The Glass Transition and Dielectric Secondary Relaxation of Fructose−Water Mixtures

Origin of ργ/T scaling of primary and secondary conductivity relaxation times in mixture of water with protic ionic liquid

Murali et al. [J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 2024, 15, 3376-3382] made ambient and high pressure dielectric measurements of a supercooled aqueous mixture of an acidic ionic liquid to find the presence of the primary (σ) conductivity relaxation together with the secondary (ν) conductivity relaxation originating from the water clusters confined by the cations and anions with relaxation times τσ and τν respectively. From the isothermal and isobaric conductivity relaxation data found on varying thermodynamic conditions (i.e. T and P) at constant τσ are the invariance of (i) the frequency dispersion or the Kohlrausch function exponent (1 - n) of the primary conductivity relaxation, and (ii) the ratio of the primary and secondary conductivity times, τσ/τν. This co-invariance of τσ, τν, and (1 - n) at constant τσ was observed before in non-aqueous ionic liquids, but it is found for the first time in aqueous ionic liquids. The new data together with PVT measurements enable Murali et al. to show additionally that both τσ and τν are functions of ργ/T with a single exponent γ = 0.58. The Coupling model is the only theory predicting the co-invariance of τσ, τν, and (1 - n) as well as the ργ/T scaling of both τσ and τν. It is applied herein to address and explain the data of the ionic liquid-water mixture.

Freezing of Water Solvation Dynamics in Nanoconfinement by Reverse Micelles at Room Temperature

Much attention has recently been paid to anomalously low dielectric constants of nanoconfined water between two slabs at room temperature (Fumagalli et al. Science, 2018, 360, 1339). These low values imply that the dipole rotation of the interfacial water on the slab is completely suppressed. Such freezing has so far been observed for water confined between solids. In contrast, it remains unclear whether this holds for water in soft confinement, which is omnipresent naturally and artificially. Here, we address this question using encapsulated reverse micelles with a dye molecule, allowing us to study water sandwiched between the surfactant and dye molecules in solution. Moreover, we examine the solvation related to the dielectric property of water, which is reorientational motion in the hydration layer of the dye molecule, by persistent hole-burning spectroscopy. We first show that the dye molecule is surrounded by water without contact with the surfactant and that the dye molecule has two or three hydration layers on average. We next demonstrate that the solvation dynamics is frozen below the water droplet size of ∼4 nm, whereas they become liquid-like when the RM size is further increased. The average gap distance (∼1.5 nm) for freezing the solvation agrees with the gap distance with no rotational water motions between slabs. Our findings may have biological relevance, providing a new aspect for understanding biological function in cells.

On the universality of viscosity in supersaturated binary aqueous sugar solutions: Cryopreservation by vitrification

Nowadays, the physical nature of supersaturated binary aqueous sugar solutions in the vicinity of the glass transition represents a very important issue due to their biological applications in cryopreservation of cells and tissues, food science and stabilization and storage of nano genetic drugs. We present the construction of the Supplemented Phase Diagram and the non-equilibrium nature of the undersaturated-supersaturated kinetic transition. The description of its thermodynamic nature is achieved through the study of behavior of their viscosity as temperature is lowered and concentration increased. In this work, we find a universal character for the viscosities of several sugar water solutions.

Glass transition phenomena and dielectric relaxations in supercooled d-lyxose aqueous solutions

Differential scanning calorimeter and broadband dielectric spectroscopy in a broad range of temperatures (150-300 K) were employed to study the d-lyxose aqueous mixture at different hydration levels. Two relaxation processes were observed in all investigated d-lyxose aqueous mixtures. A relaxation process (process-I) usually known as the primary relaxation mode which is accountable for the collective motion of d-lyxose aqueous solution, was observed above the glass transition temperature (Tg). Below Tg, another process designated as process-II was found which is mainly related to the water molecule relaxation inside the d-lyxose matrix. The average relaxation times as a function of temperature and dielectric strengths of both observed relaxation processes (I & II) were analyzed for all hydration levels in d-lyxose. It was identified that the relaxation amplitude of process-II in the d-lyxose aqueous mixture was increased drastically and their activation energies were found to be approximately independent of the content of water above critical concentration, xc = 0.28. This suggests that the dynamical process observed above xc was dominated by the presence of water clusters. In the current aqueous mixture, the critical content of water (xc) is slightly higher as compared to previously reported aqueous mixtures, indicating a more cooperative nature of water molecules with a d-lyxose matrix. Additionally, the Tg of pure water was estimated at 128 ± 5.8 K from the extrapolation of DSC Tg data of the d-lyxose aqueous solution by using the well-known Gordon-Taylor equation. Our current result gives further support to the well-accepted glass transition (Tg) of pure water.

