Emergence of large chiroptical responses by ligand exchange cross-linking of monolayer-protected gold clusters with chiral dithiol

An ultrastable thiolate/diglyme ligated cluster: Au20(PET)15(DG)2

The synthesis and characterization of an Au₂₀(PET)₁₅(DG)₂ (PET = phenylethane thiol; DG = diglyme) cluster is reported. Mass spectrometry reveals this as the first diglyme ligated cluster where diglyme ligands survive ionization into the gas phase. Thermal analysis shows the cluster degrades at 156 °C, whereas the similar Au₂₀(PET)₁₆ cluster degrades at 125 °C, representing markedly increased thermal stability. A combination of NMR spectroscopy and computational modeling suggests that the diglyme molecules bind in a tridentate manner for this cluster, resulting in a binding energy of 35.2 kcal mol^-1 for diglyme, which is comparable to the value of ∼40 kcal mol^-1 for thiolates. IR and optical spectroscopies show no evidence of assembly of this cluster, in contrast to Au₂₀(PET)₁₅(DG), which readily assembles into dimeric species, which is consistent with a tridentate binding motif. Evidence for stacking among Au-bound and non-bound diglyme molecules is inferred from thermal and mass analysis.

Self-promoted solid-state covalent networking of Au25(SR)18 through reversible disulfide bonds. A critical effect of the nanocluster in oxidation processes

Covalent crosslinking of ligand-protected gold nanoclusters offers interesting platforms to investigate the properties associated with the synergetic effects of multiple nanoclusters. In this paper, we report the synthesis of covalent networks of [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]^- nanoclusters using reversible disulfide linkages, which was facilitated by the unique capabilities of the nanocluster to mediate oxidation processes. The conventional Au₂₅ synthesis using 1,6-hexanedithiol afforded a soluble oligodisulfide-appended [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]^- monomer possessing uncoordinated anionic thiolate sites at the terminal ends. Upon exposure to O₂, the monomer spontaneously underwent intercluster crosslinking in the solid state to give free-standing transparent films, in which the nanoclusters were condensed with the retention of the original Au₂₅ framework. Through studies combined with model experiments, the Au₂₅ cluster was found to be involved in the O₂-mediated radical reactions, promoting the formation of intercluster disulfide linkages. The composition of the films implied the involvement of reversible exchange reactions between disulfide and thiyl radicals, from which it was suggested that solid-state crosslinking occurred in adaptive manners under the control of dynamic covalent chemistry. We also demonstrate that the nanocluster film can serve as a robust and efficient heterogeneous photosensitizer to mediate the generation of singlet oxygen. This work demonstrates a unique aspect of the Au₂₅(SR)₁₈-type nanocluster to mediate oxidation processes as well as the utility of the concept of dynamic covalent chemistry in the bottom-up construction of nanomaterials, which would widen the potential of ligand-protected nanoclusters.

Atomic-level separation of thiolate-protected metal clusters

Fine metal clusters have attracted much attention from the viewpoints of both basic and applied science for many years because of their unique physical/chemical properties and functions, which differ from those of bulk metals. Among these materials, thiolate (SR)-protected gold clusters (Au_n(SR)_m clusters) have been the most studied metal clusters since 2000 because of their ease of synthesis and handling. However, in the early 2000s, it was not easy to isolate these metal clusters. Therefore, high-resolution separation methods were explored, and several atomic-level separation methods, including polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and thin-layer chromatography (TLC), were successively established. These techniques have made it possible to isolate a series of Au_n(SR)_m clusters, and much knowledge has been obtained on the correlation between the chemical composition and fundamental properties such as the stability, electronic structure, and physical properties of Au_n(SR)_m clusters. In addition, these high-resolution separation techniques are now also frequently used to evaluate the distribution of the product and to track the reaction process. In this way, high-resolution separation techniques have played an essential role in the study of Au_n(SR)_m clusters. However, only a few reviews have focused on this work. This review focuses on PAGE, HPLC, and TLC separation techniques, which offer high resolution and repeatability, and summarizes previous studies on the high-resolution separation of Au_n(SR)_m and related clusters with the purpose of promoting a better understanding of the features and the utility of these techniques.

