Confinement-controlled self assembly of colloids with simultaneous isotropic and anisotropic cross-section

The role of chirality and plastic crystallinity in the optical and mechanical properties of chlorosomes

The most efficient light-harvesting antennae found in nature, chlorosomes, are molecular tubular aggregates (TMAs) assembled by pigments without protein scaffolds. Here, we discuss a classification of chlorosomes as a unique tubular plastic crystal and we attribute the robust energy transfer in chlorosomes to this unique nature. To systematically study the role of supramolecular tube chirality by molecular simulation, a role that has remained unresolved, we share a protocol for generating realistic tubes at atomic resolution. We find that both the optical and the mechanical behavior are strongly dependent on chirality. The optical-chirality relation enables a direct interpretation of experimental spectra in terms of overall tube chirality. The mechanical response shows that the overall chirality regulates the hardness of the tube and provides a new characteristic for relating chlorosomes to distinct chirality. Our protocol also applies to other TMA systems and will inspire other systematic studies beyond lattice models.

Re-entrant transition as a bridge of broken ergodicity in confined monolayers of hexagonal prisms and cylinders

The entropy-driven monolayer assembly of hexagonal prisms and cylinders was studied under hard slit confinement. At the conditions investigated, the particles have two distinct and dynamically disconnected rotational states: unflipped and flipped, depending on whether their circular/hexagonal face is parallel or perpendicular to the wall plane. Importantly, these two rotational states cast distinct projection areas over the wall plane that favor either hexagonal or tetragonal packing. Monte Carlo simulations revealed a re-entrant melting transition where an intervening disordered Flipped-Unflipped (FUN) phase is sandwiched between a fourfold tetratic phase at high concentrations and a sixfold triangular solid at intermediate concentrations. The FUN phase contains a mixture of flipped and unflipped particles and is translationally and orientationally disordered. Complementary experiments were conducted with photolithographically fabricated cylindrical microparticles confined in a wedge cell. Both simulations and experiments show the formation of phases with comparable fraction of flipped particles and structure, i.e., the FUN phase, triangular solid, and tetratic phase, indicating that both approaches sample analogous basins of particle-orientation phase-space. The phase behavior of hexagonal prisms in a soft-repulsive wall model was also investigated to exemplify how tunable particle-wall interactions can provide an experimentally viable strategy to dynamically bridge the flipped and unflipped states.

Preparation of colloidal molecules with temperature-tunable interactions from oppositely charged microgel spheres

The self-assembly of small colloidal clusters, so-called colloidal molecules, into crystalline materials has proven extremely challenging, the outcome often being glassy, amorphous states where positions and orientations are locked. In this paper, a new type of colloidal molecule is therefore prepared, assembled from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based microgels that due to their well documented softness and temperature-response allow for greater defect tolerance compared to hard spheres and for convenient in situ tuning of size, volume fraction and inter-particle interactions with temperature. The microgels (B) are assembled by electrostatic adsorption onto oppositely charged, smaller-sized microgels (A), where the relative size of the two determines the valency (n) of the resulting core-satellite ABn-type colloidal molecules. Following assembly, a microfluidic deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) device is used to effectively isolate AB4-type colloidal molecules of tetrahedral geometry that possess a repulsive-to-attractive transition on crossing the microgels' volume phase transition temperature (VPTT). These soft, temperature-responsive colloidal molecules constitute highly promising building blocks for the preparation of new materials with emergent properties, and their optical wavelength-size makes them especially interesting for optical applications.

Convectively Assembled Monolayers of Colloidal Cubes: Evidence of Optimal Packings

We employ a system of cubic colloids with rounded corners to study the close-packed monolayers that form via convective assembly. We show that by controlled solvent evaporation large densely packed monolayers of colloidal cubes are obtained. Using scanning electron microscopy and particle-tracking algorithms, we investigate the local order in detail and show that the obtained monolayers possess their predicted close-packed optimal packings, the Λ₀-lattice and the Λ₁-lattice, as well as the simple square-lattice and disordered packings. We further show that shape details of the cube corners are important for the final packing symmetry, where the frequency of the Λ₁-lattice increases with decreasing roundness of the corners, whereas the frequency of the Λ₀-lattice is unaffected. The formation of both optimal packings is found to be a consequence of the out-of-equilibrium formation process, which leads to small shifts in rows of cubes, thereby transforming the Λ₁-lattice into the Λ₀-lattice.