Broadband dielectric properties of honey: effects of temperature

Dielectric properties of jujube honey were investigated at 298-358 K by broadband dielectric measurements. Four relaxation processes were observed and analyzed, which are caused by long range correlation of density fluctuation, cooperative motions of molecules, rotational polarization of bound water and collective reorientation of free water, respectively. The results of temperature dependence of dielectric parameters show that with increasing temperature, the interaction among the molecules e.g. water, fructose and glucose molecules etc. weaken, and the honey gradually forms a complete sugar solution. At a given temperature, the penetration depth at 27 MHz is much greater than that at 915 MHz and 2.45 GHz. And based on the calculated penetration depth, dielectric heating at 27 MHz seems to has more advantages for large volume of materials.

The Cooling Rate- and Volatility-Dependent Glass-Forming Properties of Organic Aerosols Measured by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy

Glass transitions of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) from liquid/semisolid to solid phase states have important implications for aerosol reactivity, growth, and cloud formation properties. In the present study, glass transition temperatures (T_g) of isoprene SOA components, including isoprene hydroxy hydroperoxide (ISOPOOH), isoprene-derived epoxydiols (IEPOX), 2-methyltetrols, and 2-methyltetrol sulfates, were measured at atmospherically relevant cooling rates (2-10 K/min) by thin film broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The results indicate that 2-methyltetrol sulfates have the highest glass transition temperature, while ISOPOOH has the lowest glass transition temperature. By varying the cooling rate of the same compound from 2 to 10 K/min, the T_g of these compounds increased by 4-5 K. This temperature difference leads to a height difference of 400-800 m in the atmosphere for the corresponding updraft induced cooling rates, assuming a hygroscopicity value (κ) of 0.1 and relative humidity less than 95%. The T_g of the organic compounds was found to be strongly correlated with volatility, and a semiempirical formula between glass transition temperatures and volatility was derived. The Gordon-Taylor equation was applied to calculate the effect of relative humidity (RH) and water content at five mixing ratios on the T_g of organic aerosols. The model shows that T_g could drop by 15-40 K as the RH changes from <5 to 90%, whereas the mixing ratio of water in the particle increases from 0 to 0.5. These results underscore the importance of chemical composition, updraft rates, and water content (RH) in determining the phase states and hygroscopic properties of organic particles.

Experimental feasibility of multistatic holography for breast microwave radar image reconstruction

PURPOSE

The goal of this study was to assess the experimental feasibility of circular multistatic holography, a novel breast microwave radar reconstruction approach, using experimental datasets recorded using a preclinical experimental setup. The performance of this approach was quantitatively evaluated by calculating the signal to clutter ratio (SCR), contrast to clutter ratio (CCR), tumor to fibroglandular response ratio (TFRR), spatial accuracy, and reconstruction time.

METHODS

Five datasets were recorded using synthetic phantoms with the dielectric properties of breast tissue in the 1-6 GHz range using a custom radar system developed by the authors. The datasets contained synthetic structures that mimic the dielectric properties of fibroglandular breast tissues. Four of these datasets the authors covered an 8 mm inclusion that emulated a tumor. A custom microwave radar system developed at the University of Manitoba was used to record the radar responses from the phantoms. The datasets were reconstructed using the proposed multistatic approach as well as with a monostatic holography approach that has been previously shown to yield the images with the highest contrast and focal quality.

RESULTS

For all reconstructions, the location of the synthetic tumors in the experimental setup was consistent with the position in the both the monostatic and multistatic reconstructed images. The average spatial error was less than 4 mm, which is half the spatial resolution of the data acquisition system. The average SCR, CCR, and TFRR of the images reconstructed with the multistatic approach were 15.0, 9.4, and 10.0 dB, respectively. In comparison, monostatic images obtained using the datasets from the same experimental setups yielded average SCR, CCR, and TFRR values of 12.8, 4.9, and 5.9 dB. No artifacts, defined as responses generated by the reconstruction method of at least half the energy of the tumor signatures, were noted in the multistatic reconstructions. The average execution time of the images formed using the proposed approach was 4 s, which is one order of magnitude faster than the current state-of-the-art time-domain multistatic breast microwave radar reconstruction algorithms.

