Abstract
The study aimed to create a low loading, high retention, easier to apply O/W mometasone furoate (MF) cream using a chemical enhancer (CE) approach to provide more options for patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and to investigate molecular mechanisms of its increased release and retention. A Box-Behnken design determined the optimal formulation based on stability and in vitro skin retention. Evaluations included appearance, rheological properties, irritation, in vivo tissue distribution and pharmacodynamics. Molecular mechanisms of enhanced release were studied using high-speed centrifugation, molecular dynamics and rheology. The interaction between the CE, MF and skin was studied by tape stripping, CLSM, ATR-FTIR and SAXS. The formulation was optimized to contain 0.05% MF and used 10% polyglyceryl-3 oleate (POCC) as the CE. There was no significant difference from Elocon® cream in in vivo retention and pharmacodynamics but increased in vivo retention by 3.14-fold and in vitro release by 1.77-fold compared to the basic formulation. POCC reduced oil phase cohesive energy density, enhancing drug mobility and release. It disrupted skin lipid phases, aiding drug entry and formed hydrogen bonds, prolonging retention. This study highlights POCC as a CE in the cream, offering insights for semi-solid formulation development.

Abstract
The cyclodextrin (CD)-based emulsions exhibit complex instability behaviors such as rapid flocculation and creaming, and how to capture droplet dispersion states of the emulsions remains a great challenge. Here we prepare the CD-based emulsions with different oil-water volume ratios and CD concentrations by using high-pressure homogenization, and characterize the emulsion droplets by using optical microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. We evaluate the effects of homogenization pressure on the stability of the emulsions, identify armored droplets with different surface features, measure interfacial concentrations of adsorbed ICs microcrystals, and observe ejection of the oil/CD inclusion complexes (ICs) microcrystals from the droplet surface. The droplet dispersion states are sensitive to the dynamic buildup and evolving morphologies of the interfacial microcrystals, and there are clear correlations between the properties of the ejected microcrystals and the characteristics of the emulsions. We ascribe the subsequent ejection of ICs microcrystals from the droplet surface to consolidation and deformation of the films formed between neighboring droplets. The ejection of the ICs microcrystals affords a simple method to detect the droplet-droplet interactions and phase transitions in the CD-based emulsions, which might be a generic feature in the broader context of the creaming processes of emulsions.

Abstract
The emulsion-based topical semisolid dosage forms present a high degree of complexity due to their microstructures which is apparent from their compositions comprising at least two immiscible liquid phases, often times of high viscosity. These complex microstructures are thermodynamically unstable, and the physical stability of such preparations is governed by formulation parameters such as phase volume ratio, type of emulsifiers and their concentration, HLB value of the emulsifier, as well as by process parameters such as homogenizer speed, time, temperature etc. Therefore, a detailed understanding of the microstructure in the DP and critical factors that influence the stability of emulsions is essential to ensure the quality and shelf-life of emulsion-based topical semisolid products. This review aims to provide an overview of the main strategies used to stabilize pharmaceutical emulsions contained in semisolid products and various characterization techniques and tools that have been utilized so far to evaluate their long-term stability. Accelerated physical stability assessment using dispersion analyzer tools such as an analytical centrifuge to predict the product shelf-life has been discussed. In addition, mathematical modeling for phase separation rate for non-Newtonian systems like semisolid emulsion products has also been discussed to guide formulation scientists to predict a priori stability of these products.

