Abstract
Hydrogels are widely used as excellent drug carriers in the field of biomedicine. However, their application in medicine is limited by their poor mechanical properties and softness. To improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels, a novel triple-network amphiphilic hydrogel with three overlapping crosslinking methods using a one-pot free-radical polymerization was synthesized in this study. Temperature-sensitive and pH-sensitive monomers were incorporated into the hydrogel to confer stimulus responsiveness, making the hydrogel stimuli-responsive. The successful synthesis of the hydrogel was confirmed using techniques, such as proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In order to compare and analyze the properties of physically crosslinked hydrogels, physically-chemically double-crosslinked hydrogels, and physically-chemically clicked triple-crosslinked hydrogels, various tests were conducted on the gels' morphology, swelling behavior, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and drug loading capacity. The results indicate that the triple-crosslinked hydrogel maintains low swelling, high mechanical strength, and good thermal stability while not significantly compromising its drug delivery capability.

Abstract
Stimulus-responsive hydrogels have been widely used in the field of drug delivery because of their three-dimensional pore size and the ability to change the drug release rate with the change in external environment. In this paper, the temperature-sensitive monomer 2-methyl-2-acrylate-2-(2-methoxyethoxy-ethyl) ethyl ester (MEO2MA) and oligoethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) as well as the pH-sensitive monomer N,N-Diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) were used to make the gel with temperature and pH response. Four kinds of physicochemical double-crosslinked amphiphilic co-network gels with different polymerization degrees were prepared by the one-pot method using the stereocomplex between polylactic acid as physical crosslinking and click chemistry as chemical crosslinking. By testing morphology, swelling, thermal stability and mechanical properties, the properties of the four hydrogels were compared. Finally, the drug release rate of the four gels was tested by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. It was found that the synthetic hydrogels had a good drug release rate and targeting, and had great application prospect in drug delivery.

Abstract
This review paper analyzes the development of advanced class polylactide (PLA) materials through a combination of stereocomplexation and nanocomposites approaches. The similarities in these approaches provide the opportunity to generate an advanced stereocomplex PLA nanocomposite (stereo-nano PLA) material with various beneficial properties. As a potential "green" polymer with tunable characteristics (e.g., modifiable molecular structure and organic-inorganic miscibility), stereo-nano PLA could be used for various advanced applications. The molecular structure modification of PLA homopolymers and nanoparticles in stereo-nano PLA materials enables us to encounter stereocomplexation and nanocomposites constraints. The hydrogen bonding of D- and L-lactide fragments aids in the formation of stereococomplex crystallites, while the hetero-nucleation capabilities of nanofillers result in a synergism that improves the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of materials, including stereocomplex memory (melt stability) and nanoparticle dispersion. The special properties of selected nanoparticles also allow the production of stereo-nano PLA materials with distinctive characteristics, such as electrical conductivity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties. The D- and L-lactide chains in PLA copolymers provide self-assembly capabilities to form stable nanocarrier micelles for encapsulating nanoparticles. This development of advanced stereo-nano PLA with biodegradability, biocompatibility, and tunability properties shows potential for use in wider and advanced applications as a high-performance material, in engineering field, electronic, medical device, biomedical, diagnosis, and therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Physical crosslinking and chemical crosslinking were used to further improve the mechanical properties and stability of the gel. A temperature/pH dual sensitive and double-crosslinked gel was prepared by the stereo-complex of HEMA-PLLA20 and HEMA-PDLA20 as a physical crosslinking agent, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a chemical crosslinking agent, and azodiisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator for free radical polymerization. This paper focused on the performance comparison of chemical crosslinked gel, a physical crosslinked gel, and a dual crosslinked gel. The water absorption, temperature, and pH sensitivity of the three hydrogels were studied by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and swelling performance research. We used a thermal analysis system (TGA) and dynamic viscoelastic spectrometer to study thermal properties and mechanical properties of these gels. Lastly, the in vitro drug release behavior of double-crosslinked hydrogel loaded with doxorubicin under different conditions was studied. The results show that the double-crosslinked and temperature/pH dual responsive hydrogels has great mechanical properties and good stability.

