Study on the detonation wave propagation of shaped charge with three-layer liner and its driving characteristics to liner

With the continuous improvement of various armor protection technologies, the armor protection performance has increased significantly, and then the damage performance requirements of armor-piercing ammunition have also increased. In order to improve the penetration ability of the liner, a new three-layer liner structure is designed in this paper. The jet forming process was simulated by AUTODYN software. The mechanism of shaped jet forming of three-layer liner was studied. The reason why the penetration depth of three-layer liner was higher than that of ordinary liner was explained. The influence of three-layer liner on the propagation of detonation wave and the change of pressure when detonation wave acted on liner were found, which provided a new idea for improving the penetration depth of jet. The influence of liner material, cone angle and stand-off on jet forming and penetration was also studied by orthogonal optimization experiment, and the structural parameters with the best penetration performance were obtained. The results show that the pressure at the convergence point increases first and then decreases during the formation of the jet of the three-layer liner. The pressure at the convergence point when the three-layer liner material is from low impedance to high impedance from the outside to the inside is much larger than the pressure at the convergence point from high impedance to low impedance. When the three-layer liner material is Al 2024-Copper-Tantalum from the outside to the inside, the pressure at the convergence point of the three-layer liner at different times is higher than that of the double-layer liner and the single-layer liner. Reasonable matching of different impact impedance materials in the three-layer liner can greatly improve the pressure value of the detonation wave acting on the cone liner. The maximum pressure at the convergence point on the axis is 39.10 GPa, which is 22.00% higher than that of the double-layer liner at the convergence point, and 53.03% higher than that of the single-layer liner at the convergence point. The orthogonal design test scheme is simulated and analyzed. The penetration depth is taken as the observation index, and the range analysis is adopted. The results show that the material matching of the three-layer liner has the greatest influence on the depth of the jet penetrating the target plate, followed by the cone angle of the three-layer liner. Relatively speaking, the stand-off has the least influence on the result. Reasonable matching of materials with different impact impedances in the three-layer liner can maximize the penetration depth of the jet into the target plate.

Impedance-based polymer microneedle patch sensor for continuous interstitial fluid glucose monitoring

Early detection and effective blood glucose control are critical for preventing and managing diabetes-related complications. Conventional glucometers provide point-in-time measurements but are painful and cannot facilitate continuous monitoring. Continuous glucose monitoring systems are comfortable but face challenges in terms of accuracy, cost, and sensor lifespan. This study aimed to develop a microneedle-based sensor patch for minimally invasive, painless, and continuous glucose monitoring in the interstitial fluid to address these limitations. Experimental results confirm painless and minimally invasive penetration of the skin tissue with cylindrical microneedles (3 × 3 array) to a depth of approximately 520 μm with minimal loading. The microneedle sensors fabricated with precision using the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor process were immobilized with glucose oxidase, as confirmed through phase angle analysis. Long-term tests confirmed the effective operation of the sensor for up to seven days. Glucose concentrations determined from the fitted concentration-impedance curves correlated well with those measured using commercial glucometers, indicating the reliability and precision of the microneedle sensor. The flexible and minimally invasive sensor developed in this study facilitates painless and continuous glucose monitoring.

Fluorescent microscopy evaluation of diode laser effect on the penetration depth of turmeric (Curcuma longa) extract cream on skin tissues of Wistar rats

The study investigates the effect of diode laser exposure on curcumin's skin penetration, using turmeric extraction as a light-sensitive chemical and various laser light sources. It uses an in vivo skin analysis method on Wistar strain mice. The lasers are utilized at wavelengths of 403 nm, 523 nm, 661 nm, and 979 nm. The energy densities of the lasers are 20.566 J/cm2, 20.572 J/cm2, 21.162 J/cm2, and 21.298 J/cm2, which are comparable to one another. The experimental animals were divided into three groups: base cream (BC), turmeric extract cream (TEC), and the combination laser (L), BC, and TEC treatment group. Combination light source (LS) with cream (C) was performed with 8 combinations namely 523 nm ((L1 + BC) and (L1 + TEC)), 661 nm ((L2 + BC) and (L2 + TEC)), 403 nm ((L3 + BC) and (L3 + TEC)), and 979 nm ((L4 + BC) and (L4 + TEC)). The study involved applying four laser types to cream-covered and turmeric extract-coated rat skin, with samples scored for analysis. The study found that both base cream and curcumin cream had consistent pH values of 7-8, within the skin's range, and curcumin extract cream had lower viscosity. The results of the statistical analysis of Kruskal-Wallis showed a significant value (p < 0.05), which means that there are at least two different laser treatments. The results of the post hoc analysis with Mann-Whitney showed that there was no significant difference in the LS treatment with the addition of BC or TEC when compared to the BC or TEC treatment alone (p > 0.05), while the treatment using BC and TEC showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). Laser treatment affects the penetration of the turmeric extract cream into the rat skin tissue.

Development of metasurface based hyperthermia lens applicator for heating of cancerous tissues

Numerous designs and methods have been examined to improve penetration depth (PD), but there is a need for research to explore the potential increase in PD through uniform heating, a compact applicator, and low input power. This paper presents metasurface based hyperthermia lens applicator with water bolus for uniform heating of cancerous tissues. The proposed applicator consists of a stacked spiral antenna and a spiral-shaped frequency selective surface as a superstrate. The spiral antenna and superstrate are optimized on a low cost FR4 substrate having a size of 32 × 32 × 3.27mm3 and 10 × 10 × 1.6mm3 (size of the unit cell), respectively. The proposed applicator is simulated with heterogeneous phantom (skin, fat, and muscle layers) and with the Gustav voxel model with and without a water bolus layer. The number of unit cells in the superstrate is optimized to direct the maximum energy toward the tumor location. The performance study of the applicator is carried out in terms of specific absorption rate, PD, and effective field size. Further, thermal analysis is carried out with 1.9 W of input power at the antenna port, and the highest 44.7 °C temperature rise is obtained. The cancerous tissue's (tumor) surrounding temperature is between 41 and 45 °C, which is adequate for efficient hyperthermia treatment. Finally, the proposed metasurface hyperthermia lens applicator is fabricated and experimentally validated in a mimicked phantom's presence.