Phase Behavior of Bowl-Shaped Colloids: Order and Dynamics in Plastic Crystals and Glasses

Charged fluorescent bowl-shaped colloids consisting of a polystyrene core surrounded by a poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) shell are obtained by nanoengineering spherical composite microgels. The phase diagram of these soft bowl-shaped colloids interacting through long-range Yukawa-type interactions is investigated using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The bowl-shaped structure leads to marked differences in phase-behavior compared to their spherical counterpart. With increasing number density, a transition from a fluid to a plastic crystal phase, with freely rotating particles, followed by a glass-like state is observed. It is found that the anisotropic bowl shape frustrates crystallization and slows down crystallization kinetics and causes the glass-like transition to shift to a significantly lower volume fraction than for the spheres. Quantitative analysis of the positional and orientational order demonstrates that the plastic crystal phase exhibits quasi-long range translational order and orientational disorder, while in the disordered glass-like phase the long-range translational order vanishes and short-range rotational order appears, dictated by the specific bowl shape. It is further shown that the different structural transitions are characterized by decoupling of the translational and orientational dynamics.

Hierarchical Fullerene Assembly: Seeded Coprecipitation and Electric Field Directed Assembly

Hierarchical C₆₀ colloidal films are assembled from nanoscale to macroscale. Fullerene molecular crystals are grown via seeded cosolvent precipitation with mixed solvent [tetrahydronaphthalene (THN)/trimethylpyridine (TMP)] and antisolvent 2-propanol. The fullerene solutions are aged under illumination, which due to the presence of TMP reduces the free monomer concentration through fullerene aggregation into nanoparticles. The nanoparticles seed the growth of monodisperse fullerene colloids on injection into the antisolvent. Diverse colloidal morphologies are prepared as a function of injection volume and fullerene solution concentration. The high fullerene solubility of THN enables C₆₀ colloids to be prepared in quantities sufficient for assembly (5 × 10⁸ ). Electric fields are applied to colloidal C₆₀ platelets confined to two dimensions. The particles assemble under dipolar forces, dielectrophoretic forces, and electrohydrodynamic flows. Frequency-dependent phase transitions occur at the critical Maxwell-Wagner crossover frequency, where the effective polarizability of the particles in the medium is substantially reduced. Structures form as a function of field strength, frequency, and confinement including hexagonal, oblique, string fluid, coexistent hexagonal-rhombic, and tetratic.

Phase behaviour and gravity-directed self assembly of hard convex spherical caps

We investigate the phase behaviour and self-assembly of convex spherical caps using Monte Carlo simulations. This model is used to represent the main features observed in experimental colloidal particles with mushroom-cap shape [Riley et al., Langmuir, 2010, 26, 1648]. The geometry of this non-centrosymmetric convex model is fully characterized by the aspect ratio χ* defined as the spherical cap height to diameter ratio. We use NPT Monte Carlo simulations combined with free energy calculations to determine the most stable crystal structures and the phase behaviour of convex spherical caps with different aspect ratios. We find a variety of crystal structures at each aspect ratio, including plastic and dimer-based crystals; small differences in chemical potential between the structures with similar morphology suggest that convex spherical caps have the tendency to form polycrystalline phases rather than crystallising into a single uniform structure. With the exception of plastic crystals observed at large aspect ratios (χ* > 0.75), crystallisation kinetics seem to be too slow, hindering the spontaneous formation of ordered structures. As an alternative, we also present a study of directing the self-assembly of convex spherical caps via sedimentation onto solid substrates. This study contributes to show how small changes to particle shape can significantly alter the self-assembly of crystal structures, and how a simple gravity field and a template can substantially enhance the process.

Spatial confinement governs orientational order in patchy particles

Orientational order in condensed matter plays a key role in determining material properties such as ferromagnetism, viscoelasticity or birefringence. We studied purely orientational ordering in closely-packed one-patch colloidal particles confined between flat substrates, where the particles can only rotate and are ordered via the sticky interaction between the patches. For the first time, we experimentally realized a rich variety of mesoscopic patterns through orientational ordering of colloids by controlling patch size and confinement thickness. The combination of experiment and numerical simulation reveals the decisive role of confinement: An ordered state(s) is selected from the (meta)stable options in bulk when it is commensurate with the system geometry and boundary conditions; otherwise, frustration induces a unique order. Our study offers a new means of systematic control over mesoscopic structures via orientational ordering in patchy particles. The system would also possess unique functionalities through the rotational response of the particles to external stimuli.

Phase behavior of polyhedral nanoparticles in parallel plate confinement

Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the phase behavior of hard cubes, truncated cubes, cuboctahedra and truncated octahedra when confined between two parallel hard walls. The walls are separated by a distance H* which is varied to accommodate a different number of layers, from a monolayer up to approximately 5 layers, hence allowing us to probe the transitional phase behavior as the system goes from a quasi-2D geometry to a quasi-3D bulk behavior. While our results do reveal some phases whose structures resemble those that have been observed before for such systems in 2D and 3D spaces, other phases are also detected, including buckled phases, rotator plastic phases, and solids with significant translational disorder. Ordered phases formed for H* values that are a little too narrow to accommodate an additional particle layer are particularly interesting as they tend to have complex structures. The maximum density for such frustrated phases is low compared to that of non-frustrated ones for the same system at different H*. As the asphericity in the shapes is reduced, the simulated phases show structural features that approach those of the phases that have been reported for hard spheres under similar confinement.