Abstract
In this study, a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-polycaprolactone (POSS-PCL)-cored octa-arm star-shaped glyco block copolymer (BCP), poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(glucopyranose) (Star-POSS-PCL-b-PGlc) was successfully synthesized via the combination of ring opening polymerization (ROP) and MADIX (macromolecular design by interchange of xanthate) polymerization technique. Herein, initially octa(3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyl dimethylsiloxy) POSS (Star-POSS) was utilized to initiate the ROP of the ε-caprolactone to get octa-arm star-shaped Star-POSS-PCL. A successive bromination followed by xanthation of the synthesized Star-POSS-PCL polymer allowed us to further polymerize 3-O-acryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-glucofuranose (AIpGlc) via MADIX polymerization. Formation of the star-shaped block copolymer (BCP) was characterized using 1H NMR, FT-IR and DSC analyses. The morphology and the aqueous solution behavior of the Star-POSS-PCL-b-PGlc were analyzed using FESEM, HRTEM and DLS analyses, respectively. The lectin-binding efficiency of the star-shaped BCP having different glycopolymer block length was studied using turbidimetry assay and fluorescence quenching titration (FQT) using photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Here, FITC labeled concanavalin A (FITC-Con A) was used as a model lectin. The cytotoxicity study of the star-shaped BCPs over the human fibroblast cells revealed the non-toxic nature of the BCPs which open up its great potential towards drug delivery vector.

Abstract
Improving foamability of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) resin is a key issue for its critical foaming applications with high-performance and ultralow density. However, owing to the rheological nature of linear PLA chain structure with relatively low molecular weight, the overall foamability of PLA resin cannot meet the processing requirements of foaming purpose. Here, we describe a simple and versatile technique to prepare high foamability PLA resin by inducing chain extender through grafting octa(epoxycyclohexyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) on carbon nanotubes (CNT). After the orderly assemble of the two nanoparticles, an obvious increase in melt elasticity of PLA is observed. The enhanced melt elasticity of PLA had a significant effect on controlling subsequent foaming behavior. Thus, a homogeneous and finer cellular morphology of PLA rigid foam was obtained with a proper content of CNT-POSS. Eventually, the expansion ratio of chain-extended PLA foam was 13 times higher than that of unmodified PLA foam. The proposed design methodology will potentially pave a way for designing and preparing high-performance PLA rigid foam products.

Abstract
A water-based silsesquioxane (POSS)-containing polymer, POSS-PAA, was synthesized by using octavinyl-POSS (V-POSS) and acrylic acid (AA) via interfacial polymerization. The TEM of POSS-PAA showed that the polymer formed a core-shell structure in aqueous solution and was well-dispersed. The star-shaped POSS-PAA and linear PAA were both tanned with 3.5% chromium tanning agent, and leather hide was tanned with 3.5% chromium tanning agent as a control. The results showed that the shrinkage temperature of wet-blue leather treated by POSS-PAA was increased by 3.5 °C than that of the control. The thickening rate of the POSS-PAA treated wet-blue leather samples was increased by 21% and 96% than the linear PAA-treated leather and the control leather, respectively. The EDS results suggested that the POSS-PAA pre-treated leather had a higher chromium content than the others, and the chromium distribution from the leather flesh side to the grain side was uniform. Moreover, the Cr2O3 content in both the POSS-PAA and the PAA pre-treated tanning waste water was reduced by about 50%, compared to the control waste. The COD and BOD of the POSS-PAA pre-tanning waste were decreased compared to the others. Therefore, POSS-PAA appeared to be promising for promoting the development of cleaner leather production.

Abstract
Abstract
Commercial poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) was blended with different contents of graphene oxide-graft-poly(d-lactic acid) (GO-g-PDLA), which was synthesized via ring-opening polymerization using modified GO as initiator. PLLA and PLLA/GO-g-PDLA blend foams were prepared in a batch process via varying-temperature mode using supercritical carbon dioxide as physical foaming agent. The results showed that the addition of GO-g-PDLA in PLLA leads to the formation of stereocomplex (sc)-crystallites. Increase in the GO-g-PDLA content enhances the IR absorption, diffraction peak and melting peak corresponding to the sc-crystallites. The addition of GO-g-PDLA to PLLA leads to the decrease of the cell diameter, increase of the cell density and to a little change in expansion ratio, which is attributed to the fact that the enhancement of PLLA crystallization restricts cell growth and GO-g-PDLA acts as nucleation point.

