Magneto-optical properties of core-shell magneto-plasmonic Au-Co(x)Fe(3 - x)O4 nanowires

Au-Loaded Superparamagnetic Mesoporous Bimetallic CoFeB Nanovehicles for Sensitive Autoantibody Detection

Construction of a well-defined mesoporous nanostructure is crucial for applying nonnoble metals in catalysis and biomedicine owing to their highly exposed active sites and accessible surfaces. However, it remains a great challenge to controllably synthesize superparamagnetic CoFe-based mesoporous nanospheres with tunable compositions and exposed large pores, which are sought for immobilization or adsorption of guest molecules for magnetic capture, isolation, preconcentration, and purification. Herein, a facile assembly strategy of a block copolymer was developed to fabricate a mesoporous CoFeB amorphous alloy with abundant metallic Co/Fe atoms, which served as an ideal scaffold for well-dispersed loading of Au nanoparticles (∼3.1 nm) via the galvanic replacement reaction. The prepared Au-CoFeB possessed high saturation magnetization as well as uniform and large open mesopores (∼12.5 nm), which provided ample accessibility to biomolecules, such as nucleic acids, enzymes, proteins, and antibodies. Through this distinctive combination of superparamagnetism (CoFeB) and biofavorability (Au), the resulting Au-CoFeB was employed as a dispersible nanovehicle for the direct capture and isolation of p53 autoantibody from serum samples. Highly sensitive detection of the autoantibody was achieved with a limit of detection of 0.006 U/mL, which was 50 times lower than that of the conventional p53-ELISA kit-based detection system. Our assay is capable of quantifying differential expression patterns for detecting p53 autoantibodies in ovarian cancer patients. This assay provides a rapid, inexpensive, and portable platform with the potential to detect a wide range of clinically relevant protein biomarkers.

From multi-segmented to core/shell nanorods: morphology evolution in Fe-Au nanorods by tuning fabrication conditions

Aiming to obtain hybrid magneto-plasmonic nanostructures, we have developed multisegmented and core/shell structured Fe-Au nanorods using template assisted electrochemical deposition. A facile method of tuning the growth pattern of multisegmented nanorods into core/shell structured is demonstrated. With a precise control of current density and deposition time, a brick-stacked wire like growth led to the formation of hollow nanotubes that could be further tuned to multilayered hollow nanotubes and core/shell structured nanorods. TEM imaging and STEM-EELS technique were used to explore the morphology, microstructure and the distribution of Au and Fe in the nanorods. The easy magnetization direction was found to be perpendicular to the nanorods' growth direction in the segmented nanorods. On the other hand, core/shell nanorods exhibited isotropic behavior. Our findings provide deeper insights into the fabrication of hybrid nanorods and the opportunity to tune the fabrication method to vary their morphology accordingly. Such studies will benefit design of hybrid nanorods with specific morphologies and physical properties and hence their integration into sensing, spintronics and other potential biomedical and technological applications.

Electrochemical Investigation of Porosity in Core-Shell Magnetoplasmonic Nanoparticles

Porous core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a promising material for broad ranges of applications in catalysts, material chemistry, biology, and optical sensors. Using a typical Ag core-Fe₃O₄ shell NP, a.k.a., magnetoplasmonic (MagPlas) NP, two porous shell models were prepared: i.e., Ag@Fe₃O₄ NPs and its SiO₂-covered NPs (Ag@Fe₃O₄@SiO₂). We suggested using cyclic voltammetry (CV) to provide unprecedented insight into the porosity of the core-shell NPs caused by the applied potential, resulting in the selective redox activities of the core and porous shell components of Ag@Fe₃O₄ NPs and Ag@Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ NPs at different cycles of CV. The porous and nonporous core-shell nanostructures were qualitatively and quantitatively determined by the electrochemical method. The ratio of the oxidation current peak (μA) of Ag to Ag⁺ in the porous shell to that in the SiO₂ coated (nonporous) shell was 400:3.2. The suggested approach and theoretical background could be extended to other types of multicomponent NP complexes.

