Abstract
This work describes the preparation and characterization of smectite clay partially exchanged with tetrabutylammonium ions (TBA(+)) and its subsequent deposition onto glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for application to the preconcentration electroanalysis of metal ions (Cd, Pb, and Cu). Such partial exchange of TBA(+) induces the expansion of the interlayer region between the clay sheets (as ascertained by XRD) while maintaining its ion exchange capacity, which resulted in enhanced mass transport rates (as pointed out by electrochemical monitoring of permeability properties of these thin (organo)clay films on GCE). This principle was applied here to the anodic stripping square wave voltammetric analysis of metal ions after accumulation at open circuit. Among others, detection limits as low as 3.6×10(-8)M for copper and 7.2×10(-8)M for cadmium have been achieved.

Abstract
Hemoglobin (Hb) is a promiscuous protein that not only transports oxygen, but also catalyzes several biotransformations. A novel in vitro catalytic activity of Hb is described. Bovine Hb and human erythrocytes were found to display ATRPase activity, i.e., they catalyzed the polymerization of vinyl monomers under conditions typical for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGA), and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) were polymerized using organobromine initiators and the reducing agent ascorbic acid in acidic aqueous solution. In order to avoid chain transfer from polymer radicals to Hb's cysteine residues, the accessible cysteines were blocked by a reaction with a maleimide. The formation of polymers with bromine chain ends, relatively low polydispersity indices (PDI), first order kinetics and an increase in the molecular weight of poly(PEGA) and poly(PEGMA) upon conversion indicate that control of the polymerization by Hb occurred via reversible atom transfer between the protein and the growing polymer chain. For poly(PEGA) and poly(PEGMA), the reactions proceeded with a good to moderate degree of control. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) gel electrophoresis, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and time-resolved ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy revealed that the protein was stable during polymerization, and only underwent minor conformational changes. As Hb and erythrocytes are readily available, environmentally friendly, and nontoxic, their ATRPase activity is a useful tool for synthetic polymer chemistry. Moreover, this novel activity enhances the understanding of Hb's redox chemistry in the presence of organobromine compounds.

Abstract
Hemoglobin was immobilized in Mg(2)Al-Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) by coprecipation method at pH 9.0. Interactions between Hb and LDH particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction patterns, FTIR, UV-vis, circular dichroism, and fluorescence spectroscopies. Morphology and porosity of Mg(2)Al-Hb(cop) biohybrid are analyzed from SEM and TEM images and permeability measurement. The direct electron transfer of immobilized Hb was studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the electrocatalytic activity was evaluated at glassy carbon modified with this Mg(2)Al-Hb(cop) biohybrid. Even though the percentage of electroactive Hb was less than 2%, this bioelectrode showed a low detection limit (1.5 x 10(-8) M) and a very high sensitivity (37 A/M cm(2)) for the amperometric detection of H(2)O(2).

Abstract
Two-dimensional layered inorganic solids, such as cationic clays and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also defined as anionic clays, have open structures which are favourable for interactions with enzymes and which intercalate redox mediators. This review aims to show the interest in clays and LDHs as suitable host matrices likely to immobilize enzymes onto electrode surfaces for biosensing applications. It is meant to provide an overview of the various types of electrochemical biosensors that have been developed with these 2D layered materials, along with significant advances over the last several years. The different biosensor configurations and their specific transduction procedures are discussed.