Abstract
Upon blending enantiomeric poly(l-lactide) [i.e., poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA)] and poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) [i.e., poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA)] or synthesis of stereo block poly(lactide) [i.e., poly(lactic acid) (PLA)], a stereocomplex (SC) is formed. PLA SC has a higher melting temperature (or heat resistance), mechanical performance, and hydrolysis-resistance compared to those of neat PLLA and PDLA. Because of such effects, PLA SC has been extensively studied in terms of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications as well as commodity, industrial, and environmental applications. Stereocomplexation stabilizes and strengthens PLA-based hydrogel or nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Stereocomplexation increases the barrier property of PLA-based materials and thereby prolongs drug release from PLA based materials. In addition, PLA SC is attracting significant attention because it can act as a nucleating agent for the widely used biobased polymer PLLA and thereby the heat resistance of PLLA-based materials can be enhanced. Interestingly, a wide variety of SCs other than PLA SC are found to have been formed in the enantiomeric substituted PLA blends and stereo block substituted PLA polymers. In the present review article, a decade of progress in investigation of PLA SCs is summarized.

Abstract
The stereocomplex formation of poly(l,l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(d,d-lactide) (PDLA) was selected in order to investigate the interaction of the two surfaces including hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interaction. Adhesion force measurement using surface force apparatus (SFA) equipped with an optical microscope was conducted on the PLLA and PDLA spin-coated films. The adhesion forces, Fad, phenomenologically followed the linear relation with the applied normal load, L. For the force Fad between PLLA and PDLA films with low molecular weights (PLLA, Mn = 2800; PDLA, : Mn = 2100), the slope of linear fitting of Fad vs L was significantly larger for the heterointerface (PLLA/PLDA) compared with that for the homointerface (PLLA/PLLA and PDLA/PDLA). However, when polymers with higher molecular weights (PLLA, Mn = 8500; PDLA, Mn = 8300) were measured, the slopes of linear fitting lines were almost the same for hetero- and homointerfaces. This indicated that the mobility of the lower molecular weight PLLA/PDLA films promoted the selective interaction of PLLA and PDLA under the applied normal loads. The adhesion between the outermost PLLA layer and PDLA layer prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly was also measured. It is interesting that the adhesion force was very weak in this case. This weak adhesion could be explained by the much less mobility of the polymer chain due to the stereocomplex formation within the LbL layers. This study demonstrated that the adhesion force due to the selective interaction of PLLA and PDLA between PLLA/PDLA films could be directly measured, and depended on the mobility of the outermost polymer chains, which reflected the different structures of polymer chains in the organized complex films.

Abstract
The application of Doxorubicin (DOX) in the chemotherapy for lymphoma is seriously hampered by the side effects of DOX, especially the cardiotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Nanoscale micelle as a promising drug delivery system has gained more and more interest in malignancy chemotherapy. In this study, we successfully fabricated DOX-loaded stereocomplex micelle (SCM/DOX) from the equimolar mixture of the enantiomeric four-armed poly(ethylene glycol)-polylactide (PDM and PLM) copolymers. The SCM/DOX showed proper hydrodynamic size of ~90 nm and slow DOX release in phosphate-buffered saline at pH 7.4. The antitumor activities of DOX, PDM/DOX, PLM/DOX, and SCM/DOX toward lymphoma cells were tested in vitro and in vivo. Our data demonstrated that the SCM/DOX more effectively inhibited the cell proliferation than PDM/DOX, PLM/DOX, and free DOX in vitro. In the in vivo antitumor test, the SCM/DOX more effectively inhibited the growth of EL4 lymphoma, too. In addition, the body weight loss caused by SCM/DOX was alleviated than DOX. More importantly, the cardiotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity caused by DOX in mice were obviously attenuated compared to the free DOX treatment group. Taken together, all the results indicated that the SCM/DOX could inhibit the growth of EL4 lymphoma cells and attenuate the toxicity of DOX more efficiently, which suggested SCM/DOX was promising for the prevention and treatment of lymphoma.