One-Pot Synthesis of Magnetoplasmonic Au@FexOy Nanowires: Bioinspired Bouligand Chiral Stack

One-dimensional hybrid nanostructures composed of a plasmonic gold nanowire core covered by a shell of magnetic oxide nanoparticles (Au@Fe_xO_y NWs) were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal synthesis process. The effects of reaction temperature, time, reducing agent, and precursor as well as postsynthesis treatment were optimized to produce highly uniform NWs with a diameter of 226 ± 25 nm and a plasmonic core aspect ratio of 25 to 82. By exploiting the interaction of NWs with an external magnetic field, precise arrangements into highly periodic photonic structures were achieved, which can generate distinctive structural colors that are vividly iridescent and polarization-sensitive. Furthermore, a Bouligand-type chiral nematic film consisting of multistacked unidirectional layers of achiral NWs was fabricated using a modified layer-by-layer deposition method, which displays circular dichroism (CD) and chiral sensing capability. The addition of bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein analyte induced a concentration-dependent wavelength shift of CD peaks. These intriguing properties of magnetoplasmonic anisotropic NWs and their self-assemblies could be consequently valuable for developing nature-inspired structural color imprints as well as solid-state chiral sensing devices.

Enhanced Faraday rotation by dielectric metasurfaces with Bayesian shape-optimized scatterers

In this Letter, we demonstrate how to optimize the magneto-optic response of a Huygens metasurface composed of square arrays of all-dielectric nano-disk scatterers. We compare cylindrical and shape-modified disks. Both provide a strongly enhanced Faraday rotation that is accompanied by almost 100% transmittance. The shape modification obtained via a Bayesian optimization algorithm results in a 50% increase in the magneto-optic response compared to the best cylindrical disk, providing 15° of polarization rotation for a 260 nm thick metasurface.

The influence of the synthesis conditions on the magnetic behaviour of the densely packed arrays of Ni nanowires in porous anodic alumina membranes

The densely packed arrays of Ni nanowires of 70 nm diameter and 6–12 μm length were obtained via electrodeposition into porous alumina membranes (PAAMs) of 55–75 μm thickness.

Bottom-Up Masking of Si/Ge Surfaces and Nanowire Heterostructures via Surface-Initiated Polymerization and Selective Etching

The fully bottom-up and scalable synthesis of complex micro/nanoscale materials and functional devices requires masking methods to define key features and direct the deposition of various coatings and films. Here, we demonstrate selective coaxial lithography via etching of surfaces (SCALES), an enabling bottom-up process to add polymer masks to micro/nanoscale objects. SCALES is a three-step process, including (1) bottom-up synthesis of compositionally modulated structures, (2) surface-initiated polymerization of a conformal mask, and (3) selective removal of the mask only from regions whose underlying surface is susceptible to an etchant. We demonstrate the key features of and characterize the SCALES process with a series of model Si/Ge systems: Si and Ge wafers, Si and Ge nanowires, and Si/Ge heterostructure nanowires.

Magneto-plasmonic properties of Ag-Co composite nano-triangle arrays

The magneto-plasmonic properties of Ag-Co composite nano-triangle arrays are investigated. Both plasmonic and magnetic properties of the samples are found to strongly depend on the composition ratio of Ag and Co. Composite nano-triangle arrays exhibit strong plasmonic properties and low magneto-optics (MO) effect with high composition of Ag, and vice versa. The enhanced magneto-optic effect is also observed to be coincident with the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, i.e. the maximum Faraday effect occurs at the LSPR wavelength, which is due to locally high E-field. The composite triangle arrays with the 60% Co content show high plasmonic-MO performances characterized by magneto-optics-plasmonic correlation factor. All experimental results are confirmed by finite-difference time domain calculations.

