Multimode resonances in silver nanocuboids

Seeded Growth of Size-Tunable Au@Ag Core-Shell Nano-Octahedra and Their Yolk-Shell Derivatives for Near Infrared Photothermal Conversion

Gold-based nanostructures with well-defined morphologies and hollow interiors have significant potential as a versatile platform for various plasmonic applications including biomedical diagnostics and sensing. In this study, we report the synthesis of Au@Ag core-shell nanocrystals with perfect octahedral shapes and tunable edge lengths via seeded growth. These nanocrystals were then oxidatively carved into yolk-shell nanocages with a retained octahedral morphology. The increase in octahedral edge length and volume of the interior hollow cavity synergistically leads to a red-shift of the LSPR peak. As a result, the optimized Au@AuAg yolk-shell octahedral nanocages showed a remarkable temperature increase of 23 °C upon 15 min irradiation of an 808 nm laser at a power density of 1 W cm-2. This study provides a feasible strategy for creating octahedral AuAg nanostructures with tunable sizes and hollow interiors and validates their promising use in NIR photothermal conversion.

Gold-Silver Core-Shell Nanoparticle Crosslinking Mediated by Protease Activity for Colorimetric Enzyme Detection

Plasmonic nanoparticles produce a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) under optical excitation. The LSPR of nanoparticles can shift in response to changes in the local dielectric environment and produce a color change. This color change can be observed by the naked eye due to the exceptionally large extinction coefficients (10⁸-10¹¹ M^-1 cm^-1) of plasmonic nanoparticles. Herein, we investigate the optical shifts (i.e., color change) of three unique gold-silver core-shell nanoparticle structures in response to changes in their dielectric environment upon nanoparticle aggregation. Aggregation is induced by a cysteine-containing peptide that has a sulfhydryl near its N and C termini, which crosslinks nanoparticles. Furthermore, we demonstrate that adding proline spacers between the cysteines impacts the degree of aggregation and, ultimately, the color response. Using this information, we construct a colorimetric enzyme assay, where the signal produced from nanoparticle aggregation is modulated by proteolysis. The degree of aggregation and the resulting optical shift can be correlated with enzyme concentration with high linearity (R² = 0.998). Overall, this study explores the optical properties of gold-silver core-shell nanoparticles in a dispersed vs aggregated state and leverages that information to develop an enzyme sensor with a spectral LOD of 0.47 ± 0.09 nM.

The Quest for Zero Loss: Unconventional Materials for Plasmonics

There has been an ongoing quest to optimize the materials used to build plasmonic devices: first the elements were investigated, then alloys and intermetallic compounds, later semiconductors were considered, and, most recently, there has been interest in using more exotic materials such as topological insulators and conducting oxides. The quality of the plasmon resonances in these materials is closely correlated with their structure and properties. In general gold and silver are the most commonly specified materials for these applications but they do have weaknesses. Here, it is shown how, in specific circumstances, the selection of certain other materials might be more useful. Candidate alternatives include Ti_x N, VO₂ , Al, Cu, Al-doped ZnO, and Cu-Al alloys. The relative merits of these choices and the many pitfalls and subtle problems that arise are discussed, and a frank perspective on the field is provided.

Bimetallic plasmonic Au@Ag nanocuboids for rapid and sensitive detection of phthalate plasticizers with label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Phthalate plasticizers (PAEs) are posing a serious threat to human health, so it is urgent to develop effective and reliable ways to detect the food additives PAEs sensitively. In this study, we have reported plasmonic bimetallic Au@Ag core-shell nanocuboids for the rapid and sensitive detection of PAEs in liquor samples with a label-free Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) strategy. Compared with single-element nanostructures, the bimetallic SERS platform can integrate two distinct functions into a single entity with unprecedented properties. Consequently, we synthesized Au@Ag nanocuboids (Au@Ag NCs) composed of a Au nanorod (Au NR) core and a Ag cuboid shell, which could produce richer and broader plasmonic resonance modes than Au NRs. It is obvious that the SERS signals of crystal violet (CV) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) reached a maximum as the thickness of the Ag coating shell was in a certain threshold and there was a strong dependence of the Raman enhancement on the Ag cuboid shell-thickness. Based on the optimized size, the sensitivity and repeatability of Au@Ag NCs were evaluated with limits of detection (LODs) at around 10^-9 M both for BBP and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). In addition, the SERS active substrate core-shell Au@Ag NCs can be used to detect BBP as low as 1.3 mg kg^-1 spiked into the liquor samples. Thereby, the unique bimetallic Au@Ag NCs showed a huge potential for the rapid and sensitive detection of PAEs in liquor samples.

