Synthesis and Multidimensional NMR Characterization of PDMS-b-PS Prepared by Combined Anionic Ring-Opening and Nitroxide-Mediated Radical Polymerization

Effect of OH-Group Introduction on Gas and Liquid Separation Properties of Polydecylmethylsiloxane

Membrane development for specific separation tasks is a current and important topic. In this work, the influence of OH-groups introduced in polydecylmethylsiloxane (PDecMS) was shown on the separation of CO₂ from air and aldehydes from hydroformylation reaction media. OH-groups were introduced to PDecMS during hydrosilylation reaction by adding 1-decene with undecenol-1 to polymethylhydrosiloxane, and further cross-linking. Flat sheet composite membranes were developed based on these polymers. For obtained membranes, transport and separation properties were studied for individual gases (CO₂, N₂, O₂) and liquids (1-hexene, 1-heptene, 1-octene, 1-nonene, heptanal and decanal). Sorption measurements were carried out for an explanation of difference in transport properties. The general trend was a decrease in membrane permeability with the introduction of OH groups. The presence of OH groups in the siloxane led to a significant increase in the selectivity of permeability with respect to acidic components. For example, on comparing PDecMS and OH-PDecMS (~7% OH-groups to decyl), it was shown that selectivity heptanal/1-hexene increased eight times.

Synthesis of poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-poly[3-(triisopropyloxysilyl) propyl methacrylate] and its use in the facile coating of hydrophilically patterned superhydrophobic fabrics

We report the synthesis and applications of a novel poly(dimethylsiloxane-block-poly[3-(triisopropyloxysilyl)propyl methacrylate]) (PDMS-b-PIPSMA) diblock copolymer.

Amphiphilic dual brush block copolymers as "giant surfactants" and their aqueous self-assembly

Amphiphilic dual brush diblock as well as symmetrical triblock polymers were synthesized by the overlay of the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and the nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) techniques. While poly(ethylene glycol) brushes served as hydrophilic block, the hydrophobic block was made of polystyrene brushes. The resulting "giant surfactants" correspond structurally to the established amphiphilic diblock and triblock copolymer known as macrosurfactants. The aggregation behavior of the novel "giant surfactants" in aqueous solution was studied by dynamic light scattering, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) over a large range in reciprocal space. Further, the self-assembled aggregates were investigated by scanning force microscopy (SFM) after deposition on differently functionalized ultraflat solid substrates. Despite the high fraction of hydrophobic segments, the polymers form stable mesoscopic, spherical aggregates with hydrodynamic diameters in the range of 150-350 nm. Though prepared from well-defined individual polymers, the aggregates show several similarities to hard core latexes. They are stable enough to be deposited without much changes onto surfaces, where they cluster and show spontaneous sorting according to their size within the clusters, with the larger aggregates being in the center.

High-performance liquid chromatography with nuclear magnetic resonance detection applied to organosilicon polymers

LC-NMR utilizing (1)H and (29)Si NMR spectroscopy is ideally suited for the analysis of silicones. It is shown that reversed phase gradient LC-NMR surpasses standard gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) in the analysis of model hydride terminated polydimethylsiloxane. (1)H and (29)Si NMR in the stopped-flow arrangement leads to full identification of the components. Concentration gradient introduces a dependence of the (29)Si shifts on solvent composition, this dependence can be substantially reduced by a proposed method of referencing. It is shown that the ADEQUATE version of powerful but insensitive 2D INADEQUATE experiment can be used for complete line assignment.
