Abstract
Herein, we describe interfacially-assembled [7]helicene films that were deposited on graphene monolayer using the Langmuir-Schaefer deposition by utilizing the interactions of nonplanar (helicene) and planar (graphene) π–π interactions as functional antifouling coatings. Bacterial adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus on helicene—graphene films was noticeably lower than that on bare graphene, up to 96.8% reductions in bacterial adhesion. The promising bacterial antifouling characteristics of helicene films was attributed to the unique molecular geometry of helicene, i.e., nano-helix, which can hinder the nanoscale bacterial docking processes on a surface. We envision that helicene—graphene films may eventually be used as protective coatings against bacterial antifouling on the electronic components of clinical and biomedical devices.

Abstract
The effect of organolithium reagent (RLi: R=nBu, iPr, sBu, tBu), solvent (diethyl ether, diethyl ether/THF and MTBE), and stoichiometry on the (-)-sparteine-mediated silylation of 7,8-dipropyltetrathia[7]helicene shows that, unusually, substantially more than 0.5 equivalent of RLi (R=iPr, sBu, tBu) and a large excess of (-)-sparteine (R=nBu, sBu) is often needed to achieve substantial conversions and good ee values. With nBuLi, however, just one equivalent of the organolithium reagent is sufficient to obtain high conversions. Our best results were obtained using the convenient tBuLi/(-)-sparteine adduct with which the need for a high (-)-sparteine/RLi ratio can be avoided. Single- and double-kinetic resolution (KR) procedures give enantiopure samples of 2-trimethylsilyl- and 2,13-di(trimethylsilyl)-7,8-dipropyltetrathia[7]helicene and two-step double-KR combining (-)-sparteine/sBuLi and chiral formamides affords the synthetically valuable 2-formyl-7,8-dipropyltetrathia[7]helicene. This is the first use of (-)-sparteine for the enantioselective lithiation of helicenes and the first report of tBuLi outperforming sBuLi in a (-)-sparteine-mediated procedure.

Abstract
The self-assemblying behaviors of L-alanine methyl ester-containing polyphenylacetylene (PPA-Ala, in Chart 1 ) were investigated upon the evaporation of its solvent on mica and on air/water interfaces. The introduction of chiral amino acid attachments to the polyphenylacetylene backbone induced a helical conformation of the backbone, which was stabilized by various noncovalent interactions, especially hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bonds. The helicity of the polymer was further amplified in its higher-order self-assemblies as the formation of helical fibers on the surface of mica upon natural evaporation of its THF solution. By LB technique, the polymer chains were guided to form ordered parallel ridges and highly aligned, with their helical conformation still remaining. The reorganization of the chiral polymer chains on air/water interface was associated with the additional hydrophobic effect of PPA-Ala on an air/water interface. The polymer backbones had to adopt different arrangements to minimize their contact with water, and this adjustment led to the formation of aligned polymer ridges under proper surface pressure.
