Membrane Distillation-Crystallization for Sustainable Carbon Utilization and Storage

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions from power plants can be limited using postcombustion carbon dioxide capture by amine-based solvents. However, sustainable strategies for the simultaneous utilization and storage of carbon dioxide are limited. In this study, membrane distillation-crystallization is used to facilitate the controllable production of carbonate minerals directly from carbon dioxide-loaded amine solutions and waste materials such as fly ash residues and waste brines from desalination. To identify the most suitable conditions for carbon mineralization, we vary the membrane type, operating conditions, and system configuration. Feed solutions with 30 wt % monoethanolamine are loaded with 5-15% CO2 and heated to 40-50 °C before being dosed with 0.18 M Ca2+ and Mg2+. Membranes with lower surface energy and greater roughness are found to more rapidly promote mineralization due to up to 20% greater vapor flux. Lower operating temperature improves membrane wetting tolerance by 96.2% but simultaneously reduces crystal growth rate by 48.3%. Sweeping gas membrane distillation demonstrates a 71.6% reduction in the mineralization rate and a marginal improvement (37.5%) on membrane wetting tolerance. Mineral identity and growth characteristics are presented, and the analysis is extended to explore the potential improvements for carbon mineralization as well as the feasibility of future implementation.

Wall-free droplet microfluidics for probing biological processes by high-brilliance X-ray scattering techniques

Here we review probing biological processes initiated by the deposition of droplets on surfaces by micro- and nanobeam X-ray scattering techniques using synchrotron radiation and X-ray free-electron laser sources. We review probing droplet evaporation on superhydrophobic surfaces and reactions with substrates, basics of droplets deposition and flow simulations, droplet deposition techniques and practical experience at a synchrotron beamline. Selected applications with biological relevance will be reviewed and perspectives for the latest generation of high-brilliance X-ray sources discussed.

Controllable light-induced droplet evaporative crystallization

Droplet evaporative crystallization is one of the practical tools for clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and pharmaceutical synthesis. Herein, we proposed a controllable and flexible light strategy to manipulate the droplet evaporative crystallization, in which the photothermal effect of a focused infrared laser actuated intense evaporation to attain the droplet evaporative crystallization. Due to the localized heating effect, not only the droplet evaporative crystallization could be promoted, but also the resultant Marangoni-flow enabled the crystals to be concentrated, exhibiting excellent controllability. Besides, a relationship between the crystallization starting time and the solution concentration/laser power was achieved, which benefited the manipulation of the droplet evaporative crystallization. The light strategy proposed in the present study possesses promising potential for future applications.

Myelin structure in unfixed, single nerve fibers: Scanning X-ray microdiffraction with a beam size of 200nm

Previous raster-scanning with a 1μm X-ray beam of individual, myelinated fibers from glutaraldehyde-fixed rat sciatic nerve revealed a spatially-dependent variation in the diffraction patterns from single fibers. Analysis indicated differences in the myelin periodicity, membrane separations, distribution of proteins, and orientation of membrane lamellae. As chemical fixation is known to produce structural artifacts, we sought to determine in the current study whether the structural heterogeneity is intrinsic to unfixed myelin. Using a 200nm-beam that was about five-fold smaller than before, we raster-scanned individual myelinated fibers from both the peripheral (PNS; mouse and rat sciatic nerves) and central (CNS; rat corpus callosum) nervous systems. As expected, the membrane stacking in the internodal region was nearly parallel to the fiber axis and in the paranodal region it was perpendicular to the axis. A myelin lattice was also frequently observed when the incident beam was injected en face to the sheath. Myelin periodicity and diffracted intensity varied with axial position along the fiber, as did the calculated membrane profiles. Raster-scanning with an X-ray beam at sub-micron resolution revealed for the first time that the individual myelin sheaths in unfixed nerve are heterogeneous in both membrane structure and packing.