Spatial mapping and quantitative evaluation of protein corona on PEGylated mesoporous silica particles by super-resolution fluorescence microscopy

Nanoparticles (NPs) adsorb serum proteins when exposed to biological fluids, forming a dynamic protein corona that has a profound impact on their overall biological profile and fate. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) modification is the most widely used strategy to mitigate and inhibit protein corona formation. Nevertheless, the accurate mapping and quantification of PEG inhibition effects on protein corona formation have scarcely been reported. Herein, we demonstrate the direct observation and quantification of protein corona adsorbed onto PEGylated mesoporous silica particles by direct stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (dSTORM). The variation tendency of protein penetration depth in terms of PEG molecular weights and incubated time is investigated for the first time. The maximum penetration depths present slight increase with the prolonged incubation time, while they tend to remarkably decrease with increased chain length of modified PEG. Moreover, the co-localization of preformed protein corona with lysosomes and the destination of adsorbed protein are demonstrated. Our method provides important technical characterization information and in-depth understanding of protein corona adsorbed onto PEGylated mesoporous silica particles. This shines new light on the behaviors of silica materials in cells and may promote their practical applications in biomedicine.

Enhanced transscleral delivery using superficial ultrasound exposure and drug-loaded hydrogel

This study employed superficial ultrasound exposure of good ocular safety and a drug-loaded hydrogel of long residence time to enable transscleral delivery. First, we designed an acoustic adaptor to limit the ultrasound exposure depth to 1.59 mm to protect the posterior eye segments. Then, we optimized the alginate/polyacrylamide ratio (3:7) of a dual-crosslinked hydrogel to enable ultrasound-triggered release of model drug (70-kDa fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated dextran). Using fluorescence imaging to quantify the drug release, we showed that the developed method resulted in enhanced transscleral delivery in both ex vivo porcine scleras (2.6-fold) and in vivo rabbit scleras (2.2-fold). We also demonstrated that the method increased the drug penetration depth to the whole thickness of the sclera. In particular, the drug release efficiency increased with increasing ultrasound exposure time (1 and 3 min) and intensity (8, 19, 36, and 61 mW/cm2). Using scanning electron microscopy, we revealed that ultrasound exposure resulted in rougher surfaces and microscale rupture of the hydrogel. Moreover, Masson staining of scleral slices showed that the integrity of the top scleral fibers was disturbed by ultrasound exposure, and this disturbance recovered 3 days later. Our work demonstrates that the developed method holds great potential for mediating ocular drug delivery.

[Microfocussed vs. macrofocussed ultrasound for body contouring]

Focussed ultrasound is capable of heating tissue in small microscopic areas up to 65-70 °C and is a technique that can be used not only for destruction of superficial tissue but also for fat reduction. The focussing of sound waves according to the principle of a bundling of rays is carried out without injury to the skin. The penetration depth of the coagulation depends on the wavelength. Wavelengths that reach penetration depths of 6mm, 9mm and even 13mm and therefore deeper layers of the dermis and fat tissue are new. These enable fat cells to be eliminated and ultimately lead to girth reduction and also additionally to tightening. The effectiveness has been confirmed by several studies.

Nano-Indentation to Determine Mechanical Properties of Intraocular Lenses: Evaluating Penetration Depth, Material Stiffness, and Elastic Moduli

INTRODUCTION

Intraocular lenses (IOL) should remain in the eye for life after implantation into the capsular bag during cataract surgery. The material must meet various requirements. It is crucial that the material has the best biocompatibility, and it should be flexible and soft for best possible implantation process but also sufficiently stable and stiff for good centering in the eye and posterior capsule opacification prevention.

METHODS

In this laboratory experiment, we used nano-indentation for the mechanical assessment of three hydrophobic acrylic (A, B, C), three hydrophilic acrylic (D, E, F), and one silicone (G) intraocular lens. We wanted to determine whether some react more sensitively to touching/handling than others. The indentation elastic modulus and the creep were obtained from the force displacement curve. For measuring penetration depth and testing of possible damage to the intraocular lenses, the samples were measured at room temperature. A 200-µm-diameter ruby spherical tipped indenter was used for all the tests. Indentations were made to three different maximum loads, namely 5 mN (milli Newton), 15 mN, and 30 mN and repeated three times.

RESULTS

The lowest penetration depth (12 µm) was observed with IOL B. However, IOL A, D, and F showed similar low penetration depths (20, 18, and 23 µm, respectively). Lenses C and E showed slightly higher penetration depths of 36 and 39 µm, respectively. The silicone lens (G) showed the greatest penetration depth of 54.6 µm at a maximum load of 5 mN. With higher maximal loads (15 and 30 mN) the penetration depth increased significantly. Lens C, however, showed the same results at both 15 and 30 mN with no increase of penetration depth. This seems to fit well with the material and manufacturing process of the lens (lathe-cut). During the holding time of 30 s at constant force all six acrylic lenses showed a significant increase of the creep (CIT 21-43%). Lens G showed the smallest creep with 14%. The mean indentation modulus (EIT) values ranged from 1 to 37 MPa. IOL B had the largest EIT of 37 MPa, which could be caused by the low water content.

CONCLUSION

It was found that results correlate very well with the water content of the material in the first place. The manufacturing process (molded versus lathe-cut) seems to play another important role. Since all included acrylic lenses are very similar, it was not surprising that the measured differences are marginal. Even though hydrophobic materials with lower water content showed higher relative stiffness, penetration and defects can also occur with these. The surgeon and scrub nurse should always be aware that macroscopic changes are difficult to detect but that defects could theoretically lead to clinical effects. The principle of not touching the center of the IOL optic at any time should be taken seriously.

