Reactions of NO+ in Heterogeneous Water Clusters

Intracluster reaction dynamics of NO+(H2O)n

Nitric oxide (NO) and NO-water clusters play crucial roles in the D-region of the atmosphere because it is postulated that NO+ reacts with H2O to produce nitrous acid (HONO) and H3O+. HONO is the major precursor of the hydroxyl radicals leading to the formation of secondary pollutants. The sources of atmospheric HONO, however, are not fully understood. Previously, the sequential H2O addition reaction, H2O + NO+(H2O)n, and the bi-molecular collision reaction, NO+ + (H2O)n, have been investigated by both experiments and theoretical calculations to determine the formation mechanism of HONO. However, the photo-reactions from NO(H2O)n neutral clusters were not considered for the formation mechanism of HONO. In this study, the intra-cluster reactions of NO+(H2O)n clusters, following ionization of the parent neutral cluster of NO(H2O)n, were investigated using the direct ab initio molecular dynamics method. When n = 4, [NO+(H2O)4]ver [vertical ionization state of NO(H2O)n] yielded HONO and hydrated H3O+ after the intra-cluster reaction, and the reaction time was calculated to be 150 fs. The reaction is expressed as [NO+(H2O)n]ver → HONO + H3O+(H2O)n-2 (reactive) (n > 3). Larger clusters of [NO+(H2O)n]ver (n = 5-8) also yield HONO. In contrast, in smaller clusters (n = 1-3), only solvent re-orientation around NO+ occurred after the ionization: [NO+(H2O)n]ver → NO+(H2O)n (solvent re-orientation) (n = 1-3). The hydration energy of H3O+, which depends on the cluster size (n), plays an important role in promoting the formation of HONO. The reaction mechanism is discussed based on theoretical results.

Noncovalent Interactions in Hydrated Nitrosonium Ion Clusters Mediated by Hydrogen-Bonded Water Networks

As important species in the D region of the ionosphere, hydrated nitrosonium ion clusters [NO⁺(H₂O)_n] are also archetypal and concise models to illustrate effects of different solvent shells. We have investigated noncovalent interactions in NO⁺(H₂O)₃ and NO⁺(H₂O)₄ isomers with high levels of ab initio and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) methods. On the basis of our computations, the exchange energies become much more repulsive, whereas the induction energies are significantly more attractive for the noncovalent interactions of NO⁺ with hydrogen-bonded water chains. Combined with analyses of the electron densities for the NO⁺(H₂O)₃ and NO⁺(H₂O)₄ isomers, we propose that the counteracting effect of the exchange and induction energies could be deemed as an index for the tendency to form the HO-NO covalent bond. Moreover, we have also found that the third-order induction terms are very important to evaluate reasonable charge transfer energies with the SAPT computations.

Reaction Dynamics of NO+ with Water Clusters

The reaction of NO⁺ with water molecules plays a crucial role in the D-region of the atmosphere because the reaction provides nitrous acid (HONO) and protonated water species (H₃O⁺). In this study, the reaction of NO⁺ with water clusters, NO⁺ + (H₂O)_n (n = 1-7), was investigated by means of the direct ab initio molecular dynamics method to elucidate the reaction mechanism of NO⁺ in the atmosphere from a theoretical viewpoint. At n = 1 and 2, the reaction of NO⁺ with (H₂O)_n led to the formation of a complex: NO⁺ + (H₂O)_n → NO⁺(H₂O)_n (n = 1 and 2). At n = 3, the formation channel of HONO was open, and HONO was formed according to NO⁺ + (H₂O)_n → HONO---H⁺(H₂O)_n-1 (n = 3), through which H₃O⁺ was also formed as H⁺(H₂O)₂. However, the HONO formation efficiency was significantly low for n = 3. In large clusters with n = 4-7, the HONO formation channel became the main channel, and the dissociation of HONO from the HONO--H⁺(H₂O)_n-1 complex occurred in part: NO⁺ + (H₂O)_n → HONO---H⁺(H₂O)_n-1 → HONO + H⁺(H₂O)_n-1. The energetics and reaction mechanism were discussed on the basis of theoretical results.

Mass spectrometry of aerosol particle analogues in molecular beam experiments

Nanometer-size particles such as ultrafine aerosol particles, ice nanoparticles, water nanodroplets, etc, play an important, however, not yet fully understood role in the atmospheric chemistry and physics. These species are often composed of water with admixture of other atmospherically relevant molecules. To mimic and investigate such particles in laboratory experiments, mixed water clusters with atmospherically relevant molecules can be generated in molecular beams and studied by various mass spectrometric methods. The present review demonstrates that such experiments can provide unprecedented details of reaction mechanisms, and detailed insight into the photon-, electron-, and ion-induced processes relevant to the atmospheric chemistry. After a brief outline of the molecular beam preparation, cluster properties, and ionization methods, we focus on the mixed clusters with various atmospheric molecules, such as hydrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid clusters, N_x O_y and halogen-containing molecules with water. A special attention is paid to their reactivity and solvent effects of water molecules on the observed processes.

Low-temperature fast atom bombardment mass spectra of frozen nitric acid-water solution

Positive ion low-temperature fast atom bombardment mass spectra of the frozen nitric acid-water system with an initial components ratio which provides preferential formation of the crystalline hydrate of the nitric acid trihydrate, HNO(3).3H(2)O, are reported. A complicated spectral pattern is created by a number of cluster sets which, on the basis of discussion, were attributed to (H(2)O)(n). NO(+) (n = 1-3), (H(2)O)(n).NO(2)(+) (n = 1, 2), (HNO(3))(m). (H(2)O)(n).H(+) (m = 1-5 and n variable) and (H(2)O)(n).H(+) (n = 1-9). Similarities between the size-dependent behavior of hydrate clusters of nitrogen oxides and nitric acid obtained with sputtering from the solid in the present low-temperature experiments and under gas-phase conditions (reported earlier in the literature) were revealed. A suggestion as to possibility of the yield of the cluster ions sputtered due to energetic particle collision with the frozen grains of water ice and nitric acid trihydrate, present in the atmosphere, to the total ionic population of the atmosphere is discussed.