Recent advances in superhydrophobic surfaces and their relevance to biology and medicine

By mimicking naturally occurring superhydrophobic surfaces, scientists can now realize artificial surfaces on which droplets of a few microliters of water are forced to assume an almost spherical shape and an extremely high contact angle. In recent decades, these surfaces have attracted much attention due to their technological applications for anti-wetting and self-cleaning materials. Very recently, researchers have shifted their interest to investigate whether superhydrophobic surfaces can be exploited to study biological systems. This research effort has stimulated the design and realization of new devices that allow us to actively organize, visualize and manipulate matter at both the microscale and nanoscale levels. Such precise control opens up wide applications in biomedicine, as it allows us to directly manipulate objects at the typical length scale of cells and macromolecules. This progress report focuses on recent biological and medical applications of superhydrophobicity. Particular regard is paid to those applications that involve the detection, manipulation and study of extremely small quantities of molecules, and to those that allow high throughput cell and biomaterial screening.

Formation of Highly Ordered Spherical Aggregates from Drying Microdroplets of Colloidal Suspension

The formation of highly ordered spherical aggregates of silica nanoparticles by the evaporation of single droplets of an aqueous colloidal suspension levitated (confined) in the electrodynamic quadrupole trap is reported. The transient and final structures formed during droplet evaporation have been deposited on a silicon substrate and then studied with SEM. Various successive stages of the evaporation-driven aggregation of nanoparticles have been identified: formation of the surface layer of nanoparticles, formation of the highly ordered spherical structure, collapse of the spherical surface layer leading to the formation of densely packed spherical aggregates, and rearrangement of the aggregate into the final structure of a stable 3D quasi-crystal. The evaporation-driven aggregation of submicrometer particles in spherical symmetry leads to sizes and morphologies of the transient and final structures significantly different than in the case of aggregation on a substrate. The numerical model presented in the article allows us to predict and visualize the observed aggregation stages and their dynamics and the final aggregates observed with SEM.

Colloidal Nanoparticle Interaction Transition during Solvent Evaporation Investigated by in-Situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

In-situ scanning small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments have been performed to probe the drying of a single suspended droplet of silica colloids. It has been demonstrated that the formation of a nanoparticle shell during drying can be confirmed just by measuring the temporal evolution of the spatial transmission profile across the drying droplet. The shrinkage of the droplet stops once the shell is formed. The temporal dependence of the shell thickness and droplet radius has been estimated by quantitative analysis of the functionality of the transmission profiles. It is revealed that the position of the correlation peak originating from interactions between silica nanoparticles evolves linearly during the initial stage of drying and exhibits sigmoidal growth behavior in later stages. The interaction between colloidal particles in different drying stages has been investigated. We provide experimental confirmation of the transition from repulsive interaction to a capillary-driven short-range attraction during shell formation. The present work demonstrates that in-situ scanning SAXS on a suspended droplet is an invaluable technique for monitoring the dynamic self-organization of colloids as it probes the drying of complex fluids without the interference of a substrate.

First stages of siderite crystallisation during CO2 corrosion of steel evaluated using in situ synchrotron small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering

We use in situ synchrotron small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) to demonstrate that the formation of crystalline siderite (FeCO(3)) during the corrosion of steel in CO(2)-saturated brine - a problem of practical interest relating to the growth of protective scales on the interior surface of oil and gas production pipelines - is preceded by the formation of a colloidal precipitate in the solution and an amorphous surface layer, both assumed to be amorphous ferrous carbonate. Grazing incidence SAXS shows instantaneous film formation upon the application of an anodic potential, followed by development of a separate population of particles at later times, then by the formation of crystalline species, observed by WAXS. These observations can be interpreted in terms of crystal nucleation within the amorphous surface layer. Traces of Cr(3+) in the solution significantly accelerate the precipitation rate of the colloidal precursor and accelerate the appearance of the crystalline scale. We speculate on the significance of these observations for the nucleation, growth and morphology of the corrosion scale and hence its protectiveness.

An integrated superhydrophobic-plasmonic biosensor for mid-infrared protein detection at the femtomole level

In this work we present an integrated biosensor that enables FTIR (Fourier Transform-Infrared) detection of analytes contained in diluted solutions. The fabricated nanosensor allows for the detection of proteins through the identification of the fine structure of their amide I and II bands, up to the nanomolar concentration range. We exploited two distinct effects to enhance the sensitivity: (i) the concentration effect due to the presence of the superhydrophobic surface that conveys molecules dispersed in solution directly inside the focus of a FTIR spectromicroscope; (ii) the plasmonic resonance of the nanoantenna array that provides electromagnetic field enhancement in the amide I and II spectral region (1500-1700 cm(-1)). We demonstrate the detection of ferritin in the nanomolar concentration range, a blood protein that is usually available in small amounts in typical blood samples.

