Abstract
Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in the complexes between aldehydes and hydrogen chalcogenides, XCHO...nH2Z with X = H, F, Cl, Br, and CH3, Z = O, S, Se, and Te, and n = 1,2, were investigated using high-level ab initio calculations. The Csp2-H...O H-bonds are found to be about twice as strong as the Csp2-H...S/Se/Te counterparts. Remarkably, the S/Se/Te-H...S/Se/Te H-bonds are 4.5 times as weak as the O-H...O ones. The addition of the second H2Z molecule into binary systems induces stronger complexes and causes a positive cooperative effect in ternary complexes. The blue shift of Csp2-H stretching frequency involving the Csp2-H...Z H-bond sharply increases when replacing one H atom in HCHO by a CH3 group. In contrast, when one H atom in HCHO is substituted with a halogen, the magnitude of blue-shifting of the Csp2-H...Z H-bond becomes smaller. The largest blue shift up to 92 cm-1 of Csp2-H stretching frequency in Csp2-H...O H-bond in CH3CHO...2H2O has rarely been observed and is much greater than that in the cases of the Csp2-H...S/Se/Te ones. The Csp2-H blue shift of Csp2-H...Z bonds in the halogenated aldehydes is converted into a red shift when H2O is replaced by a heavier analogue, such as H2S, H2Se, or H2Te. The stability and classification of nonconventional H-bonds including Csp2-H...Se/Te, Te-H...Te, and Se/Te-H...O have been established for the first time.

Abstract
Hydrogen bond can be regarded as an interaction between a base and a proton covalently bound to another base. In this context the strength of hydrogen bond scales with the proton affinity of the acceptor base and the pKa of the donor, i.e., it follows the acid-base formalism. This has been amply demonstrated in conventional hydrogen bonds. Is this also true for the unconventional hydrogen bonds involving lesser electronegative elements such as sulfur atom? In our previous work, we had established that the strength of O-H···S hydrogen bonding (HB) interaction scales with the proton affinity (PA) of the acceptor. In this work, we have investigated the other counterpart, i.e., the H-bonding interaction between the photoacids with different pKa values with a common base such as the H2O and H2S. The 1:1 complexes of five para substituted phenols p-aminophenol, p-cresol, p-fluorophenol, p-chlorophenol, and p-cyanophenol with H2O and H2S were investigated experimentally and computationally. The investigations were also extended to the excited states. The experimental observations of the spectral shifts in the O-H stretching frequency and the S1-S0 band origins were correlated with the pKa of the donors. Ab initio calculations at the MP2 and various dispersion corrected density functional levels of theory were performed to compute the dissociation energy (D0) of the complexes. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), noncovalent interaction (NCI) method, natural bonding orbital (NBO) analysis, and natural decomposition analysis (NEDA) were carried out for further characterization of HB interaction. The O-H stretching frequency red shifts and the dissociation energies were found to be lower for the O-H···S hydrogen bonded systems compared to those for the O-H···O H-bound systems. Despite being dominated by the dispersion interaction the O-H···S interaction in the H2S complexes also conformed to the acid-base formalism, i.e., the D0 and the O-H red shift scaled with the pKa of the donor, similar to that observed in the O-H···O interaction. However, the two classes of H-bonds follow different correlations. In addition we also discuss the nuances associated with the similarity and differences in the hydrogen bonding properties of the two classes in the ground electronic state as well as in the excited state.

Abstract
The first systematic theoretical study of the nature of intermolecular bonding of dimethylselenide as donor and IIIA group element halides as acceptors was made with the help of the approach of Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules. Density Functional Theory with "old" Sapporo triple-ζ basis sets was used to calculate geometry, thermodynamics, and wave function of Me2Se···AX3 complexes. The analysis of the electron density distribution and the Laplacian of the electron density allowed us to reveal and explain the tendencies in the influence of the central atom (A = B, Al, Ga, In) and halogen (X = F, Cl, Br, I) on the nature of Se···A bonding. Significant changes in properties of the selenium lone pair upon complexation were described by means of the analysis of the Laplacian of the charge density. Charge transfer characteristics and the contributions to it from electron localization and delocalization were analyzed in terms of localization and delocalization indexes. Common features of the complexation and differences in the nature of bonding were revealed. Performed analysis evidenced that gallium and indium halide complexes can be attributed to charge transfer-driven complexes; aluminum halides complexes seem to be mainly of an electrostatic nature. The nature of bonding in different boron halides essentially varies; these complexes are stabilized mainly by covalent Se···B interaction. In all the complexes under study covalence of the Se···A interaction is rather high.
