Beyond the “Coffee Ring”: Re-entrant Ordering in an Evaporation-Driven Self-Assembly in a Colloidal Suspension on a Substrate

Versatile Deposition of Complex Colloidal Assemblies from the Evaporation of Hanging Drops

Existing strategies designed to produce ordered arrangements of colloidal particles on solid supports are of great interest for their wide range of applications, from colloidal lithography, plasmonic and biomimetic surfaces to tags for anti-counterfeiting, but they all share various degrees of complexity hampering their facile implementation. Here, a drastically simplified methodology is presented to achieve ordered particle deposition, consisting in adding micromolar amounts of cationic surfactant to a colloidal suspension drop and let it evaporate in an upside-down configuration. Confinement at the air/water interface enables particle assembly into monolayers, which are then transferred on the substrate producing highly ordered structures displaying vivid, orientation-dependent structural colors. The method is compatible with many particle types and substrates, while controlling system parameters allows tuning the deposit size and morphology, from monocrystals to polycrystalline disks and "irises", from single-component to crystal alloys with Moiré patterns, demonstrating its practicality for a variety of processes.

Tailoring Disorder and Quality of Photonic Glass Templates for Structural Coloration by Particle Charge Interactions

To obtain high-quality homogeneous photonic glass-based structural color films over large areas, it is essential to precisely control the degree of disorder of the spherical particles used and reduce the crack density within the films as much as possible. To tailor the disorder and quality of photonic glasses, a heteroaggregation-based process was developed by employing two oppositely charged equal-sized polystyrene (PS) particle types. The influence of the particle size ratio on the extent of heteroaggregation in the suspension mixes is investigated and correlated with both the morphology and the resultant optical properties of the films. The results show that the oppositely charged particle size ratio within the mix greatly influences the assembled structure in the films, affecting their roughness, crack density, and the coffee-ring formation. To better differentiate the morphology of the films, scanning electron microscopy images of the microstructures were classified by a supervised training of a deep convolutional neural network model to find distinctions that are inaccessible by conventional image analysis methods. Selected compositions were then infiltrated with TiO₂ via atomic layer deposition, and after removal of the PS spheres, surface-templated inverse photonic glasses were obtained. Different color impressions and optical properties were obtained depending on the heteroaggregation level and thus the quality of the resultant films. The best results regarding the stability of the films and suppression of coffee-ring formation are obtained with a 35 wt % positively charged over negatively charged particle mix, which yielded enhanced structural coloration associated with improved film quality, tailored by the heteroaggregation fabrication process.

Approaches to self-assembly of colloidal monolayers: A guide for nanotechnologists

Self-assembly of quasi-spherical colloidal particles in two-dimensional (2D) arrangements is essential for a wide range of applications from optoelectronics to surface engineering, from chemical and biological sensing to light harvesting and environmental remediation. Several self-assembly approaches have flourished throughout the years, with specific features in terms of complexity of the implementation, sensitivity to process parameters, characteristics of the final colloidal assembly. Selecting the proper method for a given application amidst the vast literature in this field can be a challenging task. In this review, we present an extensive classification and comparison of the different techniques adopted for 2D self-assembly in order to provide useful guidelines for scientists approaching this field. After an overview of the main applications of 2D colloidal assemblies, we describe the main mechanisms underlying their formation and introduce the mathematical tools commonly used to analyse their final morphology. Subsequently, we examine in detail each class of self-assembly techniques, with an explanation of the physical processes intervening in crystallization and a thorough investigation of the technical peculiarities of the different practical implementations. We point out the specific characteristics of the set-ups and apparatuses developed for self-assembly in terms of complexity, requirements, reproducibility, robustness, sensitivity to process parameters and morphology of the final colloidal pattern. Such an analysis will help the reader to individuate more easily the approach more suitable for a given application and will draw the attention towards the importance of the details of each implementation for the final results.

Self-Assembly of Single-Sized and Binary Colloidal Particles at Air/Water Interface by Surface Confinement and Water Discharge

We present an innovative apparatus allowing self-assembly at air/water interface in a smooth and reproducible way. The combination of water discharge and surface confinement of the area over which self-assembly takes place allows transfer of the assembled monolayer without any risk of damage to the colloidal crystal. As we demonstrate, the designed approach offers remarkable advantages in terms of cost and robustness compared to state-of-the art methods and is suitable for the fabrication of highly ordered monolayers even for more challenging assembly experiments such as transfer on rough substrates or assembly of binary colloids. Hence, our apparatus represents a significant headway toward high scale production of large area colloidal crystals. For the binary colloid assembly experiments, we also report the first experimental demonstration of a morphology based on the alternation of three and four small particles in the interstices between large particles.

A New Strategy of Lithography Based on Phase Separation of Polymer Blends

Herein, we propose a new strategy of maskless lithographic approach to fabricate micro/nano-porous structures by phase separation of polystyrene (PS)/Polyethylene glycol (PEG) immiscible polymer blend. Its simple process only involves a spin coating of polymer blend followed by a development with deionized water rinse to remove PEG moiety, which provides an extremely facile, low-cost, easily accessible nanofabrication method to obtain the porous structures with wafer-scale. By controlling the weight ratio of PS/PEG polymer blend, its concentration and the spin-coating speed, the structural parameters of the porous nanostructure could be effectively tuned. These micro/nano porous structures could be converted into versatile functional nanostructures in combination with follow-up conventional chemical and physical nanofabrication techniques. As demonstrations of perceived potential applications using our developed phase separation lithography, we fabricate wafer-scale pure dielectric (silicon)-based two-dimensional nanostructures with high broadband absorption on silicon wafers due to their great light trapping ability, which could be expected for promising applications in the fields of photovoltaic devices and thermal emitters with very good performances, and Ag nanodot arrays which possess a surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement factor up to 1.64 × 10⁸ with high uniformity across over an entire wafer.

Analysis of the effects of evaporative cooling on the evaporation of liquid droplets using a combined field approach

During liquid evaporation, the equations for the vapor concentration in the atmosphere and for the temperature in the liquid are coupled and must be solved in an iterative manner. In the present paper, a combined field approach which unifies the coupled fields into one single hybrid field and thus makes the iteration unnecessary is proposed. By using this approach, the influences of the evaporative cooling on the evaporation of pinned sessile droplets are investigated, and its predictions are found in good agreement with the previous theoretical and experimental results. A dimensionless number Ec which can evaluate the strength of the evaporative cooling is then introduced, and the results show that both the evaporation flux along the droplet surface and the total evaporation rate of the droplet decrease as the evaporative cooling number Ec increases. For drying droplets, there exists a critical value Ec_Crit below which the evaporative cooling effect can be neglected and above which the significance of the effect increases dramatically. The present work may also have more general applications to coupled field problems in which all the fields have the same governing equation.
