Aggregation behavior of the template-removed 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin chiral array directed by poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(L-lysine)

Supramolecular Chiral Aggregation of Porphyrin Induced by Photo-Generated Triphenylamines Radical Cations

Here, it is shown that photoirradiation triggered chiral J-aggregates formation of an achiral anionic porphyrin, TPPS (tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin), in the presence of chiral triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives. A series of chiral triarylamines linked with aromatic rings is designed through urea or amide bonds. UV-irradiation of self-assembled urea-linked triphenylamine derivatives causes the formation of persistent radical cations in the chlorinated solvents, which subsequently induces the aggregation of TPPS. Transferring chirality of TPA derivatives to achiral TPPS J-aggregates leads to the chiral assemblies with remarkable chiroptical signals. The experimental results demonstrate that, TPA derivatives linked by the urea bond can effectively promote the aggregation of TPPS rather than those with the amide bond although the photo-generated radical cations are both produced. It is suggested that the urea-linked TPA derivatives are more favorable to stable radical cations and thus cause the formation of TPPS chiral J-aggregation. This work may open up an avenue for designing photo-modulated chiral supramolecular assemblies.

Enantiomeric Resolution and Enantiomer Isolation of H2 TPPS4 J-Aggregate from Aqueous Solution Is Enabled by Vortexes

Protonated achiral H₂ TPPS4 spontaneously self-arranges at acids pH and high ionic strength to build mesoscopic J-aggregates that are intrinsically chiral. According to the symmetry rule aggregation leads to a racemate that, however, can be unbalanced by chemical (chiral pollutants) or physical stimuli (as vortexing the solution). Vortexing the title racemate, in principle, might either induce chiral separation or chiral enrichment. Indeed, herein it is shown that vortices enable the resolution of this racemic solution exploiting the tendency to deposit, onto the quartz cuvette walls, of the enantiomer favored by the stirring sense. Simultaneously, over time, it was found that the opposite chiral conformation becomes prevalent in solution realizing a significant enantiomeric resolution. Therefore, after removing all stirring-favored chiral J-aggregate from the solution, the recovering and isolating of the desired enantiomers from the cuvette walls was successfully obtained without complex procedures. In this sense, it has been demonstrated that the stirring forces are executively able to fulfil the chiral separation in H₂ TPPS4 J-aggregates, employed as model of a self-assembled system in aqueous solution.

Self-Assembly of Chiro-Optical Materials from Nonchiral Oligothiophene-Porphyrin Derivatives and Random Coil Synthetic Peptides

Biomimetic chiral optoelectronic materials can be utilized in electronic devices, biosensors and artificial enzymes. Herein, this work reports the chiro-optical properties and architectural arrangement of optoelectronic materials generated from self-assembly of initially nonchiral oligothiophene-porphyrin derivatives and random coil synthetic peptides. The photo-physical- and structural properties of the materials were assessed by absorption-, fluorescence- and circular dichroism spectroscopy, as well as dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy and theoretical calculations. The materials display a three-dimensional ordered helical structure and optical activity that are observed due to an induced chirality of the optoelectronic element upon interaction with the peptide. Both these properties are influenced by the chemical composition of the oligothiophene-porphyrin derivative, as well as the peptide sequence. We foresee that our findings will aid in developing self-assembled optoelectronic materials with dynamic architectonical accuracies, as well as offer the possibility to generate the next generation of materials for a variety of bioelectronic applications.

pH-Responsive Polyketone/5,10,15,20-Tetrakis-(Sulfonatophenyl)Porphyrin Supramolecular Submicron Colloidal Structures

In this work, we prepared color-changing colloids by using the electrostatic self-assembly approach. The supramolecular structures are composed of a pH-responsive polymeric surfactant and the water-soluble porphyrin 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS). The pH-responsive surfactant polymer was achieved by the chemical modification of an alternating aliphatic polyketone (PK) via the Paal–Knorr reaction with N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine (HEDA). The resulting polymer/dye supramolecular systems form colloids at the submicron level displaying negative zeta potential at neutral and basic pH, and, at acidic pH, flocculation is observed. Remarkably, the colloids showed a gradual color change from green to pinky-red due to the protonation/deprotonation process of TPPS from pH 2 to pH 12, revealing different aggregation behavior.

Chirality Enhancement of Porphyrin Supramolecular Assembly Driven by a Template Preorganization Effect

Cationic polylysine promotes, under neutral conditions, the spontaneous aggregation of opposite charged ZnTPPS in water. Spectroscopic investigations evidence a different preorganization of ZnTPPS onto the polypeptide matrix depending on the chain length. Spinodal decomposition theory in confined geometry is used to model this mechanism by considering the time evolution of a homogeneous distribution of randomly adsorbed particles (porphyrins) onto a rodlike polyelectrolyte (polymer) of variable length L.

