Two-Dimensional Crystallization of Hexagonal Bilayer with Moiré Patterns

Directed assembly of photonic crystals through simple substrate patterning

We present molecular dynamics simulations of the epitaxial growth of high quality crystalline films for photonics applications from triblock Janus colloids. With a featureless substrate, the film morphologies were qualitatively similar to previously reported experimental results, with two stacking polymorphs appearing in nearly equal proportion. However, with a patterned substrate deliberately designed to be easy to fabricate by standard photolithography techniques, both the grain size and selectivity towards the photonically active polymorph were greatly improved. We also evaluated the effect of particle flux to find that lower flux led to higher quality crystals, while higher flux led to frustrated films with smaller crystalline domains. Our results suggest that carefully engineered but simple to manufacture patterned substrates could yield self-assembled single crystals of sufficient quality to exhibit a complete photonic bandgap.

Assembly of multi-flavored two-dimensional colloidal crystals

We systematically investigate the assembly of binary multi-flavored colloidal mixtures in two dimensions. In these mixtures all pairwise interactions between species may be tuned independently. This introduces an additional degree of freedom over more traditional binary mixtures with fixed mixing rules, which is anticipated to open new avenues for directed self-assembly. At present, colloidal self-assembly into non-trivial lattices tends to require either high pressures for isotropically interacting particles, or the introduction of directionally anisotropic interactions. Here we demonstrate tunable assembly into a plethora of structures which requires neither of these conditions. We develop a minimal model that defines a three-dimensional phase space containing one dimension for each pairwise interaction, then employ various computational techniques to map out regions of this phase space in which the system self-assembles into these different morphologies. We then present a mean-field model that is capable of reproducing these results for size-symmetric mixtures, which reveals how to target different structures by tuning pairwise interactions, solution stoichiometry, or both. Concerning particle size asymmetry, we find that domains in this model's phase space, corresponding to different morphologies, tend to undergo a continuous "rotation" whose magnitude is proportional to the size asymmetry. Such continuity enables one to estimate the relative stability of different lattices for arbitrary size asymmetries. Owing to its simplicity and accuracy, we expect this model to serve as a valuable design tool for engineering binary colloidal crystals from multi-flavored components.

A smectic dodecagonal quasicrystal

We report a solid smectic phase that exhibits dodecagonal global order. It is composed of axially stacked hexagonally ordered particle layers, and its 12-fold rotational symmetry induced by the 30° rotation of adjacent layers with respect to each other. A quasicrystal was produced in a molecular-dynamics simulation of a single-component system of particles interacting via a spherically-symmetric potential. It was formed as a result of a first-order phase transition from an isotropic liquid state that occurred under constant-density cooling. This finding implies that a similarly structured quasicrystal can possibly be produced by the same class of systems as those forming smectic-B crystals. This quasicrystal can also be expected to arise in a system of spherically-shaped colloidal particles with appropriately tuned potential.

Site-specific colloidal crystal nucleation by template-enhanced particle transport

The monomer surface mobility is the single most important parameter that decides the nucleation density and morphology of islands during thin-film growth. During template-assisted surface growth in particular, low surface mobilities can prevent monomers from reaching target sites and this results in a partial to complete loss of nucleation control. Whereas in atomic systems a broad range of surface mobilities can be readily accessed, for colloids, owing to their large size, this window is substantially narrow and therefore imposes severe restrictions in extending template-assisted growth techniques to steer their self-assembly. Here, we circumvented this fundamental limitation by designing templates with spatially varying feature sizes, in this case moiré patterns, which in the presence of short-range depletion attraction presented surface energy gradients for the diffusing colloids. The templates serve a dual purpose: first, directing the particles to target sites by enhancing their surface mean-free paths and second, dictating the size and symmetry of the growing crystallites. Using optical microscopy, we directly followed the nucleation and growth kinetics of colloidal islands on these surfaces at the single-particle level. We demonstrate nucleation control, with high fidelity, in a regime that has remained unaccessed in theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies on atoms and molecules as well. Our findings pave the way for fabricating nontrivial surface architectures composed of complex colloids and nanoparticles as well.

Molecular dynamics study of colloidal quasicrystals

Colloidal quasicrystals have received increased interest recently due to new insight in exploring their potential for photonic materials as well as for optical devices [Vardeny et al., Nat. Photonics, 2013, 7, 177]. Colloidal quasicrystals in aqueous solutions have been found in systems of micelles with impenetrable cores [Fischer et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A., 2011, 108, 1810]. A simple model potential for micelle-micelle interaction is the step potential, which is infinite for core overlaps and constant for shell overlaps. Dotera et al. performed Monte Carlo simulations of the step potential model and found quasicrystals for specific values of the packing fraction η and the shell-core ratio λ [Dotera et al., Nature, 2014, 506, 208 ]. However, the overlap of real micelles causes repulsive forces, which increase with decreasing core distance. We consider this by introducing a novel model potential with repulsive forces depending on a third parameter α. In a systematic manner we study this more realistic potential with two-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations. For α = 0 the model is similar to the step potential model. For the first time, we provide a comprehensive overview of crystalline, quasicrystalline, and disordered structures as a function of η and λ. Simulations performed with α > 0 show the impact of the repulsive forces. We find that quasicrystalline structures at high densities vanish while new quasicrystalline structures appear at intermediate densities. Our results help to tailor colloidal systems for today's advanced applications in photonics and optical devices.

Fixing colloidal motions at water/air interface with micrometer scale resolution

Fast colloidal motions driven by surface tension gradient are created in a thin water layer. Unlike using solid boundaries to limit the colloidal flow, our work relaxes this condition by directly placing bulk fluid next to an open air environment. When the colloidal flow along the air/water interface is interfered with stationary objects, repetitive semicircular motions, that is, micro eddy, are frequently observed in domains as small as 2 μm. We assign the capillary convection between the liquid next to the air and that from the bulk as the driving force for the observed motions. Relationships among the maximum speed, temperature gradient, and thickness of the liquid layer are experimentally investigated and numerically analyzed. Our results could inspire future designs of micromechanical motors or fluidic mixing in a miniature device.

Near-field scanning optical microscopy enables direct observation of Moiré effects at the nanometer scale

This work reports probing the Moiré effect directly at the nanometer scale via near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). Periodic metal nanostructures of Au and Cu have been produced sequentially using particle lithography, and the overlapped regions serve as Moiré patterns at nanometer scale. The Moiré effect in these regions can be directly visualized from NSOM images, from which periodicity and structural details are accurately determined. In addition, the near-field Moiré effect was found to be very sensitive to structural changes, such as lateral displacement and/or rotations of the two basic arrays with respect to each other. Further, nanostructures of Cu exhibited higher photon transmission than Au from NSOM images. Collectively, NSOM enables direct visualization of the Moiré effect at nanoscale levels, from optical read out, and without enhancements or modification of the structures. The results demonstrate the feasibility to extend applications of the Moiré effect-based techniques to nanometer levels.
