Interfacial electronic structure of gold nanoparticles on Si(100): alloying versus quantum size effects

Implementation of π-π interaction in AuNPs@GDY to boost the bioelectrocatalysis in enzymatic biofuel cells

The main challenges (sluggish electron transfer, low energy density) hinder the future application of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs), which urgent to take effective measures to solve these issues. In this work, a composite of Au nanoparticles decorated graphdiyne (AuNPs@GDY) is fabricated and employed as the carrier of enzyme (G6PDH), and a mechanism based on π-π interaction of electron transfer is proposed to understand bioelectrocatalysis processes. The results show that the AuNPs@GDY composite exhibits the highest current density among the three materials (GDY, AuNPs, and AuNPs@GDY), which is 3.4 times higher than that of GDY and 2.5 times higher than that of AuNPs. Furthermore, the results reveal that the AuNPs could increase the loading of enzymes and provide more active site for reaction, while GDY provides highly π-conjugated structure and unique sp/sp2-hybridized linkages interface. This work provides new insights to explore a theoretical basis for the development of more efficient bioelectrocatalytic systems.

Preparation of Hydrophobic Au Catalyst and Application in One-Step Oxidative Esterification of Methacrolein to Methyl Methacrylate

The water produced during the oxidative esterification reaction occupies the active sites and reduces the activity of the catalyst. In order to reduce the influence of water on the reaction system, a hydrophobic catalyst was prepared for the one-step oxidative esterification of methylacrolein (MAL) and methanol. The catalyst was synthesized by loading the active component Au onto ZnO using the deposition-precipitation method, followed by constructing the silicon shell on Au/ZnO using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to introduce hydrophobic groups. Trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) was used as a hydrophobic modification reagent to prepare hydrophobic catalysts, which exhibited a water droplet contact angle of 111.2°. At a temperature of 80 °C, the hydrophobic catalyst achieved a high MMA selectivity of over 95%. The samples were characterized using XRD, N2 adsorption, ICP, SEM, TEM, UV-vis, FT-IR, XPS, and water droplet contact angle measurements. Kinetic analysis revealed an activation energy of 22.44 kJ/mol for the hydrophobic catalyst.

Enhancement of Metal Nanostructure Deposition on Silicon Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures by Galvanic Replacement

We report a chemically motivated, single-step method to enhance metal deposition onto silicon laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) using reactive laser ablation in liquid (RLAL). Galvanic replacement (GR) reactions were used in conjunction with RLAL (GR-RLAL) to promote the deposition of Au and Cu nanostructures onto a Si LIPSS. To increase the deposition of Au, sacrificial metals Cu, Fe, and Zn were used; Fe and Zn also enhanced the deposition of Cu. We show that the deposited metal content, surface morphology, and metal crystallite size can be tuned based on the difference in electrochemical potentials of the deposited and sacrificial metal. Compared to the Au and Cu reference samples, GR more than doubled the metal content on the LIPSS and reduced metal crystallite sizes by up to 20%. The ability to tune the metal content and crystalline domain size simultaneously makes GR-RLAL a potentially useful approach in the manufacturing of functional metal-LIPSS materials such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates.

New reaction path for long-chain hydrocarbons by electrochemical CO2 and CO reduction over Au/stainless steel

The Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis is recognized for its ability to produce long-chain hydrocarbons. In this study, we aimed to replicate F-T synthesis using electrochemical CO2 reduction and CO reduction reactions on a stainless steel (SS) support with a gold (Au) overlayer. Under CO2-saturated conditions, the presence of Au on the SS surface led to the formation of CH4 and a range of hydrocarbons (CnH2n and CnH2n+2, n = 2-7), while bare SS primarily produced hydrogen. The Au(10 nm)/SS exhibited the highest hydrocarbon production in CO2-saturated phosphate, indicating a synergistic effect at the Au-SS interface. In CO-saturated conditions, bare SS also produced long-chain hydrocarbons, but increasing Au thickness resulted in decreased production due to poor CO adsorption. Hydrocarbons were formed through both direct and indirect CO adsorption pathways. Anderson-Schulz-Flory analysis confirmed surface CO hydrogenation and C-C coupling polymerization following conventional F-T synthesis. The C2 hydrocarbons exhibited distinct behavior compared to C3-5 hydrocarbons, suggesting different reaction pathways. Despite low reduction product levels, our EC method successfully replicated F-T synthesis using the Au/SS electrode, providing valuable insights into C-C coupling mechanisms and electrochemical production of long-chain hydrocarbons. Depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed significant changes in surface elemental compositions before and after EC reduction.