A superhydrophobic chip based on SU-8 photoresist pillars suspended on a silicon nitride membrane

We developed a new generation of superhydrophobic chips optimized for probing ultrasmall sample quantities by X-ray scattering and fluorescence techniques. The chips are based on thin Si3N4 membranes with a tailored pattern of SU-8 photoresist pillars. Indeed, aqueous solution droplets can be evaporated and concentrated at predefined positions using a non-periodic pillar pattern. We demonstrated quantitatively the deposition and aggregation of gold glyconanoparticles from the evaporation of a nanomolar droplet in a small spot by raster X-ray nanofluorescence. Further, raster nanocrystallography of biological objects such as rod-like tobacco mosaic virus nanoparticles reveals crystalline macro-domain formation composed of highly oriented nanorods.

Probing droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces by synchrotron radiation scattering techniques

Droplets on artificially structured superhydrophobic surfaces represent quasi contact-free sample environments which can be probed by X-ray microbeams and nanobeams in the absence of obstructing walls. This review will discuss basic surface wettability concepts and introduce the technology of structuring surfaces. Quasi contact-free droplets are compared with contact-free droplets; processes related to deposition and evaporation on solid surfaces are discussed. Droplet coalescence based on the electrowetting effect allows the probing of short-time mixing and reaction processes. The review will show for several materials of biological interest that structural processes related to conformational changes, nucleation and assembly during droplet evaporation can be spatially and temporally resolved by raster-scan diffraction techniques. Orientational ordering of anisotropic materials deposited during solidification at pinning sites facilitates the interpretation of structural data.

Myelin organization in the nodal, paranodal, and juxtaparanodal regions revealed by scanning x-ray microdiffraction

X-ray diffraction has provided extensive information about the arrangement of lipids and proteins in multilamellar myelin. This information has been limited to the abundant inter-nodal regions of the sheath because these regions dominate the scattering when x-ray beams of 100 µm diameter or more are used. Here, we used a 1 µm beam, raster-scanned across a single nerve fiber, to obtain detailed information about the molecular architecture in the nodal, paranodal, and juxtaparanodal regions. Orientation of the lamellar membrane stacks and membrane periodicity varied spatially. In the juxtaparanode-internode, 198–202 Å-period membrane arrays oriented normal to the nerve fiber axis predominated, whereas in the paranode-node, 205–208 Å-period arrays oriented along the fiber direction predominated. In parts of the sheath distal to the node, multiple sets of lamellar reflections were observed at angles to one another, suggesting that the myelin multilayers are deformed at the Schmidt-Lanterman incisures. The calculated electron density of myelin in the different regions exhibited membrane bilayer profiles with varied electron densities at the polar head groups, likely due to different amounts of major myelin proteins (P0 glycoprotein and myelin basic protein). Scattering from the center of the nerve fibers, where the x-rays are incident en face (perpendicular) to the membrane planes, provided information about the lateral distribution of protein. By underscoring the heterogeneity of membrane packing, microdiffraction analysis suggests a powerful new strategy for understanding the underlying molecular foundation of a broad spectrum of myelinopathies dependent on local specializations of myelin structure in both the PNS and CNS.

Amyloid β peptide conformational changes in the presence of a lipid membrane system

