Abstract
![]()
Since many factors influence the
coordination around a metal center,
steric and electronic effects of the ligands mainly determine the
connectivity and, thus, the final arrangement. This is emphasized
on Hg(II) centers, which have a zero point stabilization energy and,
thus, a flexible coordination environment. Therefore, the unrestricted
Hg(II) geometry facilitates the predominance of the ligands during
the structural inception. Herein, we synthesized and characterized
a series of six Hg(II) complexes with general formula (Hg(Pip)2(dPy)) (Pip = piperonylate, dPy = 3-phenylpyridine (3-phpy)
(1), 4-phenylpyridine (4-phpy) (2), 2,2′-bipyridine
(2,2′-bipy) (3), 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen)
(4), 2,2′:6′,2′-terpyridine (terpy)
(5), or di(2-picolyl)amine (dpa) (6)). The
elucidation of their crystal structures revealed the arrangement of
three monomers (3, 5, and 6), one dimer (4), and two coordination polymers (1 and 2) depending on the steric requirements
of the dPy and predominance of the ligands. Besides, the study of
their photophysical properties in solution supported by TD-DFT calculations
enabled us to understand their electronic effects and the influence
of the structural arrangement on them. Six Hg(II)
complexes containing 1,3-benzodioxole-5-carboxylic
acid and pyridine derivatives bearing N-, N^N′-, and N^N^N-donor sites have been characterized
and their crystal structure elucidated. Steric crowding defined the
predominance of the linkers in the structural arrangement, varying
from monomers to coordination polymers. Their photophysical properties
were analyzed through experimental and TD-DFT calculations, identifying
the character and regions involved on each electronic transition.
In addition, seclusion of the HOMO from the LUMO defined them as appropriate
to selective band gap tuning.

Abstract
Silver cations were introduced in nanosized BEA-type zeolite containing organic template by ion-exchange followed by chemical reduction towards preparation of photoactive materials (Ag0 -BEA). The stabilization of highly dispersed Ag0 nanoparticles with a size of 1-2 nm in the BEA zeolite was revealed. The transient optical response of the Ag-BEA samples upon photoexcitation at 400 nm was studied by femtosecond absorption. The photodynamic of the hot electrons was found to depend on the sample preparation. The lifetime of the hot electrons in the Ag-BEA samples containing small Ag nanoparticles (1-2 nm) is significantly shortened in comparison to bear Ag nanoparticles with a size of 10 nm. While for the larger Ag nanoparticles, the energy absorbed in the conduction band is decaying by electron-phonon coupling into the metal lattice, the high surface-to-volume ratio of the small Ag nanoparticles favors the dissipation of the energy of the hot electrons from the metal nanoparticles (Ag0 ) towards the zeolitic micro-environment. This finding is encouraging for further applications of Ag-containing zeolites in photocatalysis and plasmonic chemistry.

Abstract
The ring-opening dynamics of perimidinespirocyclohexadienone derivatives has been studied by means of time-resolved spectroscopy in cyclohexane and acetonitrile solutions. It has been established that molecular isomerisation leading to the open isomer occurs against the background of the S1 -S0 internal conversion of the cyclic form. In addition, the features of the observed spectral changes in the cyclohexane made it possible to distinguish formation of the photoproduct in the T1 state and its relaxation via intersystem crossing to the singlet ground state. The corresponding assignments for transient absorption bands were performed on the basis of TD-DFT calculations.

Abstract
Time-resolved absorption spectroscopy measurements were performed to study the dynamics of photochromic 1,2-Bis(2,4-dimethylthiophene-3-yl)perfluoro-cyclopentene (DMTPF) in chloroform, including antiparallel conformer ring-closure reaction and parallel conformer photophysics. All characteristic times are given, discussed and compared to a previous publication concerning the close molecule substituted with phenyl rings. (Hamdi et al., PCCP, 2016). Apart from the expected photocyclization process, condensed ring by-product formation is observed and hypotheses concerning the origin of this by-product are presented.

Abstract
The excited state dynamics of constrained photochromic benzodithienylethenes were addressed by considering the bridging with polyether chains (from x = 4 to 6 units) at the ortho and meta positions of the aryl group, named DTE-ox and DTE-mx, via time-resolved absorption spectroscopy supported with (TD)-DFT calculations. The photochromic parameters and geometrical structures of these series are discussed. A novel photocyclization pathway via a triplet state, evidenced recently (Hamdi et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2016, 18, 28091-28100), is largely dependent on the length and the position of the polyether chain. For the first time, by comparing the two series, we revealed, for the DTE-ox series, an interconversion not only in the ground state but also between the triplet states of the anti-parallel and parallel open form conformers.

