Abstract
Polymers containing cyclic derivatives are a new class of macromolecular topologies with unique properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of a triblock copolymer containing a spirocyclic mid-block. To achieve this, a spirocyclic polystyrene (cPS) mid-block was first synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a tetra-functional initiator, followed by end-group azidation and a copper (I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. The resulting functional cPS was purified using liquid chromatography techniques. Following the esterification of cPS, a macro-ATRP initiator was obtained and used to synthesize a poly (methyl methacrylate)-block-cPS-block-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-cPS-b-PMMA) triblock copolymer. This work provides a synthetic strategy for the preparation of a spirocyclic macroinitiator for the ATRP technique and as well as liquid chromatographic techniques for the purification of (spiro) cyclic polymers.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive experimental rheological dataset for purified entangled ring polystyrenes and their blends with linear chains in nonlinear shear and elongation. In particular, data for shear stress growth coefficient, steady-state shear viscosity, and first and second normal stress differences are obtained and discussed as functions of shear rate as well as molecular parameters (molar mass, blend composition and decreasing molar mass of linear component in blend). Over the extended parameter range investigated, rings do not exhibit clear transient undershoot in shear, in contrast to their linear counterparts and ring-linear blends. For the latter, the size of the undershoot and respective strain appear to increase with shear rate. Universal scaling of strain at overshoot and fractional overshoot (ratio of maximum to steady-state shear stress growth coefficient) indicates subtle differences in the shear-rate dependence between rings and linear polymers or their blends. The shear thinning behaviour of pure rings yields a slope nearly identical to predictions (-4/7) of a recent shear slit model and molecular dynamics simulations. Data for the second normal stress difference are reported for rings and ring-linear blends. While N 2 is negative and its absolute value stays below that of N 1 , as for linear polymers, the ratio -N 2 /N 1 is unambiguously larger for rings compared to linear polymer solutions with the same number of entanglements (almost by factor of two), in agreement with recent non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Further, -N 2 exhibits slightly weaker shear rate dependence compared to N 1 at high rates, and the respective power-law exponents can be rationalized in view of the slit model (3/7) and simulations (0.6), although further work is needed to unravel the molecular original of the observed behaviour. The comparison of shear and elongational stress growth coefficients for blends reflects the effect of ring-linear threading which leads to significant viscosity enhancement in elongation. Along the same lines, the elongational stress is much larger than the first normal stress in shear, and their ratio is much larger for rings and ring-linear blends compared to linear polymers. This conforms the interlocking scenario of rings and their important role in mechanically reinforcing linear matrices.

Abstract
Published data on the characterization of unfolded proteins in dilute solutions in aqueous guanidine hydrochloride are analyzed to show that the data are not fit by either the random flight or wormlike chain models for linear chains. The analysis includes data on the intrinsic viscosity, root-mean-square radius of gyration, from small-angle X-ray scattering, and hydrodynamic radius, from the translational diffusion coefficient. It is concluded that residual structure consistent with that deduced from nuclear magnetic resonance on these solutions can explain the dilute solution results in a consistent manner through the presence of ring structures, which otherwise have an essentially flexible coil conformation. The ring structures could be in a state of continual flux and rearrangement. Calculation of the radius of gyration for the random-flight model gives a similar reduction of this measure for chains joined at their endpoints, or those containing loop with two dangling ends, each one-fourth the total length of the chain. This relative insensitivity to the details of the ring structure is taken to support the behavior observed across a range of proteins.

Abstract
The nature of salts introduced in the chromatographic mobile phase to promote on-line electrospray ionization was shown to be a key parameter in the optimization of LCCC-MS couplings, both using non-polar (Si-C18) and polar (Si-NH2) stationary phases. The critical conditions of poly(ethylene glycol), which reflect a compensation process between exclusion and interaction effects, were strongly modified when changing the size of the cation in the eluent. This phenomenon could be attributed to interactions between the cation and water molecules from the mobile phase, in the case of the non-polar stationary phase, giving rise to a salting out effect due to a lowered solvent quality of the eluent; or between the cation and amino-modified silanols of the polar stationary phase, inducing a decrease of the surface adsorptivity. Accordingly, increasing the size of the cation in the mobile phase caused the polymer molecules to be eluted according to the adsorption mode using non-polar adsorbent and according to the exclusion mode using polar stationary phase.

Abstract
Different cationic adducts of poly(ethylene oxide)/polystyrene block co-oligomers could be produced by adjusting the salt concentration in the mobile phase using a coupling between liquid chromatography at critical conditions and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Formation of doubly lithiated adducts was observed at high LiCl concentration (1 mM) while lowering the salt concentration down to 0.1 mM allowed co-oligomers to be ionized with both a proton and a lithium. The fragmentation pathways observed to occur upon collision-induced dissociation of ionized copolymers were shown to be highly dependent on the nature of the cationic adducts. As a result, complementary structural information could be reached by performing MS/MS experiments on different ionic forms of the same co-oligomer molecule. On one hand, release of the nitroxide end-group as a radical from [M+2Li](2+) was followed by a complete depolymerization of the polystyrene block, allowing both this end-group and the polystyrene segment size to be determined. On the other hand, [M+H+Li](2+) precursor ions mainly dissociated via reactions involving bond cleavages within the nitroxide moiety, yielding useful structural information on this end-group.

Abstract
Coupling of liquid chromatography at critical conditions (LCCC) with on-line mass spectrometry (MS) detection was implemented via an electrospray ionization (ESI) interface, using a mobile phase containing the cationizing agent. Critical conditions established for poly(ethylene oxide) were used to characterize a poly(ethylene oxide)/polystyrene block copolymer (PEO-b-PS) in both MS and MS/MS modes. As co-oligomer molecules were successfully separated according to the PS block size, structural information could be reached from simplified MS spectra. The microstructure of this copolymer, synthesized by nitroxide-mediated polymerization, could further be unambiguously characterized in LCCC/ESI-MS/MS experiments since the PS block size could be reached by both the co-oligomer chromatographic behavior and its MS/MS pattern.

Abstract
A characteristic feature of synthetic polymers is their dispersity in molar mass and, in many cases, chemical composition. Since dispersity is highly relevant in relation to polymer properties, ongoing efforts are being put in the development of appropriate analysis methods. In this respect, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is well known for the determination of molar mass distributions. Methods for chemical composition distributions are less mature than SEC and mainly include liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry and the combination of these techniques. The term chemical composition distribution is considered broad in this paper, i.e. for the chemical composition distribution of a (co)polymer backbone, for the functionality type distribution of a polymers' functional end groups, for the block length distribution of a block copolymer, for the branching distribution and for the tacticity distribution. In this paper, analysis methods for all types of chemical composition distributions are reviewed. Special attention is paid to practical requirements and common misconceptions that sometimes arise. Applications within the last 5 years are summarized.

Abstract
The reaction products of polystyryllithium with air were characterized by size-exclusion chromatography, temperature gradient interaction chromatography and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Polystyryllithium was prepared by anionic polymerization of styrene initiated with sec-butyllithium in cyclohexane under an Ar atmosphere. It was confirmed that polystyryl ketone, polystyryl alcohol, and directly coupled polystyrene were the major products in addition to the normally terminated polystyrene, which is consistent with the results in the literature. We could also identify the presence of methoxy and carboxylic acid end capped polystyrenes as well as dipolystyryl ether as minor products. Among the minor products, dipolystyryl ether has not been reported yet.
