Kinetics and Mechanisms of the Tropospheric Reactions of Menthol, Borneol, Fenchol, Camphor, and Fenchone with Hydroxyl Radicals (OH) and Chlorine Atoms (Cl)

Atmospheric chemistry of CF3CHFCF2OCH3 (HFE-356mec3) and CHF2CHFOCF3 (HFE-236ea1) initiated by OH and Cl and their contribution to global warming

The kinetic study of the gas-phase reactions of hydroxyl (OH) radicals and chlorine (Cl) atoms with CF3CHFCF2OCH3 (HFE-356mec3) and CHF2CHFOCF3 (HFE-236ea1) was performed by the pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence technique and a relative method by using Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy as detection technique. The temperature dependences of the OH-rate coefficients (kOH(T) in cm3s-1) between 263 and 353 K are well described by the following expressions: 9.93 × 10-13exp{-(988 ± 35)/T}for HFE-356mec3 and 4.75 × 10-13exp{-(1285 ± 22)/T} for HFE-236ea1. Under NOx-free conditions, the rate coefficients kCl at 298 K and 1013 mbar (760 Torr) of air were determined to be (2.30 ± 1.08) × 10-13 cm3s-1and (1.19 ± 0.10) × 10-15 cm3s-1, for HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1, respectively. Additionally, the relative kinetic study of the Cl + CH2ClCHCl2 reaction was investigated at 298 K, as it was used as a reference reaction in the kinetic study of the Cl-reaction with HFE-356mec3 and discrepant rate coefficients were found in the literature. The global atmospheric lifetimes were estimated relative to CH3CCl3 at the tropospheric mean temperature (272 K) as 1.4 and 8.6 years for HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1, respectively. These values combined with the radiative efficiencies for HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1 derived from the measured IR absorption cross sections (0.27 and 0.41 W m-2 ppv-1) yield global warming potentials at a 100-yrs time horizon of 143 and 1473, respectively. The contribution of HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1 to global warming of the atmosphere would be large if they become widespread increasing their atmospheric concentration.

Identification of Alkoxy Radicals as Hydrogen Atom Transfer Agents in Ce-Catalyzed C-H Functionalization

The intermediacy of alkoxy radicals in cerium-catalyzed C-H functionalization via H-atom abstraction has been unambiguously confirmed. Catalytically relevant Ce(IV)-alkoxide complexes have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. Operando electron paramagnetic resonance and transient absorption spectroscopy experiments on isolated pentachloro Ce(IV) alkoxides identified alkoxy radicals as the sole heteroatom-centered radical species generated via ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) excitation. Alkoxy-radical-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) has been verified via kinetic analysis, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and reactions under strictly chloride-free conditions. These experimental findings unambiguously establish the critical role of alkoxy radicals in Ce-LMCT catalysis and definitively preclude the involvement of chlorine radical. This study has also reinforced the necessity of a high relative ratio of alcohol vs Ce for the selective alkoxy-radical-mediated HAT, as seemingly trivial changes in the relative ratio of alcohol vs Ce can lead to drastically different mechanistic pathways. Importantly, the previously proposed chlorine radical-alcohol complex, postulated to explain alkoxy-radical-enabled selectivities in this system, has been examined under scrutiny and ruled out by regioselectivity studies, transient absorption experiments, and high-level calculations. Moreover, the peculiar selectivity of alkoxy radical generation in the LMCT homolysis of Ce(IV) heteroleptic complexes has been analyzed and back-electron transfer (BET) may have regulated the efficiency and selectivity for the formation of ligand-centered radicals.