Anisotropic responsive microgels with tuneable shape and interactions

Highly monodisperse polystyrene/poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (PS-PNIPMAM) core-shell composite microgels were synthesized and further nanoengineered in either ellipsoidal, faceted or bowl-shaped particles. Beside their anisotropy in shape, the microgel design enables an exquisite control of the particle conformation, size and interactions from swollen and hydrophilic to collapsed and hydrophobic using temperature as an external control variable. The post-processing procedures and the characterization of the different particles are first presented. Their potential as model systems for the investigation of the effects of anisotropic shape and interactions on the phase behavior is further demonstrated. Finally, the self-assembly of bowl-shaped composite microgel particles is discussed, where the temperature and an external AC electric field are employed to control the interactions from repulsive to attractive and from soft repulsive to dipolar, respectively.

Confinement Induced Plastic Crystal-to-Crystal Transitions in Rodlike Particles with Long-Ranged Repulsion

Colloidal particles in geometrical confinement display a complex variety of packing structures different from their three-dimensional (3D) bulk counterpart. Here, we confined charged rodlike colloids with long-ranged repulsions to a thin wedge-shaped cell and show, by quantitative 3D confocal microscopy, that not only their positional but also their orientational order depends sensitively upon the slit width. Synchronized with transitions in lattice symmetry and number of layers confinement induces plastic crystal-to-crystal transitions. A model analysis suggests that this complex sequence of more or less rotationally ordered states originates from the subtle competition between the electrostatic repulsion of a rod with the wall and with its neighbors.

Self-assembly and crystallisation of indented colloids at a planar wall

We report experimental and simulation studies of the structure of a monolayer of indented ("lock and key") colloids, on a planar surface. On adding a non-absorbing polymer with prescribed radius and volume fraction, depletion interactions are induced between the colloids, with controlled range and strength. For spherical particles, this leads to crystallisation, but the indented colloids crystallise less easily than spheres, in both simulation and experiment. Nevertheless, simulations show that indented colloids do form plastic (rotator) crystals. We discuss the conditions under which this occurs, and the possibilities of lower-symmetry crystal states. We also comment on the kinetic accessibility of these states.

Switching plastic crystals of colloidal rods with electric fields

When a crystal melts into a liquid both long-ranged positional and orientational order are lost, and long-time translational and rotational self-diffusion appear. Sometimes, these properties do not change at once, but in stages, allowing states of matter such as liquid crystals or plastic crystals with unique combinations of properties. Plastic crystals/glasses are characterized by long-ranged positional order/frozen-in-disorder but short-ranged orientational order, which is dynamic. Here we show by quantitative three-dimensional studies that charged rod-like colloidal particles form three-dimensional plastic crystals and glasses if their repulsions extend significantly beyond their length. These plastic phases can be reversibly switched to full crystals by an electric field. These new phases provide insight into the role of rotations in phase behaviour and could be useful for photonic applications.

Degenerate crystals from colloidal dimers under confinement

Colloidal aperiodic phases (i.e., entropy stabilized degenerate crystals, DCs) are realized via self-assembly of hollow fluorescent silica dimers under wedge-cell confinement. The dimer building blocks approximate two tangent spheres and their arrangements are studied via laser scanning confocal microscopy. In the DCs, the individual lobes tile a lattice and five distinct DC arrangements with square, triangular or rectangular layer symmetry are determined as a function of confinement height. Moreover, Monte Carlo simulations are used to construct the phase diagram for DCs up to two layer confinements and to analyze structural order in detail. Just as for spheres, the DC structural transitions under confinement are attributed to the ability or frustration to accommodate an integral number of particle layers between hard walls. Unlike spheres, dimers can also experience transitions involving changes in orientation. DCs are among the unconventional structures (e.g., semi-regular tilings, quasicrystals, plastic crystals) expected to enhance the properties of photonic solids.

Colloidal self-assembly-directed laser-induced non-close-packed crystalline silicon nanostructures

This report describes an ultrafast, large-area, and highly flexible method to construct complex two- and three-dimensional silicon nanostructures with deterministic non-close-packed symmetry. Pulsed excimer laser irradiation is used to induce a transient melt transformation of amorphous silicon filled in a colloidal self-assembly-directed inverse opal template, resulting in a nanostructured crystalline phase. The pattern transfer yields are high, and long-range order is maintained. This technique represents a potential route to obtain silicon nanostructures of various symmetries and associated unique properties for advanced applications such as energy storage and generation.
