Abstract
Advanced spectroscopic techniques have been utilized to study the interaction between the laser dye coumarin 153 (C153) and graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles. GO was synthesized using a modified Hummers' method and characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Raman laser spectroscopy, FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, FESEM, HR-TEM, and XRD techniques. The GO@C153 composite was formed by mixing two aqueous solutions of GO and C153 due to their strong interaction through stacking and hydrophobic interactions. In this case, GO acts as an effective fluorescence quencher for C153 molecules, which undergo H-type aggregation in the presence of GO. The Stern-Volmer equation and time-dependent fluorescence studies were utilized to analyse the mechanism of fluorescence quenching. According to the findings, both static and dynamic quenching processes are responsible for the reduction in fluorescence intensity. The effect of surfactants (both cetyltrimethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate (CTAT) and synthesized N,N'-dihexadecyl-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-N,N'-but-2-ynediyl-di-ammonium chloride (16-4-16)) on the aggregation and photophysical properties of the dye was investigated using surface tensiometry, conductometry, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, steady-state fluorescence measurements, DLS, and time-dependent fluorescence spectroscopy. Surfactants change the microenvironment of the C153 dye, leading to spectrum shifting and a higher quantum yield, which causes a rapid rise in fluorescence intensity in the micellar medium. It has been noted that in a micellar medium rather than in an aqueous one, the luminous intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state of C153 stabilises. Lastly, we investigated the photophysical behavior of the GO-C153-micelle ternary system and discovered that, in the presence of a micellar medium, the quenched and blue-shifted (H-type aggregation) fluorescence peak of C153 (in the presence of GO) began to intensify once more. The main goal of this work is to create an effective and fairly cost powerful fluorescence sensor. Additionally, the ternary system (GO-C153-micelle) analytical idea can be employed to identify the onset of micelle formation. In wastewater treatment analysis, the GO-C153-surfactant ternary system concept can also be used to regenerate the adsorbent (in this case, GO) from dye molecules by allowing the dye molecules to exit the adsorbent and enter the micellar medium.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized quaternary ammonium salt-based gemini surfactants, 2C12(Spacer), with different spacer structures using ethylenediamine derivatives, and investigated their adsorption and aggregation properties by measuring their electrical conductivity, surface tension, fluorescence, and viscosity in conjunction with dynamic light scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering studies to investigate the effect of spacer structures on the properties of the gemini surfactants. The gemini surfactants with spacers containing nitrogen and oxygen atoms were highly soluble in water, whereas those with rigid spacers containing diethylene and triethylene chains exhibited low water solubility. The adsorption and orientation of the gemini surfactants at the air/water interface were significantly affected by the spacer length. Among the synthesized gemini surfactants, the one with the N,N'-dimethylpiperazine spacer showed the highest surface activity. In contrast, the gemini surfactant with the 1-methyl-4-[2-(N,N-dimethylammonio)ethyl]piperazin-1-ium spacer containing an ethylene chain attached to the amino group in the N,N'-dimethylpiperazine spacer (2C12(2/2-N-2)) adsorbed efficiently. However, due to the increased spacer length, this surfactant was unable to orient efficiently at the air/water interface.

Abstract
A simple method to determine Allura Red (AR) in cherry gelatin, chili sauce and strawberry juice by square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry (SWAdV) in the presence of cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) is reported. Using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), Amaranth (AM), Ponceau 4R (P-4R) and AR were oxidized to very close potential values in medium acid pH 3.0 with phosphate buffer solution (PBS), making selective AR detection impossible. Under these conditions AM, P-4R and AR were oxidized at 0.80, 0.77 and 0.81 V, respectively. When small amounts of CPB were added, an AR-CPB aggregate was formed. This change displaced the oxidation almost 0.14 V in the direction of the most positive potential and increased the current almost 50%, while AM and P-4R were oxidized at almost the same potential. Under these conditions, the selective determination of AR in food was possible. Detection limit was 0.032 μmol L-1. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the determination of AR in these foods.