Semi-computational approach for assessing the damage to human soft tissues: the case of FMJRN versus HP-XTP 9 mm bullet penetration in ballistic soap

Ballistic soap blocks are used in wound ballistics to assess the potential damage of the ammunition employed, allowing observation of the energy transfer occurred along the wound channel. The density and viscosity of ballistic soap (also called tissue simulant) simulate, to a good degree of approximation, the effect resulting from the interaction of penetrating bullets with living human soft tissue. Ballistic soap has a "plastic reaction" to bullet penetration, and therefore, unlike ballistic gelatin, the expansion of temporary cavity remains imprinted in the tissue simulant. When the soap blocks are sectioned or divided with nondestructive instrumental techniques (e.g., Compton's scattering tomography), it's possible, therefore, to observe the temporary cavity determined by the penetration of the bullet. This study provides insight into the severity of injuries originated from two different types of bullets of the same caliber by employing ballistic soap as a tissue simulant. In addition, it provides guidance to forensic practitioners on the proper use of ballistic soap for simulating gunshot wounds. The semi-computational approach employed, based on the results obtained from the firing tests, allowed the authors to understand that there is likely a threshold value of projectile energy density, close to 1 J/mm², beyond which its penetration into the ballistic soap ceases.

Penetration of hydroxyl radicals in the aqueous phase surrounding a cavitation bubble

In the sonochemical degradation of nonvolatile compounds, the free radicals must be delivered into the aqueous solution from the cavitation bubble to initiate reduction-oxidation reactions. The penetration depth in the liquid becomes an important parameter that influences the radical delivery efficiency and eventual treatment performance. However, the transport of radicals in the liquid phase is not well understood yet. In this paper, we focus on the most reactive OH radical and numerically simulate its penetration behavior. This is realized by solving the coupled equations of bubble dynamics, intracavity chemistry, and radical dispersion in the aqueous phase. The results present both the local and global penetration patterns for the OH radicals. By performing simulations over a wide range of acoustic parameters, we find an undesirable phenomenon that the penetration can be adversely suppressed when strengthening the radical production. A mechanistic analysis attributes this to the excessively vigorous recombination reactions associated with high radical concentrations near the bubble interface. In this circumstance, the radicals are massively consumed and converted into molecular species before they can appreciably diffuse away. Our study sheds light on the interplay between radical production inside the bubble and dispersion in the outside liquid. The derived conclusions provide guides for sonochemical applications from a new perspective.

Spatial Resolution of Micro-Raman Spectroscopy for Particulate Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)

The fast-growing lithium battery industry needs quality control tools. Micro-Raman spectroscopy is a popular technique for structural characterization and can be used for impurity revealing. The problem is that the method resolution can be appropriately quantified for a sample with a simple planar geometry, like a single crystal. Much less studied are powders consisting of particles of irregular shape and sizes close to the wavelengths of the probing laser irradiation. In this work, we have examined a series of single particles of transparent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) on a Si substrate. This model experiment revealed the significant spread of local optical properties, blocking properties of pores, and abnormal enhancement of Raman response from a bottom Si layer under some of particles. As the result, we can conclude that vertical resolution of micro-Raman spectroscopy for particulate systems with inhomogeneity of shape and structure should be described not quantitative, but qualitative, and the Raman probing of powder samples can be both multilayer and superficial.

Effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite treatment on the bonding of four adhesive systems to fluorotic enamel

The study evaluated the effect of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) treatment on fluorotic enamel bonding of four adhesive systems. They were Single Bond 2 (SB2), Prime&Bond NT (PBN), Clearfil SE Bond (CSB), and Single Bond Universal (SBU). One hundred eighteen extracted moderate fluorotic molars were divided into eight groups according to NaOCl pretreatment and four adhesive systems. The microshear bond strength (μSBS), etching pattern, and penetration depth (PD) were observed. The statistical method was two-way ANOVA and least significant difference (LSD) test (α=0.05). The application of NaOCl significantly increased the μSBS of PBN and SBU (p<0.05). The enamel-etching pattern of CSB and SBU was deeper under SEM. A noticeable increase of PD was in SB2 and SBU after the application of NaOCl (p<0.05). Pretreatment of 5.25% NaOCl for the 60 s can increase μSBS of PBN and SBU, PD of SB2 and SBU, and improve enamel-etching pattern of CSB and SBU to fluorotic enamel.

Evaluation of dentinal tubule penetration of Irritrol and chlorhexidine irrigating solutions activated using EDDY and photon-initiated photoacoustic streaming

The aim of the study was to compare the penetration depth and percentage of Irritrol and chlorhexidine (CHX) solutions into dentinal tubules using conventional needle irrigation (CI), EDDY, and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS). Sixty oval shaped mandibular premolar teeth were divided into two main groups according to the irrigating solutions as follows; Irritrol and CHX, which were later randomly divided into three subgroups according to the activation technique; CI, EDDY and PIPS (n = 10). Following the irrigation activation procedures, all roots were horizontally sectioned at 3 (apical), 8 (middle), and 13 (coronal) mm from the root apex and then examined with confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). Penetration depth (µm) and penetration percentage (%) as determined from the images were analyzed using LSM Image Browser software (Zeiss) and Image J analysis software (V. 1.44p; National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD), respectively. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed for multiple comparisons. In both Irritrol and CHX groups, the PIPS activation system demonstrated the highest values for irrigant penetration depth and penetration percentage compared with the other activation methods. Activation of the CHX and Irritrol the final irrigating solutions with PIPS activation technique improved the penetration depth and percentage solutions into the dentinal tubules.

Effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles incorporated into tissue conditioner on antifungal, physical, and mechanical properties

This study evaluated the antifungal, physical, and mechanical properties of tissue conditioner incorporated with different amounts of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnOnps) at different storage times (0, 7, and 14 days). Specimens of 0, 5, 10, 15 wt% ZnOnps, or 15 wt% nystatin incorporated into tissue conditioner were fabricated (control, 5Zn, 10Zn, 15Zn, and Nys). The direct contact test (n=6) was performed to evaluate the antifungal effect against C. albicans suspension. The penetration depth (n=6) and tensile bond strength (n=8) were evaluated following ISO 13139. The 15Zn significantly reduced C. albicans cell number compared with control at all storage times (p<0.001). The penetration depths and tensile bond strengths of the 5Zn, 10Zn, 15Zn, and Nys were not significantly different compared with control at all storage times (p>0.05). In conclusion, the 15Zn provides antifungal effect up to 14 days without adverse effects on penetration depth and tensile bond strength.

Broadband dielectric properties of honey: effects of temperature

Dielectric properties of jujube honey were investigated at 298-358 K by broadband dielectric measurements. Four relaxation processes were observed and analyzed, which are caused by long range correlation of density fluctuation, cooperative motions of molecules, rotational polarization of bound water and collective reorientation of free water, respectively. The results of temperature dependence of dielectric parameters show that with increasing temperature, the interaction among the molecules e.g. water, fructose and glucose molecules etc. weaken, and the honey gradually forms a complete sugar solution. At a given temperature, the penetration depth at 27 MHz is much greater than that at 915 MHz and 2.45 GHz. And based on the calculated penetration depth, dielectric heating at 27 MHz seems to has more advantages for large volume of materials.

Effect of geometrical parameters on the fluid dynamics of air-powered needle-free jet injectors

Needle-free jet injectors are non-invasive systems having intradermal drug delivery capabilities. At present, they revolutionize the next phase of drug delivery and therapeutic applications in the medical industry. An efficiently designed injection chamber can reduce the energy consumption required to achieve the maximum penetration depth in skin tissue. In this study, the authors explored the effect of various geometrical parameters using a computational fluid dynamics tool. Peak stagnation pressure during the initial phase of the injection procedure was considered as the quantifier for comparison because of its proportional relationship with the initial penetration depth during the injection process. Peak stagnation pressure indicates the maximum energy transformation that could happen between the microjet and skin tissues for an injection procedure. The results of this study indicated a tradeoff that exists between the attainable density and velocity of the microjet on the skin surface with variation in nozzle diameter; the optimum nozzle diameter was found to be within 200-250 μm under the present conditions. The authors also observed a discrepancy in the peak stagnation pressure value for lower filling ratios with variation in chamber diameter; hence, filling ratio of at least 50% was recommended for such systems. Furthermore, a 150% increase in the peak stagnation pressure was obtained with an angle of entry of 10°. In general, this study could provide valuable insights into the effect of geometrical parameters in the fluid dynamics characteristics of propelled microjets from the nozzle of a needle-free jet injector. Such information could be useful for the design of a mechanically driven needle-free jet injector having limited control over the energizing mechanism.

Over the past decades, ATR-FTIR has emerged as promising tool for the identification of plants at the genus and (sub-) species level through surface measurements of intact leaves. Theoretical considerations regarding the penetration depth of the evanescent wave into the sample and the thickness of plant leaf cuticles suggest that the structure and composition of the cuticle represent universal taxonomic markers. However, experimental evidence for this hypothesis is scarce. In the current contribution, we present results of a series of simple experiments on epidermal monolayers derived from the bulbs of Allium cepa L. (Amaryllidaceae) as a model system to study the effect of an IR active probe located beyond the theoretical penetration depth of the evanescent wave. We found that this probe had a significant influence on the ATR-FTIR spectra for up to 4 epidermal layers stacked on top of each other corresponding to a total thickness of around 60 μm, exceeding the theoretical penetration depth of the evanescent wave by a factor of around 20. Altogether, our data indicate a major discrepancy between theory and practice in ATR-FTIR spectroscopy in general and provide strong evidence that in general plant leaf spectra cannot be fully explained by the structure and composition of the cuticle alone.

Evaluation of Marginal Microleakage and Depth of Penetration of Different Materials Used as Pit and Fissure Sealants: An In Vitro Study

Objective

Fissure sealants hold a great significance in the preclusion of inception of caries process. The present in vitro study assesses the marginal sealing ability and penetration depth of various dental products used as pit and fissure sealants.

Study design

Sixty freshly extracted human non-carious premolars were arbitrarily categorized into four groups of 15 samples. Prophylaxis of occlusal surfaces of sample teeth was done with pumice slurry and sealant was applied. Later, the teeth underwent thermocycling and immersion in 5% methylene blue for 24 hours. Sectioning of teeth samples was done buccolingually and they were analyzed under stereomicroscope.

Statistical analysis used

Nonparametric tests Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney were applied to carry out microleakage comparison. The percentage penetration depth was compared using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. Tukey's post hoc test was applied for multiple analogies.

Results

Highest microleakage was seen in glass ionomer-based sealant followed by flowable composite and least for classical sealant. Flowable nanocomposite gave comparable results with that of the classical sealant. No statistical difference was found with respect to depth of penetration between different tested materials.

Conclusion

Flowable nanocomposite can be considered as a promising substitute for sealing fissures and thus can be endorsed to caries-susceptible pediatric patients.

Testing the Clinical Applicability of Resin Infiltration of Developmental Enamel Hypomineralization Lesions Using an In Vitro Model

Aim

The aim of this study is to investigate the penetration abilities of a commercially available low-viscosity resin infiltrant into developmentally hypomineralized teeth in vitro.

