Plasmon Mapping in Au@Ag Nanocube Assemblies

Nanobionics-Driven Synthesis of Molybdenum Oxide Nanosheets with Tunable Plasmonic Resonances in Visible Light Regions

Nanobionics-driven synthesis offers a process of designing and synthesizing functional materials on a nanoscale based on the structures and functions of biological systems. An approach such as this is environmentally friendly and sustainable, providing a viable option for synthesizing functional nanomaterials for catalysis and nanoelectronic components. In this work, we present a facile and green nanobionics approach to synthesize plasmonic H_xMoO₃ by interacting chloroplasts extracted from spinach with two-dimensional (2D) MoO₃ nanoflakes. The generated plasmon resonances can be modulated in the visible wavelength ranges, and the efficiency to form the plasmonic materials is enhanced by 90% within 45 min of light excitation compared to reactions without chloroplast involvement. Such a characteristic is ascribed to the interfacial carrier dynamics between the two entities in the reactions, in which highly doped metal oxides with quasi-metallic properties can be formed to generate optical absorptions in the visible light region. The green synthesized plasmonic materials show high photocatalytic activities without the coupling of semiconductors, providing a promising nanoelectronics unit, based on the nanobionics-driven synthesized plasmonic materials.

Multimode Electron Tomography Sheds Light on Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of Complex Metal-Based Nanoparticles

Electron tomography has become a cornerstone technique for the visualization of nanoparticle morphology in three dimensions. However, to obtain in-depth information about a nanoparticle beyond surface faceting and morphology, different electron microscopy signals must be combined. The most notable examples of these combined signals include annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) with different collection angles and the combination of ADF-STEM with energy-dispersive X-ray or electron energy loss spectroscopies. Here, the experimental and computational development of various multimode tomography techniques in connection to the fundamental materials science challenges that multimode tomography has been instrumental to overcoming are summarized. Although the techniques can be applied to a wide variety of compositions, the study is restricted to metal and metal oxide nanoparticles for the sake of simplicity. Current challenges and future directions of multimode tomography are additionally discussed.

Uncovering the Evolution of Low-Energy Plasmons in Nanopatterned Aluminum Plasmonics on Graphene

We report adjusting the charge-transfer-plasmon (CTP) resonances of aluminum (Al) bowties on suspended monolayer graphene via controlled nanofabrication and focused electron-beam irradiation. CTP resonances of bowties with a conductive junction blue-shift with an increase in junction width, whereas their 3λ/2 and λ resonances barely red-shift. These plasmon modes are derived and confirmed by an LC circuit model and electromagnetic simulations performed with boundary-element and frequency-domain methods. A monotonic decay of the CTP lifetime is observed, while the junction width is extended. Instead, the lifetimes of 3λ/2 and λ resonances are nearly independent of junction width. When the junction is shrunk by electron-beam irradiation, all antenna resonances red-shift. Having created an electron-beam-induced sub 5 nm gap in bowties, we monitor the unambiguous transition of a CTP into a bonding-type gap mode, which is highly sensitive to the separation distance. Meanwhile, the 3λ/2 and λ resonances evolve into dipolar bright and dipolar dark modes.

Surface Plasmon Tunability of Core-Shell Au@Mo6 Nanoparticles by Shell Thickness Modification

Plasmon resonances of noble metal nanoparticles are used to enhance light-matter interactions in the nanoworld. The nanoparticles' optical response depends strongly on the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding medium. We show that the plasmon resonance energy of core-shell Au@Mo₆ nanoparticles can be tuned from 2.4 to 1.6 eV by varying the thickness of their Mo₆ cluster shells between zero and 70 nm, when the core diameter is fixed at 100 nm. We probe their plasmonic response by performing nanometer-resolution plasmon mapping on individual nanoparticles, using electron energy-loss spectroscopy inside a transmission electron microscope. Our experimental results are corroborated by numerical simulations performed using boundary element methods. The simulations predict a similar dependency for the extinction energy, showing that this effect could also be observed by light-optical experiments outside the electron microscope, although limited by the size distribution of the nanoparticles in solution and the substantial scattering effects.

