highly chlorinated and tend to remain longer against the biological decompositions, suffering biological deracemization in the environment. In this work, we have unequivocally determined the absolute configurations of important chiral PCBs 183 and 171, as well as 132, through the combined theoretical and experimental investigations of the chiroptical properties (circular dichroism and optical rotation), which will be valuable in elucidating the mechanism of biological enantiomer enrichment of PCBs in the environment.

Abstract
The absolute stereochemistry of altersolanol A (1) was established by observing a positive exciton couplet in the circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of the C3,C4-O-bis(2-naphthoyl) derivative 10 and by chemical correlations with known compound 8. Before the discussion, the relative stereochemistry of 1 was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The shielding effect at C7'-OMe group by C1-O-benzoylation established the relative stereochemical relationship between the C8-C8' axial bonding and the C1-C4/C1'-C4' polyol moieties of alterporriols E (3), an atropisomer of the C8-C8' dimer of 1. As 3 could be obtained by dimerization of 1 in vitro, the absolute configuration of its central chirality elements (C1-C4) must be identical to those of 1. Spectral comparison between the experimental and theoretical CD spectra supported the above conclusion. Axial stereochemistry of novel C4-O-deoxy dimeric derivatives, alterporriols F (4) and G (5), were also revealed by comparison of their CD spectra to those of 2 and 3.
