Ultrasonic approach for formation of erbium oxide nanoparticles with variable geometries

Estimation of Calcium Titanate or Erbium Oxide Nanoparticles Induced Cytotoxicity and Genotoxicity in Normal HSF Cells

Extensive uses of calcium titanate nanoparticles (CaTiO₃-NPs) and erbium oxide nanoparticles (Er₂O₃-NPs) increase their release into the environment and human exposure, particularly through skin contact. However, there are almost no studies available on the effect of these nanoparticles on skin integrity. Therefore, this study was undertaken to estimate CaTiO₃-NP- or Er₂O₃-NP-induced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in normal human skin fibroblast (HSF) cells. Cell viability was measured using sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay, while the level of DNA damage was detected using the alkaline comet assay. The intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as the expression level of p53, Bax, and Bcl2 genes were detected. Although the viability of HSF cells was non-markedly changed after 24 h, prolonged treatment with CaTiO3-NPs or Er2O3-NPs for 72 h induced concentration-dependent death of HSF cells. Treatment of normal HSF cells with IC50/72 h of CaTiO3-NPs or Er2O3-NPs did not cause marked changes in the intracellular level of ROS, DNA damage parameters, and expression levels of apoptosis genes compared to their values in the untreated HSF cells. We thus concluded that CaTiO3-NPs or Er2O3-NPs cause time- and concentration-dependent cytotoxicity toward normal HSF cells. However, safe and non-genotoxic effects were demonstrated by the apparent non-significant changes in intracellular ROS level, DNA integrity, and apoptotic genes' expression after exposure of normal HSF cells to nanoparticles. Thus, it is recommended that further studies be conducted to further understand the toxic and biological effects of CaTiO₃-NPs and Er2O3-NPs.

Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride layers decorated with erbium oxide and enhanced photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation

Developing and implementing visible light active organic-inorganic hybrid semiconductor nanomaterials with enhanced photocatalytic properties find newer environmental and energy treatment capabilities. Here, we are reporting polymeric g-C₃N₄ layers coated with different propositions of erbium oxide nanoparticles, characterized using XPS, UV-Vis-DRS, FT-IR, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, elemental mapping, XRD and surface area techniques and its photocatalytic activities were evaluated under visible light irradiations. The hybrid nanocomposite materials possess better crystalline nature and erbium oxide particles were on the surface of polymeric g-C₃N₄. The surface area and bandgap energy of the polymeric g-C₃N₄-erbium oxide (5 wt%) nanohybrid composite were 99.9 m²/g and 2.52 eV. The photocatalytic activities as prepared nanohybrid composites were assessed for the oxidation of orange G dye molecules in the presence of visible light and were highly active in a broader range of pH with the presence of various inorganic anions. The rate of photocatalytic oxidation of dye molecules varied from 4.79 × 10^-4 to 1.77 × 10^-4 min^-1 for the initial concentration of 5 to 20 ppm and retained its activities above 95% up to three cycles of reusability. Hence, the organic-inorganic novel catalytic nanohybrid composite may find more comprehensive applications in the area of environmental and energy applications.

Physicochemical and nanomedicine applications of phyto-reduced erbium oxide (Er2O3) nanoparticles

Hyphaene thebaica fruits were used for the fabrication of spherical erbium oxide nanoparticles (HT-Er₂O₃ NP_S) using a one-step simple bioreduction process. XRD pattern revealed a highly crystalline and pure phase with crystallite size of ~ 7.5 nm, whereas, the W-H plot revealed crystallite size of 11 nm. FTIR spectra revealed characteristic Er-O atomic vibrations in the fingerprint region. Bandgap was obtained as 5.25 eV using K-M function. The physicochemical and morphological nature was established using Raman spectroscopy, reflectance spectroscopy, SAED and HR-TEM. HT-Er₂O₃ NP_S were further evaluated for antidiabetic potential in mice using in-vivo and in-vitro bioassays. The synthesized HT-Er₂O₃ NP_S were screened for in vitro anti-diabetic potentials against α-glucosidase enzyme and α-amylase enzyme and their antioxidant potential was evaluated using DPPH free radical assay. A dose dependent inhibition was obtained against α-glucosidase (IC₅₀ 12 μg/mL) and α-amylase (IC₅₀ 78 μg/mL) while good DPPH free radical scavenging potential (IC₅₀ 78 μg mL^-1) is reported. At 1000 μg/mL, the HT-Er₂O₃ NP_S revealed 90.30% and 92.30% inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. HT-Er₂O₃ NPs treated groups were observed to have better glycemic control in diabetic animals (503.66 ± 5.92*** on day 0 and 185.66 ± 2.60*** on day 21) when compared with positive control glibenclamide treated group. Further, HT-Er₂O₃ NP_S therapy for 21 days caused a considerable effect on serum total lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL as compared to untreated diabetic group. In conclusion, our preliminary findings on HT-Er₂O₃ NP_S revealed considerable antidiabetic potential and thus can be an effective candidate for controlling the post-prandial hyperglycemia. However, further studies are encouraged especially taking into consideration the toxicity aspects of the nanomaterial.

Induction of ROS mediated genomic instability, apoptosis and G0/G1 cell cycle arrest by erbium oxide nanoparticles in human hepatic Hep-G2 cancer cells

The remarkable physical and chemical characteristics of noble metal nanoparticles, such as high surface-to-volume ratio, broad optical properties, ease of assembly, surfactant and functional chemistry, have increased scientific interest in using erbium oxide nanoparticles (Er₂O₃-NPs) and other noble metal nanostructures in cancer treatment. However, the therapeutic effect of Er₂O₃-NPs on hepatic cancer cells has not been studied. Therefore, the current study was conducted to estimate the therapeutic potential of Er₂O₃-NPs on human hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep-G2) cells. Exposure to Er₂O₃-NPs for 72 h inhibited growth and caused death of Hep-G2 cells in a concentration dependent manner. High DNA damage and extra-production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were induced by Er₂O₃-NPs in Hep-G2 cells. As determined by flow cytometry, Er₂O₃-NPs arrested Hep-G2 cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase and markedly increased the number of Hep-G2 cells in the apoptotic and necrotic phases. Moreover, Er₂O₃-NPs caused simultaneous marked increases in expression levels of apoptotic (p53 and Bax) genes and decreased level of anti-apoptotic Bcl2 gene expression level in Hep-G2 cells. Thus it is concluded that Er₂O₃-NPs inhibit proliferation and trigger apoptosis of Hep-G2 cells through the extra ROS generation causing high DNA damage induction and alterations of apoptotic genes. Thus it is recommended that further in vitro and in vivo studies be carried out to study the possibility of using Er2O3-NPs in the treatment of cancer.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone-assisted ultrasonic synthesis of SnO nanosheets and their use as conformal templates for tin dioxide nanostructures

Single crystalline SnO nanosheets with exposed {001} facets have been prepared by an ultrasonic aqueous synthesis in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone, which hinders the spontaneous formation of the truncated bipyramidal SnO microcrystals and exfoliate them into layer-by-layer hierarchical structures and further into separate SnO nanosheets. The SnO nanosheets have been used as conformal sacrificial templates converted into polycrystalline SnO(2), as well as layered SnO/SnO(2) nanostructures, by calcination in air. The concept of fabrication of two-dimensional tin oxide nanostructures demonstrated here may be relevant for the crystal design of layered materials, in general.