Abstract
Mixed layers of 6-hydroxy-5-[(4-sulfophenyl)azo]-2-naphthalenesulfonate (Sunset Yellow, SSY) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) at the air-water interface were studied using vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) and dynamic surface tension measurements. In the bulk, addition of C16TAB to SSY aqueous solution causes substantial changes in UV/vis absorption spectra, which originate from strong electrostatic interactions between the anionic SSY azo dye with the cationic C16TAB surfactant. These interactions are a driving force for the formation of SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. The latter are found to be highly surface active while free SSY molecules show no surface activity. Dynamic SFG as well as surface tension measurements at low SSY concentrations reveal that free C16TAB surfactants adsorb at the air-water interface on time scales <1 s where they initially form the dominating surface species, but on longer time scales free C16TAB is exchanged by SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. This causes a dramatic reduction of the surface tension to 35 mN/m but also in foam stability. These changes are accompanied by a substantial loss in SFG intensity from O-H stretching bands around 3200 and 3450 cm-1, which we relate to a decrease in surface charging due to adsorption of ion pairs with no or negligible net charges. For SSY/C16TAB molar ratios >0.5, the O-H bands in SFG spectra are reduced to very low intensities and are indicative to electrically neutral SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. This conclusion is corroborated by an analysis of macroscopic foams, which become highly instable in the presence of neutral SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. From an analysis of SFG spectra of air-water interfaces, we show that the electrostatic repulsion forces inside the ubiquitous foam films are reduced and thus remove the major stabilization mechanism within macroscopic foam.

Abstract
The interaction of cresol red (CR) with cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and Triton X-100 (TX-100) was studied in aqueous solutions employing conductometric, tensiometric, and spectroscopic methods. Various micellar and interfacial parameters were calculated in absence and in presence of CR. The interactions suggest the formation of a CR-CPB adduct, an association of CR with the micelle of TX-100 while no adduct is formed between CR and SDS. Appreciably low critical micelle concentration, CMC value of TX-100 compared with those of CPB and SDS in pure water and drastic reduction of CMC of CPB (about one-twelfth of its value in pure water) than SDS and TX-100 in the presence of CR were observed. Higher negative values of Gibbs free energy of micellization, ΔG
m
0, for all the three surfactants indicate that micellization process is spontaneous. The values of maximum surface excess concentration, Γ
max, and minimum area per molecule, A
min, suggest that in the presence of CR, the air-solution interface is closely packed and the orientation of surfactant molecules is almost perpendicular to the surface. UV-visible spectra suggest the formation of ion-pair complex between the dye CR and the monomers of CPB in the pre-micellar region, while above the CMC a breaking up of the ion-pair complex takes place and the dye is solubilized in the micelles of CPB. In the case of SDS the absorption spectra indicate weak interaction between CR and SDS molecules formation of H-bonding, short range dispersive forces, and hydrophobic interactions between CR and TX-100 molecules in the solution.

Abstract
The interactions of an anionic redox-active dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) with novel N-hydroxyethyl-3-alkyloxypyridinium surfactants 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-(tetradecyloxy)pyridinium bromide, [HEC14OPyBr], and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-(hexadecyloxy)pyridinium bromide, [HEC16OPyBr], were investigated in an aqueous solution for the first time with an attempt to obtain comprehensive knowledge of oppositely charged dye-surfactant mixed systems. Different state-of-the-art techniques viz. conductivity, surface tension (ST), UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), potentiometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and (1)H-NMR analysis have been employed. The presence of ARS decreases the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of alkyloxypyridinium surfactants as the ARS monomers behave as aromatic counterions. A combined analysis of the techniques revealed the existence of cation-π, π-π stacking, H-bonding, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions among ARS and alkyloxypyridinium surfactants. A quantitative appraisal of the process of interaction among ARS and alkyloxypyridinium surfactants has been made in terms of various micellar, binding and electrochemical parameters evaluated using ST, UV-visible and voltammetric measurements. Also, the results extracted from (1)H-NMR and voltammetric measurements indicate that the catechol moiety of ARS is involved in the binding mechanism among ARS and alkyloxypyridinium surfactants.

Abstract
Interactions of dianionic dye, eosin yellow with gemini pyridinium surfactants have been investigated using conductivity, UV-visible, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, potentiometry and dynamic light scattering.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of a new distilbene fluorophore, DPDB, belonging to the conjugated polyene family is found to be well modulated with the variation of the microenvironment. Compared to the ground state, the excited-state photophysical properties of the fluorophore have been altered to larger extents with the variation of polarity and the hydrogen-bonding nature of solvents. The change in the fluorescence intensity of DPDB shows a nice correlation with the aggregation behavior of different surfactants which have been utilized for the determination of the CMC of surfactants. The distribution of DPDB is found to be higher in nonionic micelles. On the other hand, DPDB specifically binds the subdomain IB cavity of serum albumin with a stronger binding ability with HSA compared to BSA. DPDB behaves like a bivalent (bifunctional) ligand and forms a complex of 2:1 stoichiometry with serum albumins. Dynamic light scattering and circular dichroism measurements indicate that DPDB favors the association of serum albumin molecules, promoting their preaggregation state. Aggregation is an important phenomenon and is known to be initiated by heat, extreme pH conditions, very high ionic strength, surfactants, metal ions, and so forth. This study explores a new avenue in bringing about association phenomena of serum albumins and points out that the binding of such a bifunctional ligand may also become an important factor in inducing the protein association.