CONCLUSIONS

The images generated by the proposed method show that multistatic holography is capable of forming spatially accurate images in real-time with signal to clutter levels and contrast values higher than other published monostatic and multistatic cylindrical radar reconstruction approaches. In comparison to the monostatic holographic approach, the images generated by the proposed multistatic approach had SCR values that were at least 50% higher. The multistatic images had CCR and TFRR values at least 200% greater than those formed using a monostatic approach.

Glass Transition Temperature of Saccharide Aqueous Solutions Estimated with the Free Volume/Percolation Model

The glass transition temperature of trehalose, sucrose, glucose, and fructose aqueous solutions has been predicted as a function of the water content by using the free volume/percolation model (FVPM). This model only requires the molar volume of water in the liquid and supercooled regimes, the molar volumes of the hypothetical pure liquid sugars at temperatures below their pure glass transition temperatures, and the molar volumes of the mixtures at the glass transition temperature. The model is simplified by assuming that the excess thermal expansion coefficient is negligible for saccharide-water mixtures, and this ideal FVPM becomes identical to the Gordon-Taylor model. It was found that the behavior of the water molar volume in trehalose-water mixtures at low temperatures can be obtained by assuming that the FVPM holds for this mixture. The temperature dependence of the water molar volume in the supercooled region of interest seems to be compatible with the recent hypothesis on the existence of two structure of liquid water, being the high density liquid water the state of water in the sugar solutions. The idealized FVPM describes the measured glass transition temperature of sucrose, glucose, and fructose aqueous solutions, with much better accuracy than both the Gordon-Taylor model based on an empirical kGT constant dependent on the saccharide glass transition temperature and the Couchman-Karasz model using experimental heat capacity changes of the components at the glass transition temperature. Thus, FVPM seems to be an excellent tool to predict the glass transition temperature of other aqueous saccharides and polyols solutions by resorting to volumetric information easily available.

Dynamics of hydrated proteins and bio-protectants: Caged dynamics, β-relaxation, and α-relaxation

BACKGROUND

The properties of the three dynamic processes, α-relaxation, ν-relaxation, and caged dynamics in aqueous mixtures and hydrated proteins are analogous to corresponding processes found in van der Waals and polymeric glass-formers apart from minor differences.

METHODS

Collection of various experimental data enables us to characterize the structural α-relaxation of the protein coupled to hydration water (HW), the secondary or ν-relaxation of HW, and the caged HW process.

RESULTS

From the T-dependence of the ν-relaxation time of hydrated myoglobin, lysozyme, and bovine serum albumin, we obtain Ton at which it enters the experimental time windows of Mössbauer and neutron scattering spectroscopies, coinciding with protein dynamical transition (PDT) temperature Td. However, for all systems considered, the α-relaxation time at Ton or Td is many orders of magnitude longer. The other step change of the mean-square-displacement (MSD) at Tg_alpha originates from the coupling of the nearly constant loss (NCL) of caged HW to density. The coupling of the NCL to density is further demonstrated by another step change at the secondary glass temperature Tg_beta in two bio-protectants, trehalose and sucrose.

CONCLUSIONS

The structural α-relaxation plays no role in PDT. Since PDT is simply due to the ν-relaxation of HW, the term PDT is a misnomer. NCL of caged dynamics is coupled to density and show transitions at lower temperature, Tg_beta and Tg_alpha.

GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE

The so-called protein dynamical transition (PDT) of hydrated proteins is not caused by the structural α-relaxation of the protein but by the secondary ν-relaxation of hydration water. Dipolar motions and ionic conduction in an ibuprofen derived ionic liquid

It was demonstrated that the combination of the almost water insoluble active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) ibuprofen with the biocompatible 1-ethanol-3-methylimidazolium [C2OHMIM] cation of an ionic liquid (IL) leads to a highly water miscible IL-API with a solubility increased by around 5 orders of magnitude. Its phase transformations, as crystallization and glass transition, are highly sensitive to the water content, the latter shifting to higher temperatures upon dehydration. By dielectric relaxation spectroscopy the dynamical behavior of anhydrous [C2OHMIM][Ibu] and with 18.5 and 3% of water content (w/w) was probed from well below the calorimetric glass transition (Tg) up to the liquid state. Multiple reorientational dipolar processes were detected which become strongly affected by conductivity and electrode polarization near above Tg. Therefore [C2OHMIM][Ibu] exhibits mixed behavior of a conventional molecular glass former and an ionic conductor being analysed in this work through conductivity, electrical modulus and complex permittivity. The dominant process, σα-process, originates by a coupling between both charge transport and dipolar mechanisms. The structural relaxation times were derived from permittivity analysis and confirmed by temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry. The temperature dependence of the β-secondary relaxation is coherent with a Johari-Goldstein (βJG) process as detected in conventional glass formers.

Dynamics of supercooled water in a biological model system of the amino acid l-lysine

Lysine solutions establish a new relaxation behaviour of supercooled interfacial water.

Broadband dielectric spectroscopic, calorimetric, and FTIR-ATR investigations of D-arabinose aqueous solutions

The dielectric relaxation behavior of D-arabinose aqueous solutions at different water concentrations is examined by broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range of 10(-2) -10(7) Hz and in the temperature range of 120-300 K. Differential scanning calorimetry is also performed to find the glass transition temperatures (T(g)). In addition, the same solutions are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy using the attenuated total reflectance (ATR) method at the same temperature interval and in the frequency range of 3800-2800 cm(-1). The temperature dependence of the relaxation times is examined for the different weight fractions (x(w)) of water along with the temperature dependence of dielectric strength. Two relaxation processes are observed in the aqueous solutions for all concentrations of water. The slower process, the so-called primary relaxation process (process-I), is responsible for the T(g) whereas the faster one (designated as process-II) is due to the reorientational motion of the water molecules. As for other hydrophilic water solutions, dielectric data for process-II indicate the existence of a critical water concentration above which water mobility is less restricted. Accordingly, FTIR-ATR measurements on aqueous solutions show an increment in the intensity (area) of the O-H stretching sub-band close to 3200 cm(-1) as the water concentration increases.

Real time breast microwave radar image reconstruction using circular holography: a study of experimental feasibility

PURPOSE

The purpose of this paper is to assess the experimental feasibility of a novel breast microwave radar reconstruction approach, circular holography, using realistic experimental datasets recorded using a preclinical experimental setup. The performance of this approach was quantitatively evaluated by calculating the signal to noise ratio, contrast to noise ratio, spatial accuracy, and reconstruction time.

METHODS

Six datasets were recorded, three corresponding to fatty cases and three containing synthetic dense tissue structures. Five of these datasets contained an 8 mm inclusion that emulated a malignant lesion. The data were acquired from synthetic phantoms that mimic the dielectric properties of breast tissues in the 1-6 GHz range using a custom experimental breast microwave radar system. The spatial accuracy and signal to noise ratio of the reconstructed was calculated for all the reconstructed images. The contrast to noise ratio of the reconstructed images corresponding to the datasets containing fibroglandular tissue regions was determined. This was done to evaluate the ability of the circular holographic method to provide images in which the responses from tumors can be distinguished from adjacent dense tissue structures. The execution time required to form the images was also measured to evaluate the data throughput of the holographic approach.

RESULTS

For all the reconstructed datasets, the location of the synthetic tumors in the experimental setup was consistent with its position in the reconstructed image. The average spatial error was 2.2 mm, which is less than half the spatial resolution of the data acquisition system. The average signal to noise ratio of the reconstructed images containing an artificial malignant lesion was 8.5 dB, while the average contrast to noise ratio was 6.7 dB. The reconstructed images presented no artifacts. The average execution time of the images formed using the proposed approach was 5 ms, which is six orders of magnitude faster than current state of the art breast microwave radar (BMR) reconstruction algorithms.

CONCLUSIONS

The results show that circular holography is capable of forming accurate images with signal to noise levels higher than 8 dB in quasi real time. Compared to BMR reconstruction algorithms tested on datasets containing dense tissue structures, the holographic approach generated images of similar spatial accuracy with higher signal to noise ratios and an acceleration factor of one order of magnitude.
