Forces between surfaces across nanoparticle solutions: role of size, shape, and concentration

One-dimensional necklace-like assemblies of inorganic nanoparticles: Recent advances in design, preparation and applications

One-dimensional (1D) necklace-like assembly of inorganic nanoparticles exhibits unique collective properties, which are critical to open up new and remarkable opportunities in the field of nanotechnology. This review focuses on the recent advances in the production of these types of assemblies employing two strategies: colloidal synthesis and self-assembly procedures. After a brief description of the forces guiding nanoparticles towards the assembly, the main features of both strategies are discussed. Examples of approaches, typically involved in colloidal synthesis, are highlighted. The peculiar properties of 1D nanostructures are strictly associated with the nanoparticle arrangement in the form of highly ordered assemblies, which are attained during the synthesis both in the solution and using a template, as well as under the action of an external force. The various 1D necklace-like structures, created through nanoparticle self-assembly, demonstrate aligned, oriented nanoparticle organization. Diverse nature, size and shape of preformed particles as building blocks, along with utilizing different linkers, templates or external field lead to fabrication of 1D chain nanostructures with properties responsible for their wide applications. The unique structure-property relationship, both in colloidal synthesis, and self-assembly, offers broad spectrum of 1D necklace-like nanostructure implementations, illustrated by their use in photonics, electronics, electrocatalysis, magnetics.

Probing the Self-Assembly and Nonlinear Friction Behavior of Confined Gold Nano-Particles

For the wide application of nanoparticles (NPs) (e.g., in nanotribology), it is of fundamental and practical importance to understand the self-assembly and lubrication behavior of confined NPs. In this work, a systematic study was conducted to probe the assembly and associated surface forces of spherical gold nanoparticles (Au NPs, diameter ∼5 nm) confined between pairs of mica (negatively charged) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane modified mica (APTES-mica, positively charged) surfaces using a surface forces apparatus (SFA) under aqueous conditions. It is observed that Au NPs were squeezed out of the confined gap between two mica surfaces during the loading process, resulting from the repulsive electric-double layer force. In contrast, multilayers of Au NPs were confined between two APTES-mica surfaces because of the attractive double-layer force between oppositely charged Au NPs and APTES-mica. Interestingly, the interaction between Au NPs and APTES-mica is stronger than the interactions between Au NPs, resulting in the rearrangement of the confined Au NPs under shearing. Importantly, a large friction coefficient (μ > 0.7) with unexpected nonlinear stick-slip friction was observed when sliding two APTES-mica surfaces with thin layers of Au NPs (∼20 nm) confined in between. The observed stick-slip motion could be explained by the velocity-dependent friction model where a critical shear velocity was required for transiting from stick-slip to smooth sliding. Our study provides useful information on the assembly and interaction forces of confined nanoparticles on charged surfaces, with implications for predicting the behaviors of NPs under confinement in various engineering applications.

Distinctive Stress-Stiffening Responses of Regenerated Silk Fibroin Protein Polymers under Nanoscale Gap Geometries: Effect of Shear on Silk Fibroin-Based Materials

Interfacial dynamics, assembly processes, and changes in nanostructures and mechanical properties of Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) proteins under varying degrees of nanoconfinement without and with lateral shear are investigated. When only compressive confinement forces were applied, SF proteins adsorbed on the surfaces experienced conformational changes following the Alexander-de Gennes theory of polymer brushes. By contrast, when SF proteins were exposed to a simultaneous nanoconfinement and shear, remarkable changes in interaction forces were observed, displaying the second order phase transitions, which are attributed to the formation of SF micelles and globular superstructural aggregates via hierarchical assembly processes. The resultant nanostructured SF aggregates show several folds greater elastic moduli than those of SF films prepared by drop-casting and compression-only and even degummed SF fibers. Such a striking improvement in mechanical strength is ascribed to a directional organization of β-sheet nanocrystals, effectively driven by nanoconfinement and shear stress-induced stiffing and ordering mechanisms.