Abstract
Polysaccharide-based soft colloidal particles mediated by the dynamic bonding-engineered interfacial self-assembly can regulate the properties of oil-water interfacial films, availing the stability of emulsions under a wide pH range. The amphiphilic phenylboronic alginate soft colloidal particles (Alg-PBA) were designed to stabilize pH-responsive Pickering emulsions (PEs). Combining stability analysis with quartz crystal microbalance and dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), the microstructure and viscoelasticity of Alg-PBA at the oil-water interface were determined. The results showed that PEs stabilized by Alg-PBA due to a thicker and stronger viscoelastic interface film induced by BO bonds and hydrogen bonds. The structure-function relationship of the Alg-PBA emulsifier driven by dynamic bonds was further elaborated at multiple scales by laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Meanwhile, the microstructure of aerogels templated by emulsion could be tuned by adjusting dynamic bonds, which provides a new idea for polysaccharide soft material engineering.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Cyclodextrin (CD) can spontaneously build up the solid particle membrane with CD-oil inclusion complexes (ICs) by a self-assembly process. Sodium casein (SC) is expected to preferentially adsorb at the interface to transform the type of interfacial film. The high-pressure homogenization can increase interfacial contact opportunities of the components, which promote the phase transition of the interfacial film. EXPERIMENTS We added SC by sequential and simultaneous orders to mediate the assembly model of the CD-based films, examined the patterns in which the films adopt phase transitions to retard emulsion flocculation, and studied the physic-chemical properties of the emulsions and films from the structural arrest, interface tension, interfacial rheology, linear rheology, and nonlinear viscoelasticities through Fourier transform (FT)-rheology and Lissajous-Bowditch plots. FINDINGS The interfacial and large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) rheological results showed that the films changed from jammed to unjammed. We divide the unjammed films into two types: one is SC dominated liquid-like film, which is fragile and related to droplet coalescence; the other is cohesive SC-CD film, which helps droplet rearrangement and retards droplet flocculation. Our results highlight the potential of mediating phase transformation of interfacial films to improve emulsion stability.

Abstract
Interfacial-active quaternized glucan of curdlan (QCD) with different degrees of substitution (DS) was prepared and used as stabilizers of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions at different concentrations. The adsorption behavior of QCDs, rheology of bulk emulsions and interfacial films, emulsion morphology, and stability were investigated. The emulsifying capacity of QCD was essentially related to the viscoelastic features of the interfacial film and the continuous phase and the electrostatic repulsion among oil droplets. QCD molecules with different DS form structurally different interfacial films. The high-DS QCD formed a viscously predominant interfacial film with certain hydrophobicity, whereas the low-DS QCD molecules formed an elastically predominant film characterized by hydrogen bonds among adsorbed chains. The structuralization of low-DS QCD molecules through physical cross-linking in bulk and interfacial films at high concentrations was conducive to emulsion stability. Excess QCD chains in the bulk formed a weak gel-like network, further hindering the movement of droplets in the emulsions. Relevant emulsification and stability mechanisms were proposed. Finally, the stability of curcumin encapsulated in O/W emulsions was evaluated.

Abstract
Pickering emulsions endow attractive features and a wide versatility in both food and nonfood fields. In the last decades, a noticeable interest has emerged toward the use of octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA)-starch to improve the long-term stability in such systems. In this review, instabilities were pointed out, where a new kinetic equilibrium was observed in Pickering emulsions assigned to migration and size variations of particles. These features were monitored using rheological measurements to understand microstructure and droplets mobility. The elastic modulus (G'), the viscous modulus (G″), and tan(δ) values were attributed to the transition from solid to fluid and assigned to the instability of the formulation regardless of the type of the system configuration. The novelties in using OSA-modified starch, were also exposed. The chemical modification of starch decreased creaming for months. Interaction between OSA-modified starches and some ionic components (potassium, magnesium, and calcium) as well as hydrocolloids and proteins reduced creaming and coalescence due to dense interfacial film. Furthermore, the key parameters (oil fraction, fatty acids composition, oxidative stress oil polarity, and oil viscosity) that govern oil phase in Pickering emulsion, were analyzed. These parameters were found to be positively correlated to the stability of Pickering emulsions.

