Theoretical and experimental study on phase transitions and mass fluxes of supersaturated water vapor onto different insoluble flat surfaces

Growth and wetting of water droplet condensed between micron-sized particles and substrate

We study heterogeneous condensation growth of water droplets on micron-sized particles resting on a level substrate. Through numerical simulations on equilibrium droplet profiles, we find multiple wetting states towards complete wetting of the particle. Specifically, a partially wetting droplet could undergo a spontaneous transition to complete wetting during condensation growth, for contact angles above a threshold minimum. In addition, we find a competitive wetting behavior between the particle and the substrate, and interestingly, a reversal of the wetting dependence on contact angles during late stages of droplet growth. Using quasi-steady assumption, we simulate a growing droplet under a constant condensation flux, and the results are in good agreement with our experimental observations. As a geometric approximation for particle clusters, we propose and validate a pancake model, and with it, show that a particle cluster has greater wetting tendency compared to a single particle. Together, our results indicate a strong interplay between contact angle, capillarity and geometry during condensation growth.

On the sintering of gold nanorod assemblies towards continuous networks

We present an approach for the coalescence and sintering of a gold nanorod assembly by thermal annealing at low temperatures. The sintering process initially takes place locally, resulting in aggregates which eventually grow into a continuous, percolating network structure.

Microdroplet growth mechanism during water condensation on superhydrophobic surfaces

By promoting dropwise condensation of water, nanostructured superhydrophobic coatings have the potential to dramatically increase the heat transfer rate during this phase change process. As a consequence, these coatings may be a facile method of enhancing the efficiency of power generation and water desalination systems. However, the microdroplet growth mechanism on surfaces which evince superhydrophobic characteristics during condensation is not well understood. In this work, the sub-10 μm dynamics of droplet formation on nanostructured superhydrophobic surfaces are studied experimentally and theoretically. A quantitative model for droplet growth in the constant base (CB) area mode is developed. The model is validated using optimized environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) imaging of microdroplet growth on a superhydrophobic surface consisting of immobilized alumina nanoparticles modified with a hydrophobic promoter. The optimized ESEM imaging procedure increases the image acquisition rate by a factor of 10-50 as compared to previous research. With the improved imaging temporal resolution, it is demonstrated that nucleating nanodroplets coalesce to create a wetted flat spot with a diameter of a few micrometers from which the microdroplet emerges in purely CB mode. After the droplet reaches a contact angle of 130-150°, its base diameter increases in a discrete steplike fashion. The droplet height does not change appreciably during this steplike base diameter increase, leading to a small decrease of the contact angle. Subsequently, the drop grows in CB mode until it again reaches the maximum contact angle and increases its base diameter in a steplike fashion. This microscopic stick-and-slip motion can occur up to four times prior to the droplet coalescence with neighboring drops. Lastly, the constant contact angle (CCA) and the CB growth models are used to show that modeling formation of a droplet with a 150° contact angle in the CCA mode rather than in the CB mode severely underpredicts both the drop formation time and the average heat transfer rate through the drop.

Sub-micrometer dropwise condensation under superheated and rarefied vapor condition

Phase change accompanying conversion of a saturated or superheated vapor in the presence of subcooled surfaces is one of the most common occurring phenomena in nature. The mode of phase change that follows such a transformation is dependent upon surface properties such as contact angle and thermodynamic conditions of the system. In present studies, an experimental approach is used to study the physics behind droplet growth on a partially wet surface. Superheated vapor at low pressures of 4-5 Torr was condensed on subcooled silicon surface with a static contact angle of 60° in the absence of noncondensable gases, and the condensation process was monitored using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) with sub-microscopic spatial resolution. The condensation process was analyzed in the form of size growth of isolated droplets before a coalescence event ended the regime of single droplet growth. Droplet growth obtained as a function of time reveals that the rate of growth decreases as the droplet increases in size. This behavior is indicative of an overall droplet growth law existing over larger time scales for which the current observations in their brief time intervals could be fitted. A theoretical model based on kinetic theory further support the experimental observations indicating a mechanism where growth occurs by interfacial mass transport directly on condensing droplet surface. Evidence was also found that establishes the presence of sub-microscopic droplets nucleating and growing between microscopic droplets for the partially wetting case.