Here we are presenting a comparative analysis of conformational changes of two amyloid β peptides, Aβ(25-35) and Aβ(1-42), in the presence and absence of a phospholipid system, namely, POPC/POPS (1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphospatidylcholine/palmitoyl-2-oleoylphospatidylserine), through Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation micro Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and micro X-ray diffraction. Ringlike samples were obtained from the evaporation of pure and mixed solutions of the proteins together with the POPC/POPS system on highly hydrophilic substrates. The results confirm the presence of a α-helical to β-sheet transition from the internal rim of the ringlike samples to the external one in the pure Aβ(25-35) residual, probably due to the convective flow inside the droplets sitting on highly hydrophilic substrates enhancing the local concentration of the peptide at the external edge of the dried drop. In contrast, the presence of POPC/POPS lipids in the peptide does not result in α-helical structures and introduces the presence of antiparallel β-sheet material together with parallel β-sheet structures and possible β-turns. As a control, Aβ(1-42) peptide was also tested and shows β-sheet conformations independently from the presence of the lipid system. The μXRD analysis further confirmed these conclusions, showing how the absence of the phospholipid system induces in the Aβ(25-35) a probable composite α/β material while its coexistence with the peptide leads to a not oriented β-sheet conformation. These results open interesting scenarios on the study of conformational changes of Aβ peptides and could help, with further investigations, to better clarify the role of enzymes and alternative lipid systems involved in the amyloidosis process of Aβ fragments.

Probing evaporation induced assembly across a drying colloidal droplet using in situ small-angle X-ray scattering at the synchrotron source

Colloidal particles in a tiny drying droplet are forced to assemble due to attractive capillary forces. Jamming of the particles throughout the droplet remains either isotropic or anisotropic depending upon the drying kinetics and the physicochemical environment. In this work, we explore the dynamical evolution of such an assembly process across a single evaporative droplet by in situ scanning small-angle scattering using a micro-focused X-ray beam at the synchrotron source. A methodology has been elucidated to differentiate quantitatively between the isotropic and the anisotropic jamming process. Switching of jamming behaviour depending on the initial particle volume fraction in the droplet has been demonstrated. Three distinct stages of assembly, associated with droplet shrinkage, have been revealed even during isotropic jamming. This is in contrast to the drying of a pure liquid droplet under diffusion limited evaporation. It has been established that such in situ scattering measurements can also be used to estimate the temporal evolutions of the viscosity of a drying suspension as well as the diffusivity of nanoparticles in a droplet.

Hierarchical biomineralization of calcium carbonate regulated by silk microspheres

As an analog of the main protein contained in nacre regenerated Bombyx mori silk fibroin has a significant influence on the morphology and polymorphic nature of CaCO3 in the biomineralization process. A number of studies have implied that the self-assembling aggregate structure of silk fibroin is a key factor in controlling CaCO3 aggregation. Further insight into this role is necessary with a particular need to prepare silk fibroin aggregates with homogeneous structures to serve as templates for the mineralization process. Here we have prepared homogeneous silk microspheres to serve as templates for CaCO3 mineralization in order to provide an experimental insight into silk-regulated crystallization processes. CaCO3 particles with different nano- and microstructures, and their polymorphs, were successfully formed by controlling the mineralization process. The key function of silk aggregation in controlling the morphology and polymorphic nature of CaCO3 particles was confirmed. A regulating effect of silk on the spatial features was also observed. A two-step process for silk fibroin-regulated biomineralization was found, with different levels of heterogeneous nucleation and aggregation. A full understanding of silk fibroin-regulated biomineralization mechanisms would help in understanding the function of organic polymers in natural biomineralization, and provide a way forward in the design and synthesis of new materials in which organic-inorganic interfaces are the keys to function, biological interfaces and many related material features.

Superhydrophobic surfaces allow probing of exosome self organization using X-ray scattering

Drops of exosome dispersions from healthy epithelial colon cell line and colorectal cancer cells were dried on a superhydrophobic PMMA substrate. The residues were studied by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering using both a synchrotron radiation micrometric beam and a high-flux table-top X-ray source. Structural differences between healthy and cancerous cells were detected in the lamellar lattices of the exosome macro-aggregates.

Fast, active droplet interaction: coalescence and reactive mixing controlled by electrowetting on a superhydrophobic surface

A novel electrowetting-on-dielectrics (EWOD) device in open planar geometry allows probing of droplet mixing on a superhydrophobic substrate under quasi contact-free conditions. We demonstrate a droplet-based microreactor with integrated convective-flow mixing for the reactive-mixing of CaCl(2)/Na(2)CO(3) solutions. The device provides unique conditions for scattering, spectroscopy and imaging probes requiring an unobstructed droplet-access.