Abstract
The present work was to construct a roflumilast (ROF) cream for the treatment of psoriasis and clarify the dual roles of propylene glycol monocaprylate (PGM) in both molecular mobility of the cream, and drug-skin miscibility via drug-PGM-ceramide and drug-PGM-collagen intermolecular interaction. The cream formulation was screened through the stability study and in vitro skin administration study, optimized by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken design, and finally verified by the in vivo tissue distribution study. PGM demonstrated a significant drug skin retention enhancement effect (Rmax in vivo = 19.5 μg/g). It increased the molecular mobility of the oil phase of the cream by decreasing the molecular interaction of oil molecules proven by the rheology study (Ec = 3.73 × 10-4 mJ·m-3). More importantly, because of the good stratum corneum (SC) compatibility (∆H = - 403.88 J/g), PGM promoted an orderly flow of SC lipids (X-ray scattering, ΔLPP = 1.18 nm) and entered the viable epidermis/dermis (VE/DE) in large quantities (RPGM = 1186 μg/g), acting as a bridge to connect the drug to collagen through two H-bonds (LengthH-bond = 2.846 Å and 3.313 Å), thus increasing the miscibility of drug and VE/DE significantly (∆H = - 310.10 J/g, Emix = 21.66 kcal/mol). In this study, a ROF cream was developed successfully and the effect of PGM on the skin retention was clarified at molecular level.

Abstract
Polymers are desirable to improve emulsion stability by stuffing them into the continuous phase. How to get information on the droplet dispersion states of the emulsions remains a challenge, as the emulsion characteristics are dictated by two intertwining components, the polymer matrix and the droplets. Herein, we use an amphiphilic polymer, gum arabic (GA), to mediate the droplet flocculation of cyclodextrin (CD)-based emulsions and compare them with our previous studies on the stabilization of CD-based emulsions by a nonamphiphilic polymer, methylcellulose (MC). We characterize the emulsions by using optical microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and laser particle analysis, explore their rheological behavior through large-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, and analyze the nonlinear viscoelasticities through Fourier transform (FT)-rheology and Lissajous-Bowditch plots. There is a great difference between GA and MC in the viscosity effect and the arrangement around emulsion droplets. GA is not an effective flocculation inhibitor due to a bridging flocculation mechanism rather than a direct viscosity effect. Our analysis highlights the role of the intrinsic nonlinearity parameter (Q0) extracted by FT analysis in reflecting the droplet dispersion states of the emulsions by decoupling structural contributions from the polymers and the emulsion droplets.

Abstract
Polymeric lipid hybrid nanoparticles (PLHNs) are the new generation of drug delivery systems that has emerged as a combination of a polymeric core and lipid shell. We designed and optimized a simple method for the preparation of Pluronic F-127-based PLHNs able to load separately demethoxycurcumin (DMC) and bisdemethoycurcumin (BDM). CUR was used as a model compound due to its greater availability from turmeric and its structure similarity with DMC and BDM. The developed method produced DMC and BDM-loaded PLHNs with a size average of 75.55 ± 0.51 and 15.13 ± 0.014 nm for DMC and BDM, respectively. An FT-IR analysis confirmed the encapsulation and TEM images showed their spherical shape. Both formulations achieved an encapsulation efficiency ≥ 92% and an exhibited significantly increased release from the PLHN compared with free compounds in water. The antioxidant activity was enhanced as well, in agreement with the improvement in water dissolution; obtaining IC50 values of 12.74 ± 0.09 and 16.03 ± 0.55 for DMC and BDM-loaded PLHNs, respectively, while free curcuminoids exhibited considerably lower antioxidant values in an aqueous solution. Hence, the optimized PHLN synthesis method using CUR as a model and then successfully applied to obtain DMC and BDM-loaded PLHNs can be extended to curcuminoids and molecules with a similar backbone structure to improve their bioactivities.

Abstract
The creaming behavior of an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion was quantitatively evaluated via resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Styrene O/W emulsions were prepared with initial styrene concentrations of 1 and 4 g/L, and the height at the center of the sample was monitored. A peak area of the molecular ion of styrene was set as the signal intensity, for which a time profile was constructed from a series of mass spectra. As a result, the averaged time profiles showed that the signal intensities increased once and then decreased with the onset of creaming. In addition, in order to fit an experimentally obtained time profile, a modified fit function was proposed. Based on the fit results, the ratios of the increases and decreases in signal intensities were different between the two emulsions-higher in the case of an O/W emulsion with a higher initial oil concentration. On the other hand, the duration of the enhancement of the signal intensity with the onset of creaming was independent of the initial oil concentration. The present method offers the possibility to quantitatively evaluate the creaming behavior of an emulsion without pretreatment, and, therefore, would be useful for confirming the stability and quality assurance of emulsions.