Electrochemical Ce(III)/Ce(IV) Redox Behavior and Ce Oxide Nanostructure Recovery over Thio-Terpyridine-Functionalized Au/Carbon Paper Electrodes

Understanding the electrochemical behaviors of Ce(III)/Ce(IV) ions is essential for better treatment, separation, and recycling of lanthanide (Ln) and actinide (An) elements. Herein, electrochemical redox behavior and interconversion of Ce(III)/Ce(IV) ions and their recoveries were demonstrated over newly developed thio-terpyridine-functionalized Au-modified carbon paper electrodes in acidic and neutral electrolytes. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometry were performed for the electrodes with and without thio-terpyridine functionalization. Ce oxide nanostructure recovery was successfully conducted by amperometry, and the electrodeposited nanostructured Ce materials were fully characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction crystallography, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Geometry optimization and the electronic energy state calculations were conducted by density functional theory at the B3LYP/GENECP level for the complexes of Ce(III) and Ce(IV) ions with the thio-terpyridine in an aqueous state. The present unique results provide valuable information on understanding redox behaviors of Ln and An ions for their recycling and treatment processes.

Fabrication of Gold-Silicon Nanostructured Surfaces with Reactive Laser Ablation in Liquid

Laser processing is an emerging technique capable of synthesizing metal-silicon composite surfaces for various applications. However, little is known about the chemical composition of these laser-processed surfaces, and the reaction mechanisms leading to their formation are poorly understood. In this work, we report the formation of gold-silicon nanostructured surfaces through reactive laser ablation in liquid. Silicon wafers were immersed in pH-controlled solutions of KAuCl₄ and processed with ultrashort laser pulses. Gold deposition on the silicon wafers was found to depend on the pH of the precursor solution: neutral solutions (pH ∼6.3) resulted in much higher gold deposition than acidic or basic solutions. Laser processing of silicon wafers in water followed by immersion in the KAuCl₄ solution resulted in lower gold deposition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and depth profiling showed the existence of both gold (Au⁰) and gold-silicide (Au_xSi) phases on the surfaces. Under both types of processing conditions, the gold atomic fraction and gold-silicide content increased with depth to at least 150 nm into the surface of the silicon wafer, although significantly more gold and gold-silicide were formed when the silicon was ablated in KAuCl₄ solution as compared to immersion in KAuCl₄ after ablation in water. Based on these data and existing literature on laser processing of silicon, we propose mechanisms that explain the observed gold penetration depth and its deposition dependence on solution pH. The mechanistic understanding gained in this work may be useful for synthesizing a variety of metal-silicon composite surfaces through laser processing to prepare functional materials such as catalysts and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates.

Nanoscale-Induced Formation of Silicide around Gold Nanoparticles Encapsulated in a-Si

Decorating thin-film solar cells with plasmonic nanoparticles is being pursued in order to improve device efficiency through increased scattering and local field enhancement. Gold nanoparticles are particularly interesting due to their chemical inertness and plasmon resonance in the visible range of the spectrum. In this work, gold nanoparticles fabricated by a gas aggregation nanoparticle source and embedded in a-Si (a commercial solar cell material) are studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The formation of gold silicide around the nanoparticles is investigated, as it has important consequences for the optical and electronic properties of the structures. Different from previous studies, in which the silicide formation is observed for gold nanoparticles and thin films grown on top of crystalline silicon or silica, it is found that silicide formation is largely enhanced around the nanoparticles, owing to their increased surface/volume ratio. A detailed gold silicide formation mechanism is presented based on the results, and strategies for optimizing the design of plasmonically enhanced solar cells with gold nanoparticles encapsulated in a-Si are discussed.

Gold-Nanocluster-Assisted Nanotransfer Printing Method for Metasurface Hologram Fabrication

Given the development of nano/microscale patterning techniques, efforts are being made to use them for fabricating metasurfaces. In particular, by using abrupt phase discontinuities, it is possible to generate holographic images from two-dimensional nanoscale-patterned metasurfaces. However, the fabrication of metasurface holograms is hindered by the high costs and long fabrication time involved, because the process requires expensive equipment such as that for electron-beam lithography. Therefore, it is difficult to realize metasurface holograms in a fast and repetitive manner. In this study, we propose a method for fabricating metasurface holograms based on the nanotransfer printing of the desired nanoscale patterns, which is assisted by Au nanoclusters, while controlling the bonding energy based on the shape of the deposited Au layer. Robust covalent bonds are formed between the Si of the adhesive used and the O of the SiO2 layer in order to transfer the deposited Au onto the transparent substrate quickly. It was found that the fabricated metasurface hologram coincides with the one designed by computer-generated holography. The proposed method should lead to a significant breakthrough in the fabrication of holograms based on different types of metasurfaces at a low cost in a fast, repetitive manner with various metals.