Morphological and crystallographic orientation of hematite spindles in an applied magnetic field

The magnetic response of spindle-shaped hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles was investigated by simultaneous small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) experiments. The field-dependent magnetic and nematic order parameters of the magnetic single-domain nanospindles in a static magnetic field are fully described by SAXS simulations of an oriented ellipsoid with the implemented Langevin function. The experimental scattering intensities of the spindle-like particles can be modeled simply by using the geometrical (length, radius, size distribution) and magnetic parameters (strength of magnetic field, magnetic moment) obtained from isotropic SAXS and macroscopic magnetization measurements, respectively. Whereas SAXS gives information on the morphological particle orientation in the applied field, WAXS texture analysis elucidates the atomic scale orientation of the magnetic easy direction in the hematite crystal structure. Our results strongly suggest the tendency for uniaxial anisotropy but indicate significant thermal fluctuations of the particle moments within the hematite basal plane.

Magnetoplasmonic nanograting geometry enables optical nonreciprocity sign control

We experimentally demonstrate a disruptive approach to control magnetooptical nonreciprocal effects. It has been known that the combination of a magneto-optically (MO) active substrate and extraordinary transmission (EOT) effects through deep-subwavelength nanoslits of a noble metal grating, leads to giant enhancements of the magnitude of the MO effects that would normally be obtained on just the bar substrate. This was demonstrated both in the transmission configuration, where the OET is directly observed, as well as in reflection configuration, where an increase of a transmitted power results in a decrease in reflected power. We show here that even more than just an enhancement, the MO effects can also undergo a sign reversal by achieving a hybridization of the different types of resonances at play in these EOT nanogratings. By tuning the geometrical profile of the grating's slits, one can engineer - for a fixed wavelength and fixed magnetization - the transverse MO Kerr effect (TMOKE) reflectivity of such a magnetoplasmonic system to be enhanced, extinguished or inversely enhanced. We have fabricated gold gratings with varying nanoslit widths on a Bi-substituted gadolinium iron garnet and experimentally confirmed such a behavior using a customized magneto-optic Mueller matrix ellipsometer. This demonstration allows new design paradigms for integrated nonreciprocal circuits and biochemical sensors with increased sensitivity and reduced footprint.

Co/Au multisegmented nanowires: a 3D array of magnetostatically coupled nanopillars

Arrays of multisegmented Co/Au nanowires with designed segment lengths and diameters have been prepared by electrodeposition into aluminum oxide templates. The high quality of the Co/Au interface and the crystallographic structure of Co segments have determined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Magnetic hysteresis loop measurements show larger coercivity and squareness of multisegmented nanowires as compared to single segment Co nanowires. The complementary micromagnetic simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results, confirming that the magnetic behavior is defined mainly by magnetostatic coupling between different segments. The proposed structure constitutes an innovative route towards a 3D array of synchronized magnetic nano-oscillators with large potential in nanoelectronics.

Plasmon Modes Induced by Anisotropic Gap Opening in Au@Cu2 O Nanorods

Integration of semiconductors with noble metals to form heteronanostructures can give rise to many interesting plasmonic and electronic properties. A number of such heteronanostructures have been demonstrated comprising noble metals and n-type semiconductors, such as TiO2 , ZnO, SnO2 , Fe3 O4 , and CuO. In contrast, reports on heteronanostructures made of noble metals and p-type semiconductors are scarce. Cu2 O is an unintentional p-type semiconductor with unique properties. Here, the uniform coating of Cu2 O on two types of Au nanorods and systematic studies of the plasmonic properties of the resultant core-shell heteronanostructures are reported. One type of Au nanorods is prepared by seed-mediated growth, and the other is obtained by oxidation of the as-prepared Au nanorods. The (Au nanorod)@Cu2 O nanostructures produced from the as-prepared nanorods exhibit two transverse plasmon peaks, whereas those derived from the oxidized nanorods display only one transverse plasmon peak. Through electrodynamic simulations the additional transverse plasmon peak is found to originate from a discontinuous gap formed at the side of the as-prepared nanorods. The existence of the gap is verified and its formation mechanism is unraveled with additional experiments. The results will be useful for designing metal-semiconductor heteronanostructures with desired plasmonic properties and therefore also for exploring plasmon-enhanced applications in photocatalysis, solar-energy harvesting, and biotechnologies.