Abstract
We describe an experimental study of soft solids composed of micron-scale lipid bilayer vesicles that adhere to one another through electrostatic attraction to an oppositely charged polymer (PDADMAC). As the polymer concentration was increased, we found a fluid phase, a solid gel phase, and a gel composed of internally reorganized vesicles. Optical microscopy images showed a nearly close-packed structure of adhered vesicles that retained their closed-cell morphology. Shear rheology measurements showed that the gel phase is a solid with a modulus at the Pa scale and with linear response up to 70% strain. We found that the modulus depends on the energy per area of membrane-membrane adhesion but does not depend on the vesicle size. We further found that the gels survived osmotic stress or dilution of the adhering polymer but could be rapidly disrupted in response to the addition of strongly binding silica nanoparticles. These results demonstrate the potential for cell-sized lipid vesicles to form a solid platform that maintains the responsive properties of the membranes. Such materials may find applications as triggerable, protective coatings of delicate surfaces.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin (CD)-based emulsions have a characteristic of rapid droplet flocculation, which limits their application as functional material templates, so it is very important to improve the stability of CD-based emulsions. In this study, we select bacterial cellulose (BC) as a nonadsorbing inhibitor to prevent flocculation of CD-based emulsions. We map a phase diagram of the aqueous dispersions of CD inclusion complexes (ICs) and BC from morphological observations and investigate the effects of BC on properties of the IC-laden films. We further explore the effects of BC concentration on the stability of the CD-based emulsions and investigate rheological behavior of the emulsions through large-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments. It shows that BC can effectively suppress the flocculation of CD-based emulsion droplets even at a concentration as low as 0.01 wt %. We propose that BC has dual effects from bulk and interfacial contributions on increasing emulsion stability. At low concentrations, BC mainly results in higher packing density of ICs on the emulsion droplet surface through excluded volume repulsion, and at high concentrations, BC creates a network structure that confines the motion of emulsion droplets and retards flocculation.

Abstract
We found experimentally that the elasticity of sunflower oil-in-water emulsions (SFO-in-W) stabilized by Yucca Schidigera Roezl saponin extract, is by >50 times higher as compared to the elasticity of common emulsions. We revealed that strong specific interactions between the phytosterols from the non-purified oil and the saponins from the Yucca extract lead to the formation of nanostructured adsorption layers which are responsible for the very high elasticity of the oil-water interface and of the respective bulk emulsions. Remarkably, this extra high emulsion elasticity inhibits the emulsion syneresis even at 65 vol% of the oil drops - these emulsions remain homogeneous and stable even after 30 days of shelf-storage. These results demonstrate that the combination of saponin and phytosterols is a powerful new approach to structure oil-in-water emulsions with potential applications for formulating healthier functional food.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Saponins are natural surfactants which can provide highly viscoelastic interfaces. This property can be used to quantify precisely the effect of interfacial dilatational elasticity on the various rheological properties of bulk emulsions. EXPERIMENTS We measured the interfacial dilatational elasticity of adsorption layers from four saponins (Quillaja, Escin, Berry, Tea) adsorbed on hexadecane-water and sunflower oil-water interfaces. In parallel, the rheological properties under steady and oscillatory shear deformations were measured for bulk emulsions, stabilized by the same saponins (oil volume fraction between 75 and 85%). FINDINGS Quillaja saponin and Berry saponin formed solid adsorption layers (shells) on the SFO-water interface. As a consequence, the respective emulsions contained non-spherical drops. For the other systems, the interfacial elasticities varied between 2 mN/m and 500 mN/m. We found that this interfacial elasticity has very significant impact on the emulsion shear elasticity, moderate effect on the dynamic yield stress, and no effect on the viscous stress of the respective steadily sheared emulsions. The last conclusion is not trivial, because the dilatational surface viscoelasticity is known to have strong impact on the viscous stress of steadily sheared foams. Mechanistic explanations of all observed effects are described.

