Autophobic dewetting of a poly(methyl methacrylate) thin film on a silicon wafer treated in good solvent vapor

Interfacial Selective Study on the Gelation Behavior of Aqueous Methylcellulose Solution via a Quartz Crystal Microbalance

It is important to understand the interfacial structure and physical properties of a polymer material to improve its function. In this study, we used a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements to evaluate the viscoelasticity and structure of an aqueous methylcellulose solution near the gold interface. The apparent shear modulus, which was calculated from the complex frequency, was used to assess gelation behavior. The apparent shear modulus determined via the QCM suggested high-frequency rheological properties that reflected the relaxation of skeletal stretching and rotational motion of polymer segments, as well as cooperative motion of the various functional groups. The gelation temperature was found to be lowered at the interface in comparison with that of the bulk. It is suggested that the QCM can evaluate the shear modulus accompanying the gelation near the interface. The interfacial segregation on the gold substrate caused by the surface free energy and long-range van der Waals interaction was observed from NR measurements.

Processing Induced Nonequilibrium Behavior of Polyvinylpyrrolidone Nanofilms Revealed by Dewetting

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofilms prepared by spin-coating have vast applications in biological and microdevice fields. However, detailed knowledge of processing induced nonequilibrium behavior of PVP nanofilms and solutions for minimizing residual stresses toward high-quality films has still been lacking. In the present study, we first explored the rapid film formation process via statistics on nascent holes. Next, by employing dewetting as a major probe, we revealed that many processing conditions, particularly previously overlooked variables like the atmosphere, substrates, and immersion time, were correlated substantially with the degree of nonequilibrium of nanofilms. Proper aging temperature and time were demonstrated essential for releasing residual stresses and achieving more equilibrium nanofilms. This work offered abundant experimental evidence in the building relationship between the processing and nonequilibrium nature of polymer nanofilms, which were crucial for their preparation and application.

Interfacial Irreversibly and Loosely Adsorbed Layers Abide by Different Evolution Dynamics

Within the interfacial region of the substrate, polymer chains can form the inner irreversibly adsorbed and outer loosely adsorbed layers upon annealing. Owing to their different constrained environments, the evolution dynamics of the two layers are supposedly different. To trace such evolution dynamics, we thus resorted to sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy, using polystyrene (PS) with a series of molar masses on sapphire substrates. By plotting the integrated SFG intensity as a function of the annealing time, we found that the inner irreversibly adsorbed layer had two segmental evolution processes (replacement and local structural relaxation), and the outer loosely adsorbed layer had the monotonical evolution dynamics (structural relaxation), with both evolving toward the dissipation of the interfacial molecular order of the backbones. A critical evolution time was defined for the inner irreversibly adsorbed layer, and a characteristic relaxation time was defined for the outer loosely adsorbed layer. With respect to the molar mass, phenomenologically, both the critical evolution time and the characteristic relaxation time show an asymptotic increase. In summary, this SFG investigation provides the first-hand experimental data on understanding the structural evolution dynamics of the interfacial adsorbed polymer chains, which would gradually split up into the irreversibly adsorbed layer and loosely adsorbed layer upon annealing.

Dewetting of polymer thin films on modified curved surfaces: preparation of polymer nanoparticles with asymmetric shapes by anodic aluminum oxide templates

We study the dewetting behaviors of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films coated in the cylindrical nanopores of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates by thermal annealing. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS) are introduced to modify the pore surfaces of the AAO templates to induce the dewetting process. By using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the dewetting-induced morphology transformation from the PMMA thin films to PMMA nanoparticles with asymmetric shapes can be observed. The sizes of the PMMA nanoparticles can be controlled by the original PMMA solution concentrations. The dewetting phenomena on the modified nanopores are explained by taking into account the excess intermolecular interaction free energy (ΔG). This work opens a new possibility for creating polymer nanoparticles with asymmetric shapes in confined geometries.

Dewetting-Induced Photoluminescent Enhancement of Poly(lauryl methacrylate)/Quantum Dot Thin Films

A new method for enhancing photoluminescence from quantum dot (QD)/polymer nanocomposite films is proposed. Poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) thin films containing embedded QDs are intentionally allowed to undergo dewetting on substrates by exposure to a nonsolvent vapor. After controlled dewetting, films exhibited typical dewetting morphologies with increased amounts of scattering that served to outcouple photoluminescence from the film and reduce internal light propagation within the film. Up to a 5-fold enhancement of the film emission was achieved depending on material factors such as the initial film thickness and QD concentration within the film. An increase in initial film thickness was shown to increase the dewetted maximum feature size and its characteristic length until a critical thickness was reached where dewetting became inhibited. A unique light exposure-based photopatterning method is also presented for the creation of high contrast emissive patterns as guided by spatially controlled dewetting.