Abstract
The reactions of enantiomeric glycerol-based 3-armed lactide oligomers (H3DLAO and H3LLAO) and a diethylene glycol-based 2-armed ɛ-caprolactone oligomer (H2CLO) with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) produced polyesterurethane copolymer networks (PEU-3scLAO/2CLOs 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100) with different feed ratios of stereocomplex (sc) lactide oligomer (H3scLAO = H3DLAO + H3LLAO, H3DLAO/H3LLAO = 1/1) and H2CLO. Thermal and mechanical properties of the copolymer networks were compared with those of a simple homochiral (hc) network (PEU-3DLAO) produced by the reaction of H3DLAO and HDI. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetric analyses revealed that sc crystallites are formed without any hc crystallization for PEU-3scLAO/2CLOs, and that PEU-3DLAO is amorphous. The melting temperatures of sc crystallites for PEU-3scLAO/2CLOs were much higher than that of hc crystallites of H3DLAO. The polarized optical microscopic analysis revealed that the nucleation efficiency is enhanced with increasing feed of H3scLAO fraction, whereas the spherulite growth rate is accelerated with increasing feed H2CLO fraction over 100/0-50/50 networks. PEU-3scLAO/2CLO 100/0 (i.e., PEU-3scLAO) exhibited a higher tensile strength and modulus than PEU-3DLAO. The elongation at break and tensile toughness for PEU-3scLAO/2CLOs increased with an increasing feed amount of H2CLO.

Abstract
A highly tunable nanoparticle (NP) system with multifunctionalities was developed as drug nanocarrier via a facile layer-by-layer (LbL) stereocomplex (SC) self-assembly of enantiomeric poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) in solution using silica-coated magnetite (Fe3O4@SiO2) as template. The poly(lactide) (PLA) SC coated NPs (Fe3O4@SiO2@-SC) were further endowed with different stimuli-responsiveness by controlling the outermost layer coatings with respective pH-sensitive poly(lactic acid)-poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PLA-D) and temperature-sensitive poly(lactic acid)-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PLA-N) diblock copolymers to yield Fe3O4@SiO2@SC-D and Fe3O4@SiO2@SC-N NPs, respectively, while the superparamagnetic properties of Fe3O4 were maintained. TEM images show a clearly resolved core-shell structure with a silica layer and sequential PLA SC co/polymer coating layers in the respective NPs. The well-designed NPs possess a size distribution in a range of 220-270 nm and high magnetization of 70.8-72.1 emu/g [Fe3O4]. More importantly, a drug release study from the as-constructed stimuli-responsive NPs exhibited sustained release profiles and the rates of release can be tuned by variation of external environments. Further cytotoxicity and cell culture studies revealed that PLA SC coated NPs possessed good cell biocompatibility and the doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded NPs showed enhanced drug delivery efficiency toward MCF-7 cancer cells. Together with the strong magnetic sensitivity, the developed hybrid NPs demonstrate a great potential of control over the drug release at a targeted site. The developed coating method can be further optimized to finely tune the nanocarrier size and operating range of pHs and temperatures for in vivo applications.

Abstract
Nanoscale polymeric micelles have attracted more and more attention as a promising nanocarrier for controlled delivery of antineoplastic drugs. Herein, the doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded poly(D-lactide)-based micelle (PDM/DOX), poly(L-lactide)-based micelle (PLM/DOX), and stereocomplex micelle (SCM/DOX) from the equimolar mixture of the enantiomeric four-armed poly(ethylene glycol)-polylactide (PEG-PLA) copolymers were successfully fabricated. In phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at pH 7.4, SCM/DOX exhibited the smallest hydrodynamic diameter (D h) of 90 ± 4.2 nm and the slowest DOX release compared with PDM/DOX and PLM/DOX. Moreover, PDM/DOX, PLM/DOX, and SCM/DOX exhibited almost stable D hs of around 115, 105, and 90 nm at above normal physiological condition, respectively, which endowed them with great potential in controlled drug delivery. The intracellular DOX fluorescence intensity after the incubation with the laden micelles was different degrees weaker than that incubated with free DOX · HCl within 12 h, probably due to the slow DOX release from micelles. As the incubation time reached to 24 h, all the cells incubated with the laden micelles, especially SCM/DOX, demonstrated a stronger intracellular DOX fluorescence intensity than free DOX · HCl-cultured ones. More importantly, all the DOX-loaded micelles, especially SCM/DOX, exhibited potent antineoplastic efficacy in vitro, excellent serum albumin-tolerance stability, and satisfactory hemocompatibility. These encouraging data indicated that the loading micelles from nonlinear enantiomeric copolymers, especially SCM/DOX, might be promising in clinical systemic chemotherapy through intravenous injection.

