Effect of Solvent Polarity in Ionomer Solutions

Dilute polyelectrolyte solutions: recent progress and open questions

Polyelectrolytes are a class of polymers possessing ionic groups on their repeating units. Since counterions can dissociate from the polymer backbone, polyelectrolyte chains are strongly influenced by electrostatic interactions. As a result, the physical properties of polyelectrolyte solutions are significantly different from those of electrically neutral polymers. The aim of this article is to highlight key results and some outstanding questions in the polyelectrolyte research from recent literature. We focus on the influence of electrostatics on conformational and hydrodynamic properties of polyelectrolyte chains. A compilation of experimental results from the literature reveals significant disparities with theoretical predictions. We also discuss a new class of polyelectrolytes called poly(ionic liquid)s that exhibit unique physical properties in comparison to ordinary polyelectrolytes. We conclude this review by listing some key research challenges in order to fully understand the conformation and dynamics of polyelectrolytes in solutions.

Catalytic Etherification of ortho-Phosphoric Acid for the Synthesis of Polyurethane Ionomer Films

The etherification reaction of ortho-phosphoric acid (OPA) with polyoxypropylene glycol in the presence of tertiary amines was studied. The reaction conditions promoting the catalytic activity of triethanolamine (TEOA) and triethylamine (TEA) in the low-temperature etherification of OPA were established. The catalytic activity of TEOA and TEA in the etherification reaction of phosphoric acid is explained by the hydrophobic-hydrophilic interactions of TEA with PPG, leading, as a result of collective interactions, to a specific orientation of polyoxypropylene chains around the tertiary amine. When using triethylamine, complete etherification of OPA occurs, accompanied by the formation of branched OPA ethers terminated by hydroxyl groups and even the formation of polyphosphate structures. When triethanolamine is used as a catalyst, incomplete etherification of OPA with polyoxypropylene glycol occurs and as a result, part of the phosphate anions remain unreacted in the composition of the resulting aminoethers of ortho-phosphoric acid (AEPA). In this case, the hydroxyl groups of triethanolamine are completely involved in the OPA etherification reaction, but the catalytic activity of the tertiary amine weakens due to a decrease in its availability in the branched structure of AEPA. The kinetics of the etherification reaction of OPA by polyoxypropylene glycol catalyzed by TEOA and TEA were studied. It was shown that triethanolamine occupies a central position in the AEPA structure. The physico-mechanical and thermomechanical properties of polyurethane ionomer films obtained on the basis of AEPA synthesized in a wide temperature range were studied.

Mitigating Early Phase Separation of Aliphatic Random Ionomers by the Hydrophobic H-Bond Acceptor Addition

This study reports a new phenomenon whereby the ionic content of a random ionomer was increased by the introduction of a hydrophobic modifier. In the current study, the ionomer synthesized from the solution polymerization of the three vinyl monomers, which are polar hydrophobic monomers acrylonitrile (AN), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and ionic monomer potassium 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate (SPM), encountered an early phase separation problem when the ionic content exceeded a certain threshold value. However, the addition of a strongly hydrophobic monomer, 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate (TFPM), during the copolymerization is able to restrain this phase separation trend, consequently allowing 50% more of SPM units to be incorporated and uniformly distributed in the ionomer and achieving a random copolymer chain. The ionic clustering of the SPM units, which is the cause for the phase separation, was reduced as a result. The resulting random ionomer was demonstrated to be a superior proton conducting material over its ternary originator. This is due to the fact that TFPM possesses acidic protons, which brings about an association of TFPM with SPM and GMA via hydrogen bonding. This study could impact the synthesis of random ionomers by free radical polymerization since monitoring ionic content and improving ionic unit distribution in ionomers are issues encountered in several industries (e.g., the healthcare industry).

Poly(ether urethane)s incorporating long alkyl side-chains with terminal carboxyl groups as fatty acid mimics: synthesis, structural characterization and protein adsorption

The object of this work was to produce polyurethanes with greater affinity for albumin (Alb) and improved hemocompatibility by introduction of carboxyl-terminated alkyl side-chains that better mimic fatty acids, in contrast to methyl terminated alkyl side-chains used previously. Synthesis of poly(ether urethane)s (PEUs) with long alkyl side-chains via a multi-step solution addition polymerization is described. The synthesis is based upon the polymerization of a diisocyanate pre-polymer with various chain extenders and reaction with Br-terminated compound in the final stage. The side-chains had terminal methyl or carboxylic groups, and were attached either directly to the polymer backbone or to an oligo(ethylene glycol) spacer. The bulk structure of the PEUs was confirmed by 1H-NMR and the surface polymer structure was characterized by ToF-SIMS. The influence of the incorporated C16-alkyl, C16-carboxyalkyl and oxyethylene-C16-carboxyalkyl side-chains attached to the polymer backbone on fibrinogen (Fg) and Alb adsorption from blood plasma, and Fg adsorption from buffer solutions and binary mixtures with Alb was measured. Incorporation of C16-alkyl or C16-carboxyalkyl side-chains into PEUs caused relatively small changes in Fg and Alb adsorption. PEUs with oxyethylene-C16-carboxyalkyl side-chains exhibited the lowest Fg adsorption and the highest Alb adsorption among all the tested polymers.
