Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising large-scale energy storage devices because of their low cost and high safety. However, owing to the high activity of H2O molecules in electrolytes, hydrogen evolution reaction and side reactions usually take place on Zn anodes. Herein, additive-free PCA-Zn electrolyte with capacity of suppressing the activity of free and solvated H2O molecules was designed by selecting the cationophilic and solventophilic anions. In such electrolyte, contact ion-pairs and solvent-shared ion-pairs were achieved even at low concentration, where PCA- anions coordinate with Zn2+ and bond with solvated H2O molecules. Simultaneously, PCA- anions also induce the construction of H-bonds between free H2O molecules and them. Therefore, the activity of free and solvated H2O molecules is effectively restrained. Furthermore, since PCA- anions possess a strong affinity with metal Zn, they can also adsorb on Zn anode surface to protect Zn anode from the direct contact of H2O molecules, inhibiting the occurrence of water-triggered side reactions. As a result, plating/stripping behavior of Zn anodes is highly reversible and the coulombic efficiency can reach to 99.43 % in PCA-Zn electrolyte. To illustrate the feasibility of PCA-Zn electrolyte, the Zn||PANI full batteries were assembled based on PCA-Zn electrolyte and exhibited enhanced cycling performance.

Abstract
Minerals form in natural systems from solutions with varying ratios of their lattice ions, yet non-stoichiometric conditions have generally been overlooked in investigations of new formation (nucleation) of ionic crystals. Here, we investigated the influence of cation:anion ratio in the solution on the initial steps of nucleation by studying positively and negatively charged triple ion complexes and subsequent particle size evolution. Our model systems are carbonates and sulfates of calcium and barium, as it was recently shown that solution stoichiometry affects the timing and rate of their nucleation. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and dynamic light scattering (DLS) flow experiments show that nucleation correlates with the stability and lifetime of the initial complexes, which were significantly impacted by the cation:anion stoichiometry and ion type. Specifically,B a S O 4 2 2 - ${{\rm B}{\rm a}{\left({{\rm S}{\rm O}}_{4}\right)}_{2}^{2-}}$ was found to have higher association constants and its lifetime was twofold longer thanB a 2 S O 4 2 + ${{{\rm B}{\rm a}}_{2}{{\rm S}{\rm O}}_{4}^{2+}}$ . Similar trends were observed forB a C O 3 ${{{\rm B}{\rm a}{\rm C}{\rm O}}_{3}}$ andC a S O 4 ${{{\rm C}{\rm a}{\rm S}{\rm O}}_{4}}$ . Contrastingly, forC a C O 3 ${{{\rm C}{\rm a}{\rm C}{\rm O}}_{3}}$ ,C a C O 3 2 2 - ${{\rm C}{\rm a}{\left({{\rm C}{\rm O}}_{3}\right)}_{2}^{2-}}$ was found to have lower association constants and its lifetime was shorter thanC a 2 C O 3 2 + ${{{\rm C}{\rm a}}_{2}{{\rm C}{\rm O}}_{3}^{2+}}$ . These trends in stability and lifetime follow the same asymmetrical behaviour as observed experimentally for particle formation using techniques like DLS. This suggests a causal relationship between the stability and lifetime of the initial charged complexes and the nucleation under non-stoichiometric conditions.

Abstract
In this study of the thermodynamics of benzene association in water, we show that although the potential energy and enthalpy play an important role in the association of benzene dimers, they do not determine the relative orientation of these molecules on close contact in solution. We observe a large variation in the configurations that contribute to the vacuum (i.e., solvent-free) minimum free energy wells of the benzene contact pair. In water, fewer and smaller minimum free energy wells are observed. On examination, we find that fewer close contact configurations of benzene dimers populate these wells and that they are more energetically distinct from each other (compared with the vacuum case). The edge-over-edge configuration is most likely in solution and appears to evolve from the entropically favored side-by-side solvent shared configuration. Therefore, the relative orientation of the benzene molecules (i.e., parallel displaced, T-shaped, etc.) on association is a result of maximizing the contribution of the benzene-benzene entropy of association, to the solution free energy.