Probing Molecular Interactions of Asphaltenes in Heptol Using a Surface Forces Apparatus: Implications on Stability of Water-in-Oil Emulsions

The behaviors and molecular interactions of asphaltenes are related to many challenging issues in oil production. In this study, the molecular interaction mechanism of asphaltenes in Heptol solvents of varying toluene/n-heptane ratio were directly measured using a surface forces apparatus (SFA). The results showed that the interactions between asphaltene surfaces gradually changed from pure repulsion to weak adhesion as the weight ratio of toluene (ω) in Heptol decreased from ω = 1 to 0. The measured repulsion was mainly due to the steric interactions between swelling asphaltene molecules and/aggregates. The micropipet technique was applied to test the stability of two water-in-oil emulsion droplets attached to glass pipettes. A computer-controlled 4-roll mill fluidic device was also built in-house to investigate the interaction of free-suspending water-in-oil emulsions under dynamic flow conditions. Both micropipet and 4-roll mill fluidic tests demonstrate that asphaltenes adsorbed at oil/water interfaces play a critical role in stabilizing the emulsion drops, in agreement with the repulsion measured between asphaltene surfaces in toluene using SFA, and that interfacial sliding or shearing is generally required to destabilize the protective interfacial apshaltene layers which facilitates the coalescence of emulsion drops. Our results provide insights into the fundamental understanding of molecular interaction mechanisms of asphaltenes in organic solvents and stabilization/destabilization behaviors of water-in-oil emulsions with asphaltenes.

Hydrodynamic confinement and capillary alignment of gold nanorods

Controlling the alignment and orientation of nanorods on various surfaces poses major challenges. In this work, we investigate hydrodynamic confinement and capillary alignment of gold nanorod assembly on chemically stripe-patterned substrates. The surface patterns consist of alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic micrometer wide stripes; a macroscopic wettability gradient enables controlling the dynamics of deposited suspension droplets. We show that drying of residual liquid on the hydrophilic stripes gives rise to spatially localized deposition and alignment of the nanorods. Moreover, a universal relation between the extent of order within the single layers of nanoparticles and the lateral dimension of the deposits is presented and discussed.

Understanding mechanisms of asphaltene adsorption from organic solvent on mica

The adsorption process of asphaltene onto molecularly smooth mica surfaces from toluene solutions of various concentrations (0.01-1 wt %) was studied using a surface forces apparatus (SFA). Adsorption of asphaltenes onto mica was found to be highly dependent on adsorption time and asphaltene concentration of the solution. The adsorption of asphaltenes led to an attractive bridging force between the mica surfaces in asphaltene solution. The adsorption process was identified as being controlled by the diffusion of asphaltenes from the bulk solution to the mica surface with a diffusion coefficient on the order of 10(-10) m(2)/s at room temperature, depending on the asphaltene bulk concentration. This diffusion coefficient corresponds to a hydrodynamic molecular radius of approximately 0.5 nm, indicating that asphaltene diffuses to mica surfaces as individual molecules at very low concentration (e.g., 0.01 wt %). Atomic force microscopy images of the adsorbed asphaltenes on mica support the results of the SFA force measurements. The results from the SFA force measurements provide valuable insights into the molecular interactions (e.g., steric repulsion and bridging attraction as a function of distance) of asphaltenes in organic media and hence their roles in crude oil and bitumen production.

Noncovalent interactions of tiopronin-protected gold nanoparticles with DNA: two methods to quantify free energy of binding

The binding of gold nanoparticles capped with N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine (Au@tiopronin) with double-stranded DNA has been investigated and quantified in terms of free energies by using two different approaches. The first approach follows the DNA conformational changes induced by gold nanoparticles using the CD technique. The second methodology consists in the use of pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde as a fluorescent probe. This second procedure implies the determination of the "true" free energy of binding of the probe with DNA, after corrections through solubility measurements. Working at different salt concentrations, the nonelectrostatic and electrostatic components of the binding free energy have been separated. The results obtained revealed that the binding is of nonelectrostatic character, fundamentally. The procedure used in this work could be extended to quantify the binding affinity of other AuNPs/DNA systems.

