Modeling ion binding to humic substances: elastic polyelectrolyte network model

Mobility of Rare Earth Elements in Coastal Aquifer Materials under Fresh and Brackish Water Conditions

The indispensable role of rare earth elements (REEs) in manufacturing high-tech products and developing various technologies has resulted in a surge in REE extraction and processing. The latter, in turn, intensifies the release of anthropogenic REEs into the environment, particularly in the groundwater system. REE contamination in coastal aquifer systems, which serve as drinking and domestic water sources for large populations, demands a thorough understanding of the mechanisms that govern REE transport and retention in these environments. In this study, we conducted batch and column experiments using five representative coastal aquifer materials and an acid-wash sand sample as a benchmark. These experiments were conducted by adding humic acid (HA) to the REE solution under fresh and brackish water conditions using NaCl, representing different groundwater compositions in coastal aquifers. The REEs were shown to be most mobile in the acid-wash sand and natural sand samples, followed by two types of low-carbonate calcareous sandstone and one type of high-calcareous sandstone and the least mobile in red loamy sand. The mobility of REEs, found in solution primarily as REE-HA complexes, was controlled mainly by the retention of HA, which increases with increasing ionic strength and surface area of the aquifer material. Furthermore, it was found that the presence of carbonate and clay minerals reduces the REE mobility due to enhanced surface interactions. The higher recoveries of middle-REE (MREE) in the column experiment effluents observed for the acid-wash sand and natural sand samples were due to the higher stabilization of MREE-HA complexes compared to light-REE (LREE) and heavy-REE (HREE) HA complexes. Higher HREE recoveries were observed for the calcareous sandstones due to the preferred complexation of HREE with carbonate ions and for the red loamy sand due to the preferred retention of LREE and MREE by clay, iron, and manganese minerals.

Mean Activity Coefficients of Humic Acids as Physicochemical Characteristics of Their Behavior in Water Environment

In this work, the dissociation of humic acids is investigated from the point of view of their mean activity coefficients. They are determined on the basis of two different concepts: sparingly soluble substance and multistep mechanism. It was found that the mean activity coefficients are generally higher, if the traditional concept is applied to the data, excepting the HA-A sample. Both the used concepts provide the mean activity coefficients dependent on the ionic strength, the amount of dissolved humic acids, and the types of electrolyte added in the studied suspensions. Their values based on the concept of a multistep mechanism and determined for humic acids in NaCl and NaI form a continuous curve and the individual character of their ions did not assert. It means that activity coefficients were affected only by the ionic strength and valence factor of the electrolytes irrespective of their chemical composition. The mean activity coefficients obtained for humic acids in HCl are lower in comparison with NaCl and NaI due to the common ion H⁺. Comparing the results obtained for individual humic acids, we can state that the results obtained for the HA-E sample are very different from those of other samples. It seems that its solubility is very high, but the majority of the dissolved particles remained in the molecular form and only a small amount of ions is formed.

Pb(II) binding to humic substances: an equilibrium and spectroscopic study

The binding of Pb(II) to humic acids is studied through an approach combining equilibrium and spectroscopic measurements. The methods employed are potentiometric and fluorometric titrations, fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEM) and IR spectroscopy. Potentiometric titration curves are analyzed using the NICA equations and an electrostatic model treating the humic particles as an elastic polyelectrolyte network. EEMs are analyzed using parallel factor analysis, decomposing the signal in its independent components and finding their dependence on Pb(II) activity. Potentiometric results are consistent with bimodal affinity distributions for Pb(II) binding, whereas fluorometric titrations are explained by monomodal distributions. EEM analysis is consistent with three independent components in the humic fluorescence response, which are assigned to moieties with different degree of aromaticity. All three components show a similar quenching behavior upon Pb(II) binding, saturating at relatively low Pb(II) concentrations. This is attributed to metal ion induced aggregation of humic molecules, resulting in the interaction between the aromatic groups responsible for fluorescence; this is also consistent with IR spectroscopy results. The observed behavior is interpreted considering that initial metal binding (observed as strongly binding sites), correspond to bi- or multidentate complexation to carboxylate groups, including binding between groups of different humic molecules, promoting aggregation; further metal ions (observed as weakly binding sites) bind to single ligand groups.

Metal cation complexation with natural organic matter in aqueous solutions: molecular dynamics simulations and potentials of mean force

Natural organic matter (NOM, or humic substance) has a known tendency to form colloidal aggregates in aqueous environments, with the composition and concentration of cationic species in solution, pH, temperature, and the composition of the NOM itself playing important roles. Strong interaction of carboxylic groups of NOM with dissolved metal cations is thought to be the leading chemical interaction in NOM supramolecular aggregation. Computational molecular dynamics (MD) study of the interactions of Na(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+) with the carboxylic groups of a model NOM fragment and acetate anions in aqueous solutions provides new quantitative insight into the structure, energetics, and dynamics of the interactions of carboxylic groups with metal cations, their association, and the effects of cations on the colloidal aggregation of NOM molecules. Potentials of mean force and the equilibrium constants describing overall ion association and the distribution of metal cations between contact ion pairs and solvent-separated ions pairs were computed from free MD simulations and restrained umbrella sampling calculations. The results provide insight into the local structural environments of metal-carboxylate association and the dynamics of exchange among these sites. All three cations prefer contact ion pair to solvent-separated ion pair coordination, and Na(+) and Ca(2+) show a strong preference for bidentate contact ion pair formation. The average residence time of a Ca(2+) ion in a contact ion pair with the carboxylic groups is of the order of 0.5 ns, whereas the corresponding residence time of a Na(+) ion is only between 0.02 and 0.05 ns. The average residence times of a Ca(2+) ion in a bidentate coordinated contact ion pair vs a monodentate coordinated contact ion pair are about 0.5 and 0.08 ns, respectively. On the 10 ns time scale of our simulations, aggregation of the NOM molecules occurs in the presence of Ca(2+) but not Na(+) or Mg(2+). These results agree with previous experimental observations and are explained by both Ca(2+) ion bridging between NOM molecules and decreased repulsion between the NOM molecules due to the reduced net charge of the NOM-metal complexes. Simulations on a larger scale are needed to further explore the relative importance of the different aggregation mechanisms and the stability of NOM aggregates.

Convergence-optimized procedure for applying the NICA-Donnan model to potentiometric titrations of humic substances

Despite the high success of the NICA-Donnan (N-D) model to describe the interaction of protons and metal ions with natural organic matter, the large number of fit parameters is a major hindrance to its capacity to provide unique numerical solutions. This well-known difficulty is reflected in the unusually low value of the generic proton binding constant for carboxylic-type groups of fulvic acid (pK(H1) = 2.34), and to some extent of humic acid (2.93), and by the considerable covariance of the other generic N-D parameters. In some studies, the number of parameters obtained by regression is reduced by estimating some values independently with other techniques. Alternatively, the applicability of the model can be improved by devising a rigorous simulation procedure, which constrains the model-fit to converge toward chemically and physically realistic values. A procedure based on three successive iterations is proposed, and the solution is shown to be stable and invariant with the initial set of parameter values. The new generic parameters, in particular pK(H1)(FA) = 3.54 and pK(H1)(HA) = 3.87, derived from the same data set as the previous generic parameters, are in better agreement with literature data.