Materials and methods

Four extracted third molars of a 17-year-old patient with signs of developmental enamel hypomineralization (discoloration, increased opacity, and surface roughness) were infiltrated with a low-viscosity resin mixed with a fluorescent dye, according to the manufacturer's standard protocol. Four extracted molars with sound enamel or showing only initial fissure caries were used as a control group. Specimens were embedded in polymethylmethacrylate, and grindings were prepared. High-resolution projectional radiography of the grindings was performed, and, for one specimen, quantitative micro-computed tomography was used to measure hydroxyapatite density in enamel and dentin lesions. After decalcification, the grindings were examined by reflected bright-field microscopy, wide-field fluorescence microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Fluorescence micrographs were superimposed on the radiographs and analyzed correlatively.

Results

The pattern of hypo-/demineralization in enamel and dentin in developmentally hypomineralized teeth showed a good congruence with the pattern of resin infiltration. Cavitations and dentin tubules up to a depth of 2 mm beyond cavitations were filled by the infiltrant. In control teeth, the penetration of the infiltrant was limited to decalcified enamel areas (initial fissure caries).

Conclusions

In vitro infiltration of developmentally hypomineralized enamel was successful.

Clinical significance

Resin infiltration might be considered as a routine procedure in the treatment of developmentally hypomineralized teeth. Further investigations with higher sample sizes, different degrees of severity, different stages of lesion extension, and modified treatment protocols are necessary.

Rapid in situ determination of heavy metal concentrations in polluted water via portable XRF: Using Cu and Pb as example

In this research, the effectiveness of using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF), with the help of waterproof film, to determine the concentration of the heavy metals Cu and Pb in polluted water was assessed through indoor and field studies. The effects of the thickness of the film and the distance between the instrument and sample were also evaluated. The penetration depth of X-rays in water was found to be between 2 mm and 4 mm, and a water sample of at least 4 mm in depth was thus suggested. The minimum detectable concentration for Cu was ca. 21 ppm and ca. 28 ppm for Pb. Based on the indoor study, the pXRF results were found to be comparable with the certified concentrations of prepared solutions (R² > 0.99 for both Cu and Pb). The field pXRF readings also showed a good linear correlation with the corresponding laboratory results (R² > 0.95 for Cu). The calibration formula derived from indoor analysis was used to correct the field pXRF results and effectively improved the accuracy. Consequently, pXRF has the potential to be applied to the analysis of polluted waters with relatively high concentrations (e.g., >20-30 ppm Cu), which would benefit the in situ monitoring of water pollution caused by heavy metals.

Dielectric characterization of raw and packed soy milks from 0.5 to 20 GHz at temperatures from 20 to 70 ºC

For microwave heating pasteurization processes, knowledge of the dielectric characteristics of foods are very important. In this paper, we present the dielectric properties of raw soy milk and commercial packed soy milk of four different flavors (light, natural, chocolate and pecan) from 500 MHz to 20 GHz, covering most of the assigned frequencies by the Federal Communications Commission for heating purposes. Experiments were performed using an open-ended-coaxial probe and a vector network analyzer. This characterization was carried out for temperatures ranging from 20 to 70 °C in steps of 10 °C. The dielectric constant of soy milks decreased with increasing frequency, while increasing temperature resulted in decreasing of the values. The dielectric loss factor presents a U shape behavior, where the loss started decreasing from 500 MHz to about 3 GHz and then, it increased again up to 20 GHz. In addition, higher temperatures decreased the dielectric loss. Applying the higher order Debye´s equation, two relaxation times were calculated for the soymilks, with good agreement with the measured properties. Deeper penetration of microwaves were obtained for raw soy milk at 915 MHz, making it suitable for microwave pasteurization.

Wounding potential of 4.4-mm (.173) caliber steel ball projectiles

From time to time, severe or fatal injuries caused by small caliber air rifle projectiles are seen. In forensic sciences, the theoretical wounding potential of these weapons and projectiles is widely known. Usually, shots against the skull were reported and, in these cases, penetrating the eyes or thin bone layers of the temporal region. Amongst a huge number of different projectiles available for air guns, sub-caliber 4.4-mm (.173) caliber steel ball projectiles were used in an unusual suicide case. This case led to fundamental questions concerning wound ballistics. An 82-year-old man shot once against his right temporal region and twice into his mouth with a 4.5-mm (.177) caliber air rifle. Because of the exceptionally deep penetration of the base of the skull and the use of spherical-shaped sub-caliber air rifle projectiles, terminal ballistic features were analyzed and compared to results published in forensic literature. Test shots using the same weapon and similar projectiles were fired into ballistic gelatin to measure and calculate basic wound ballistic variables of cal. 4.4-mm (.173) steel balls. In comparison, further test shots with cal. 4.5-mm (.177) steel balls BB (ball bearing), flat-headed and pointed air rifle pellets ("diabolos") were carried out. The theoretical penetration depth in solid bone was calculated with 36.4 mm, and test shots in gelatin from hard contact produced an on-average wound track of 120 mm underlining the potential wounding effect. Furthermore, spherical projectiles could roll back and forth within the barrel, and an air cushion between projectile and breechblock can reduce muzzle velocity by more than half, explaining the retained missile in the temporal region.

Microleakage and penetration depth of different fissure sealant materials after cyclic thermo-mechanic and brushing simulation

The aim of the study was to evaluate microleakage and the penetration-depths of different fissure-sealant materials applied with/without enameloplasty after cyclic aging. One-hundred-sixty mandibular molars were divided into non-invasive and enameloplasty preparation groups and eight material subgroups, including: flowable composites (microhyrid, nanohybrid, and nanofilled), three resin-based (unfilled, filled, and highly-filled), a giomer-based, and a glass-ionomer-based fissure sealant. Specimens were subjected to two-year cyclic chewing and brushing simulation. After 5% basic-fuchsin dye penetration, specimens were sectioned and scored under stereomicroscope. Kruskal-Wallis statistical data showed that preparation type significantly affected the penetration of all tested materials (p<0.05), but not significantly affected microleakage (p>0.05). Flowable composites showed the best and the glass-ionomer-based sealant showed the worst penetration and microleakage. Slight preparation of fissures is not important in microleakage. However, enameloplasty significantly enhanced the depth of penetration of the sealants. Flowable composites offer promising results at the fissure sealing.