Strain-Induced Modulation of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance in Ultrathin Hexagonal Gold Nanoplates

Anisotropic gold nanoplates (NPLs) have raised the interesting possibility that their reduced geometrical symmetry allows fine tuning of their optical properties associated with the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). Recent developments have greatly improved LSPR tunability by utilizing the spatial distribution of LSPR modes. However, the nanoscale interplay between defect-induced mechanical strain and the spatial variation of LSPR modes remains poorly understood. In this work, the combination of high spatial- and spectral-resolution mapping of LSPR modes and nanoscale strain mapping using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy are applied to investigate the nanoscale distribution of LSPR modes in an ultrathin single hexagonal gold NPL and the effect of defect-induced strains on its LSPR properties. The electron energy-loss spectral maps reveal four distinct LSPR components and intensity distributions of all LSPR modes in a hexagonal gold NPL. Furthermore, the strain maps provide experimental evidence that the tensile strain field induced by a Z-shaped faulted dipole is responsible for the asymmetric distribution of LSPR intensity in a hexagonal gold NPL.

Recent Advances in the Design of Plasmonic Au/TiO2 Nanostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Plasmonic nanostructures have played a key role in extending the activity of photocatalysts to the visible light spectrum, preventing the electron-hole combination and providing with hot electrons to the photocatalysts, a crucial step towards efficient broadband photocatalysis. One plasmonic photocatalyst, Au/TiO2, is of a particular interest because it combines chemical stability, suitable electronic structure, and photoactivity for a wide range of catalytic reactions such as water splitting. In this review, we describe key mechanisms involving plasmonics to enhance photocatalytic properties leading to efficient water splitting such as production and transport of hot electrons through advanced analytical techniques used to probe the photoactivity of plasmonics in engineered Au/TiO2 devices. This work also discusses the emerging strategies to better design plasmonic photocatalysts and understand the underlying mechanisms behind the enhanced photoactivity of plasmon-assisted catalysts.

Site-Specific Wetting of Iron Nanocubes by Gold Atoms in Gas-Phase Synthesis

A key challenge in nanotechnology is the rational design of multicomponent materials that beat the properties of their elemental counterparts. At the same time, when considering the material composition of such hybrid nanostructures and the fabrication process to obtain them, one should favor the use of nontoxic, abundant elements in view of the limited availability of critical metals and sustainability. Cluster beam deposition offers a solvent- and, therefore, effluent-free physical synthesis method to achieve nanomaterials with tailored characteristics. However, the simultaneous control of size, shape, and elemental distribution within a single nanoparticle in a small-size regime (sub-10 nm) is still a major challenge, equally limiting physical and chemical approaches. Here, a single-step nanoparticle fabrication method based on magnetron-sputtering inert-gas condensation is reported, which relies on selective wetting of specific surface sites on precondensed iron nanocubes by gold atoms. Using a newly developed Fe-Au interatomic potential, the growth mechanism is decomposed into a multistage model implemented in a molecular dynamics simulation framework. The importance of growth kinetics is emphasized through differences between structures obtained either experimentally or computationally, and thermodynamically favorable configurations determined via global optimization techniques. These results provide a roadmap for engineering complex nanoalloys toward targeted applications.

Bulk scale fabrication of sodium tungsten bronze nanoparticles for applications in plasmonics

In order to advance plasmon-based technologies, new materials with low damping losses and high chemical stability are needed. In this letter, we report the bulk scale fabrication of sodium tungsten bronze (Na _x WO₃) nanoparticles with high Na content (x ≤ 0.83) using a furnace-assisted method. Phase purity and morphology is confirmed with x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Plasmon responses are characterized using spectrophotometry and spatially-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope. Experimental EELS maps of individual nanoparticles show the excitation of distinct plasmon resonances at visible and near-infrared (NIR) frequencies, and these observations are supported by boundary element method simulations. Na _x WO₃ is a promising alternative material for plasmonics due to its strong plasmon resonances when compared to Au, its simple nanofabrication, and low cost. In particular, their high NIR extinction makes these materials ideal for applications in solar control window coatings or plasmonic photocatalysis.

Modeling of the surface plasmon resonance tunability of silver/gold core-shell nanostructures

Tunable plasmonic noble metal nanoparticles are indispensable for chemical sensors and optical near field enhancement applications. Laser wavelengths within the absorption spectrum of the nanoparticle and Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances (LSPR) in the visible and near infrared range are the key points to be met for the successful utilization in the field of aforementioned high sensitivity sensors. This way, Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has been pushed to the sensitivity level of single molecule. The tunability, i.e. the modulation of the surface plasmon resonance wavelength as a function of the ambient refractive index is one of the important criteria to be understood clearly. Among various noble metals, gold and silver nanoparticles have the strongest surface enhancement factors for the Raman signal and their tunability for many practical applications has been experimentally demonstrated. We present a comprehensive numerical investigation by means of a finite element analysis on Ag/Au core-shell nanospheres including agglomerated and non-agglomerated dimers. Tunability as a function of shell thickness, total nanosphere radius and fraction of overlap between the dimer is discussed. Our studies show that tunability is considerably affected by the nanosphere radius rather than the shell thickness. These findings may be helpful in the synthesis of nanoplasmonic structures, especially related to an optimized use of gold as the shell material for the targeted application.

