Abstract
While host/guest interactions are widely used to control molecular assembly on surfaces, quantitative information on the effect of surface chemistry on their efficiency is lacking. To address this question, we combined electrochemical characterization with quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring to study host/guest interactions between surface-attached ferrocene (Fc) guests and soluble β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) hosts. We identified several parameters that influence the redox response, β-CD complexation ability, and repellent properties of Fc monolayers, including the method of Fc grafting, the linker connecting Fc with the surface, and the diluting molecule used to tune Fc surface density. The study on monovalent β-CD/Fc complexation was completed by the characterization of multivalent interactions between Fc monolayers and β-CD-functionalized polymers, with new insights being obtained on the interplay between the surface chemistry, binding efficiency, and reversibility under electrochemical stimulus. These results should facilitate the design of well-defined functional interfaces and their implementation in stimuli-responsive materials and sensing devices.

Abstract
Computationally and spectroscopically assisted analytical comparative investigation into the extraction of bisphenol A using three cyclodextrins, that is, α, β, and γ respectively, were performed. A simple, self-tailored μ-solid-phase extraction podium was used to extract bisphenol A from water samples, and high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet was used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of bisphenol A. Density functional theory first principle calculations, attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Fourier-transform Raman spectroscopy data supports the analytical selection of β-cyclodextrin as the adsorbent for bisphenol A extraction. Analytical optimization of various parameters including sample volume, sample pH, eluting solvent and its volume was performed to discover the most proper conditions for maximum extraction. Under the optimized conditions, a limit of detection value of 0.70 ng/ml and a limit of quantification value of 2.31 ng/ml was achieved with β-cyclodextrin, with recovery (%) values over 98.40-102.50 in real source water samples. Overall, well assisted by comprehensive computational and spectroscopic studies, a novel, simple, sensitive and economic analytical method was developed for the extraction of bisphenol A from source water using cyclodextrin.

Abstract
In this study, we demonstrated a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution by using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)/β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) conjugate (SWCNT-CD) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The cyclic voltammetry results show that the modified GCE exhibits strong catalytic activity toward the oxidation of BPA with a well-defined cyclic voltammetric peak at 0.543 V. The response current exhibits a linear range between 10.8 nM and 18.5 μM with a high sensitivity (1256 μA mM(-1)). The detection limit of BPA is 1.0 nM (S/N=3). The enhanced performance of the fabricated sensor can be attributed to the combination of the excellent electrocatalytic properties of SWCNTs and the molecular recognition ability of β-CD. The sensor was successfully applied to determine BPA leached from real plastic samples with good recovery, ranging from 95% to 103%.

Abstract
This work presents an in situ study of the adsorption/desorption behavior of ferrocene(Fc)-functionalized linear polymers on a gold surface covered with beta-cyclodextrin(beta-CD)-modified self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The characterization of binary SAMs obtained with HS-(CH(2))(11)-EG(6)-N(3) and HS-(CH(2))(11)-EG(4)-OH (EG, ethylene glycol) was performed using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), cyclic voltammetry, and contact angle measurements. The functionalization of SAMs with beta-CD was made via the "click" reaction between the beta-CD monoalkyne derivative and azide groups exhibited by SAMs. The formation of the host-guest complex between SAM-beta-CD and Fc-derivatized polymers (chitosan (CHI) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)) was studied by QCM-D. The viscoelastic model of Voinova was used to fit QCM-D curves recorded during the adsorption and electrochemically controlled desorption of CHI-Fc and PAH-Fc on SAM-beta-CD. Using QCM-D coupled to cyclic voltammetry, we demonstrated that CHI-Fc and PAH-Fc can be successfully deposited on a SAM-beta-CD-coated gold surface forming a stable multivalent inclusion complex between Fc moieties of polymer and beta-CD cavities of SAM. We also showed that all specifically attached polymer chains can be detached from the SAM-beta-CD-coated gold surface by applying an electric field.