Abstract
An electronic spectral and photophysical characterization of three gold(I) complexes containing heterocyclic chromophores differing in the number and arrangement of pyridine rings (pyridine, bipyridine, and terpyridine, with the acronyms pD, bD, and tD respectively) was performed. Quantum yields of fluorescence, internal conversion and triplet state formation, together with the rate constants for singlet to triplet intersystem crossing, S1 ∼ ∼ ∼ S0 internal conversion and fluorescence were measured in order to equate the impact of fast triplet state formation on the amount of triplets formed. The results showed a correlation between the increase on the measured decay values of S1 (leading to the main formation of T1) and the increase in the charge transfer (CT) character of the lowest energy transition, as evaluated from the orthogonality of the frontier orbitals. The measured triplet state quantum yields range from ∼50-60% to 70%, whereas the intersystem crossing rate constants differ by almost 2 orders of magnitude, from 9.4 × 109 s-1 for tD to 8.1 × 1011 s-1 for bD. This constitutes an evidence for the existence of a correlation between the intersystem crossing and the internal conversion mechanisms.

Abstract
The photoswitching and competitive processes of the referent photochromic diarylethene derivative 1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (DTE) and a novel bridged analog DTE-m5 have been investigated by state-of-the-art TD-DFT calculations and ultrafast spectroscopy supported by advanced chemometric data treatments. Focusing on DTE, the overall deactivation pathway of both antiparallel (AP) and parallel (P) conformers of the open form (OF) (1 : 1 in solution) has been resolved and rationalized starting from the Franck-Condon (FC) region to the ground state recovery. For the photo-excited P conformer, after ultrafast relaxation (∼200 fs) towards the S1 relaxed state, an expected ISC occurred (55 ps) to produce a triplet state, 3P, the latter relaxing within 2.5 μs. Concerning the AP conformer, the photocyclization reaction is reported to proceed immediately (100 fs) starting from the FC region while the relaxed singlet state is populated in parallel. For the first time, we discovered that the latter state evolves through an unexpected ISC process (1 ps) giving rise to a second triplet state,3AP. For DTE-m5, by slightly constraining the molecule with the bridge, this triplet becomes reactive and participates in the formation of 10% of closed form (CF) probably through an adiabatic mechanism. Concerning the photoreversion, in accordance with the literature, we report on a two-step process, a 190 fs vibrational relaxation followed by a 6 ps ring-opening reaction. For the overall species at the singlet or triplet manifold, the use of advanced MCR-ALS allows us to obtain specific spectral signatures. This study is therefore a new step within the comprehension of DTE photochemistry.

Abstract
Using a combination of advanced DFT/TDDFT calculations together with ultrafast and stationary spectroscopies we have investigated the photochemistry and cationic complexation ability of 1-pyridinio-benzimidazolate (PyB) and analogs substituted by 15-aza-5-crown (PyB-Aza) or dimethyl-amino groups (PyB-DiMe). Focusing on PyB-Aza, the first aim was to assess the competitive complexation of the imidazole bridge vs. the macrocycle. In acetonitrile, it was found by absorption and emission that the imidazole moiety binds efficiently through lateral electrostatic interaction of high charge density cations and especially Ca(2+) to form a 1 : 1, metal : ligand (M : L) complex. Modulation of the complexation toward para substitution of the phenyl ring with a donor group is reported with values ranging from log K = 3.4 to 6.8. Complexation values are properly predicted by DFT calculations. From a photochemical point of view, for the same series, the trend is parallel to the rate of the photo-release process, found to be less than 200 femtosecond (fs), the fastest photorelease characteristic time reported so far. Unlike photoinduced charge transfer molecules linked with an aza-crown group, the mechanism appears simpler with no participation of loose complexes due to the macrocavity effect. Relaxation mechanisms after cation ejection are discussed as well. Finally, even if any photoinduced translocation of cation is reported for the PyB-Aza molecule between two complexation sites, a discussion about the use of betaine pyridinium as a molecular tool for the smart manipulation of cation systems is initiated.

Abstract
We present a new development for pump-probe absorption spectroscopy that allows the simultaneous measurement from the green part of the visible spectrum (510 nm) over the whole near-infrared range to >1600 nm, corresponding to 0.77-2.40 eV. The system is based on a sub-picosecond supercontinuum generated in bulk material used as a broadband probe that is dispersed with a custom-made prism spectrometer and detected by an InGaAs array with extended sensitivity to the visible. Two versions, with and without probe referencing, are implemented for operation at laser repetition rates of a few hertz and kilohertz, respectively. After presentation of the optical configuration of the spectrometer, its performance is characterized and further illustrated on two time scales, with the ultrafast radiolysis of isopropanol induced by a picosecond electron pulse and with the instantaneous response of a BK7 plate to a femtosecond light pulse. The photophysics of the dye IR-140 is resolved from the femto- to picosecond regime. Stable and easy day-to-day routine use of the spectrometer also can be achieved in non-optical laboratory surroundings. For operation in a hazardous environment, the optical probe beams can be transported to the detector unit by optical fibers.