Competitive concurrence of surface wrinkling and dewetting of liquid crystalline polymer films on non-wettable substrates

Polymeric thin films coated on non-wettable substrates undergo film-instabilities, which are usually manifested as surface deformation in the form of dewetting or wrinkling. The former takes place in fluidic films, whereas the latter occurs in solid films. Therefore, there have rarely been reports of systems involving simultaneous deformations of dewetting and wrinkling. In this study, we propose polymeric thin films of liquid crystalline (LC) mesogens prepared on a non-wettable Si substrate and apply a treatment of plasma irradiation to form a thin polymerized layer at the surface. The resulting compressive stress generated in the surface region drives the formation of wrinkles, while at the same time, dipolar attraction between LC molecules induces competitive cohesive dewetting. Intriguing surface structures were obtained whereby dewetting-like hole arrays are nested inside the randomly propagated wrinkles. The structural features are readily controlled by the degree of surface cross-linking, hydrophilicity of the substrates, and the LC film thickness. In particular, dewetting of LC mesogens is observed to be restricted to occur at the trough regions of wrinkles, exhibiting the typical behavior of geometrically confined dewetting. Finally, wrinkling-dewetting mixed structures are separated from the substrate in the form of free standing films to demonstrate the potential applicability as membranes.

Surface-induced assembly of sophorolipids

The surface self-assembly properties of acidic sophorolipids, a bolaform microbial glycolipid with pH-responsive properties, were studied based on the chemical nature of the support and pH of the solution.

Instability, self-organization and pattern formation in thin soft films

The free surface of a thin soft polymer film is often found to become unstable and self-organizes into various meso-scale structures. In this article we classify the instability of a thin polymer film into three broad categories, which are: category 1: instability of an ultra-thin (<100 nm) viscous film engendered by amplification of thermally excited surface capillary waves due to interfacial dispersive van der Waals forces; category 2: instability arising from the attractive inter-surface interactions between the free surface of a soft film exhibiting room temperature elasticity and another rigid surface in its contact proximity; and category 3: instability caused by an externally applied field such as an electric field or a thermal gradient, observed in both viscous and elastic films. We review the salient features of each instability class and highlight how characteristic length scales, feature morphologies, evolution pathways, etc. depend on initial properties such as film thickness, visco-elasticity (rheology), residual stress, and film preparation conditions. We emphasize various possible strategies for aligning and ordering of the otherwise isotropic structures by combining the essential concepts of bottom-up and top-down approaches. A perspective, including a possible future direction of research, novelty and limitations of the methods, particularly in comparison to the existing patterning techniques, is also presented for each setting.

Polymer films removed from solid surfaces by nanostructured fluids: microscopic mechanism and implications for the conservation of cultural heritage

Complex fluids based on amphiphilic formulations are emerging, particularly in the field of conservation of works of art, as effective and safe liquid media for the removal of hydrophobic polymeric coatings. The comprehension of the cleaning mechanism is key to designing tailored fluids for this purpose. However, the interaction between nanostructured fluids and hydrophobic polymer films is still poorly understood. In this study, we show how the combination of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides interesting and complementary insight into this process. We focused on the interaction between an ethyl methacrylate/methyl acrylate 70:30 copolymer film deposited onto a glass surface and a water/nonionic surfactant/2-butanone (MEK) ternary system, with MEK being a good solvent and water being a nonsolvent for the polymer. Our results indicate a synergy between the organic solvent and the surfactant assemblies: MEK rapidly swells the outer layers of the polymer film allowing for the subsequent diffusion of solvent molecules, while the amphiphile decreases the interfacial energy between the polymeric coating and the liquid phase, favoring dewetting and dispersion of swollen polymer droplets in the aqueous phase. The chemical nature of the surfactant and the microstructure of the assemblies determine both the kinetics and the overall efficiency of polymer removal, as assessed by comparing the behavior of similar formulations containing an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS).

Solvent-responsive wettability of self-assembled monolayers of dithiooctanoic acid derivatives bearing N,N-disubstituted amide groups

We have designed and synthesized two dithiooctanoic acid derivatives bearing N,N-disubstituted amide groups and used them to fabricate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold surface. These films showed a reversible changes in wettability, one of which was indicated by surface contact angle switching between 40° and 59° upon alternating treatment with ethanol and cyclohexane. NMR experimental results of a model molecule suggest that the solvent-responsive wettability of the SAMs could be related with the changes in the relative populations of two stereoisomers of amide. The solvent responsivity of SAMs fabricated from other two amides was also studied, and the results confirmed that N,N-disubstitution was essential for an amide-containing SAM to have stimuli responsivity. Thus, introduction of a functional group exhibiting controlled isomerization of conformation could be an effective strategy for designing new stimuli-responsive materials.