Abstract
The controlled fabrication of nanometer-scale objects is without doubt one of the central issues in current science and technology. However, existing fabrication techniques suffer from several disadvantages including size-restrictions and a general paucity of applicable materials. Because of this, the development of alternative approaches based on supramolecular self-assembly processes is anticipated as a breakthrough methodology. This review article aims to comprehensively summarize the salient aspects of self-assembly through the introduction of the recent challenges and breakthroughs in three categories: (i) types of self-assembly in bulk media; (ii) types of components for self-assembly in bulk media; and (iii) self-assembly at interfaces.

Abstract
Monolayers of di-6A,6B-deoxy-6-(4-pyridylmethyl)amino-gamma-cyclodextrin (gamma-CD-(py)2) have been formed on polycrystalline platinum electrodes and investigated using electrochemical and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The behavior of self-assembled monolayers of (gamma-CD-(py)2) alone, (gamma-CD-(py)2) backfilled with 1-nonanethiol, and 1-nonanethiol are reported. The potential dependence of the capacitance indicates that the film capacitance is higher for the backfilled CD layers than for 1-nonanethiol layers, most likely due to ion flux through the CD cavity. SERS spectra of the backfilled layer exhibit features associated with both pyridine-functionalized CD and alkane moieties. Investigations using [Fe(CN)6]4- as a solution-phase probe indicate that the backfilled CD-alkane thiol layer exhibits enhanced blocking properties compared to gamma-CD-(py)2 films alone. Complete blocking was achieved by a combination of backfilling and insertion of a high-affinity guest 1-adamantylamine into the cavity. Significantly, an electroactive guest with high affinity for gamma-CD, [Co(biptpy)2]2+, does not exhibit a redox response at the gamma-CD-(py)2 layer but molecular recognition is turned on by backfilling the CD layer with 1-nonanethiol molecules. This switching on of the electrochemical activity suggests that the CD hosts are initially inaccessible but reorientate upon backfilling, exposing the CD opening to solution and permitting a supramolecular host-guest complex to form. The binding of [Co(biptpy)2]2+ to gamma-CD in the backfilled monolayer depends on the bulk concentration of guest and is modeled by the Langmuir isotherm, yielding an association constant for the Co2+ state of 1.45 +/- 0.46 x 105 M-1 and a limiting surface coverage 1.49 +/- 0.25 x 10-11 mol cm-2. The surface coverage of the divalent state is higher than the trivalent state, reflecting the dynamic nature of the inclusion.

Abstract
The supramolecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of C(60) by thiolated beta-cyclodextrin (CD) on gold surfaces were constructed for the first time using C(60) monoanion. The results indicate that monoanionic C(60) plays a crucial role in the formation of the C(60)-containing self-assembled monolayers. The generation of C(60) monoanion and the formation process of C(60) SAMs were monitored in-situ by UV-visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The resulting C(60) SAMs were fully characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle measurements. After the immobilization of C(60) by the SAMs of thiolated beta-CD, the film thickness increased by approximately 1 nm from 0.8 to 1.8 nm as determined by SE, demonstrating the formation of the supramolecular self-assembled monolayers of thiolated beta-CD/C(60). The new C(60) SAMs exhibited one quasi-reversible redox couple at half wave potential of -0.57 V vs SCE in aqueous solution containing 0.1 M KCl. The surface coverage of C(60) on the gold surfaces was estimated to be 1.1 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2). The XPS showed the assembly of C(60) over the thiolated beta-CD SAMs. The surface hydrophobicity increased greatly upon the formation of the C(60)-containing SAMs as analyzed by water contact angle measurements. The results are in agreement with the formation of 1:1 complex of C(60) and cyclodextrin on gold surfaces, though it also reveals some non-homogeneous features of the monolayers.