Nanofluids mediating surface forces

Fluids containing nanostructures, known as nanofluids, are increasingly found in a wide array of applications due to their unique physical properties as compared with their base fluids and larger colloidal suspensions. With several tuneable parameters such as the size, shape and surface chemistry of nanostructures, as well as numerous base fluids available, nanofluids also offer a new paradigm for mediating surface forces. Other properties such as local surface plasmon resonance and size dependent magnetism of nanostructures also present novel mechanisms for imparting tuneable surface interactions. However, our fundamental understanding, experimentally and theoretically, of how these parameters might affect surface forces remains incomplete. Here we review recent results on equilibrium and dynamic surface forces between macroscopic surfaces in nanofluids, highlighting the overriding trends in the correlation between the physical parameters that characterise nanofluids and the surface forces they mediate. We also discuss the challenges that confront existing surface force knowledge as a result of this new paradigm.

Impact of cranberry juice on initial adhesion of the EPS producing bacterium Burkholderia cepacia

The impact of cranberry juice was investigated with respect to the initial adhesion of three isogenic strains of the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia with different extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) producing capacities, viz. a wild-type cepacian EPS producer PC184 and its mutant strains PC184rml with reduced EPS production and PC184bceK with a deficiency in EPS production. Adhesion experiments conducted in a parallel-plate flow chamber demonstrated that, in the absence of cranberry juice, strain PC184 had a significantly higher adhesive capacity compared to the mutant strains. In the presence of cranberry juice, the adhesive capacity of the EPS-producing strain PC184 was largely reduced, while cranberry juice had little impact on the adhesion behavior of either mutant strain. Thermodynamic modeling supported the results from adhesion experiments. Surface force apparatus (SFA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies demonstrated a strong association between cranberry juice components and bacterial EPS. It was concluded that cranberry juice components could impact bacterial initial adhesion by adhering to the EPS and impairing the adhesive capacity of the cells, which provides an insight into the development of novel treatment strategies to block the biofilm formation associated with bacterial infection.

Gold nanoparticle flow sensors designed for dynamic X-ray imaging in biofluids

X-ray-based imaging is one of the most powerful and convenient methods in terms of versatility in applicable energy and high performance in use. Different from conventional nuclear medicine imaging, contrast agents are required in X-ray imaging especially for effectively targeted and molecularly specific functions. Here, in contrast to much reported static accumulation of the contrast agents in targeted organs, dynamic visualization in a living organism is successfully accomplished by the particle-traced X-ray imaging for the first time. Flow phenomena across perforated end walls of xylem vessels in rice are monitored by a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) (approximately 20 nm in diameter) as a flow tracing sensor working in nontransparent biofluids. AuNPs are surface-modified to control the hydrodynamic properties such as hydrodynamic size (DH), zeta-potential, and surface plasmonic properties in aqueous conditions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray nanoscopy (XN), and X-ray microscopy (XM) are used to correlate the interparticle interactions with X-ray absorption ability. Cluster formation and X-ray contrast ability of the AuNPs are successfully modulated by controlling the interparticle interactions evaluated as flow-tracing sensors.

Thiol-induced assembly of Au nanoparticles into chainlike structures and their fixing by encapsulation in silica shells or gelatin microspheres

This article describes a simple method for controlling the assembly of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) into chainlike structures with tunable lengths and interparticle separations. The chainlike assemblies were induced to form by adding HS(CH(2))(n)COOH (n = 2, 10, and 15) into a suspension of Au NPs in a mixture of ethanol and water (98:2 by volume). The number of Au NPs in the chainlike assemblies could be altered by varying the concentration of the thiol while the interparticle distance between Au NPs in the chain could be adjusted by using thiols of different chain lengths. The chainlike assemblies of Au NPs were structurally unstable during storage and purification. We solved this problem by fixing the chainlike assemblies with silica coating via the Stober method or by encapsulating them inside gelatin microspheres with the use of a fluidic device. After fixing, the chainlike assemblies of Au NPs could be preserved for a long period of time, during which their characteristic optical properties remained unchanged.

