Abstract
Designing (hetero)cycloarenes through the modifications of the π-topology and molecular packing of organic semiconductors has recently garnered considerable attention. However, their applications as an organic active layer in field-effect transistors are very limited, and the obtained hole carrier mobilities are less than 1 cm2 V-1 s-1 . In this work, a novel alkyl-substituted coplanar N-heterocycloarene (FM-C4) containing four carbazole units is successfully synthesized in crystalline form. As compared to the corresponding single-bond-linked carbazole-based macrocycle M-C4, it is found that the periphery fusion strategy greatly changes the electronic structures, energy levels, photophysical properties, host-guest interactions with fullerenes, and molecular crystal stacking motifs. In particular, the fully fused N-heterocycloarene FM-C4 exhibits a herringbone packing structure with an unusual long-range π-π overlap distance as low as 3.19 Å, whereas the single crystal of M-C4 demonstrates no π-π interactions. As a consequence, FM-C4 in single-crystal transistors displays the highest hole mobility of 2.06 cm2 V-1 s-1 , significantly outperforming M-C4 and all the reported (hetero)cycloarenes and suggesting the high potential of (hetero)cycloarenes for organic electronic applications.

Abstract
o-Carborane-based donor-acceptor dyads comprising an o-carboranyl phenyl unit combined with N-carbazole (1) or 4-phenyl-N-carbazole (2) were prepared, and their dyad characters were confirmed by steady-state photochemistry and photodynamic experiments as well as electrochemical studies. The absorption and electrochemical properties of the dyads were essentially the sum of those of the carbazole and o-carboranyl phenyl units; this indicates negligible interaction between the carbazole and o-carborane units in the ground state. However, the emission spectra of 1 and 2 indicated that carbazole fluorescence was effectively quenched and a new charge-transfer (CT) emission was observed in solvents, varying from hexane to acetonitrile, which exhibited large Stoke shifts. The CT emission properties of o-carborane-based dyads were further analyzed by using Lippert-Mataga plots to show that unit charge separation occurred to form a charge-separated species in the excited state, namely, 1⋅2. This excited-state species was confirmed by nanosecond transient absorption spectra and spectroelectrochemical measurements; the photoexcitation of carbazole generated the CT state in which a radical cation and anion were formed at the carbazole and o-carborane units, respectively, within a few nanoseconds. DFT calculations corroborated the presence of this CT species and showed localized populations of the highest singly occupied molecular orbital on 2 in the reduced anionic state. As a result, molecular assemblies formed by linking the carbazole group with the o-carborane cage through a phenylene or multi-phenylene spacer revealed that the photoinduced electron-transfer process occurred intramolecularly.

Abstract
A series of luminescent platinum(II) complexes of tridentate 1,3-bis(N-alkylbenzimidazol-2'-yl)benzene (bzimb) ligands has been synthesized and characterized. One of these platinum(II) complexes has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their electrochemical, electronic absorption, and luminescence properties have been investigated. Computational studies have been performed on this class of complexes to elucidate the origin of their photophysical properties. Some of these complexes have been utilized in the fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by using either vapor deposition or spin-coating techniques. Chloroplatinum(II)-bzimb complexes that are functionalized at the 5-position of the aryl ring, [Pt(R-bzimb)Cl], not only show tunable emission color but also exhibit high current and external quantum efficiencies in OLEDs. Concentration-dependent dual-emissive behavior was observed in multilayer OLEDs upon the incorporation of pyrenyl ligand into the Pt(bzimb) system. Devices doped with low concentrations of the complexes gave rise to white-light emission, thereby representing a unique class of small-molecule, platinum(II)-based white OLEDs.

Abstract
A novel intramolecular donor-acceptor compound has been synthesized and characterized. This compound was a symmetrical A-pi-D-pi-A type molecule containing two benzimidazole rings as two electron acceptors (A) and an N-ethylcarbazole group as electron donors (D). The absorption and emission spectra of the compound were determined by experimental methods in solution and were computed by using the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in gas phase and in chloroform solution. The calculated absorption and emission wavelengths were in good agreement with the experimental ones. The fluorescence quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes of the compound in several solvents have been studied by means of steady state and time resolved fluorescence. The results showed the compound had high quantum yield. The cross-section of two-photon absorption (TPA) of the compound was measured by using femtosecond laser in dichloromethane solution. The result indicated the cross-section maximum of two-photon absorption was 430 GM at 600 nm. These results made the compound of great interest as a new fluorescent probe and photoluminescence material.

Abstract
Ultrathin films of a cross-linked and chemically distinct conjugated poly(p-phenylene) network via electropolymerization are described. The amphiphilic network precursor was synthesized by incorporating the alkoxy carbazole group (-O(CH2)5Cb) to a poly(p-phenylene) (C6PPPOH) backbone. In order to investigate the combined thin film electrochemical and photophysical properties of poly(p-phenylene)s and polycarbazole conjugated polymers, C6PPPC5Cb was deposited on substrates using the Langmuir Blodgett Kuhn (LBK) method. The monolayer isotherm of the polymer, C6PPPC5Cb, showed a liquid expanded region slightly different from the parent polymer C6PPPOH. Multilayers (up to 30 layers) were transferred to different substrates such as quartz, gold coated LaSFN9 and ITO substrates for analysis. For conversion to a conjugated polymer network (CPN) film, the electroactive carbazole group was electropolymerized using cyclic voltammetry (CV) resulting in polycarbazole linking units. The differences in the film properties and corresponding changes in the electrochemical behavior indicate the importance of film thickness and electron/ion transport process in cross linked network films. From the electrochemical studies, the scan rate was found to have a considerable effect on electropolymerization with higher oxidation and reduction peak values found for the rigid network polymer compared to the uncrosslinked polymers.
