Aggregation behavior of sodium lauryl ether sulfate with a positively bicharged organic salt and effects of the mixture on fluorescent properties of conjugated polyelectrolytes

Ion effects on co-existing pseudo-phases in aqueous surfactant solutions: cryo-TEM, rheometry, and quantification

HYPOTHESIS

Specific alkaline cation effects control the area per headgroup of alkylester sulphates, which modifies the spontaneous packing of the surfactants. The resulting effective packing minimizes the total bending energy frustration and results in a Boltzmann distribution of coexisting pseudo-phases. These pseudo-phases constitute of micelles and other structures of complex morphology: cylindrical sections, end-caps, branching points, and bilayers, all in dynamic equilibrium. According to our model, excess of end-caps or excess of branching points lead to low viscosity, whereas comparable amounts of both structures lead to viscosity maxima. Relative occurrence of branching points and end-caps is the molecular mechanism at the origin of the salt-sensitive viscosity peak in the "salt-curve" (viscosity against salt concentration at fixed surfactant concentration). Up to now, and as indicated in former papers, this has been a pure model without microscopic verification.

EXPERIMENTS

In this work, we introduce explicit counting of the number of coexisting pseudo-phases as observed by state-of-the-art cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The model system used, i.e., sodium laurylethersulfate (SLES)/salt/water, is very common as part of cosmetic formulations. As added salts, we used Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+ chlorides. In parallel to imaging, we measured the macroscopic viscosities of the different solutions.

FINDINGS

With cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), we imaged a variety of morphologies (pseudo-phases) in the different aqueous surfactant/salt solutions: cylindrical micelles with end-caps, discs surrounded by "rims", entangled thread-like micelles with branching points, networks with gliding branching points, and bilayers. The relative chemical potentials of these morphologies could be approximated simply by counting the relative proportion of their occurrence. This simple multi-scale approach avoids any ad-hoc "specificity" assumption of ions, and is based on the bending energy model in an extended version of the Benedek "ladder model". It is capable of explaining and even quantifying the location of all viscosity peaks in the "salt-curves" for the different cations investigated, thus confirming the previously proposed model experimentally, and - thanks to cryo-TEM - for the first time on a microscopic scale. Moreover, this approach can also be applied when the added cations lead to newly observed pseudo-phases, such as discs and vesicles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that cryo-TEM is used, together with a mesoscopic model, to describe a macroscopic property such as viscosity and specific ion effects on it, without any a priori assumption about these effects. So, in total, we could a) confirm the predictions of the previously developed model, b) use cryo-TEM imaging and viscosity measurements to predict and find unusual morphologies when varying the cations of the added salt, and c) count the pseudo-phases in cryo-TEM micrographs to quantitatively explain the different nanostructures.

Nanostructuring with Surfactants: The Self-Assembly of a New Poly(thiophene-phenylene) Conjugated Polymer Bearing Azacrown Ether Pendant Groups

We report the synthesis of a new conjugated polymer bearing crown ether moieties, poly[(N(1-aza-[18]crown-6)carbamido)thiophene-2,5-diyl-alt-1,4-phenylene] (BG2). In water, BG2 forms a dispersion with a slightly cloudy appearance. We have studied the effect of adding surfactants, with different polar head groups, on these polymer-polymer aggregates. Special attention is given to the system with the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The combination of photophysical techniques with electrical conductivity, NMR (¹H, ¹³C, and ²⁷Na), DFT calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) provides a detailed picture on the behavior of the SDS/BG2 system in aqueous solution and in thin films. NMR, electric conductivity, and DFT results suggest that hydrophilic interactions occur between the polar headgroup of the surfactant (OSO₃^- Na⁺) and the aza-[18]-crown-6 moiety. DFT calculations confirmed the capability of BG2 to form stable complexes with the Na⁺ cations, where the cation can be either inside the azacrown cavity or sandwiched between the cavity and the polymer chain, which seem to determine the position of the surfactant hydrocarbon chain and, therefore, be responsible for the disruption of the BG2 aggregates and subsequent increase in the photoluminescence quantum yields. SANS measurements, made with hydrogenated and deuterated SDS in D₂O, clearly show how micron-sized aggregates of BG2 are broken down by SDS and then how BG2 becomes preferentially incorporated within joint colloidal particles of BG2 and SDS with increasing [SDS]/[BG2] molar ratio.

Interaction among Worm-like Micelles in Polyoxometalate-Based Supramolecular Hydrogel

The co-assembly of zwitterionic amphiphile and polyoxometalate is a new and promising technique to construct a hierarchical and multifunctional supramolecular hydrogel. To comprehensively investigate the assemble mechanism, zwitterionic amphiphiles with different cations, namely, 3-(1-hexadecyl-3-imidazolio) propanesulfonate (C₁₆IPS) and 3-(1-hexadecyl-2-methyl-3-imidazolio) propanesulfonate (C₁₆bIPS), were designed to complex with silicotungstic acid (HSiW). Hydrogen bonding between the oxygen atoms of HSiW and the protons on C-2 of the imidazolium rings and the steric effect significantly influence the morphology and rheological property of the hydrogel. Interestingly, cross-linked worm-like micelles in parallel, vertical, and tilted distribution were observed using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. In addition, these aggregates were further stacked into hexagonal phases on a large scale. Hence, deep insights into the relationship among the structure of zwitterionic amphiphile, self-assembled architecture, and the mechanical property of a polyoxometalate-based hydrogel were disclosed.