An experimental study of the gas-phase reaction between Cl atoms and trans-2-pentenal: Kinetics, products and SOA formation

The gas-phase reaction of trans-2-pentenal (T2P) with Cl atoms was studied at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. A rate coefficient of (2.56 ± 0.83) × 10^-10 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1 was obtained using the relative rate method and isoprene, cyclohexane and ethanol as reference compounds. The kinetic study was carried out using a 300-L Teflon bag simulation chamber (IMT Lille Douai-France) and a 16-L Pyrex cell (UCLM-Ciudad Real-Spain), both coupled to the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) technique. Gas-phase products and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation were studied at UCLM using a 16-L Pyrex cell and a 264-L quartz simulation chamber coupled to the FTIR and gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. HCl, CO, and propanal were identified as products formed from the studied reaction and quantified by FTIR, the molar yield of the latter being (5.2 ± 0.2)%. Formic acid was identified as a secondary product and was quantified by FTIR with a yield of (6.2 ± 0.4)%. In addition, 2-chlorobutanal and 2-pentenoic acid were identified, but not quantified, by GC-MS as products. The SOA formation was investigated using a fast mobility particle sizer spectrometer. The observed SOA yields reached maximum values of around 7% at high particle mass concentrations. This work provides the first study of the formation of gaseous and particulate products for the reaction of Cl with T2P. A reaction mechanism is suggested to explain the formation of the observed gaseous products. The results are discussed in terms of structure-reactivity relationship, and the atmospheric implications derived from this study are commented as well.

Does the ubiquitous use of essential oil-based products promote indoor air quality? A critical literature review

Essential oils are frequently used as natural fragrances in housecleaning products and air fresheners marketed as green and healthy. However, these substances are volatile and reactive chemical species. This review focuses on the impact of essential oil-based household products on indoor air quality. First, housecleaning products containing essential oils are explored in terms of composition and existing regulations. Specific insight is provided regarding terpenes in fragranced housecleaning products, air fresheners, and pure essential oils. Second, experimental methodologies for terpene monitoring, from sampling to experimental chambers and analytical methods, are addressed, emphasizing the experimental issues in monitoring terpenes in indoor air. Third, the temporal dynamics of terpene emissions reported in the literature are discussed. Despite experimental discrepancies, essential oil-based products are significant sources of terpenes in indoor air, inducing a high exposure of occupants to terpenes. Finally, the fate of terpenes is explored from sorptive and reactive points of view. In addition to terpene deposition on surfaces, indoor oxidants may induce homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions, resulting in secondary pollutants, such as formaldehyde and secondary organic aerosols. Overall, essential oil-based products can negatively impact indoor air quality; therefore, standard protocols and real-scale approaches are needed to explore the indoor physics and chemistry of terpenes, from emissions to reactivity.

Highly Speciated Measurements of Terpenoids Emitted from Laboratory and Mixed-Conifer Forest Prescribed Fires

Wildland fires in the western United States are projected to increase in frequency, duration, and size. Characterized by widespread and diverse conifer forests, burning within this region may lead to significant terpenoid emissions. Terpenoids constitute a major class of highly reactive secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors, with significant structure-dependent variability in reactivity and SOA-formation potential. In this study, highly speciated measurements of terpenoids emitted from laboratory and prescribed fires were achieved using two-dimensional gas chromatography. Nearly 100 terpenoids were measured in smoke samples from 71 fires, with high variability in the dominant compounds. Terpenoid emissions were dependent on plant species and tissues. Canopy/needle-derived emissions dominated in the laboratory fires, whereas woody-tissue-derived emissions dominated in the prescribed fires. Such differences likely have implications for terpenoid emissions from high vs low intensity fires and suggest that canopy-dominant laboratory fires may not accurately represent terpenoid emissions from prescribed fires or wildland fires that burn with low intensity. Predicted SOA formation was sensitive to the diversity of emitted terpenoids when compared to assuming a single terpene surrogate. Given the demonstrated linkages between fuel type, fire terpenoid emissions, and the subsequent implications for plume chemistry, speciated measurements of terpenoids in smoke derived from diverse ecosystems and fire regimes may improve air quality predictions downwind of wildland fires.

