Synthesis of Bis(N,N-diethyl)aniline-Based, Nonlinear, Optical Chromophores with Increased Electro-Optic Activity by Optimizing the Thiolated Isophorone Bridge. Symmetry (Basel) 2022. Abstract
Six nonlinear, optical chromophores, Z1–Z6, based on the bis(N,N-diethyl)aniline-derived donor and thiolated isophorone bridge, were designed and synthesized. The bis(N,N-diethyl)aniline-derived donor was applied in a chromophore with thiolated isophorone as an electron bridge for the first time. In particular, the bridge parts of chromophores Z2–Z6 were modified with different functional groups, including tert-butyltrimethylsilane and tert-butyl(methyl)diphenylsilane derivative: 1,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene and alkylaniline cyanoacetate, respectively. Density functional theory calculations suggested this series of chromophores show much greater hyperpolarizability than traditional, nonlinear, optical chromophores due to strong electron donor ability. These chromophores, Z1–Z6, showed very high poling efficiencies due to the large steric hindrance and hyperpolarizability of the chromophores. A large poling efficiency (2.04 ± 0.08 nm2/V2) and r33 value (193 pm/V) were achieved for polymeric thin films doped with 25 wt% chromophore Z6 at 1310 nm.

Abstract
The ability to tune the microstructures, bandgap, conductance, chemical environment and thermal storage of carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene and fullerenes by optical modulation or response is important to design and fabricate advanced optoelectronic nanodevices. This review is focused on optical control and regulation of structures, properties, interface and interaction of a new generation of photo-responsive carbon nanomaterials/azobenzene moieties (Carbon-AZO) hybrids. The optical switching properties of Carbon-AZO hybrids resulting from the photo-isomerization between trans and cis isomers are highlighted and discussed in terms of photo-energy conversion devices including switches, sensors, detectors, fuels and storage. A wide range of advanced energy conversion devices using Carbon-AZO hybrids can be developed in the future by the optimization of the chemical structure, steric conformation, electrostatic environment and functionalization of specific molecules.

Abstract
"Push-pull" phenyltetraene-based chromophores are too sensitive to be incorporated into Diels-Alder-type cross-linkable polymers due to the reactivity of its diene segment with maleimides. A facile synthetic route has been explored to incorporate a methoxy group into the R position of such chromophores, which reduces their diene reactivity during the poling and lattice hardening process. The poled polymers with one of such chromophores doped in a cross-linked polymer lattice showed ultrahigh electro-optic activities, up to 306 pm/V at 1310 nm.

Abstract
The prediction of nonlinear electro-optic (EO) behavior of molecules with quantum methods is the first step in the development of organic-based electro-optic devices. Typical EO molecules may require calculations with several hundred electrons, which prevents all but the fastest methods (semiempirical and density functional theory (DFT)) from being used for EO estimation. To test the reliability of these methods, we compare dipole moments, polarizabilities, and first-order hyperpolarizabilities for a wide range of structures of experimental interest with Hartree-Fock (HF), intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO), and DFT methods. The relative merits of molecules are consistently predictable with every method.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A facile synthetic route has been developed to convert an electron-rich, sterically hindered dialkylaminodienone into a conjugated dialkylaminotrienal with good yield. The derived dialkylaminotetraene-type nonlinear optical chromophores possess an all-trans conformation and can be functionalized with fluoro-dendron to provide proper shape modification for poling. Polymers doped with two examples of these chromophores in high concentrations have been poled to afford ultra-large electrooptic coefficients (r(33)) of 208 and 262 pm/V, respectively, at the measuring wavelength of 1.31 mum.