Effects of length and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of diamines on self-assembly of diamine/SDS gemini-like surfactants

This work studied gemini-like surfactants formed from anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic charged bola-type diamines with hydrophilic or hydrophobic spacers of different lengths using surface tension, small angle neutron scattering, isothermal titration microcalorimetry and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and the surface tension at CMC (γ_CMC) for all the diamine/SDS mixtures are markedly lower than that of SDS. The shorter diamines reduce γ_CMC to a greater extent regardless of the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the diamines. Meanwhile, either the hydrophobic diamine with a longer spacer or the hydrophilic diamine with a shorter spacer is more beneficial to decrease CMC and leads to the transition from spherical micelles into rodlike or wormlike micelles. This is principally because of the formation of gemini-like surfactants by the electrostatic binding between SDS and the diamines, where the electrostatic repulsion between the adjacent headgroups of SDS becomes much weaker due to the electrostatic binding of oppositely charged diamine with SDS, and the longer hydrophobic spacer may also bend into the hydrophobic domain of micelles to promote micellar growth. However, the hydrophilic spacers are more compatible with the headgroup region, leading to micelles with a larger curvature. This work contributes to the understanding of the relationship between the properties of constructed gemini-like surfactants and the natures of connecting molecules, and provides guidance to efficiently improve the performance of surfactants.

A pH-responsive wormlike micellar system of a noncovalent interaction-based surfactant with a tunable molecular structure

Responsive wormlike micelles are very useful in a number of applications, whereas it is still challenging to create dramatic viscosity changes in wormlike micellar systems. Here we developed a pH-responsive wormlike micellar system based on a noncovalent constructed surfactant, which is formed by the complexation of N-erucamidopropyl-N,N-dimethylamine (UC₂₂AMPM) and citric acid at the molar ratio of 3 : 1 (EACA). The phase behavior, aggregate microstructure and viscoelasticity of EACA solutions were investigated by macroscopic appearance observation, rheological and cryo-TEM measurements. It was found that the phase behavior of EACA solutions undergoes transition from transparent viscoelastic fluids to opalescent solutions and then phase separation with white floaters upon increasing the pH. Upon increasing the pH from 2.03 to 6.17, the viscosity of wormlike micelles in the transparent solutions continuously increased and reached ∼683 000 mPa s at pH 6.17. As the pH was adjusted to 7.31, the opalescent solution shows a water-like flowing behaviour and the η₀ rapidly declines to ∼1 mPa s. Thus, dramatic viscosity changes of about 6 magnitudes can be triggered by varying the pH values without any deterioration of the EACA system. This drastic variation in rheological behavior is attributed to the pH dependent interaction between UC₂₂AMPM and citric acid. Furthermore, the dependence on concentration and temperature of the rheological behavior of EACA solutions was also studied to assist in obtaining the desired pH-responsive viscosity changes.

Aqueous Self-Assembly of Y-Shaped Amphiphilic Block Copolymers into Giant Vesicles

The preparation and aqueous self-assembly of newly Y-shaped amphiphilic block polyurethane (PUG) copolymers are reported here. These amphiphilic copolymers, designed to have two hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) tails and one hydrophobic alkyl tail via a two-step coupling reaction, can self-assemble into giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) (diameter ≥ 1000 nm) with a direct dissolution method in aqueous solution, depending on their Y-shaped structures and initial concentrations. More interesting, the copolymers can self-assemble into various distinct nano-/microstructures, such as spherical micelles, small vesicles, and GUVs, with the increase of their concentrations. The traditional preparation methods of GUVs generally need conventional amphiphilic molecules and additional complicated conditions, such as alternating electrical field, buffer solution, or organic solvent. Therefore, the self-assembly of Y-shaped PUGs with a direct dissolution method in aqueous solution demonstrated in this study supplies a new clue to fabricate GUVs based on the geometric design of amphiphilic polymers.

Surfactant-Mediated Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly of Crystalline/Ionic Complexed Block Copolymers in Aqueous Solution

A series of crystalline/ionic complexed block copolymers (BCPs) with various compositions have been prepared by sequential reactions. The BCPs with different hydrophilic fractions can self-assemble into various morphologies, such as spindlelike, rodlike, and spherical micelles with different crystallinity of the core. Bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) is added as a surfactant to induce the morphological transition of BCPs in aqueous media. The introduced AOT can be tightly bound to the cationic units, and a water-insoluble unit in the corona forms, leading to a reduced tethering density. Consequently, morphological variety changing from rods to platelets to fibril to dendrite-like micelles can be observed.

Facile construction of gemini-like surfactants at the interface and their effects on the interfacial tension of a water/model oil system

Gemini-like surfactants were fabricated by combining sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and butane-1,4-bis(methylimidazolium bromide) at the interface and evaluated for their ability to reduce the interfacial tension between water and a model oil.

Discrimination of Metalloproteins by a Mini Sensor Array Based on Bispyrene Fluorophore/Surfactant Aggregate Ensembles

Fluorescent sensor arrays with pattern recognition ability have been widely used to detect and identify multiple chemically similar analytes. In the present work, two particular bispyrene fluorophores containing hydrophilic oligo(oxyethylene) spacer, 6 and 4, were synthesized, but one is with and the other is without cholesterol unit. Their ensembles with cationic surfactant (CTAB) assemblies realize multiple fluorescence responses to different metalloproteins, including hemoglobin, myoglobin, ferritin, cytochrome c, and alcohol dehydrogenase. The combination of fluorescence variation at monomer and excimer emission of the two binary sensor ensembles enables the mini sensor array to provide a specific fingerprint pattern to each metalloprotein. Linear discriminant analysis shows that the two-ensemble-sensor-based array could well discriminate the five tested metalloproteins. The present work realizes using a mini sensor array to accomplish discrimination of complex analytes like proteins. They also display a very high sensitivity to the tested metalloproteins with detection limits in the range of picomolar concentration.