Dielectric study of Clove oil

Dielectric properties of clove oil were determined using an impedance gain phase analyzer (HP 4194 A) at discrete frequencies between 10 kHz and 3 MHz and a range of temperature between 25 °C and 45 °C. A micro processor controller based temperature controller (Julabo F-25) was used for keeping the temperature of clove oil constant. Dielectric constant of the sample is found to decrease with increase in frequency and temperature, while dielectric loss decreases with increase in frequency but increases with increase in temperature. Penetration depth has been calculated with the help of dielectric data and is found to decrease with increase in frequency.

Analytical investigation of magnetic field effects on Proton lateral deflection and penetrating depth in the water phantom: A relativistic approach

Background

Integrated proton therapy - MRI systems are capable of delivering high doses to the target tissues near sensitive organs and achieve better therapeutic results; however, the applied magnetic field for imaging, influences the protons path, changes the penetration depth and deflects the particles, laterally, leading to dose distribution variations.

Objective

To determine the effects of a magnetic field on the range and the lateral deflection of protons, analytically.

Methods

An analytical survey based on protons energy and range power law relation, without using small angle assumption was done. The penetration depth and lateral deflection of protons with therapeutic energy ranges 60–250 MeV in the presence of uniform magnetic fields of 0–10T intensities, were calculated analytically. Calculations were done for relativistic conditions with Mathematica software version 7.0, and MATLAB 7.0 was applied to plot curves and curve fittings.

Results

In the presence of a magnetic field, the depth of Bragg peak was decreased and it was shifted laterally. A second order polynomial model with power equation for its coefficients and a power model with quadratic polynomial coefficients predicted the maximum lateral deflection (y_max) and maximum penetration depth (z_max) variations with energy and magnetic field intensity, respectively.

Conclusion

The applied correction for deflection angle will give more reliable results in initial energy of 250 MeV and 3T magnetic field intensity. For lower energies and magnetic field intensities the differences are negligible, clinically.

Beta particle transport and its impact on betavoltaic battery modeling

Simulation of beta particle transport from a Ni-63 radioisotope in silicon using the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) transport code for monoenergetic beta particle average energy, monoenergetic beta particle maximum energy, and the more precise full beta energy spectrum of Ni-63 were demonstrated. The beta particle penetration depth and the shape of the energy deposition varied significantly for different transport approaches. A penetration depth of 2.25±0.25µm with a peak in energy deposition was found when using a monoenergetic beta particle average energy and a depth of 14.25±0.25µm with an exponential decrease in energy deposition was found when using a full beta energy spectrum and a 0° angular variation. For a 90° angular variation, i.e. an isotropic source, the penetration depth was decreased to 12.75±0.25µm and the backscattering coefficient increased to 0.46 with 30.55% of the beta energy escaping when using a full beta energy spectrum. Similarly, for a 0° angular variation and an isotropic source, an overprediction in the short circuit current and open circuit voltage solved by a simplified drift-diffusion model was observed when compared to experimental results from the literature. A good agreement in the results was found when self-absorption and isotope dilution in the source was considered. The self-absorption effect was 15% for a Ni-63 source with an activity of 0.25mCi. This effect increased to about 28.5% for a higher source activity of 1mCi due to an increase in thickness of the Ni-63 source. Source thicknesses of approximately 0.1µm and 0.4µm for these Ni-63 activities predicted about 15% and 28.5% self-absorption in the source, respectively, using MCNP simulations with an isotropic source. The modeling assumptions with different beta particle energy inputs, junction depth of the semiconductor, backscattering of beta particles, an isotropic beta source, and self-absorption of the radioisotope have significant impacts in betavoltaic battery design.

Wound morphology in contact shots from blank cartridge handguns: a study on composite models

It is a well-known fact that blank cartridge guns can cause penetrating and even fatal injuries when discharged in contact or at very close ranges. In these cases, the gas jet perforates the skin leaving an entrance wound similar to that from a conventional gun. In order to investigate the wound morphology in contact shots from blank firearms, test shots were fired at composite models of pig skin and gelatin blocks using three different calibre 9-mm blank cartridge handguns (two pistols and one revolver) and two types of ammunition. It turned out that the penetrating gas jet produced roundish skin defects resembling bullet entrance holes. Small skin particles from the perforation site were dispersed in the underlying simulant where radiating cracks containing greyish gunshot residues indicated the original expansion of the inrushing combustion gases. Apart from the size of the permanent entrance hole in the skin and the final position of the displaced tissue particles, the penetration depth of the gas jet was determined. Under the specified conditions of the test shots, the zone of mechanical destruction within the simulant was 2.2 to 6.1 cm in length, which illustrates the injuring potential of contact shots inflicted with blank cartridge handguns.

Effects of suture site or penetration depth on anchor location in all-inside meniscal repair

BACKGROUND

To evaluate the effects of suture site or penetration depth on anchor location in all-inside meniscal repair.

METHODS

Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric knees were evaluated after meniscal repair using eight FasT-Fix360 (FF360) devices (Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, Andover, MA) (16 anchors) for each knee. The penetration depth was 14mm, the distance same from the periphery to insertion point, in four knees (Group A) and that in the remaining four knees (Group B) was 18mm. The anchor location in two groups was evaluated after attentive dissection.