Enhanced magneto-optical effects in composite coaxial nanowires embedded with Ag nanoparticles

Nanostructures decorated with noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit potential for use in highly sensitive optoelectronic devices through the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. In this study, Faraday rotation was significantly enhanced through the structural optimization of ferromagnetic (FM)/semiconductor composite nanostructures. Experimental and theoretical results revealed that the position of noble metal NPs significantly influenced the coupling of the LSPR-enhanced electromagnetic field with FM materials. Furthermore, nanostructures embedded with noble metals demonstrated an improved capability to efficiently use the electromagnetic field compared to other structures. The Faraday rotation of ZnO/Ag(NPs)/Fe was enhanced 58 fold compared to that of the ZnO(film)/Fe. This work provides a basis for the design of nanoarchitectures for miniaturized high-performance magneto-optical devices.

Enhancement of magneto-optical Kerr effect by surface plasmons in trilayer structure consisting of double-layer dielectrics and ferromagnetic metal

Giant enhancement of the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is theoretically shown in a trilayer structure consisting of double-layer dielectrics and a ferromagnetic metal (Al2O3/SiO2/Fe). We calculated the resonant enhancement of the transverse MOKE (TMOKE) and polar MOKE (PMOKE) using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) configuration with the transfer matrix method using a 4 × 4 scattering matrix. At a specific film thickness of the low-index SiO2 layer, where confinement of the SPPs on the Fe surface becomes close to the cutoff condition, the incident light from the Al2O3 couples with the SPPs at the SiO2/Fe boundary most efficiently, resulting in resonant enhancement of the MOKE at an incident angle corresponding to the wave vector of the SPPs. The calculated PMOKE showed orthogonal transformation (90°-rotation) and almost full-orbed deformation (44°-ellipticity) of the polarization, and the TMOKE showed a change in reflectance of about 34 dB upon magnetization reversal.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of gold core cobalt shell magnetoplasmonic nanowire arrays

In this work we present core-shell nanowire arrays of gold coated with a nanometric layer of cobalt. Despite the extremely small Co volume, these core-shell nanowires display large magneto-optical activity and plasmonic resonance determined by the geometry of the structure. Therefore, we are able to tune both the plasmonic and magneto-optical response in the visible range. Through optical and ellipsometric measurements in transmission, and applying a magnetic field to the sample, it is possible to modulate the value of the phase angle (Del {Δ}) between the S and P polarised components. It was found that the core-shell sample produced an order of magnitude larger variation in Del with changing magnetic field direction, compared with hollow cobalt tubes. The enhancement of magneto optical properties through the plasmonic nature of the gold core is complemented with the ability to induce magnetic influence over optical properties via an externally applied field. Moreover, we demonstrate for the first time the ability to use the remanent magnetisation of the Co, in conjunction with the optical properties defined by the Au, to observe remanent optical states in this uniquely designed structure. This new class of magnetoplasmonic metamaterial has great potential in a wide range of applications, from bio-sensing to data storage due to the tuneable nature of multiple resonance modes and dual functionality.

Directed liquid phase assembly of highly ordered metallic nanoparticle arrays

Directed assembly of nanomaterials is a promising route for the synthesis of nanoscale materials. In this paper, we demonstrate the directed-assembly of highly ordered two-dimensional arrays of hierarchical nanostructures with tunable size, spacing and composition. The directed assembly is achieved on lithographically patterned metal films that are subsequently pulse-laser melted; during the brief liquid lifetime, the pattened nanostructures assemble into highly ordered primary and secondary nanoparticles, with sizes below that which was originally patterned. Complementary fluid-dynamics simulations emulate the resultant patterns and show how the competition of capillary forces and liquid metal-solid substrate interaction potential drives the directed assembly. As an example of the enhanced functionality, a full-wave electromagnetic analysis has been performed to identify the nature of the supported plasmonic resonances.
