Studying light propagation in self-assembled hybrid photonic-plasmonic crystals by fourier microscopy

High-speed infrared photonic band microscope using hyperspectral Fourier image spectroscopy

In this study, we developed a photonic band microscope based on hyperspectral Fourier image spectroscopy. The developed device constructs an infrared photonic band structure from Fourier images for various wavelength obtained by hyperspectral imaging, which make it possible to speedily measure the dispersion characteristics of photonic nanostructures. By applying the developed device to typical photonic crystals and topological photonic crystals, we succeeded in obtaining band structures in good agreement with the theoretical prediction calculated by the finite element method. This device facilitates the evaluation of physical properties in various photonic nanostructures, and is expected to further promote related fields.

Biosilica slab photonic crystals as an alternative to cleanroom nanofabrication?

Photonics, the manipulation of light at nanoscale, is a key enabling technology with impact in health and energy applications, among others. In most cases photonics still relies on materials and fabrication methods inherited from other disciplines, usually requiring expensive, time-consuming and environmentally-unfriendly processes. Recent experiments demonstrated that advanced photonic materials, as complex as those known as 2.5 dimensional slab photonic crystals, also occur naturally in diatoms. These microscopic algae precipitate silicic acid from water to produce silicon dioxide membranes, relying on intracellular biomineralization mechanisms. Addressing some important aspects for the potential industrial utilization of these structures, we here propose that optical materials produced by the diatoms could serve as cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to cleanroom nanofabrication. We demonstrate that photonic materials grown by the diatom species Coscinodiscus granii can be separated based on its hydrokinetic characteristics. We further show that the photonic membranes present low defect rates of ca. 1/100 unit cells and that variation in pore diameter, as observed between individual membranes, can affect the photonic properties at large, but only marginally at low refractive index contrast. Finally, we list algal culture collections operating worldwide, thus providing a global network for live diatoms and diatom materials. We discuss the feasibility and bottlenecks related to scaled-up growth for direct utilization of photonic materials from diatoms.

Light-induced dynamic structural color by intracellular 3D photonic crystals in brown algae

Natural photonic crystals are responsible for strong reflectance at selective wavelengths in different natural systems. We demonstrate that intracellular opal-like photonic crystals formed from lipids within photosynthetic cells produce vivid structural color in the alga Cystoseira tamariscifolia. The reflectance of the opaline vesicles is dynamically responsive to environmental illumination. The structural color is present in low light-adapted samples, whereas higher light levels produce a slow disappearance of the structural color such that it eventually vanishes completely. Once returned to low-light conditions, the color re-emerges. Our results suggest that these complex intracellular natural photonic crystals are responsive to environmental conditions, changing their packing structure reversibly, and have the potential to manipulate light for roles beyond visual signaling.

Direct wide-angle measurement of a photonic band structure in a three-dimensional photonic crystal using infrared Fourier imaging spectroscopy

We propose a method to directly visualize the photonic band-structure of micrometer-sized photonic crystals using wide-angle spectroscopy. By extending Fourier imaging spectroscopy sensitivity into the infrared range, we have obtained accurate measurements of the band structures along the high-symmetry directions (X-W-K-L-U) of polymeric three-dimensional, rod-connected diamond photonic crystals. Our implementation also allows us to record single-wavelength reflectance far-field patterns showing very good agreement with simulations of the same designs. This technique is suitable for the characterization of photonic structures working in the infrared and, in particular, to obtain band-structure information of complete photonic band gap materials.

Rational Assembly of Optoplasmonic Hetero-nanoparticle Arrays with Tunable Photonic-Plasmonic Resonances

Metallic and dielectric nanoparticles (NPs) have synergistic electromagnetic properties but their positioning into morphologically defined hybrid arrays with novel optical properties still poses significant challenges. A template-guided self-assembly strategy is introduced for the positioning of metallic and dielectric NPs at pre-defined lattice sites. The chemical assembly approach facilitates the fabrication of clusters of metallic NPs with interparticle separations of only a few nanometers in a landscape of dielectric NPs positioned hundreds of nanometers apart. This approach is used to generate two-dimensional interdigitated arrays of 250 nm diameter TiO2 NPs and clusters of electromagnetically strongly coupled 60 nm Au NPs. The morphologydependent near- and far-field responses of the resulting multiscale optoplasmonic arrays are analyzed in detail. Elastic and inelastic scattering spectroscopy in combination with electromagnetic simulations reveal that optoplasmonic arrays sustain delocalized photonic-plasmonic modes that achieve a cascaded E-field enhancement in the gap junctions of the Au NP clusters and simultaneously increase the E-field intensity throughout the entire array.