Atmospheric Oxidation of Piperazine Initiated by ·Cl: Unexpected High Nitrosamine Yield

Chlorine radicals (·Cl) initiated amine oxidation plays an important role for the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamine in the atmosphere. Piperazine (PZ) is considered as a potential atmospheric pollutant since it is an alternative solvent to monoethanolamine (MEA), a benchmark solvent in a leading CO₂ capture technology. Here, we employed quantum chemical methods and kinetics modeling to investigate ·Cl-initiated atmospheric oxidation of PZ, particularly concerning the potential of PZ to form nitrosamine compared to MEA. Results showed that the ·Cl-initiated PZ reaction exclusively leads to N-center radicals (PZ-N) that mainly react with NO to produce nitrosamine in their further reaction with O₂/NO. Together with the PZ + ·OH reaction, the PZ-N yield from PZ oxidation is still lower than that of the corresponding MEA reactions. However, the nitrosamine yield of PZ is higher than the reported value for MEA when [NO] is <5 ppb, a concentration commonly encountered in a polluted urban atmosphere. The unexpected high nitrosamine yield from PZ compared to MEA results from a more favorable reaction of N-center radicals with NO compared to O₂. These findings show that the yield of N-center radicals cannot directly be used as a metric for the yield of the corresponding carcinogenic nitrosamine.

Response of Rhizobium to Cd exposure: A volatile perspective

The volatile metabolome of Rhizobium sp. strain E20-8 exposed to three concentrations of cadmium (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 μM) was screened using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time of flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToFMS), combined with headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME). Cd exposure induced a global increase in the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) both intra and extracellularly. Peak areas of several linear alkanes, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, terpenic and volatile sulfur compounds, and one ester (ethyl acetate), were especially increased when compared with the control condition (no Cd). These compounds might originate from the metabolization of toxic membrane peroxidation products, the proteolysis of oxidized proteins or the alteration of metabolic pathways, resulting from the oxidative stress imposed by Cd. Several VOCs are related to oxidative damage, but the production of VOCs involved in antioxidant response (menthol, α-pinene, dimethyl sulfide, disulfide and trisulfide, 1-butanol and 2-butanone) and in cell aggregation (2,3-butanedione, 3-methyl-1-butanol and 2-butanone) is also observed. These results bring new information that highlights the role of VOCs on bacteria response to Cd stress, identify a novel set of biomarkers related with metal stress and provide information to be applied in biotechnological and remediation contexts.

Structure of fenchone by broadband rotational spectroscopy

The bicyclic terpenoid fenchone (C10H16O, 1,3,3-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one) has been investigated by chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 2-8 GHz frequency region. The parent species and all heavy atom isotopologues have been observed in their natural abundance. The experimental rotational constants of all isotopic species observed have been determined and used to obtain the substitution (rs) and effective (r0) structures of fenchone. Calculations at the B3LYP, M06-2X, and MP2 levels of theory with different basis sets were carried out to check their performance against experimental results. The structure of fenchone has been compared with those of norbornane (bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane) and the norbornane derivatives camphor (1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one) and camphene (3,3-dimethyl-2-methylenebicyclo[2.2.1]heptane), both with substituents at C2. The structure of fenchone is remarkably similar to those of camphor and camphene. Comparison with camphor allows identification of changes in ∠CCC angles due to the different position of the methyl groups. All norbornane derivatives display similar structural changes with respect to norbornane. These changes mainly affect the bond lengths and angles of the six-membered rings, indicating that the substituent at C2 drives structural adjustments to minimise ring strain after its introduction.

Atmospheric fate of hydrofluoroolefins, CxF2x+1CHCH2 (x = 1,2,3,4 and 6): Kinetics with Cl atoms and products