Abstract
A series of pH-responsive amphiphilic poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(D-lactic acid)-block-poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) conjugated with poly(ethylene glycol) (D-PDLA-D@PEG) and D-PLLA-D@PEG copolymers were synthesized using a combination of ring-opening polymerization and atom-transfer radical polymerization followed by sequential quaternization of PDMAEMA chains and azide-alkyne click reaction with alkyne-end PEG. Gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrate the successful synthesis of the copolymers, and the conjugated PEG percentages in the copolymers can be tuned by the feeding ratios in the quaternization reaction. Conjugating PEG onto the PDMAEMA segments also successfully facilitated the D-PDLA-D@PEG, D-PLLA-D@PEG, and its corresponding 1:1 D/L mixtures to be dissolved directly in aqueous solution at the desired concentration range without using any organic solvents unlike the copolymers without PEG conjugation (D-PDLA-D and D-PLLA-D). We demonstrate control over micellar size, charge, and stability via three different preparation pathways, i.e., solution pH, percentages of PEG conjugation in the copolymers, and formation of PLA stereocomplex in micellar core. Static and dynamic light scattering studies demonstrate that the size of the core-shell micelles increases when the solution pH is reduced due to the protonation of the PDMAEMA segments that caused the osmotic pressure within the micelle to increase until the micelles reached a maximum size. It is interesting to note that the micelles formed by 1:1 D/L mixtures have larger swelling ratios as well as aggregation number and hydrodynamic radius that do not change significantly with pH and dilution, respectively, as compared to micelles formed from individual D or L forms of the copolymers. The enhanced stability of the pH-responsive micelles prepared by direct dissolution of the 1:1 D/L mixtures of the PEG conjugated PLA-based polyelectrolytes in aqueous medium is attributed to the stereocomplex formation between PLLA and PDLA in the micellar core as confirmed by wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements.

Abstract
Amphiphilic conetworks (APCNs), consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ester acrylate] (PPEGMEA) and hydrophobic stereocomplex of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactide) (PDLA), were prepared by free radical copolymerization of PEGMEA with acrylate macromonomer of the PLA stereocomplex. The effects of stereocomplexation and the amount of PLA stereocomplex on the rheology properties of APCNs were investigated. The results indicated that the APCNs was stronger in the presence of stereocomplexation compared with the that of nonstereocomplex system, and the strength of the APCNs increased with the increasing of the amount of PLA stereocomplex. The storage modulus of the APCNs could be easily tuned from 1200 to 4300 Pa by incorporating 2-10% of stereocomplex PLA. On the other hand, the swelling behavior of APCNs decreased with the increasing content of hydrophobic PLA cross-linker.

Abstract
Biodegradable stereocomplex micelles (SCMs) based on amphiphilic dextran-block-polylactide (Dex-b-PLA) were designed and used for efficient intracellular drug deliveries. The Dex-b-PLA copolymers were successfully synthesized by click reaction. The structures of the resultant copolymers were verified by (1)H NMR and FT-IR spectra. The formation of stable micelles through self-assembly driven by the stereocomplexation between enantiomeric l- and d-PLA blocks was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic laser scattering (DLS), and fluorescence techniques. It was interesting to observe that the SCMs showed lower critical micelle concentration values (CMCs) because of the stereocomplex interaction between PLLA and PDLA. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis provided information on the thermal and crystal properties of the copolymers and SCMs. The improved stability of SCMs should be attractive for intracellular drug delivery. Thus, a model anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded into micelles, and the in vitro drug release in was also studied. The release kinetics of DOX showed DOX-loaded SCMs exhibited slower DOX release. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and flow cytometry studies also showed that the DOX-loaded SCMs exhibited a slower drug release behavior. Meanwhile, the MTT assay demonstrated that DOX-loaded SCMs show lower cellular proliferation inhibition against HepG2. In sum, the micelles through self-assembly driven by stereocomplex interaction would have great potential to be used as stable delivery vehicles for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-histidine)-poly(lactide) (mPEG(45)-PH(30)-PLA(82)) triblock copolymers self-assemble into nanoparticles by sterocomplexation. The properties of the stereocomplex nanoparticles including morphology, stability, and biocompatibility are investigated. The results reveal that the stereocomplexation between PLLA and PDLA segments could prevent the aggregation of the nanoparticles when the pH value is around 6.8. The mean diameter of the stereocomplex nanoparticles is stabilized at about 100 nm when the pH values are changed from 7.9 to 5.0. The cytotoxicity of the stereocomplex nanoparticles is evaluated, and the results demonstrate that the stereocomplexation could decrease the cytotoxicity of the PDLA segments.