Abstract
The reaction of intracomplex proton transfer (44BPY-....HO-H) → 44BPYH. + OH- that follows the photoreduction of 4,4’-bipyridine (44BPY) into its anion radical 44BPY- in the presence of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) is investigated in acetonitrile-water mixtures by using picosecond transient absorption. The dependence of the appearance kinetics of the 44BPYH. radical on the water content reveals a highly diffusional proton transfer process that is controlled by the dynamics of solvation of the released hydroxide ion. The results are interpreted on the basis of a two-step mechanism where an intermediate solvation complex (44BPYH.)OH-(H2O)3 is formed first before evolving toward a final four-water hydration structure OH-(H2O)4.

Abstract
Photodynamics of 2-hydroxybenzylideneaniline (photochromic salicylidene aniline SAOH) and N-(2-methoxybenzylidene)aniline (SAOMe) are studied by steady state and transient optical spectroscopy in solution and gas phase at different excitation wavelengths (266, 355 and 390 nm). Two competitive processes are observed from the enol* excited state: on one hand a rotation to get a twisted-enol, and on the other hand an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) followed by a cis-trans isomerisation to get the trans-keto photochromic product. For the first time both processes are characterized at an ultrashort time scale for salicylidene aniline. Resolution of the spectrokinetic data is achieved by multivariate curve resolution and attribution of the intermediate species recovered is performed in comparison with the results obtained for SAOMe, which can only undergo enol rotational isomerisation. It shows that ESIPT and rotation to the twisted-enol for SAOH occur within 100 fs, as predicted by recent quantum dynamical simulations, with an efficiency ratio dependent on the excitation wavelength. Therefore a general photoinduced mechanism for salicylidene aniline is drawn.

Abstract
Femtosecond transient absorption and fluorescence upconversion experiments have been performed to investigate the photoinduced dynamics of the meta isomer of the green fluorescent protein chromophore, m-HBDI, and its O-methylated derivative, m-MeOBDI, in various solvent mixtures at neutral, acidic, and basic pH. The para isomer, p-HBDI, and its O- and N-methylated derivatives, p-MeOBDI and p-HBDIMe(+), were also studied for comparison. In all cases, fast quenching of the excited S1 state by internal conversion (IC) to the ground state was observed. In the para compounds, IC, presumably promoted by the internal twisting, arises in <1 ps. A similar process takes place in the meta compounds in nonaqueous solvents but with notably slower kinetics. In aqueous solutions, the meta compounds undergo ultrafast intermolecular excited-state proton transfer that competes with isomerization.

Abstract
The photoreduction of 4,4'-bipyridine (44BPY) by diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and triethylamine (TEA) is investigated by using picosecond transient absorption and time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy in various acetonitrile-water mixtures. The results are interpreted on the basis of a preferential solvation effect resulting from the presence of a specific interaction between 44BPY and water by hydrogen bonding. Below 10% water, the free 44BPY species is dominant and leads upon photoreduction to a contact ion pair that undergoes efficient intrapair proton transfer if TEA is the amine donor. Above 10% water, most of the 44BPY population is H-bonded and leads upon photoreduction to a hydrated ion pair in which the intrapair proton transfer is inhibited. Instead, the 44BPY(-*) species is protonated by water through the hydrogen bond with a rate constant that increases by more than 3 orders of magnitude on going from 10% to 100% water. The dependence of this rate constant on the solvent mixture composition suggests that the reaction of intracomplex proton transfer is controlled by the hydration of the residual OH(-) species by three molecules of water, leading to a trihydrated HO(-)(H(2)O)(3) species.

Abstract
The spectral changes as well as the reaction kinetics of the transient species of 4,4'-bipyridyl (4,4'-bpy) have been experimentally investigated by pulse radiolysis techniques up to 400 degrees C. The results show that the transient species such as OH adduct 4,4'-bpyOH*, monoprotonated electron adduct 4,4'-bpyH*, and doubly protonated electron adduct 4,4'-bpyH2+* have 15-20 nm blue shifts from room temperature to 400 degrees C. For a deaerated neutral solution of 4,4'-bpy in the presence of tert-butyl alcohol, ethanol, or NaCOOH, the doubly protonated electron adduct is the main transient species at room temperature. But at temperatures > 350 degrees C, a monoprotonated form, the N-hydro radical 4,4'-bpyH*, becomes predominant. Interestingly, at room temperature, CO2-* could not efficiently react with 4,4'-bpy, but the reaction was accelerated with increasing temperature; at 350 degrees C, this reaction completed within 2 mus. Using an alkaline solution (pH = 11.5) of 4,4'-bpy in the presence of tert-butyl alcohol, we studied the N-hydro radical 4,4'-bpyH* from room temperature to 400 degrees C at 25 MPa. An estimation of the temperature-dependent G(e(aq)-) at 25 MPa agrees with our previous result with methyl viologen as a scavenger.
