Polymerizable biomimetic vesicles with controlled local presentation of adhesive functional DOPA groups

Catalytic Chiral Photochemistry Sensitized by Chiral Hosts-Grafted Upconverted Nanoparticles

Singlet chiral photocatalysis is highly challenging. Herein, we report fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based chiral photocatalysis with γ-cyclodextrin (CD)-grafted lanthanide-doped upconverted nanoparticles (UCNP). The CD-modified UCNP strongly emits in the UV wavelength region upon excitation with a 980 nm laser, which selectively sensitizes the photosubstrates complexed by CD on the surface of UCNP through FRET. Therefore, enantiodifferentiating photocyclodimerization of anthracene or naphthalene derivatives sensitized by the CD-modified UCNP gives photoproducts in good enantioselectivity even in the presence of a catalytic amount of CD-modified UCNP. Moreover, the photocatalysts are readily separated and could be reused for at least six cycles without decreasing the enantioselectivity.

A platform for functionalization of cellulose, chitin/chitosan, alginate with polydopamine: A review on fundamentals and technical applications

Nature provides concepts and materials with interesting functionalities to be implemented in innovative and sustainable materials. In this review, it is illustrated how the combination of biological macromolecules, i.e. polydopamine and polysaccharides (cellulose, chitin/chitosan, alginate), enables to create functional materials with controlled properties. The mussel-adhesive properties rely on the secretion of proteins having 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine amino acid with catechol groups. Fundamental understanding on the biological functionality and interaction mechanisms of dopamine in the mussel foot plaque is presented in parallel with the development of synthetic analogues through extraction or chemical polymer synthesis. Subsequently, modification of cellulose, chitin/chitosan or alginate and their nanoscale structures with polydopamine is discussed for various technical applications, including bio- and nanocomposites, films, filtration or medical membranes, adhesives, aerogels, or hydrogels. The presence of polydopamine stretches far beyond surface adhesive properties, as it can be used as an intermediate to provide additional performance of hydrophobicity, self-healing, antimicrobial, photocatalytic, sensoric, adsorption, biocompatibility, conductivity, coloring or mechanical properties. The dopamine-based 'green' chemistry can be extended towards generalized catechol chemistry for modification of polysaccharides with tannic acid, caffeic acid or laccase-mediated catechol functionalization. Therefore, the modification of polysaccharides with polydopamine or catechol analogues provides a general platform for sustainable material functionalization.

Engineering the Cellulose Fiber Interface in a Polymer Composite by Mussel-Inspired Adhesive Nanoparticles with Intrinsic Stress-Sensitive Responsivity

The interface between the fiber and matrix plays a key role in polymer composite performance and is adapted by chemical modification of the fiber surface. In this study, biomimetic adhesive nanoparticles formed by the self-assembly of polymer-peptide amphiphiles with a polydiacetelyene tail and local presentation of 3-hydroxyphenylalanine or DOPA adhesive groups at the outer surface are adsorbed on cellulose fiber surfaces for (i) probing the nanoscale adhesion in combination with a functionalized atomic force microscopy tip and (ii) evaluating the macroscale adhesion by single-fiber pull out tests from a solvent cast cellulose/poly(methyl methacrylate) composite. The interface properties are altered by changing the structure of the nanoparticles into either vesicular or planar shapes depending on the number of incorporated amphiphiles with adhesive groups and the nanoparticle concentration at the cellulose fiber surface. Based on nanoscale adhesive measurements, the adhesion force on modified cellulose fibers increases as a function of the nanoparticle concentration and is higher for the vesicular than for the planar nanoparticle structures. However, the local presentation and number of adhesive groups seems to rule over the surface roughness effects. From macrosale tests, an optimum concentration of adhesive vesicles provides maximum interface strength, while the formation of nanoparticle multilayers at higher concentrations results in lower interface adhesion. In addition, the intrinsic fluorescent properties of the adhesive vesicles under mechanical stress provide a unique tool to evaluate local failure and stress concentrations in the fiber/matrix interface. The incorporation of both adhesive and sensitive properties and versatility of the adhesive functional group may be an attractive strategy for the surface modification of fiber-reinforced composites in general.

A 3D networked polydiacetylene sensor for enhanced sensitivity

Immobilization of polydiacetylene (PDA) vesicles on the surface of the modified carbon nanotube (CNT)-networked pillared structures afforded a 3D networked sensor system. A more than three order increase in the sensitivity was observed with the 3D networked sensor matrix in comparison with a conventional 2D PDA sensor system.

A polymerizable supramolecular approach for the fabrication of patterned magnetic nanoparticles

A straightforward method for the preparation of patterned magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) was developed. The polymerizable supramolecular approach afforded finely patterned MNPs on a solid substrate after a sequential UV-irradiation-wet etching-calcination process with an MNP-embedded diacetylene film.

A soluble, low-temperature thermochromic and chemically reactive polydiacetylene

The majority of polydiacetylenes (PDAs) described to date display thermochromic transitions above room temperature. By following a strategy that employs headgroups that do not participate in strong interactions, we have designed and prepared a liquid diacetylene (DA) monomer that solidifies at a temperature near 0 °C. The isocyanate-containing DA monomer, DA-NCO, having this property does not undergo polymerization in its liquid state at room temperature. However, UV irradiation of frozen DA-NCO at 0 °C causes the instantaneous formation of a blue PDA (PDA-NCO). Interestingly, PDA-NCO was found to display a sharp blue-to-red color transition at a temperature near 11 °C. By taking advantage of its room temperature liquid-phase property, we were able to readily transfer the DA monomer to solid substrates by using common stamping and writing methods used for creating patterned PDA images. In addition, PDA-NCO dissolves in chloroform, giving a yellow solution that becomes red and simultaneously generates polymer aggregates when hexane is added. Finally, the isocyanate moieties present in PDA-NCO have been utilized to differentiate 1° from 2° and 3° amines owing to the fact that a chloroform solution of PDA-NCO undergoes a rapid yellow-to-red color change associated with an insoluble urea-forming reaction with primary amines.

Rapidly curable chitosan-PEG hydrogels as tissue adhesives for hemostasis and wound healing

Chitosan-poly(ethylene glycol)-tyramine (CPT) hydrogels were rapidly formed in situ using horseradish peroxidase and hydrogen peroxide to explore their performance as efficient tissue adhesives. A poly(ethylene glycol) modified with tyramine was grafted onto a chitosan backbone to enhance the solubility of the chitosan and to crosslink into three-dimensional networks. The elastic modulus of the hydrogels could be controlled by changing the crosslinking conditions, and the mechanical strength influenced the tissue adhesiveness of the hydrogels. The hydrogels showed the adhesiveness ranging from 3- to 20-fold that of fibrin glue (Greenplast®). The hemostatic ability of the hydrogels was evaluated on the basis that bleeding from liver defects was significantly arrested by the combined effect of the adhesiveness of the hydrogels and the hemostatic property of the chitosan materials. The enzymatic crosslinking method enabled the water-soluble chitosan to rapidly form hydrogels within 5s of an incision into the skin of rats. Histological results demonstrated that the CPT hydrogels showed superior healing effects in the skin incision when compared to suture, fibrin glue and cyanoacrylate. By 2weeks post-implantation, the wound was completely recovered, with a newly formed dermis, due to the presence of the CPT hydrogels in the incision. These results suggest that the in situ curable chitosan hydrogels are very interesting and promising tissue adhesive devices for biomedical applications.