Abstract
A dithiolated random copolymer with pendent phenylboronic acid residues [Cys-poly(3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid-co-N,N-dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide), Cys-poly(APBA-co-DMAPMA)] that shows the abilities of initiation, transfer, and termination (iniferter) was obtained by using a benzyl N,N-diethyldithiocarbamoyl (BDC) derivative. The obtained disulfide-carrying copolymer was accumulated on a colloidal gold-immobilized glass substrate, and the usefulness of the polymer brush as a sensing element for glycoproteins such as ovalbumin (OVA) was examined by UV-visible spectrophotometry with the help of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The sensor showed a concentration-dependent binding of OVA with a detection limit of 100 nM, and it had a very high stability at high ionic strength. The sensor chip could be used for a detection of another glycoprotein, avidin, as well. Furthermore, the binding of biotin-modified human serum albumin (biotinylated HSA) to the avidin-phenylboronic acid- (PBA-) carrying polymer brush complex and further specific binding of anti-HSA immunoglobulin G to the biotinylated HSA-avidin-PBA-carrying polymer brush ternary complex could clearly be observed. The polymer-brush-coated device examined here not only was useful as a simple sensor chip, but also is expected to open a new perspective on interfacial phenomena performed by various functional polymer brushes fixed to colloidal gold on glass substrates.

Abstract
Specific and reversible adhesion of a terminal thymine-functionalized polystyrene (PS-thymine) was demonstrated for a silicon surface with complementary adenine recognition sites. A novel adenine-containing triethoxysilane (ADPTES), which was suitable for covalent attachment to silanol containing surfaces, was synthesized in one step from adenine and 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane (IPTES). 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and fast atom bombardment mass spectroscopy confirmed the chemical structure, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy indicated the absence of any premature hydrolysis of the alkoxysilane derivative. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle measurements indicated the attachment of PS-thymine to silicon surfaces that were modified with a mixture of ADPTES and 3-mercaptopropyl triethoxysilane (MPTES). PS-thymine attachment to surfaces that were modified with only MPTES was not observed. The exclusive attachment of PS-thymine to an ADPTES/MPTES-modified surface confirmed hydrogen bonding-mediated adenine-thymine association to silicon surfaces containing a sufficiently low concentration of adenine recognition sites. Although PS-thymine attachment to the ADPTES/MPTES-modified surfaces was insensitive to THF rinsing, the PS-thymine was completely removed from the surface upon DMSO rinsing because of the disruption of adenine-thymine hydrogen bonding with a more polar aprotic solvent. PS-thymine was successfully reattached to the ADPTES/MPTES-modified surface following the DMSO rinse, demonstrating the solvato-reversible nature of the adenine-thymine association.

Abstract
The molecular recognition of various kinds of bisphenols (BPs) by a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of thiolated calix[6]arene on a gold electrode was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Based on the inhibitory effect of BPs on the inclusion of hydroquinone (HQ) as a probe bythe surface-confined calix[6]arene, the association constants (Kassoc) of BPs with the immobilized calix[6]arene were estimated. The Kassoc values for BPs with the SAM of thiolated hexasodium calix[6]arenehexasulfonic acid (thioSCX6) were much smaller than those in the free calix[6]arene derivative systems reported previously. The order of the Kassoc values for BPs with thioSCX6 was bisphenol A (BPA) > bisphenol S (BPS) > bisphenol B (BPB) > bisphenol F (BPF). The Kassoc values for BPA and BPS with thioSCX6 were larger than that for BPB, despite the larger hydrophobicity of BPB than that of BPA and BPS. This is probably because the inclusion phenomena in this system are not simply driven by the hydrophobic interaction, but are significantly affected by several steric and structural factors with immobilization of the host. Those are (1) a decrease in flexibility of the SCX6 cavity by the formation of SAM, (2) a decrease in inclusion ability of the SCX6 by the presence of Au surface just beneath it, and (3) a repulsion of hydrophobic guests bythe presence of sulfonate groups at the top of the SAM. Moreover, the association phenomena (adsorption and desorption processes) of a bisphenol with the SCX6 SAM were examined directly by using localized surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy.