[Au7Ag9(dppf)3(CF3CO2)7BF4]n: a linear nanocluster polymer from molecular Au7Ag8 clusters covalently linked by silver atoms

We report the total structure determination of a covalently bonded nanocluster polymer [Au7Ag9(dppf)3(CF3CO2)7BF4]n (1). This features a one-dimensional linear chain, consisting of unique molecular building blocks, Au7Ag8(dppf)3(CF3CO2)7 clusters, which are linked together by Ag-O bonds rather than Au-Au interactions or bidentate organic bridges as previously reported.

Au25(SR)18: the captain of the great nanocluster ship

Noble metal nanoclusters are in the intermediate state between discrete atoms and plasmonic nanoparticles and are of significance due to their atomically accurate structures, intriguing properties, and great potential for applications in various fields. In addition, the size-dependent properties of nanoclusters construct a platform for thoroughly researching the structure (composition)-property correlations, which is favorable for obtaining novel nanomaterials with enhanced physicochemical properties. Thus far, more than 100 species of nanoclusters (mono-metallic Au or Ag nanoclusters, and bi- or tri-metallic alloy nanoclusters) with crystal structures have been reported. Among these nanoclusters, Au25(SR)18-the brightest molecular star in the nanocluster field-is capable of revealing the past developments and prospecting the future of the nanoclusters. Since being successfully synthesized (in 1998, with a 20-year history) and structurally determined (in 2008, with a 10-year history), Au25(SR)18 has stimulated the interest of chemists as well as material scientists, due to the early discovery, easy preparation, high stability, and easy functionalization and application of this molecular star. In this review, the preparation methods, crystal structures, physicochemical properties, and practical applications of Au25(SR)18 are summarized. The properties of Au25(SR)18 range from optics and chirality to magnetism and electrochemistry, and the property-oriented applications include catalysis, chemical imaging, sensing, biological labeling, biomedicine and beyond. Furthermore, the research progress on the Ag-based M25(SR)18 counterpart (i.e., Ag25(SR)18) is included in this review due to its homologous composition, construction and optical absorption to its gold-counterpart Au25(SR)18. Moreover, the alloying methods, metal-exchange sites and property alternations based on the templated Au25(SR)18 are highlighted. Finally, some perspectives and challenges for the future research of the Au25(SR)18 nanocluster are proposed (also holding true for all members in the nanocluster field). This review is directed toward the broader scientific community interested in the metal nanocluster field, and hopefully opens up new horizons for scientists studying nanomaterials. This review is based on the publications available up to March 2018.

Dithiol-Induced Oligomerization of Thiol-Protected Gold Nanoclusters

Controlled synthesis of nanostructure oligomers requires detailed understanding of their wet chemistry and the forces driving the polymerization process. In this paper, we report the main factors affecting the reaction yields of a dithiol-induced synthesis of covalently bound nanocluster dimers and oligomers and present a detailed analysis of possible reaction mechanisms. We synthesize the nanocluster oligomers using monodisperse para-mercaptobenzoic acid (p-MBA)-protected gold nanoclusters with a nominal composition of Au_∼250(p-MBA) _n to minimize ensemble effects on size, shape, and surface structure. Ligand exchange was performed on the nanoclusters with five different dithiol linkers: 5,5'-bis(mercaptomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4″-thiobisbenzenethiol, benzene-1,4-dithiol, 1,4-benzenedimethanethiol, and dimercaptostilbene. Oligomer yields depend strongly on the used dithiol and on the dithiol-to-nanocluster ratio. Detailed analysis of the reaction yields in combination with simulations suggests that the system reaches a dynamic equilibrium, where ligand exchange happens continuously forming and breaking nanocluster oligomers that are bound together by short chains of disulfide-bridged dithiols. Despite the dynamic nature of the system, dithiol-induced polymerization of nanoclusters is a general and straightforward approach to produce dimers and larger oligomers of thiol-protected nanoclusters. Our work provides physical insight into, offers tools for, and reveals challenges in the controlled synthesis of covalently bound nanoparticle assemblies.
