Hygroscopic Particle Behavior Studied by Interdigitated Array Microelectrode Impedance Sensors

Hydrogen Insertion into Complex-Phase High-Strength Steel during Atmospheric Corrosion at Low Relative Humidity

Atmospheric corrosion is one of the major sources of hydrogen in a high-strength-steel product in service. Even low concentrations of absorbed hydrogen can cause a hydrogen embrittlement-related material degradation. The extent of atmospheric corrosion and thus the related hydrogen entry is highly dependent on the environmental parameters, such as the relative humidity. The present work focused on the hydrogen entry at low relative humidity, where atmospheric corrosion rates are expected to be low. Hydrogen insertion and distribution in CP1000 steel induced by corrosion under dried and rewetted single droplets of aqueous NaCl and MgCl2 solution were studied using the Scanning Kelvin Probe (SKP) and the resulting amounts of diffusible hydrogen were analyzed using thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDMS). Corrosion product analyses were carried out with SEM/EDX, XRD, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results revealed the strong impact of salt type and concentration on the hydrogen entry into steel. The hygroscopic effect of MgCl2 and the formed corrosion products were responsible for the prolonged insertion of hydrogen into the steel even at very low levels of relative humidity.

Hygroscopic properties of sodium and potassium salts as related to saline mineral dusts and sea salt aerosols

Mineral dust, soil, and sea salt aerosols are among the most abundant primary inorganic aerosols in the atmosphere, and their hygroscopicity affects the hydrological cycle and global climate. We investigated the hygroscopic behaviors of six Na- and K-containing salts commonly found in those primary organic aerosols. Their hygroscopic growths as a function of relative humidity (RH) agree well with thermodynamic model prediction. Temperature dependence of deliquescence RH (DRH) values for five of those salts was also investigated, which are comparable to those in literature within 1%-2% RH, most showing negative dependence on temperature. Hygroscopic growth curves of real-world soil and sea salt samples were also measured. The hygroscopic growths of two more-hydroscopic saline soil samples and of sea salt can be predicted by the thermodynamic model based on the measured water-soluble ionic composition. The substantial amounts of water-soluble ions, including Na⁺ and K⁺, in saline soil samples imply that even nascent saline soil samples are quite hygroscopic at high-RH (>80%) conditions. For three less-hygroscopic dust samples, however, measurements showed higher water uptake ability than that predicted by the thermodynamic model. The small amount of water taken up by less-hygroscopic dust samples suggests that dust particles might contain thin layers of water even to very low RH. The results of this study provide a comprehensive characterization of the hygroscopicity of Na- and K-containing salts as related to their roles in the hygroscopic behaviors of saline mineral dusts and sea salt aerosols.

Measuring Aerosol Phase Changes and Hygroscopicity with a Microresonator Mass Sensor

The interaction between atmospheric aerosol particles and water vapor influences aerosol size, phase, and composition, parameters which critically influence their impacts in the atmosphere. Methods to accurately measure aerosol water uptake for a wide range of particle types are therefore merited. We present here a new method for characterizing aerosol hygroscopicity, an impaction stage containing a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) microresonator. We find that deliquescence and efflorescence relative humidities (RHs) of sodium chloride and ammonium sulfate are easily diagnosed via changes in resonant frequency and peak sharpness. These agree well with literature values and thermodynamic models. Furthermore, we demonstrate that, unlike other resonator-based techniques, full hygroscopic growth curves can be derived, including for an inorganic-organic mixture (sodium chloride and malonic acid) which remains liquid at all RHs. The response of the microresonator frequency to temperature and particle mechanical properties and the resulting limitations when measuring hygroscopicity are discussed. MEMS resonators show great potential as miniaturized ambient aerosol mass monitors, and future work will consider the applicability of our approach to complex ambient samples. The technique also offers an alternative to established methods for accurate thermodynamic measurements in the laboratory.