Investigation of plasmon resonance in metal/dielectric nanocavities for high-efficiency photocatalytic device

Photocatalytic nanostructures loaded with metallic nanoparticles are being considered as a potential candidate for designing efficient water splitting devices. Here, we aim to unveil the plasmonic behavior of a device made of Au-TiO₂ nanostructures through in-depth investigations combining electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and cathodoluminescence (CL). The experiments confirm the existence of Au bulk plasmon excitation, intrinsic interband transitions, and plasmon losses over a wide range of energies (0.6-2.4 eV). Depending on the size and the shape of the obtained nanostructures, such as fishing hook (FH), asymmetric nanorod (AR), and a/symmetric nanoparticles, in our devices, the dephasing times and the quality factors of the modes vary. Finite difference time domain simulations were then carried out on FH and AR structures. These simulations indicate good agreement between the electric field enhancement and the obtained plasmon excitation as observed in EELS. Moreover, the plasmonic activity obtained by CL and EELS was correlated with the photocurrent measurements recorded with the device, which confirmed that the localized plasmons in Au generate hot electrons and enhance the photoresponse of the device. This study confirms the functionality of the metal dielectric photocatalyst device over a wide range of wavelengths ranging from UV to near IR.

Combination of microfluidic high-throughput production and parameter screening for efficient shaping of gold nanocubes using Dean-flow mixing

Metal nanoparticles and their special optical properties, the so-called localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), facilitate many applications in various fields. Due to the strong dependency of the LSPR on particle geometry, their synthesis is a challenging and time-consuming procedure especially for non-spherical shapes. In contrast, micromixers offer new experimental approaches and therefore enable the simplification of several processes. By using a zigzag micromixer (Dean-Flow-Mixer, DFM) that induces Dean-flow secondary flow patterns, we theoretically and experimentally show the mixing efficiency. Thus, we highlight the advantages of using it in the multistep synthesis of Au nanoparticles. Based on a narrow size distribution of Au nanocubes and an increased yield in combination with higher reproducibility, we depict the need for and advantage of the DFM to control the incubation times during the growth process. We further show that, by using the DFM, easy and very fast Au nanocube edge length tuning (53 nm, 58 nm, 70 nm and 75 nm) is possible by simultaneously reducing the consumption of the materials by up to 95%. We finally demonstrate the versatile abilities by using the DFM for parameter screening on examples of different halides and accessible bromide in the growth solutions. Therefore, we highlight the optimal concentration for the different growth regimes and the influences on the Au nanoparticle morphology (spheres, cubes and rods) and their defined shaping.

Nanoscale topographical control of capillary assembly of nanoparticles

Predetermined and selective placement of nanoparticles onto large-area substrates with nanometre-scale precision is essential to harness the unique properties of nanoparticle assemblies, in particular for functional optical and electro-optical nanodevices. Unfortunately, such high spatial organization is currently beyond the reach of top-down nanofabrication techniques alone. Here, we demonstrate that topographic features comprising lithographed funnelled traps and auxiliary sidewalls on a solid substrate can deterministically direct the capillary assembly of Au nanorods to attain simultaneous control of position, orientation and interparticle distance at the nanometre level. We report up to 100% assembly yield over centimetre-scale substrates. We achieve this by optimizing the three sequential stages of capillary nanoparticle assembly: insertion of nanorods into the traps, resilience against the receding suspension front and drying of the residual solvent. Finally, using electron energy-loss spectroscopy we characterize the spectral response and near-field properties of spatially programmable Au nanorod dimers, highlighting the opportunities for precise tunability of the plasmonic modes in larger assemblies.