Controlling the symmetry of supercrystals formed by plasmonic core-shell nanorods with tunable cross-section

Tailoring the crystal structure of plasmonic nanoparticle superlattices is a crucial step in controlling the collective physical response of these nanostructured materials. Various strategies can achieve this goal for isotropic nanoparticles, but few of them have been successful with anisotropic building blocks. In this work we use hybrid particles, consisting of gold nanorods encased in silver shells with a thickness that can be controlled from a few atomic layers to tens of nanometers. The particles were synthesized, characterized by a combination of techniques and assembled into supercrystals with a smectic B configuration, i.e. a 2D in-plane periodic order without interplane lateral correlations. We showed that, by tuning the silver shell thickness, the in-plane order can be changed from hexagonal to square and the lattice parameters can be adjusted. The spatial distribution of the supercrystal was systematically studied by optical and electron microscopy and by small-angle X-ray scattering. Through optimized surface chemistry, we obtain homogeneous, millimeter-size films of standing nanoparticles, which hold promise for all applications using plasmon-enhanced technologies.

Construction of optimized Au@Ag core-shell nanorods for ultralow SERS detection of antibiotic levofloxacin molecules

The abuse of antibiotics in animal husbandry has been regarded as a daunting public health risk, facilitating the emergence and spread of resistant pathogens to humans. Herein, bimetallic Au@Ag core-shell nanorods (NRs) with precise, controllable Ag shell-thickness (2.1~14.1 nm) were fabricated and developed for ultralow detection of levofloxacin molecules using surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS). We found that the Au@Ag NRs with 7.3 nm Ag shell-thickness provided maximized SERS activity in comparison with other as-prepared nanosubstrates in this paper. The detection limit of levofloxacin molecules was achieved at a nanomole (nM) level of 0.37 ng/L (10^-9 M), providing ultrasensitive assessment of antibiotics in natural ecosystems.

Phase behaviour of hard board-like particles

We examine the phase behaviour of colloidal suspensions of hard board-like particles (HBPs) as a function of their shape anisotropy, and observe a fascinating spectrum of nematic, smectic, and columnar liquid-crystalline phases, whose formation is entirely driven by excluded volume effects. We map out the phase diagram of short and long HBPs by gradually modifying their shape from prolate to oblate and investigate the long-range order of the resulting morphologies along the phase directors and perpendicularly to them. The intrinsic biaxial nature of these particles promotes the formation of translationally ordered biaxial phases, but does not show solid evidence that it would, per se, promote the formation of the biaxial nematic phase. Our simulations shed light on the controversial existence of the discotic smectic phase, whose layers are as thick as the minor particle dimension, which is stable in a relatively large portion of our phase diagrams. Additionally, we modify the Onsager theory to describe the isotropic-nematic phase transition of freely rotating biaxial particles as a function of the particle width, and find a relatively strong first-order signature, in excellent agreement with our simulations. In an attempt to shed light on the elusive formation of the biaxial nematic phase, we apply this theory to predict the uniaxial-biaxial nematic phase transition and confirm, again in agreement with simulations, the prevailing stability of the translationally ordered smectic phase over the orientationally ordered biaxial nematic phase.

Shape-Specific Patterning of Polymer-Functionalized Nanoparticles

Chemically and topographically patterned nanoparticles (NPs) with dimensions on the order of tens of nanometers have a diverse range of applications and are a valuable system for fundamental research. Recently, thermodynamically controlled segregation of a smooth layer of polymer ligands into pinned micelles (patches) offered an approach to nanopatterning of polymer-functionalized NPs. Control of the patch number, size, and spatial distribution on the surface of spherical NPs has been achieved, however, the role of NP shape remained elusive. In the present work, we report the role of NP shape, namely, the effect of the local surface curvature, on polymer segregation into surface patches. For polymer-functionalized metal nanocubes, we show experimentally and theoretically that the patches form preferentially on the high-curvature regions such as vertices and edges. An in situ transformation of the nanocubes into nanospheres leads to the change in the number and distribution of patches; a process that is dominated by the balance between the surface energy and the stretching energy of the polymer ligands. The experimental and theoretical results presented in this work are applicable to surface patterning of polymer-capped NPs with different shapes, thus enabling the exploration of patch-directed self-assembly, as colloidal surfactants, and as templates for the synthesis of hybrid nanomaterials.

