Abstract
Heterogeneous catalysts undergo thermal- and/or adsorbate-induced dynamic changes under reaction conditions, which consequently modify their catalytic behavior. Hence, it is increasingly crucial to characterize the properties of a catalyst under reaction conditions through the so-called "operando" approach. Operando IR spectroscopy is probably one of the most ubiquitous and versatile characterization methods in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, but its potential in identifying adsorbate- and thermal-induced phenomena is often overlooked in favor of other less accessible methods, such as XAS spectroscopy and high-resolution microscopy. Without detracting from these techniques, and while aware of the enormous value of a multitechnique approach, the purpose of this Review is to show that IR spectroscopy alone can provide relevant information in this field. This is done by discussing a few selected case studies from our own research experience, which belong to the categories of both "single-site"- and nanoparticle-based catalysts.

Abstract
This contribution aims at analysing the current understanding about the influence of Al distribution, zeolite topology, ligands/reagents and oxidation state on ions mobility in Cu-zeolites, and its relevance toward reactivity of the metal sites. The concept of Cu mobilization has been originally observed in the presence of ammonia, favouring the activation of oxygen by formation of NH3 oxo-bridged complexes in zeolites and opening a new perspective about the chemistry in single-site zeolite-based catalysts, in particular in the context of the NH3-mediated Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO x (NH3-SCR) processes. A different mobility of bare Cu+/Cu2+ ions has been documented too, showing for Cu+ a better mobilization than for Cu2+ also in absence of ligands. These concepts can have important consequences for the formation of Cu-oxo species, active and selective in other relevant reactions, such as the direct conversion of methane to methanol. Here, assessing the structure, the formation pathways and reactivity of Cu-oxo mono- or multimeric moieties still represents a challenging playground for chemical scientists. Translating the knowledge about Cu ions mobility and redox properties acquired in the context of NH3-SCR reaction into the field of direct conversion of methane to methanol can have important implications for a better understanding of transition metal ions redox properties in zeolites and for an improved design of catalysts and catalytic processes.

Abstract
Cu-exchanged zeolites are widely studied materials because of their importance in industrial energetic and environmental processes. Cu redox speciation lies at the center of many of these processes but is experimentally difficult to investigate in a quantitative manner with regular laboratory equipment. This work presents a novel technique for this purpose that exploits the selective adsorption of CO over accessible Cu(I) sites to quantify them. In particular, isothermal volumetric adsorption measurements are performed at 50 °C on a series of opportunely pre-reduced Cu-ZSM-5 to assess the relative fraction of Cu(I); the setup is fairly simple and only requires a regular volumetric adsorption apparatus to perform the actual measurement. Repeatability tests are carried out on the measurement and activation protocols to assess the precision of the technique, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) obtained is less than 5%. Based on the results obtained for these materials, the same CO adsorption protocol is studied for the sample using infrared spectroscopy, and a good correlation is found between the results of the volumetric measurements and the absorbance of the peak assigned to the Cu(I)-CO adducts. A linear model is built for this correlation, and the molar attenuation coefficient is obtained, allowing for spectrophotometric quantification. The good sensitivity of the spectrophotometric approach and the precision and simplicity of the volumetric approach form a complementary set of tools to quantitatively study Cu redox speciation in these materials at the laboratory scale, allowing for a wide range of Cu compositions to be accurately investigated.

Abstract
This review addresses the most relevant aspects of vibrational spectroscopies (IR, Raman and INS) applied to zeolites and zeotype materials. Surface Brønsted and Lewis acidity and surface basicity are treated in detail. The role of probe molecules and the relevance of tuning both the proton affinity and the steric hindrance of the probe to fully understand and map the complex site population present inside microporous materials are critically discussed. A detailed description of the methods needed to precisely determine the IR absorption coefficients is given, making IR a quantitative technique. The thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process that can be extracted from a variable-temperature IR study are described. Finally, cutting-edge space- and time-resolved experiments are reviewed. All aspects are discussed by reporting relevant examples. When available, the theoretical literature related to the reviewed experimental results is reported to support the interpretation of the vibrational spectra on an atomic level.

