Flexible free-standing luminescent two-component fiber films with tunable hierarchical structures based on hydrogen-bonding architecture

Construction of Artificial Light-Harvesting Systems Based on Aggregation-Induced Emission Type Supramolecular Self-Assembly Metallogels

A method for preparing new artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) based on supramolecular metallogels was proposed. Various metal ions were introduced into a solution of a bi-benzimidazole compound (P) in ethylene glycol, and P exhibited high selectivity toward Al3+, as indicated by the noticeable red shift (49 nm) observed in the fluorescence spectra of P after the addition of Al3+. Interestingly, the gelator, P, could self-assemble into a stable supramolecular gel (P-gel) that exhibits strong aggregation-induced emission in ethylene glycol. Thus, two ALHSs were successfully prepared in a gel environment. The P-Al3+ assembly acts as the donor in the ALHSs, while BODIPY 505/515 (BDP) and rhodamine 6G (Rh6G), which are loaded onto the P-Al3+ assembly, act as acceptors. In these two diverse systems, the occurrence of an energy transfer process is confirmed from the P-Al3+ assembly to BDP and Rh6G. The findings of this study will enable the design and fabrication of ALHSs.

Driving force balance-the "identity card" of supramolecules in a self-sorting multicomponent assembly system

Contrary to the popular belief that multicomponent assembly systems will theoretically co-assemble under the same type of driving forces, two distinct assembly modes from a system composed of two chemically similar supramolecules were demonstrated in this work. Although with exactly the same driving forces, molecule-level self-sorting unexpectedly occurred in this two-component system made of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) core-based supramolecules with one and eight lysine derivative arms. From the experiments, it was concluded that instead of driving force types, driving force counterpoise plays a vital role here, which we called "identity card hypothesis". The hypothesis suggests that two highly similar components show high affinity for the same molecules through the differentiated "identity card"-like balance of driving forces induced by the difference in the molecular spatial shape, which has never been reported before.

Towards the Prediction of Global Solution State Properties for Hydrogen Bonded, Self-Associating Amphiphiles

Through this extensive structure-property study we show that critical micelle concentration correlates with self-associative hydrogen bond complex formation constant, when combined with outputs from low level, widely accessible, computational models. Herein, we bring together a series of 39 structurally related molecules related by stepwise variation of a hydrogen bond donor-acceptor amphiphilic salt. The self-associative and corresponding global properties for this family of compounds have been studied in the gas, solid and solution states. Within the solution state, we have shown the type of self-associated structure present to be solvent dependent. In DMSO, this class of compound show a preference for hydrogen bonded dimer formation, however moving into aqueous solutions the same compounds are found to form larger self-associated aggregates. This observation has allowed us the unique opportunity to investigate and begin to predict self-association events at both the molecular and extended aggregate level.

Morphologies and Properties of PET Nano Porous Luminescence Fiber: Oil Absorption and Fluorescence-Indicating Functions

A polyethylene terephthalate nano porous luminescence fiber (PNPLF) was prepared through electrospun technology. The SEM and TEM images show that the surfaces of the fibers are covered with pores. The diameter of the fiber is 250-500 nm, and the diameter of the pores is 20-180 nm. The water and oil contact angles of PNPLF are 135° and 27°, respectively. The oil absorption value of the as-prepared PNPLF achieves 135 g/g and has a good oil absorption function. The as-prepared PNPLF has good luminescence properties and fluorescent-indicating function. Even trace amounts of oil can also cause obvious change of fluorescence intensity of PNPLF which has a good stability from 20 °C to 70 °C. The breaking stress of yarn of PNPLF reaches 117cN. Furthermore, the good mechanical properties and thermal properties of PNPLF provide important basic conditions for their wide applications.

Direct physical vapor deposition and flexible photoelectrical properties of large-area free-standing films of metal octaethylporphyrin on ionic liquid surface

Free-standing films of metal octaethylporphyrins (MOEPs) were prepared for the first time by a physical vapor deposition on surface of an ionic liquid (IL). Different from those on solid surfaces, the as-obtained films were very compact and with plannar structure. The monitoring of time-dependent process indicated that the high surface energy of IL and the strong π…π interaction between MOEP molecules played key roles in forming such films. Furthermore, the as-obtained film showed good transferability, which made it possible to be easily transferred to any substrates for further device application. More importantly, the prototype photodetectors based on free-standing films of MOEP showed ultra flexibility, mechanical stability, and durability.

Effect of Amide Hydrogen Bonding Interaction on Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Naphthalene Diimide Amphiphiles with Aggregation Induced Emission

In the present work, two new naphthalene diimide (NDI) amphiphiles, NDI-N and NDI-NA, were successfully synthesized and employed to investigate their self-assembly and optical properties. For NDI-NA, which contains an amide group, aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) was demonstrated in the presence of various ratios of methylcyclohexane (MCH) in chloroform, which led to the visual color changes. This new amide-containing NDI-NA amphiphile formed nanobelt structures in chloroform/MCH (10:90, v/v) and microcup-like morphologies in chloroform/MCH (5:95, v/v). The closure of these microcups led to the formation of vesicles and microcapsules. The structural morphologies gained from the solvophobic control of NDI-NA were confirmed by various complementary techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In the absence of the amide moiety in NDI-N, no self-assembly was observed, indicating the fundamental role of H-bonding in the self-association process.

Luminescent and transparent nanopaper based on rare-earth up-converting nanoparticle grafted nanofibrillated cellulose derived from garlic skin

Highly flexible, transparent, and luminescent nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) nanopaper with heterogeneous network, functionalized by rare-earth up-converting luminescent nanoparticles (UCNPs), was rapidly synthesized by using a moderate pressure extrusion paper-making process. NFC was successfully prepared from garlic skin using an efficient extraction approach combined with high frequency ultrasonication and high pressure homogenization after removing the noncellulosic components. An efficient epoxidation treatment was carried out to enhance the activity of the UCNPs (NaYF4:Yb,Er) with oleic acid ligand capped on the surface. The UCNPs after epoxidation then reacted with NFC in aqueous medium to form UCNP-grafted NFC nanocomposite (NFC-UCNP) suspensions at ambient temperature. Through the paper-making process, the assembled fluorescent NFC-UCNP hybrid nanopaper exhibits excellent properties, including high transparency, strong up-conversion luminescence, and good flexibility. The obtained hybrid nanopaper was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), up-conversion luminescence (UCL) spectrum, and ultraviolet and visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometer. The experimental results demonstrate that the UCNPs have been successfully grafted to the NFC matrix with heterogeneous network. And the superiorly optical transparent and luminescent properties of the nanopaper mainly depend on the ratio of UCNPs to NFC. Of importance here is that, NFC and UCNPs afford the nanopaper a prospective candidate for multimodal anti-counterfeiting, sensors, and ion probes applications.