Strong Magneto-Optical Response of Nonmagnetic Organic Materials Coupled to Plasmonic Nanostructures

Plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) can significantly modify the optical properties of nearby organic molecules and thus present an attractive opportunity for sensing applications. However, the utilization of PNPs in conventional absorption, fluorescence, or Raman spectroscopy techniques is often ineffective due to strong absorption background and light scattering, particularly in the case of turbid solutions, cell suspensions, and biological tissues. Here we show that nonmagnetic organic molecules may exhibit magneto-optical response due to binding to a PNP. Specifically, we detect strong magnetic circular dichroism signal from supramolecular J-aggregates, a representative organic dye, upon binding to silver-coated gold nanorods. We explain this effect by strong coupling between the J-aggregate exciton and the nanoparticle plasmon, leading to the formation of a hybrid state in which the exciton effectively acquires magnetic properties from the plasmon. Our findings are fully corroborated by theoretical modeling and constitute a novel magnetic method for chemo- and biosensing, which (upon adequate PNP functionalization) is intrinsically insensitive to the organic background and thus offers a significant advantage over conventional spectroscopy techniques.

Anisotropic metal nanoparticles for surface enhanced Raman scattering

Anisotropy in plasmonic metal nanoparticles plays a major role in the enhancement of the Raman scattering of adsorbed molecules.

Aspect-ratio driven evolution of high-order resonant modes and near-field distributions in localized surface phonon polariton nanostructures

Polar dielectrics have garnered much attention as an alternative to plasmonic metals in the mid- to long-wave infrared spectral regime due to their low optical losses. As such, nanoscale resonators composed of these materials demonstrate figures of merit beyond those achievable in plasmonic equivalents. However, until now, only low-order, phonon-mediated, localized polariton resonances, known as surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs), have been observed in polar dielectric optical resonators. In the present work, we investigate the excitation of 16 distinct high-order, multipolar, localized surface phonon polariton resonances that are optically excited in rectangular pillars etched into a semi-insulating silicon carbide substrate. By elongating a single pillar axis we are able to significantly modify the far- and near-field properties of localized SPhP resonances, opening the door to realizing narrow-band infrared sources with tailored radiation patterns. Such control of the near-field behavior of resonances can also impact surface enhanced infrared optical sensing, which is mediated by polarization selection rules, as well as the morphology and strength of resonator hot spots. Furthermore, through the careful choice of polar dielectric material, these results can also serve as the guiding principles for the generalized design of optical devices that operate from the mid- to far-infrared.

Plasmon Mapping in Au@Ag Nanocube Assemblies

Surface plasmon modes in metallic nanostructures largely determine their optoelectronic properties. Such plasmon modes can be manipulated by changing the morphology of the nanoparticles or by bringing plasmonic nanoparticle building blocks close to each other within organized assemblies. We report the EELS mapping of such plasmon modes in pure Ag nanocubes, Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes, and arrays of Au@Ag nanocubes. We show that these arrays enable the creation of interesting plasmonic structures starting from elementary building blocks. Special attention will be dedicated to the plasmon modes in a triangular array formed by three nanocubes. Because of hybridization, a combination of such nanotriangles is shown to provide an antenna effect, resulting in strong electrical field enhancement at the narrow gap between the nanotriangles.

Local plasmon resonances of metal-in-metal core-shells

We investigate the tunability and strength of the localized surface plasmons of binary metal-in-metal core-shells. Ellipsoids are used as an analytical model to show how the fill factor continuously tunes a hybridized mode between those of the constituents, suggesting the use of metal combinations with widely differing plasma frequencies for broad tunability. A quasistatic eigenmode method is used separate geometric and material parameters to facilitate prediction of hybridized dipole modes in arbitrary shapes. A modified ellipsoid model is found to adequately describe the symmetric dipole-dipole resonance of well-rounded cuboids.

Polarisation charges and scattering behaviour of realistically rounded plasmonic nanostructures

We study the effect of realistically rounding nanorod antennae and gap antennae on their far field and near field properties. The simulations show that both scattering behaviour and polarisation charge distribution depend significantly on rounding. Rounding is also seen to have a major effect on coupling between nanostructures. The results suggest that it is important to incorporate the effect of rounding to be able to design plasmonic nanostructures with desired properties.
