Structural changes in layers of lipid mixtures at low surface tensions

Layers of pulmonary lipids on an aqueous substrate at non-equilibrium conditions can decrease the surface tension of water to quite low values. This is connected with different relaxation processes occurring at the interface and the associated changes in the surface layer structure. Results of measurements by the combination of methods like surface rheology, ellipsometry, Brewster angle microscopy, and IRRAS for spread layers of lipid mixtures open a possibility to specify the dynamics of structural changes at conditions close to the physiological state. At sufficiently low surface tension values (below 5 mN/m) significant changes in the ellipsometric signal were observed for pure DPPC layers, which can be related to a transition from 2D to 3D structures caused by the layer folding. The addition of other lipids can accelerate the relaxation processes connected with squeezing-out of molecules or multilayer stacks formation hampering thereby a decrease of surface tension down to low values corresponding to the folding of the monolayer.

Contact line relaxation of sessile drops on PDMS surfaces: A methodological perspective

HYPOTHESIS

Characterization of contact angle hysteresis on soft surfaces is sensitive to the measurement protocol and might present adventitious time-dependencies. Contact line dynamics on solid surfaces is altered by the surface chemistry, surface roughness and/or surface elasticity. We observed a "slow" spontaneous relaxation of static water sessile drops placed on elastic surfaces. This unexpected drop motion reveals unresolved equilibrium configurations that may affect the observed values of contact angle hysteresis. Drop relaxation on deformable surfaces is partially governed by a viscoelastic dissipation located at the contact line.

EXPERIMENTS

In this work, we studied the natural relaxation of water drops formed on several smooth PDMS surfaces with different elastic moduli. We monitored in time the contact angle and contact radius of each drop. For varying the initial contact angle, we used the growing-shrinking drop method.

FINDINGS

We postulate that the so-called "braking effect", produced by the surface deformability, affects the contact line velocity and in consequence, the contact angle measurements. We conclude that the wetting properties of elastic surfaces should be properly examined with reliable values of contact angle measured after drop relaxation.

Role of interfacial elasticity for the rheological properties of saponin-stabilized emulsions

HYPOTHESIS

Saponins are natural surfactants which can provide highly viscoelastic interfaces. This property can be used to quantify precisely the effect of interfacial dilatational elasticity on the various rheological properties of bulk emulsions.

EXPERIMENTS

We measured the interfacial dilatational elasticity of adsorption layers from four saponins (Quillaja, Escin, Berry, Tea) adsorbed on hexadecane-water and sunflower oil-water interfaces. In parallel, the rheological properties under steady and oscillatory shear deformations were measured for bulk emulsions, stabilized by the same saponins (oil volume fraction between 75 and 85%).

FINDINGS

Quillaja saponin and Berry saponin formed solid adsorption layers (shells) on the SFO-water interface. As a consequence, the respective emulsions contained non-spherical drops. For the other systems, the interfacial elasticities varied between 2 mN/m and 500 mN/m. We found that this interfacial elasticity has very significant impact on the emulsion shear elasticity, moderate effect on the dynamic yield stress, and no effect on the viscous stress of the respective steadily sheared emulsions. The last conclusion is not trivial, because the dilatational surface viscoelasticity is known to have strong impact on the viscous stress of steadily sheared foams. Mechanistic explanations of all observed effects are described.

Controlling the lifetime of antibubbles

An antibubble is a liquid droplet wrapped by a thin layer of gas, inside a bulk liquid usually of the same composition. The lifetime of an antibubble is governed by the drainage of the gas between the two liquid-gas interfaces populated by surfactants. Depending on the relative magnitude of surface viscosity and elastic moduli, which directly depend on or are determined by the nature of surfactants, the lifetime of an antibubble may vary a lot, from few seconds to few minutes. While such a difference can be predicted with models that include the role of interfacial properties, they were not observed experimentally in previous studies, due to important sources of dispersion. In this review, the main sources of dispersion are identified, such as (i) the initial amount of gas embedded in the antibubble, (ii) the level of saturation of gas in the bulk liquid, (iii) the presence of dust particles (<0.5 μm) in the gas, and (iv) three-dimensional flow effects. By accounting for these various effects, we obtain a coherent view on the lifetime of an antibubble, as a function of its radius and the surface rheology, with excellent consistency between experiments and modeling. Results thus demonstrate that controlling the size and lifetime of antibubbles is achievable.

Interfacial rheology of low interfacial tension systems using a new oscillating spinning drop method

When surfactants adsorb at liquid interfaces, they not only decrease the surface tension, they confer rheological properties to the interfaces. There are two types of rheological parameters associated to interfacial layers: compression and shear. The elastic response is described by a storage modulus and the dissipation by a loss modulus or equivalently a surface viscosity. Various types of instruments are available for the measurements of these coefficients, the most common being oscillating pendent drops instruments and rheometers equipped with bicones. These instruments are applicable to systems with large enough interfacial tensions, typically above a few mN/m. We use a new type of instrument based on spinning drop oscillations, allowing to extend the interfacial rheology studies to low and ultralow interfacial tension systems. We present examples of measurements with systems of high and low tension, discuss the possible artifacts and demonstrate the capability of this new technique. We emphasize that the data shown for low interfacial tensions are the first reported in the literature. The instrument is potentially interesting for instance in enhanced oil recovery or demulsification studies.

Fabrication of Elasticity-Tunable Gelatinous Gel for Mesenchymal Stem Cell Culture

Surface elasticity or stiffness of an underlying substrate may regulate cellular functions such as adhesion, proliferation, signaling, differentiation, and migration. Recent studies have reported on the development of biomaterials to control stem cell fate determination via the stiffness of the culture substrates. In this chapter, we provide a detailed protocol for fabricating elasticity-tunable gelatinous hydrogels for stem cell culture with photo-induced or thermo-induced crosslinking of well-developed styrenated gelatin (StG). We also include the detailed application of gelatinous gel for mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) culture and sample collection for transcriptional and proteomic analysis.

An investigation of bubble coalescence and post-rupture oscillation in non-ionic surfactant solutions using high-speed cinematography

Most processes involving bubbling in a liquid require small bubbles to maximise mass/energy transfer. A common method to prevent bubbles from coalescing is by the addition of surfactants. In order to get an insight into the coalescence process, capillary bubbles were observed using a high speed cinematography. Experiments were performed in solutions of 1-pentanol, 4-methyl-2-pentanol, tri(propylene glycol) methyl ether, and poly(propylene glycol) for which information such as the coalescence time and the deformation of the resultant bubble upon coalescence was extracted. It is shown in this study that the coalescence time increases with surfactant concentration until the appearance of a plateau. The increase in coalescence time with surfactant concentration could not be attributed only to surface elasticity. The oscillation of the resultant bubble was characterised by the damping of the oscillation. The results suggested that a minimum elasticity is required to achieve an increased damping and considerable diffusion has a detrimental effect on the dynamic response of the bubble, thereby reducing the damping.