Bimetallic Au@M (M = Ag, Pd, Fe, and Cu) Nanoarchitectures Mediated by 1,4-Phenylene Diisocyanide Functionalization

Hybridization with gold has attracted a lot of attention in many application areas such as energy, nanomedicine, and catalysts. Here, we demonstrate electrochemical hybridization of two different metals by using bare and 1,4-phenylene diisocyanide (PDI) functionalized gold nanoislands (GNIs) supported on a Si substrate. As pristine GNIs are not tightly locked on the Si surface, bimetallic Au@M (M = Ag, Pd, Fe, and Cu) core-shell type nanostructures are produced by an electric-field-induced clustering of GNIs and metal deposition. On the other hand, upon functionalization of GNIs by PDI, 3D island growth on the functionalized GNI template is observed as PDI acts as a protector against the electric-field-induced clustering. Depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals no discernible difference in the interfacial electronic structures of hybrid metals prepared by using pristine and PDI-functionalized GNI templates. This work demonstrates a new approach to produce a secured template and to manipulate growth of hybrid nanoparticles on this template supported on a Si substrate by using electrodeposition and organic functionalization.

Selective Deposition of an Ultrathin Pt Layer on a Au-Nanoisland-Modified Si Photocathode for Hydrogen Generation

Platinum, being the most efficient and stable catalyst, is used in photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. However, a minimal amount of Pt with maximum catalytic activity is required to be used to minimize the cost of production. In this work, we use an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and less Pt-consuming method to prepare PEC devices for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Pt monolayer catalyst is selectively deposited on a Au-nanoisland-supported boron-doped p-type Si (100) photocathode. The PEC device based on the Si photocathode with an ultralow loading of the Pt catalyst exhibits a comparable performance for the HER to that of devices with a thick Pt layer. In addition, we demonstrate that by using a thin TiO₂ layer deposited by atomic layer deposition photo-oxidation of the Si photocathode can be blocked resulting in a stable PEC performance.

Citrate-Capped Hybrid Au-TiO2 Nanomaterial for Facile and Enhanced Electrochemical Hydrazine Oxidation

Effective and facile electrochemical oxidation of chemical fuels is pivotal for fuel cell applications. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine on a citrate-capped Au-TiO₂-modified glassy carbon electrode, which follows two different oxidation paths. These two pathways of hydrazine oxidation are ascribed to occur on Au and the activated TiO₂ surface of the Au-TiO₂ hybrid electrocatalyst. This activation was achieved through molecular capping of the Au-TiO₂ surface by citrate, which leads to favorable hydrazine oxidation with a lower Tafel slope compared to that of the clean surface of the respective materials, that is, Au and TiO₂.

Ion induced dewetting of Au-Si on a SiO2 surface: composite nanodot evolution and wettability transition

A nanodot array morphology gradually develops on SiO₂ surface when a thin bi-layer of Au and Si undergoes ion irradiation. An increasing amount of gold silicide is detected as islands on the insulator surface evolve into nanodots as a function of increasing ion fluence. Different stages of evolution from islands to nanodots are found to be driven by the localized melting of Au along the ion-track and dewetting of the metal film. Dewetting is accompanied by sputter-erosion and mixing of Au and Si at the bi-layer interface due to ion energy deposition. Interestingly, a gradual transition in wettability of the surface from the hydrophilic to the hydrophobic one is observed with the growth of nanodots, which is correlated with the compositional variation. The experimental results indicate a route towards the controlled growth of composite nanodots on an insulator surface having hydrophobic properties using ion irradiation.

Reductive surface synthesis of gold nanoparticles on silicate glass and their biochemical sensor applications

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were directly synthesized on the surface of polyvinylsilazane (PVSZ, -[(vinyl)SiH-NH2]-) without use of extra reductive additives. The reductive Si-H functional groups on the surface of cured PVSZ acted as surface bound reducing agents to form gold metal when contacted with an aqueous Au precursor (HAuCl4) solution, leading to formation of Au NPs adhered to silicate glass surface. The Au NPs-silicate platforms were preliminarily tested to detect Rhodamine B (1 μM) by surface enhanced Raman scattering. Furthermore, gold microelectrode obtained by post-chemical plating was used as an integrated amperometric detection element in the polydimethylsilane-glass hybrid microfluidic chip.