Rate coefficients for the gas-phase reactions of C_xF_2x+1CHCH₂ (x = 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) with Cl atoms were determined at (298 ± 2) K and (710 ± 5) Torr of air using a relative rate technique. Two experimental setups with simulation chambers were employed with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) as detection techniques. The Cl-rate coefficients obtained were (in 10^-10 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1): (0.85 ± 0.11) for CF₃CHCH₂, (1.11 ± 0.08) for C₂F₅CHCH₂, (1.12 ± 0.18) for C₃F₇CHCH₂, (0.97 ± 0.09) for C₄F₉CHCH₂, and (0.99 ± 0.08) for C₆F₁₃CHCH₂. Additionally, the gas-phase products were identified and quantified, when possible, by FTIR spectroscopy or GC-MS. The main reaction product was reported to be C_xF_2x+1C(O)CH₂Cl. The fluorinated species, C_xF_2x+1CHO and C_xF_2x+1C(O)CH₂Cl, were identified. CF₃C(O)CH₂Cl and CF₃CHO were found to be formed with molar yield of (69 ± 5)% and (9 ± 1)%, respectively. The global lifetime of the investigated C_xF_2x+1CHCH₂ due to their Cl-reaction is more than 100 days so this route does not compete with the removal by OH radicals. This lifetime is long enough for C_xF_2x+1CHCH₂ to be transported to remote areas where they can be degraded. However, at a local scale, in marine regions at dawn the removal of C_xF_2x+1CHCH₂ is expected to occur in ca. 1 day. The atmospheric degradation of these hydrofluoroolefins by Cl atoms is not expected to be a source of bioaccumulative perfluorinated carboxylic acids, C_xF_2x+1C(O)OH. Additionally, the UV absorption cross sections of CF₃C(O)CH₂Cl were determined together with the rate coefficient of the OH reaction by an absolute kinetic method at room temperature.

Atmospheric reactions of methylcyclohexanes with Cl atoms and OH radicals: determination of rate coefficients and degradation products

As the result of biogenic and anthropogenic activities, large quantities of chemical compounds are emitted into the troposphere. Alkanes, in general, and cycloalkanes are an important chemical class of hydrocarbons found in diesel, jet and gasoline, vehicle exhaust emissions, and ambient air in urban areas. In general, the primary atmospheric fate of organic compounds in the gas phase is the reaction with hydroxyl radicals (OH). The oxidation by Cl atoms has gained importance in the study of atmospheric reactions because they may exert some influence in the boundary layer, particularly in marine and coastal environments, and in the Arctic troposphere. The aim of this paper is to study of the atmospheric reactivity of methylcylohexanes with Cl atoms and OH radicals under atmospheric conditions (in air at room temperature and pressure). Relative kinetic techniques have been used to determine the rate coefficients for the reaction of Cl atoms and OH radicals with methylcyclohexane, cis-1,4-dimethylcyclohexane, trans-1,4-dimethylcyclohexane, and 1,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane at 298 ± 2 K and 720 ± 5 Torr of air by Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in two atmospheric simulation chambers. The products formed in the reaction under atmospheric conditions were investigated using a 200-L Teflon bag and employing the technique of solid-phase microextraction coupled to a GC-MS. The rate coefficients obtained for the reaction of Cl atoms with the studied compounds are the following ones (in units of 10(-10) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)): (3.11 ± 0.16), (2.89 ± 0.16), (2.89 ± 0.26), and (2.61 ± 0.42), respectively. For the reactions with OH radicals the determined rate coefficients are (in units of 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)): (1.18 ± 0.12), (1.49 ± 0.16), (1.41 ± 0.15), and (1.77 ± 0.23), respectively. The reported error is twice the standard deviation. A detailed mechanism for ring-retaining product channels is proposed to justify the observed reaction products. The global tropospheric lifetimes estimated from the reported OH- and Cl-rate coefficients show that the main removal path for the investigated methylcyclohexanes is the reaction with OH radicals. But in marine environments, after sunrise, Cl reactions become more important in the tropospheric degradation. Thus, the estimated lifetimes range from 16 to 24 h for the reactions of the OH radical (calculated with [OH] = 10(6) atoms cm(-3)) and around 7-8 h in the reactions with Cl atoms in marine environments (calculated with [Cl] = 1.3 × 10(5) atoms cm(-3)). The reaction of Cl atoms and OH radicals and methylcylohexanes can proceed by H abstraction from the different positions.