Abstract
A number of food products exist, in part or entirely, as emulsions, while others are present in an emulsified state at some point during their production/formation. Mayonnaise, butter, margarine, salad dressing, whipped cream, and ice cream represent some of the typical examples of emulsion-based foods. Controlled by both formulation and processing aspects, the emulsion architecture that is formed ultimately determines many of the attributes of the final food product. This chapter initially provides an overview of the basic constituents of emulsions and their influence on the microstructure and stability of conventional as well as more complex systems. The available spectrum of processing routes and characterization techniques currently utilized (or emerging) within the area of emulsions is then discussed. The chapter concludes with a concise outline of the relationship between food emulsion microstructure design and its performance (textural, rheological, sensorial, etc.).

Abstract
Producing structural viscosity in colloidal dispersions, such as vesicles and capsules, prevents separation of dispersed particles by increasing the viscosity between them, which is advantageous in terms of usability. So far, the separation behavior of various particles has been studied; however, there are very few examples wherein a stable dispersion state was constructed and controlled. In this study, we produced stable dispersions induced by the depletion effect in mixtures of vesicles of cationic surfactant derived from triethanolamine-based esterquat (TEQ) and a specific dextrin derivative (SDD) as a non-adsorptive polymer. In the composition region, where 8 to 16% of TEQ vesicles and 1.2% or less of SDDs were mixed, the viscosity increased proportionally with the particle concentration, and it was observed that stable dispersions were produced by structural viscosity. Furthermore, the effects of TEQ and SDD concentrations, and SDD size on the structural viscosity and cohesive energy were investigated, which were similar to the depletion effect in the Asakura-Oosawa (AO) theory. From the results, it was suggested that the structural viscosity of the mixed dispersions (TEQ vesicles and SDDs) was produced by the aggregated TEQ vesicle networks induced by the depletion flocculation.

Abstract
Thermal superinsulating properties of biobased materials are investigated via the structuration of aerogels through a biphasic system. Highly stable Pickering emulsions are produced using TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (NFC) adsorbed at an oil/water interface. NFCs form an entangled system of clusters of droplets that lead to excellent mechanical properties. The emulsions produced are strong gels that are further used as template to form aerogels. The freeze-dried emulsions result in porous bioaerogels with extremely low densities (0.012-0.030 g/cm3). We describe a hierarchical morphology with three levels of porosity: an alveolar organization of larger macropores due to ice crystals, spherical smaller macropores induced by the emulsion template, and mesoporous domains localized at the pore walls level. The low-density bioaerogels have compression moduli as high as 1.5 MPa and can be deformed up to 60% strain before the structure collapse. NFC aerogels have thermal superinsulating properties; the lowest thermal conductivity obtained is 0.018 W/(m·K). In the context of the development of sustainable materials, we demonstrate that NFC-stabilized Pickering emulsions are excellent templates to produce fully biobased, mechanically strong thermal superinsulating materials.

Abstract
Freeze drying and re-dispersibility of oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions is important from the perspective of storage, transportation and usability. A set of stable and re-dispersible o/w emulsions using polyacryloyl hydrazide (PAHz) capped Ag nanoparticles (NP) as the stabilizer is reported in which the NP size (Davg) and PAHz concentration collectively controlled the stability and re-dispersibility of the emulsion system. O/w emulsions prepared using different concentrations of PAHz (0.05-0.25 g mL-1) and sizes of Ag NPs (10-25 nm) were analyzed by DLS, IFT, contact angle, SEM, and rheological studies. The emulsion stabilized by 0.05 g mL-1 of PAHz and Ag NPs (Davg ≈ 20 nm, 5 wt% PAHz-Ag NPs) was unstable against coalescence, exhibited maximum oil leakage during freeze-drying and lacked re-dispersibility. The stability of the Pickering emulsions was inversely proportional to the Davg of the Ag NPs. The presence of Ag NPs possessing Davg ≈ 10 nm and 0.25 g mL-1 of PAHz in the aqueous phase (25 wt% PAHz-Ag NPs) stabilized the Pickering emulsions for up to 30 days without any sign of creaming and the oil powders (oil content ≈ 98%) obtained after freeze drying exhibited adequate re-dispersibility in aqueous media. In addition, the emulsion stabilized by 25 wt% PAHz-Ag NPs showed maximum recovery of the viscosity value after re-dispersion and exhibited similar shear-thinning behavior to that of the original sample. Furthermore, the trends of moduli vs. frequency for the re-dispersed samples were similar to that of the original samples suggesting that the structural arrangements between Ag NPs and oil droplets were least affected by the drying process. Thus, we conclude that o/w emulsions stabilized by PAHz-Ag NPs can be a potential alternative to produce stable oil powders or gels for industrial applications.