The role of interparticle and external forces in nanoparticle assembly

The past 20 years have witnessed simultaneous multidisciplinary explosions in experimental techniques for synthesizing new materials, measuring and manipulating nanoscale structures, understanding biological processes at the nanoscale, and carrying out large-scale computations of many-atom and complex macromolecular systems. These advances have led to the new disciplines of nanoscience and nanoengineering. For reasons that are discussed here, most nanoparticles do not 'self-assemble' into their thermodynamically lowest energy state, and require an input of energy or external forces to 'direct' them into particular structures or assemblies. We discuss why and how a combination of self- and directed-assembly processes, involving interparticle and externally applied forces, can be applied to produce desired nanostructured materials.

Adhesion and friction force coupling of gecko setal arrays: implications for structured adhesive surfaces

The extraordinary climbing ability of geckos is partially attributed to the fine structure of their toe pads, which contain arrays consisting of thousands of micrometer-sized stalks (setae) that are in turn terminated by millions of fingerlike pads (spatulae) having nanoscale dimensions. Using a surface forces apparatus (SFA), we have investigated the dynamic sliding characteristics of setal arrays subjected to various loading, unloading, and shearing conditions at different angles. Setal arrays were glued onto silica substrates and, once installed into the SFA, brought toward a polymeric substrate surface and then sheared. Lateral shearing of the arrays was initiated along both the "gripping" and "releasing" directions of the setae on the foot pads. We find that the anisotropic microstructure of the setal arrays gives rise to quite different adhesive and tribological properties when sliding along these two directions, depending also on the angle that the setae subtend with respect to the surface. Thus, dragging the setal arrays along the gripping direction leads to strong adhesion and friction forces (as required during contact and attachment), whereas when shearing along the releasing direction, both forces fall to almost zero (as desired during rapid detachment). The results and analysis provide new insights into the biomechanics of adhesion and friction forces in animals, the coupling between these two forces, and the specialized structures that allow them to optimize these forces along different directions during movement. Our results also have practical implications and criteria for designing reversible and responsive adhesives and articulated robotic mechanisms.

Normal and shear forces generated during the ordering (directed assembly) of confined straight and curved nanowires

The effects of shape on nanowire interactions and shear-induced ordering were studied. Both the normal and lateral forces were sensitive to the particles' curvature. (i) No adhesion was observed between the confining surfaces, and the force profiles were short-ranged and mostly reversible for straight wires but longer-ranged and irreversible for curved wires. (ii) Structural phase transitions can occur in confined nanoparticle films. (iii) During shearing, straight wires order or align more easily than curved wires.

Kinetic approach for the study of noncovalent interaction between [Ru(NH3)5pz]2+ and gold nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) capped with N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine have been used to study the strength and character of the binding of a cationic metal complex, [Ru(NH3)5pz]2+ (pz = pyrazine), at pH = 8, to these nanoparticles. The strength of the binding has been studied using a kinetic approach consisting of the study of the kinetics of the oxidation of this ruthenium complex by S2O82- at different NaCl concentrations. When the ionic strength increases, the strength of the binding decreases, as a consequence of the partial neutralization of the charge on the AuNPs which, at pH = 8, has the tiopronin residue negatively charged. The increase of the ionic strength also produces a change in the character of the binding, which changes from anticooperative to noncooperative when the ionic strength increases. The nonelectrostatic and electrostatic components of the free energy of binding are determined. From the latter, we have obtained the values of the electrostatic potential differences at the AuNPs/solutions interface.