Abstract
Cationic copper(I) dicarbonyl complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, SIPr and IPr*, have been synthesized. [(SIPr)Cu(CO)(2)][SbF(6)] and [(IPr*)Cu(CO)(2)][SbF(6)] have a trigonal planar, three-coordinate copper atom with an average Cu-CO distance of 1.915 Å and display C-O stretching frequencies higher than that of the free CO (2143 cm(-1)). The high CO stretching frequencies suggest that the Cu(I)-CO interaction in these cationic adducts is dominated by electrostatic and OC → Cu σ-donor components. [(SIPr)Cu(CO)(2)][SbF(6)] and [(IPr*)Cu(CO)(2)][SbF(6)] readily form the corresponding [(SIPr)Cu(CO)(H(2)O)][SbF(6)] and [(IPr*)Cu(CO)(H(2)O)][SbF(6)] with loss of a CO even with traces of water, but they can be converted back to the dicarbonyl adducts using excess CO. The synthesis and structure of [(IPr*)Cu(H(2)O)][SbF(6)] are also reported. It is a two-coordinate copper adduct with a Cu-O distance of 1.874(2) Å. It reacts with excess CO to form [(IPr*)Cu(CO)(2)][SbF(6)].

Abstract
The present work highlights recent advances in elucidating the methane oxidation mechanism of inorganic Cu-ZSM-5 biomimic and in identifying the reactive intermediates that are involved. Such molecular understanding is important in view of upgrading abundantly available methane, but also to comprehend the working mechanism of genuine Cu-containing oxidation enzymes.

Abstract
This critical review describes the reactivity of heterogeneous catalysts from the point of view of four simple, but essential for Chemistry, molecules (namely dihydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide and ethylene) that are considered as probes or as reactants in combination with "in situ" controlled temperature and pressure Infrared spectroscopy. The fundamental properties of H(2), CO, NO and C(2)H(4) are shortly described in order to justify their different behaviour in respect of isolated sites in different environments, extended surfaces, clusters, crystalline or amorphous materials. The description is given by considering some "key studies" and trying to evidence similarities and differences among surfaces and probes (572 references).

Abstract
The structure and stability of nitrosyl complexes formed in Cu-FER zeolite were investigated using a periodic DFT model. The reliability of both DFT methods and cluster models when describing the Cu(+) interaction with NO molecules was examined. The relative stabilities of mononitrosyl complexes on various Cu(+) sites in Cu-FER are governed by the deformation energy of the particular site. Three types of dinitrosyl complexes with different coordination on the Cu(+) cation were identified: (i) four-fold tetrahedral, (ii) four-fold square-planar and (iii) three-fold trigonal-planar complexes. The most stable dinitrosyl complex, formed when the two NO molecules interact with Cu(+)via the N atom, has a tetrahedral coordination on Cu(+). The cyclic adsorption complex, having a square-planar arrangement of ligands on Cu(+) and interaction via O atoms, is only about 10 kJ mol(-1) less stable than the N-down dinitrosyl complex. This cyclic dinitrosyl complex is suggested to be the key intermediate in the deNO(x) process taking place in Cu-zeolites.

Abstract
Among microporous systems metal organic frameworks are considered promising materials for molecular adsorption. In this contribution infrared spectroscopy is successfully applied to highlight the positive role played by coordinatively unsaturated Cu2+ ions in HKUST-1, acting as specific interaction sites. A properly activated material, obtained after solvent removal, is characterized by a high fraction of coordinatively unsaturated Cu2+ ions acting as preferential adsorption sites that show specific activities towards some of the most common gaseous species (NO, CO2, CO, N2 and H2). From a temperature dependent IR study, it has been estimated that the H2 adsorption energy is as high as 10 kJ mol(-1). A very complex spectral evolution has been observed upon lowering the temperature. A further peculiarity of this material is the fact that it promotes ortho-para conversion of the adsorbed H2 species.