Abstract
The cis-isomer of methyl orange (MO), stabilized in cationic premicelles, has been found to be fluorescence active when excited at wavelength ≤270nm. An intense fluorescence band with maximum at 575nm along with a broad moderate intensity band in the range of 370-530nm and a low intensity band at 361nm have been observed. The major band at 575nm has been attributed to S1→S0 (n-π(*)) fluorescence unlike the other azobenzenes where the S2→S0 (π-π(*)) fluorescence is usually reported. UV-Vis spectral and surface tension study indicate that the dye exists in the trans form in dye-surfactant ionpair (DSIP) at very dilute concentrations of the surfactant. But the polar cis-isomer is stabilized by micellization of the DSIPs as the concentration of the surfactant is increased. The fluorescence and hence the cis-isomer again disappear when normal micelles are formed above the normal CMC of the surfactant. It has been suggested that the symmetry forbidden S1→S0 (n-π(*)) transition of MO becomes allowed due to the formation of the twisted cis-form. TD-DFT calculations have been used as an auxiliary tool to identify the possible structures and electronic transitions responsible for the specific absorption and fluorescence properties of MO observed in presence of premicellar cationic surfactants.

Abstract
The interactions of methylene blue (MB), a redox active dye with surface active biamphiphilic ionic liquids (BAILs): 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate, [C4mim][C12OSO3] and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate [C6mim][C12OSO3] have been investigated in aqueous medium to explore the candidature of surface active ionic liquids (ILs) in the field of dye-surfactant chemistry. Various thermodynamic, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques such as conductivity, steady-state fluorescence, UV-visible absorption, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) have been used to obtain comprehensive information about MB-BAIL interactions. The presence of MB is seen to enhance the critical micellar concentration (cmc) of BAILs. The extent of interaction between the MB and BAILs varies with the concentration as well as the nature of BAILs. Different interactional phenomena such as the formation of ion-pair complexes, dimers, and solubilisation of monomers of MB have been observed in different concentration regimes of BAILs. A quantitative evaluation of the process of interaction between MB and BAILs has been made in terms of various micellar and binding parameters exploiting UV-visible absorption and CV measurements. Comparatively more hydrophobic [C6mim][C12OSO3] interacts strongly with MB as compared to [C4mim][C12OSO3] via hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions.

Abstract
Our recent report on the binding of Cochineal Red A, a food dye, with HSA and BSA at pH 7.4 has revealed that electrostatic forces is the principal cause of interaction. In that study issues relating to complications arising out of modulation of dye binding affinity of BSA with pH had not been explored. Here we have further explored the interaction of Cochineal Red A with BSA in pH range 4.8-7.8. Surprisingly, this system behaves differently in the texture of interaction pattern at two extremes of studied pH range, unlike HSA. Importantly, the charge on the amino acid side chains in the binding pocket is likely to play a significant role.

Abstract
A newly observed UV band of aqueous curcumin, a biologically important molecule, in presence of anionic surfactants, viz., sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), and sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDSN) in buffered aqueous solutions has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The 425 nm absorption band of curcumin disappears and a new UV-band is observed at 355 nm on addition of the surfactants in the submicellar concentration range which is reversed as the surfactant concentration approaches the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The observed spectral absorption, fluorescence intensity and surface tension behavior, under optimal experimental conditions of submicellar concentration ranges of the surfactants in the pH range of 2.00-7.00, indicate that the new band is due to the β-diketo tautomer of curcumin stabilized by interactions between curcumin and the anionic surfactants. The stabilization of the diketo tautomer by submicellar anionic surfactants described here as well as by submicellar cationic surfactant, reported recently, is unique as this is the only such behavior observed in presence of submicellar surfactants of both charge types. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations using ab initio density functional theory combined with time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations.