Effect of Long Range Interactions on the Glass Transition Temperature of Thin Polystyrene Films

The glass transition temperature (T_g) of thin polystyrene (PS) films supported on silicon wafers with oxide layers of varying thickness was characterized by the temperature dependence of the film thickness using ellipsometry. This allowed us to uncover how a long-range interaction affects the T_g of polymer films. As previously reported using a variety of methods, the T_g decreased with decreasing film thickness. However, the extent was not the same among the reports. In this study, we found that the T_g attenuation of a PS film of a given thickness was dependent on the oxide layer thickness of the silicon wafer via the long-range interaction.

Effect of film thickness on morphological evolution in dewetting and crystallization of polystyrene/poly(ε-caprolactone) blend films

In this Article, the morphological evolution in the blend thin film of polystyrene (PS)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated via mainly AFM. It was found that an enriched two-layer structure with PS at the upper layer and PCL at the bottom layer was formed during spinning coating. By changing the solution concentration, different kinds of crystal morphologies, such as finger-like, dendritic, and spherulitic-like, could be obtained at the bottom PCL layer. These different initial states led to the morphological evolution processes to be quite different from each other, so the phase separation, dewetting, and crystalline morphology of PS/PCL blend films as a function of time were studied. It was interesting to find that the morphological evolution of PS at the upper layer was largely dependent on the film thickness. For the ultrathin (15 nm) blend film, a liquid-solid/liquid-liquid dewetting-wetting process was observed, forming ribbons that rupture into discrete circular PS islands on voronoi finger-like PCL crystal. For the thick (30 nm) blend film, the liquid-liquid dewetting of the upper PS layer from the underlying adsorbed PCL layer was found, forming interconnected rim structures that rupture into discrete circular PS islands embedded in the single lamellar PCL dendritic crystal due to Rayleigh instability. For the thicker (60 nm) blend film, a two-step liquid-liquid dewetting process with regular holes decorated with dendritic PCL crystal at early annealing stage and small holes decorated with spherulite-like PCL crystal among the early dewetting holes at later annealing stage was observed. The mechanism of this unusual morphological evolution process was discussed on the basis of the entropy effect and annealing-induced phase separation.

Patterning of red, green, and blue luminescent films based on CaWO4:Eu3+, CaWO4:Tb3+, and CaWO4 phosphors via microcontact printing route

The multicolor patterned luminescent films of CaWO(4):Eu(3+) (red), CaWO(4):Tb(3+) (green), and pure CaWO(4) (blue) on quartz substrates were fabricated by the facile and low-cost microcontact printing (μCP) method combining with the Pechini sol-gel route. On the basis of the μCP process, a hydrophobic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was first created on the hydrophilic surface of quartz substrates by poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) mold printing, and then, the multicolor patterned luminescent films were selectively deposited on the hydrophilic regions via a spin coating process and heating treatment. The X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the structure and fluorescence properties of the corresponding samples. The results demonstrate that the μCP process can be used for patterning the inorganic phosphor materials and have potential for fabricating rare-earth luminescent pixels for the applications of display devices.

Domain coalescence-induced nucleation and anomalous growth of holes in thin polymer blend film

The phase evolution of a thin polymer blend film of polystyrene (PS) and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) triggered by solvent annealing is examined at both the bulk and single-(macro)molecule levels using wide-field microscopy (WFM). The transitions between different evolutionary stages in the nucleation and growth process are clearly visualized in real time and without intermittent breaks. The nucleation of PS holes arises from the coalescence and growth of P2VP domains and the holes expand in a complex manner involving the dewetting of PS and the absorption of P2VP domains into the holes.

Topographically uniform but chemically heterogeneous nanostructures by nanoimprinting demixed polymer blends

Nanoimprint lithography is applied to fabricate topographically uniform patterns onto demixed polymer blend films. The high fidelity of pattern replications is achieved for 150 nm polystyrene (PS)/polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) blend films with varying compositions. When imprinted at 150 °C, the morphology of the blend across the patterned structures is similar to that in the as-casted films. Significant morphological evolutions occur for patterns imprinted at 180 and 210 °C. For all the patterns, PMMA is found to segregate into the residual layer, driven by the preferential wetting of PMMA onto the SiO(x) surfaces. The combined domain coarsening and preferential wetting of PMMA leads to the formations of unique encapsulated structures within the topographically uniform features, ranging from blocks to threads.

Controlling profiles of polymer dots by switching between evaporation and condensation

We found that the profiles of the dots formed from the drying droplets of polymer solution can be modified by switching between the evaporation and condensation processes. When a polymer dot is exposed to solvent vapor during a certain time and is dried again, the dot profile changes from ringlike to flat. To obtain a flat dot, there exists an optimal exposure time. We conjecture that the change of the dot profile is due to the refluidization of the polymer film. Our results imply a new possibility for controlling the dot profile in inkjet printing technologies.