Abstract
The preferred Cu(+) sites and formation of mono-, di-, and tricarbonyl complexes in the Cu-FER were investigated at the periodic density functional theory level and by means of FTIR spectroscopy. The site-specificity of adsorption enthalpies of CO on Cu-FER and of vibrational frequencies of polycarbonyl complexes were investigated for various Cu(+) sites in Cu-FER. Large changes in the Cu(+) interaction with the zeolite framework were observed upon the formation of carbonyl complexes. The dicarbonyl complexes formed on Cu(+) in the main channel or on the intersection of the main and perpendicular channels are stable and both, adsorption enthalpies and CO stretching frequencies are not site-specific. The fraction of Cu(+) ions in the FER cage, that cannot form dicarbonyl can be determined from IR spectra (about 7% for the Cu-FER with Si/Al = 27.5 investigated here). The tricarbonyl complexes can be formed at the Cu(+) ions located at the 8-member ring window at the intersection of main and perpendicular channel. The stability of tricarbonyl complexes is very low (DeltaH degrees (0 K)>or=-4 kJ mol(-1)).

Abstract
Interactions of the CO and NO molecules with the Cu(II) and Cu(I) isolated sites on the amorphous silica surface are investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods within the finite cluster model approach. The clusters of silica of increasing nT size (T = Si) are used, with n from 2 to 6. The Cu(II) sites are characterized by calculated g-tensors and hyperfine coupling constants (HFCCs) and compared with experiment. On this basis, the three-coordinated complexes are the most plausible. Due to the charge transfer from the silica "ligand", the metal charge shrinks and the spin density is distributed over silanol and siloxy groups up to 50%. The reduced sites are exclusively two-coordinated. Strong interaction of CO with Cu(I)-nT sites (31-39 kcal/mol) gives rise to the formation of carbonyl adducts with planar coordination around copper. The population of the ligand pi system shifts downward the stretching frequency in agreement with experiment. Reaction with a second CO molecule gives a geminal dicarbonyl of very uniform structure independent of the site. Carbonyl complexes with Cu(II) are less stable and of tetrahedral coordination of the metal. Accumulation of the positive charge on the complex along with sigma overlap with d orbitals locates the calculated CO stretching frequency above free molecule value. NO molecule is preferably bound to the Cu(II)-nT sites, forming a tetrahedral complex with tilted adsorbate and NO stretching frequency blue-shifted with respect to the free molecule value. The full set of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters and vibrational frequencies for the copper(I) mononitrosyl, {CuNO}(11), though not observed experimentally, are predicted and compared to the same magnetophore inside the ZSM-5 zeolite. The interaction energies show that in the CO/NO reaction mixture adsorption is selective and allows discrimination between Cu(I) and Cu(II) sites. However, for the Cu(I) complex, formation of mixed-ligand structures of the {Cu(CO)(NO)}(11) type is possible.

Abstract
Periodic DFT and combined quantum mechanics/interatomic potential function (QM-pot) models were used to describe the interaction of CO with the Cu+ sites in FER. The CO stretching frequencies were calculated using omega(CO)(CCSD(T))/r(CO)(DFT) scaling method relating frequencies determined using a high-level quantum-chemical (coupled clusters) method for simple model carbonyls to CO bond lengths calculated using periodic DFT and QM-pot methods for the Cu+-zeolite system. Both periodic DFT and QM-pot models together with omega(CO)/r(CO) scaling describe the CO stretching dynamics with the "near spectroscopic accuracy", giving nu(CO) = 2156 cm(-1) in excellent agreement with experimental data. Calculations for various Cu+ sites in FER show that both types of Cu+ sites in FER (channel-wall sites and intersection sites) have the same CO stretching frequencies. Thus, the CO stretching frequencies are not site-specific in the CO/Cu+/FER system. The convergence of the results with respect to the model size was analyzed. When the same exchange-correlation functional is used the adsorption energies from periodic DFT and QM-pot are in good agreement (about 2 kcal/mol difference) but substantially larger than those of the experiment. The adsorption energy calculated with the B3LYP functional agrees with available experimental data. The overestimation of the adsorption energy in DFT calculations (periodic or QM-pot) is related to a red-shift of the CO stretching mode, both result from an underestimation of the HOMO(5sigma)-LUMO(2pi) gap of CO and the consequent overestimation of the Cu(+)(d)-CO(2pi*) back-donation. For the adsorption energy, this can be overcome by the use of hybrid B3LYP exchange-correlation functional. For the frequency calculations, the DFT problem can be overcome by the use of the omega(CO)(CCSD(T))/r(CO)(DFT) correlation.