The role of the organic layer functionalization in the formation of silicon/organic layer/metal junctions with coinage metals

The design of silicon/alkyl layer/metal junctions for the formation of optimal top metal contacts requires knowledge of the mechanistic and energetic aspects of the interactions of metal atoms with the modified surface. This involves (a) the interaction of the metal with the terminal groups of the organic layer, (b) the diffusion of metal atoms through the organic layer and (c) the reactions of metal atoms with the silicon surface atoms. The diffusion through the monolayer and the metal catalyzed breakage of Si-C bonds must be avoided to obtain high quality junctions. In this work, we performed a comprehensive density functional theory investigation to identify the reaction pathways of all these processes. In the absence of a reactive terminal group, gold atoms may penetrate through a compact alkyl monolayer on Si(111) with no energy barrier. However, the presence of thiol terminal groups introduces a high energy barrier which blocks the diffusion of metals into the monolayer. The diffusion barriers increase in the order Ag < Au < Cu and correlate with the stability of metal-thiolate complexes whereas the barriers for the formation of metal silicides increase in the order Cu < Au < Ag in correlation with the increasing metallic radii. The reactivity of gold clusters with functionalized Si(111) surfaces was also investigated. Metal silicide formation can only be avoided by a compact monolayer terminated by a reactive functional group. The mechanistic and energetic picture obtained in this work contributes to understanding of the factors that influence the quality of top metal contacts during the formation of silicon/organic layer/metal junctions.

Nano-zinc oxide damages spatial cognition capability via over-enhanced long-term potentiation in hippocampus of Wistar rats

This study focused on the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) on spatial learning and memory and synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus of young rats, and tried to interpret the underlying mechanism. Rats were randomly divided into four groups. Nano-ZnO and phosphate-buffered saline were administered in 4-week-old rats for 8 weeks. Subsequently, performance in Morris water maze (MWM) was determined, and then long-term potentiation (LTP) and depotentiation were measured in the perforant pathway to dentate gyrus (DG) in anesthetized rats. The data showed that, (1) in MWM, the escape latency was prolonged in the nano-ZnO group and, (2) LTP was significantly enhanced in the nano-ZnO group, while depotentiation was barely influenced in the DG region of the nano-ZnO group. This bidirectional effect on long-term synaptic plasticity broke the balance between stability and flexibility of cognition. The spatial learning and memory ability was attenuated by the alteration of synaptic plasticity in nano-ZnO-treated rats.

Colloidally templated two-dimensional conducting polymer arrays and SAMs: binary composition patterning and chemistry

A facile approach and strategy toward binary-composition, two-dimensional (2D) patterned surfaces of conducting polymer periodic arrays, together with thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is described. The method involved a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB)-like deposition of latex microsphere particles, electropolymerization via cyclic voltammetric (CV) techniques, and self-assembly of an amphiphile. The LB-like technique enabled the monolayer deposition of different sizes of polystyrene (PS) particles in hexagonal packing arrangement on planar substrates. Combining the LB-like method with CV electropolymerization is advantageous because it provides deposition control of a polymer interconnected network, controlled composition ratio of polymer and SAMs, and control of 2D size and spacing of the spherical void pattern. Electrochemical-quartz crystal microbalance (EC-QCM) in situ monitoring of the film deposition quantified a constant and linear growth rate, with varying viscoelastic behavior of the conducting polymer adsorption on planar and PS-templated substrates. The dual-patterned surface provided a good imaging contrast as observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Complementary analyses such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total internal reflection infrared (ATR IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and static contact angle measurements were used to characterize the formation of the patterned surface. The versatility of the method enables the potential for making various types of quantitative binary compositions and patterned surfaces using different combinations of conducting polymer or functional SAMs, which can be extended in the future to polymer brushes and layer-by-layer assembly of various materials.

Electrochemical pd nanodeposits on a au nanoisland template supported on Si(100): formation of pd-au alloy and interfacial electronic structures

Palladium nanoparticles have uniformly been electrodeposited on a Au nanoisland template (NIT) supported on a Si(100) substrate, which exhibits Au-rich, Pd-rich, and/or polycrystalline mixed structures upon annealing to 700 °C. Glancing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) elemental analysis of the as-deposited sample both show metallic Pd, while depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further reveals the presence of Pd-Au (and PdxSi) at the interfaces of the Pd nanodeposits on the Au NIT. Upon the sample being annealed to 700 °C, both Pd 3d(3/2) and Au 4f(7/2) XPS peaks are found to shift to lower binding energies, which further confirms Pd-Au alloy formation. The convergence of respective GIXRD features of metallic Au and Pd toward intermediate peak positions supports the formation of alloy and their crystalline nature. Depth-profiling XPS analysis of the annealed sample further shows that the Pd nanoparticles are found to consist of an ultrathin shell of PdO2, and a PdO-rich (i.e., Pd-poor) inner-core, which is consistent with the observed GIXRD patterns of PdO and Pd-Au alloy but indiscernible PdO2. We compare the above results with the experimental results for electrodeposited Pd on a bare Si(100) substrate. Our study provides new insight into the formation of Pd-Au alloy composite on Si by electrochemistry. The easy control of the Pd, Au, and Pd-Au composition in the nanodeposits as illustrated in the present method offers new flexibility for developing hybrid nanocatalysts and other applications.