RESULTS

Of 32 anchors for the medial meniscus, 94% were on the capsule, including the superficial medial collateral ligament (sMCL) in both groups. For the lateral meniscus, 47% anchors in Group A and 44% anchors in Group B were on the capsule. Total three anchors were over the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), whereas 15 anchors were behind the popliteus tendon (POP). Although all three anchors settled in the subcutaneous fat were in Group B, no significant difference was observed in anchor location between two groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Secure fixation to thin membranous tissue can be achieved for the medial meniscal repair using FF360, while some were located in/on bunchy LCL or POP in lateral meniscal repair. Only anchors with additional four-millimeter penetration depth were in the subcutaneous fat, although there was no effect of the penetration depth to anchor location. Clinically, for lateral meniscal repair, penetrating toward POP/LCL should be avoided and four-millimeter deeper penetration depth might be a risk for the subcutaneous irritation.

Penetration of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots into differentiated vs undifferentiated Caco-2 cells

Background

Quantum dots (QDs) have great potential as fluorescent labels but cytotoxicity relating to extra- and intracellular degradation in biological systems has to be addressed prior to biomedical applications. In this study, human intestinal cells (Caco-2) grown on transwell membranes were used to study penetration depth, intracellular localization, translocation and cytotoxicity of CdSe/ZnS QDs with amino and carboxyl surface modifications. The focus of this study was to compare the penetration depth of QDs in differentiated vs undifferentiated cells using confocal microscopy and image processing.

Results

Caco-2 cells were exposed to QDs with amino (NH₂) and carboxyl (COOH) surface groups for 3 days using a concentration of 45 µg cadmium ml⁻¹. Image analysis of confocal/multiphoton microscopy z-stacks revealed no penetration of QDs into the cell lumen of differentiated Caco-2 cells. Interestingly, translocation of cadmium ions onto the basolateral side of differentiated monolayers was observed using high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Membrane damage was neither detected after short nor long term incubation in Caco-2 cells. On the other hand, intracellular localization of QDs after exposure to undifferentiated cells was observed and QDs were partially located within lysosomes.

Conclusions

In differentiated Caco-2 monolayers, representing a model for small intestinal enterocytes, no penetration of amino and carboxyl functionalized CdSe/ZnS QDs into the cell lumen was detected using microscopy analysis and image processing. In contrast, translocation of cadmium ions onto the basolateral side could be detected using ICP-MS. However, even after long term incubation, the integrity of the cell monolayer was not impaired and no cytotoxic effects could be detected. In undifferentiated Caco-2 cells, both QD modifications could be found in the cell lumen. Only to some extend, QDs were localized in endosomes or lysosomes in these cells. The results indicate that the differentiation status of Caco-2 cells is an important factor in internalization and localization studies using Caco-2 cells. Furthermore, a combination of microscopy analysis and sensitive detection techniques like ICP-MS are necessary for studying the interaction of cadmium containing QDs with cells.

Phantom study quantifying the depth performance of a handheld magnetometer for sentinel lymph node biopsy

PURPOSE

The use of a magnetic nanoparticle tracer and handheld magnetometer for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) was recently introduced to overcome drawbacks associated with the use of radioisotope tracers. Unlike the gamma probe, the used magnetometers are not only sensitive to the tracer, but also the diamagnetic human body. This potentially limits the performance of the magnetometer when used clinically.

METHODS

A phantom, mimicking the magnetic and mechanical properties of the human axilla, was constructed. The depth performance of two current generation magnetometers was evaluated in this phantom. LN-phantoms with tracer uptake ranging from 5 to 500μg iron were placed at clinically relevant depths of 2.5, 4 and 5.5cm. Distance-response curves were obtained to quantify the depth performance of the probes.

RESULTS

The depth performance of both probes was limited. In the absence of diamagnetic material and forces on the probe (ideal conditions) a LN-phantom with high uptake (500μg iron) could first be detected at 3.75cm distance. In the phantom, only superficially placed LNs (2.5cm) with high uptake (500μg iron) could be detected from the surface. The penetration depth was insufficient to detect LNs with lower uptake, or which were located deeper.

CONCLUSION

The detection distance of the current generation magnetometers is limited, and does not meet the demands formulated by the European Association for Nuclear Medicine for successful transcutaneous SLN localization. Future clinical trials should evaluate whether the limited depth sensitivity is of influence to the clinical outcome of the SLNB procedure.

Cathodoluminescence properties of gadolinium-doped CaMoO4:Eu nanoparticles

Gadolinium (Gd(3+)) doped CaMoO4:Eu nanoparticles were prepared via facile auto-combustion route and annealed at 900 °C for ∼4 h. X-ray diffraction study confirms the tetragonal scheelite type of CaMoO4 phase. Low voltage cathodoluminescent (CL) measurement were performed for Gd(3+) (0 and 10 at.%) co-doped CaMoO4:Eu as a function of accelerating voltage and filament current. CL studies confirm that Gd(3+) co-doped CaMoO4:Eu has a visible emission peak centered at ∼615 nm and a broad host emission band in the range 380-550 nm. Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity diagram co-ordinates of Gd(3+) co-doped CaMoO4:Eu are found to be in reddish orange region as was observed through photoluminescence and CL spectra.

Tryptophan probes reveal residue-specific phospholipid interactions of apolipoprotein C-III

Apolipoproteins are essential human proteins for lipid metabolism. Together with phospholipids, they constitute lipoproteins, nm to μm sized particles responsible for transporting cholesterol and triglycerides throughout the body. To investigate specific protein-lipid interactions, we produced and characterized three single-Trp containing apolipoprotein C-III (ApoCIII) variants (W42 (W54F/W65F), W54 (W42F/W65F), W65 (W42F/W54F)). Upon binding to phospholipid vesicles, wild-type ApoCIII adopts an α-helical conformation (50% helicity) as determined by circular dichroism spectroscopy with an approximate apparent partition constant of 3×10(4) M(-1). Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements reveal distinct residue-specific behaviors with W54 experiencing the most hydrophobic environment followed by W42 and W65. Interestingly, time-resolved anisotropy measurements show a converse trend for relative Trp mobility with position 54 being the least immobile. To determine the relative insertion depths of W42, W54, and W65 in the bilayer, fluorescence quenching experiments were performed using three different brominated lipids. W65 had a clear preference for residing near the headgroup while W54 and W42 sample the range of depths ~8-11 Å from the bilayer center. On average, W54 is slightly more embedded than W42. Based on Trp spectral differences between ApoCIII binding to phospholipid vesicles and sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles, we suggest that ApoCIII adopts an alternate helical conformation on the bilayer which could have functional implications.