Quantum effects in the plasmon response of bimetallic core-shell nanostructures

We report a quantum mechanical study of the plasmonic response of bimetallic spherical core/shell nanoparticles. The systems comprise up to 10⁴ electrons and their optical response is addressed with Time Dependent Density Functional Theory calculations. These quantum results are compared with classical electromagnetic calculations for core/shell systems formed by Al/Na, Al/Au and Ag/Na, as representative examples of bimetallic systems. We show that for shell widths in the nanometer range, the system cannot be described as a simple stack of two metals. The finite size effect and the transition layer formed between the core and the shell strongly modify the optical properties of the compound nanoparticle. In particular this configuration leads to a frequency shift of the plasmon resonance with shell character and an increased plasmon decay into electron-hole pairs which eventually quenches this resonance for very thin shells. This effect is difficult to capture with a classical theory even upon adjustment of the parameters of a combination of metallic dielectric functions.

The alloying effect and AgCl-directing growth for synthesizing a trimetallic nanoring with improved SERS

We report the synthesis of high quality trimetallic Au/Ag/Pt nanorings (TAAPNs) by using Au/Ag alloy decahedra (AAAD) as templates. The alloying effect and AgCl-directing growth have been investigated in detail during the formation of TAAPN. It was found that the doping of Ag in AAAD changes the surrounding environment of Au atoms and decreases the oxidization reduction potential (ORP) of [AuCl(2)](-)/Au because of the alloying effect, resulting in the dissolved O(2) molecules that serve as an effective etchant for oxidizing Au to Au(I). Ascorbic acid (AA) and chloroplatinic acid (H(2)PtCl(6)) are weak acids which can accelerate the etching by increasing the concentration of H(+). The AgCl selectively absorbs on {100} of the decahedra and induces the preferential deposition of H(2)PtCl(6) here via their complexing interaction. AA reduces Pt(IV) and Ag(I) to atoms which grow on {100} facets. The formed Pt/Ag layer changes the etching direction from along [100] to [111] and generates the TAAPN. Besides, it has been noted that the TAAPNs exhibit good Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) performance.

Resonances of nanoparticles with poor plasmonic metal tips

The catalytic and optical properties of metal nanoparticles can be combined to create platforms for light-driven chemical energy storage and enhanced in-situ reaction monitoring. However, the heavily damped plasmon resonances of many catalytically active metals (e.g. Pt, Pd) prevent this dual functionality in pure nanostructures. The addition of catalytic metals at the surface of efficient plasmonic particles thus presents a unique opportunity if the resonances can be conserved after coating. Here, nanometer resolution electron-based techniques (electron energy loss, cathodoluminescence, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) are used to show that Au particles incorporating a catalytically active but heavily damped metal, Pd, sustain multiple size-dependent localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) that are narrow and strongly localized at the Pd-rich tips. The resonances also couple with a dielectric substrate and other nanoparticles, establishing that the full range of plasmonic behavior is observed in these multifunctional nanostructures despite the presence of Pd.

Spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy of crescent-shaped plasmonic antennas

We present a study of the optical properties of gold crescent-shaped antennas by means of electron energy loss spectroscopy. These structures exhibit particularly large field enhancement near their sharp features, support two non-degenerate dipolar (i.e., optically active) localised surface plasmon resonances, and are widely tunable by a choice of their shape and dimensions. Depending on the volume and shape, we resolved up to four plasmon resonances in metallic structures under study in the energy range of 0.8 - 2.4 eV: two dipolar and quadrupolar mode and a multimodal assembly. The boundary-element-method calculations reproduced the observed spectra and helped to identify the character of the resonances. The two lowest modes are of particular importance owing to their dipolar nature. Remarkably, they are both concentrated near the tips of the crescent, spectrally well resolved and their energies can be tuned between 0.8 - 1.5 eV and 1.2 - 2.0 eV, respectively. As the lower spectral range covers the telecommunication wavelengths 1.30 and 1.55 μm, we envisage the possible use of such nanostructures in infrared communication technology.

Tuning interior nanogaps of double-shelled Au/Ag nanoboxes for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Double-shelled Au/Ag hollow nanoboxes with precisely controlled interior nanogaps (1 to 16 nm) were synthesized for gap-tunable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The double-shelled nanoboxes were prepared via a two-step galvanic replacement reaction approach using Ag nanocubes as the templates, while 4-aminothiolphenol (4-ATP) as SERS probe molecules were loaded between the two shells. More than 10-fold enhancement of SERS is observed from the double-shelled nanoboxes than Ag nanocubes. In addition, the SERS of the double-shelled nanoboxes increase significantly with the decrease of gap size, consistent with the theoretical prediction that smaller gap size induces larger localized electromagnetic enhancement.