Abstract
Emulsions are broadly used in pharmaceutics either as intermediate products or as final dosage forms. Such disperse systems are only kinetically stabilized and therefore early detection of physical instability is highly desirable. This work employed diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) to study a series of model emulsions that were categorized, based on their composition, as either "simple" or "complex". DWS data were compared with results of droplet size imaging, apparent viscosity obtained by microfluidics, and near-infrared (NIR) analytical centrifugation. A mathematical model of the droplet mean square displacement (MSD) was modified by us regarding improved fitting of experimental data. Although the emulsions showed different types of instability like creaming and sedimentation, a good rank correlation was found between the DWS parameters and results from the comparative stability methods. Our findings indicate that DWS provides a highly attractive method for stability analysis of pharmaceutical emulsions because it requires only low sample volumes, is rapid and non-invasive. The proposed data modeling provides the means for a better understanding of emulsion microstructure that in turn will help designing quality into pharmaceutical dispersions.

Abstract
We review advances that have been made in the rheology of concentrated emulsions and nanoemulsions, which can serve as model soft materials that have highly tunable viscoelastic properties at droplet volume fractions near and above the glass transition and jamming point. As revealed by experiments, simulations, and theoretical models, interfacial and positional structures of droplets can depend on the applied flow history and osmotic pressure that an emulsion has experienced, thereby influencing its key rheological properties such as viscoelastic moduli, yield stress and strain, and flow behavior. We emphasize studies of monodisperse droplets, since these have led to breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of dispersed soft matter. This review also covers the rheological properties of attractive emulsions, which can exhibit a dominant elasticity even at droplet volume fractions far below maximal random jamming of hard spheres.

Abstract
Caprylic and capric acids are classified as medium-chain fatty acids. In this study, the behavior of the caprylic and capric acids formulations containing octyl salicylate were investigated. The formulations were prepared using homogenization proses. The characteristics of the formulation such as particle size, flow behavior, microscopic view and absorbance of the formulations were investigated. Particle sizes of the formulations were found ranging from 352.7 - 704.2 nm. The viscosity of the formulations changed as the shear rate was varied and could be classified as non-Newtonian fluids. The viscosity decreases when the fluid undergoes longer shear stress with time. The formulations containing octyl salicylate shows higher absorbance as compared to the formulations without octyl salicylate. The addition of octyl salicylate affected the system in terms of behavior, appearance and stability

Abstract
Fullerene nanoemulsions were formulated in palm kernel oil esters stabilized by low amount of mixed nonionic surfactants. Pseudoternary phase diagrams were established in the colloidal system of PKOEs/Tween 80 : Span 80/water incorporated with fullerene as antioxidant. Preformulation was subjected to combination of high and low energy emulsification methods and the physicochemical characteristics of fullerene nanoemulsions were analyzed using electroacoustic spectrometer. Oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions with particle sizes in the range of 70–160 nm were formed. The rheological characteristics of colloidal systems exhibited shear thinning behavior which fitted well into the power law model. The effect of xanthan gum (0.2–1.0%, w/w) and beeswax (1–3%, w/w) in the estimation of thermodynamics was further studied. From the energetic parameters calculated for the viscous flow, a moderate energy barrier for transport process was observed. Thermodynamic study showed that the enthalpy was positive in all xanthan gum and beeswax concentrations indicating that the formation of nanoemulsions could be endothermic in nature. Fullerene nanoemulsions with 0.6% or higher xanthan gum content were found to be stable against creaming and flocculation when exposed to extreme environmental conditions.