Transformation of H-Aggregates and J-Dimers of Water-Soluble Tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) Porphyrin in Polyion Complex Micelles

Tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) and polyelectrolyte poly(N-methyl-2-vinylpyridinium iodide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PMVP₄₁-b-PEO₂₀₅) can self-aggregate into polyion complex (PIC) micelles in alkaline aqueous solution. UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering were carried out to study PIC micelles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation method was applied to study the interaction of TCPP and PMVP₄₁-b-PEO₂₀₅. We found that the H-aggregates and J-dimers of anionic TCPP transformed in PIC micelles. H-aggregates of TCPP formed at the charge ratio of TCPP/PMVP₄₁-b-PEO₂₀₅ 1:2 and J-dimer species at the charge ratio above 1:4, respectively. It is worth noting that the transformation from H-aggregates to J-dimer species of TCPP occurred just by adjusting the ratio of polymer and TCPP rather than by changing other factors such as pH, temperature, and ions.

Chiral signs of TPPS co-assemblies with chiral gelators: role of molecular and supramolecular chirality

A dianionic tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) self-assembled into J-aggregates when it co-assembled with a chiral cationic amphiphile via supramolecular gelation. The chiral signs of TPPS J aggregates followed the supramolecular chirality of amphiphilic assemblies rather than the molecular chirality of the amphiphile.

Fabrication of Supramolecular Chirality from Achiral Molecules at the Liquid/Liquid Interface Studied by Second Harmonic Generation

We present the investigation into the supramolecular chirality of 5-octadecyloxy-2-(2-pyridylazo)phenol (PARC18) at water/1,2-dichloroethane interface by second harmonic generation (SHG). We observe that PARC18 molecules form supramolecular chirality through self-assembly at the liquid/liquid interface although they are achiral molecules. The bulk concentration of PARC18 in the organic phase has profound effects on the supramolecular chirality. By increasing bulk concentration, the enantiomeric excess at the interface first grows and then decreases until it eventually vanishes. Further analysis reveals that the enantiomeric excess is determined by the twist angle of PARC18 molecules at the interface rather than their orientational angle. At lower and higher bulk concentrations, the average twist angle of PARC18 molecules approaches zero, and the assemblies are achiral; whereas at medium bulk concentrations, the average twist angle is nonzero, so that the assemblies show supramolecular chirality. We also estimate the coverage of PARC18 molecules at the interface versus the bulk concentration and fit it to Langmuir adsorption model. The result indicates that PARC18 assemblies show strongest supramolecular chirality in a half-full monolayer. These findings highlight the opportunities for precise control of supramolecular chirality at liquid/liquid interfaces by manipulating the bulk concentration.

Distance-Dependent Measurements of the Conductance of Porphyrin Nanorods Studied with Conductive Probe Atomic Force Microscopy

Protocols for nanopatterning porphyrins on Au(111) were developed based on immersion particle lithography. Porphyrins with and without a central metal ion, 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin (TPP) and 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin cobalt(II) (CoTPP), were selected for study, which spontaneously formed nanorod geometries depending on concentration parameters. The elongated shapes of the nanorods offers an opportunity for successive distance-dependent conductive probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) measurements along the length of the nanorods. To prepare patterns of TPP and CoTPP nanorods, a mask of silica mesospheres was placed on gold substrates to generate nanoholes within an alkanethiol matrix film. The nanoholes prepared by particle lithography with an immersion step were backfilled with porphyrins by a second immersion step. By controlling the concentration and immersion interval, nanorods of porphyrins were generated with one end of the nanostructure attached to gold within a nanohole. The porphyrin nanorods exhibited slight differences in dimensions at the nanoscale to enable size-dependent measurements of conductive properties. The conductivity along the horizontal direction of the nanorods was evaluated with CP-AFM studies. Changes in conductivity were measured along the long axis of TPP and CoTPP nanorods. The TPP nanorods exhibited conductive profiles of an insulating material, and the CoTPP nanorods exhibited profiles of a semiconductor. The experiments demonstrate the applicability of particle lithography for preparing unique and functional surface platforms of porphyrins to measure distance-dependent conductive properties on gold.

Reorganization of porphyrin nanoparticle morphology driven by surface energetics

Organic nanoparticles (ONp) of an Fe(III) porphyrin appended with four [Formula: see text]-polyethyleneglyco-pyridinium moieties prepared in acetonitrile were deposited onto hydrophilic or hydrophobic Si surfaces. Self-organized by intermolecular interactions, ONp reorganize in response to environmental changes. Mechanisms for the control of nanoparticle morphologies and surface patterning by varying surface energies are discussed.

This review covers recent research on design strategies for the cooperative self-assembly of porphyrins with polymers and its implementation as bioactive assembly.

The unprecedented J-aggregate formation of rhodamine moieties induced by 9-phenylanthracenyl substitution

We report a substitution of 9-phenylanthracenyl group into rhodamine derivatives that can induce the J-aggregate formation of rhodamine moieties in the aqueous solution upon the addition of a halide ion. From X-ray crystallographic analysis, the dramatic red-shift in the absorption band (i.e. app. 100 nm) originates from the cooperative slipped-stacking of rhodamine and anthracene molecules.