Dielectric properties of cereals at frequencies useful for processes with microwave heating

Dielectric properties of barley, corn (white and yellow), sorghum, and wheat at microwave frequencies for heating purpose were analyzed. Properties were determined at 915, 2450 and 5800 MHz with the free space transmission method in the cereals at 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 °C. ε´ and ε"of all the cereals decreased with increasing frequency. ε´ slightly increased with temperature, while ε "remained practically constant for all the cereals in the temperature range from 20 to 60 °C. Penetration depth decreased with increasing frequency for all the samples, and increased with increasing temperature at 915 MHz, except for barley. These results are useful for further microwave heating applications for the studies on cereals.

Evaluation of penetration depth of 2% chlorhexidine digluconate into root dentinal tubules using confocal laser scanning microscope

OBJECTIVES

This study evaluated the penetration depth of 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) into root dentinal tubules and the influence of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty freshly extracted anterior teeth were decoronated and instrumented using Mtwo rotary files up to size 40, 4% taper. The samples were randomly divided into two groups (n = 10), that is, conventional syringe irrigation (CSI) and PUI. CHX was mixed with Rhodamine B dye and was used as the final irrigant. The teeth were sectioned at coronal, middle and apical levels and viewed under CLSM to record the penetration depth of CHX. The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests.

RESULTS

The mean penetration depths of 2% CHX in coronal, middle and apical thirds were 138 µm, 80 µm and 44 µm in CSI group, respectively, whereas the mean penetration depths were 209 µm, 138 µm and 72 µm respectively in PUI group. Statistically significant difference was present between CSI group and PUI group at all three levels (p < 0.01 for coronal third and p < 0.001 for middle and apical thirds). On intragroup analysis, both groups showed statistically significant difference among three levels (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Penetration depth of 2% CHX into root dentinal tubules is deeper in coronal third when compared to middle and apical third. PUI aided in deeper penetration of 2% CHX into dentinal tubules when compared to conventional syringe irrigation at all three levels.

Assessment of cisplatin concentration and depth of penetration in human lung tissue after hyperthermic exposure

OBJECTIVES

The effects of cisplatin on the lung parenchyma during hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy perfusion have not been analysed in detail. The objective of this study was to evaluate both the concentration and depth of the penetration of cisplatin in human lung tissue after hyperthermic exposure under ex vivo conditions.

METHODS

This experimental study was approved by the local ethics committee. Twelve patients underwent pulmonary wedge resections after elective thoracic lobectomies were performed (resected lobe), and the lung tissue (approximately 1-2 cm(3)) was incubated (in vitro) with cisplatin (0.05 mg/ml; 60 min, 42°C). Subsequent tissue beds (depth, 0.5 mm; median weight, 70-92 mg) were prepared from the outside to the middle, and the amount of cisplatin per tissue weight was analysed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Afterwards, the penetration of cisplatin depth was calculated and related to the different concentrations per tissue.

RESULTS

Cisplatin penetrated into the human lung tissue after ex vivo hyperthermic exposure. The median amount of platinum [nmol cisplatin/g lung tissue] decreased significantly (P ≤ 0.05) depending on the penetration depth: 32 nmol/g (1 mm), 20 nmol/g (2 mm) and 6.8 nmol/g (4 mm). The calculated median concentrations of cisplatin (µg/ml) were 2.4 µg/ml (1 mm), 1.4 µg/ml (2 mm) and 0.5 µg/ml (4 mm), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Under ex vivo hyperthermic conditions, cisplatin diffused into human lung tissue. The median penetration depth of the cisplatin was approximately 3-4 mm. The penetration of cisplatin into lung tissue may affect the local therapy of residual tumour cells on the lung surface using hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy perfusion in patients with malignant pleural tumours.

Effect of marination in gravy on the radio frequency and microwave processing properties of beef

Dielectric properties (the dielectric constant (ε') and the dielectric loss factor (ε″)) and the penetration depth of raw eye of round beef Semitendinosus muscle, raw beef marinated in gravy, raw beef cooked in gravy, and gravy alone were determined as a function of the temperature (20-130 °C) and frequency (27-1,800 MHz). Both ε' and ε″ values increased as the temperature increased at low frequencies (27 and 40 MHz). At high frequencies (915 and 1,800 MHz), ε' showed a 50 % decrease while ε″ increased nearly three fold with increasing temperature in the range from 20 to 130 °C. ε' increased gradually while ε″ increased five fold when the temperature increased from 20 to 130 °C. Both ε' and ε″ of all samples decreased with increase in frequency. Marinating the beef in gravy dramatically increased the ε″ values, particularly at the lower frequencies. Power penetration depth of all samples decreased with increase temperature and frequency. These results are expected to provide useful data for modeling dielectric heating processes of marinated muscle food.

Membrane bound α-synuclein is fully embedded in the lipid bilayer while segments with higher flexibility remain

Cellular pathways involving α-synuclein (αS) seem to be causative for development of Parkinson's disease. Interactions between αS and lipid membranes appear to be important for the physiological function of the protein and influence the pathological aggregation of αS leading to the formation of amyloid plaques. Upon membrane binding the unstructured αS folds into amphipathic helices. In our work we characterized the penetration depth and probed the local environment of Trp-residues introduced along the αS sequence. We could show that while the entire helix is well embedded in the lipid bilayer, segments with a shallower penetration and supposable higher flexibility exist.
